Apple Safari web browser market share passes 4% milestone, up 45% year-over-year

“According to data collected by Market Share, Apple Computer’s Safari Web browser continues to gain market share as it’s [sic] use continues to rise,” Switch To A Mac (STAM) reports.

STAM reports, “In November 2005, Safari’s market share as measured by Market Share (Net Applications) was 2.78 percent. In November 2006, Safari’s market share comes in at 4.03 percent… The rise from 2.78 to 4.03 represents a year-over-year growth of 45 percent (rounded to the nearest whole percent, actual rise is 44.96 percent) for the month of November.”

“The continued Safari usage increase can be used as a metric to track the increase in the number of Mac users. Note that Safari Mac OS X’s default Internet browser. It’s a well know fact that numerous OS X users rely on other browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Camino. As a result, the Safari data is likely to under represent the actual growth of Mac users,” STAM reports.

“Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser has fallen 6.32 percent year-over-year falling from 86.10 percent in November 2005 to 80.65 percent in November 2006,” STAM reports. “Mozilla’s Firefox browser is up 52.7 percent year-over-year rising from 8.84 percent to 13.5 percent over the same period.”

  1. Rocket Scientist,

This is America and we have the right to butcher the English Language in any manner and way we want! Look at what we did with ‘Z’. Zee it is easy!

We have done the same to TV formats, our own Imperial measurements and weights and a plethora of other stuff that most of us have no idea the rest of the world doesn’t use.

Just leave us alone. We live in our own world.

  2. Another anti-American rant; another busted skull. Some days, it is like shooting fish in a barrel.

    1) The English system of weights and measurements was inherited by America, first off. We didn’t develop it.

    2) The English system works, and has worked for a good, long time. If the system did not adequately meet the needs of people, it would have been discontinued. For instance, there’s a reason why we don’t use the French Revolution-era method to tell time.

    3) What “the rest of the world does” is unimportant, as far as any cultural/national group is concerned, as long as their needs are being met by the given system. And traditionally, the U.S. hasn’t been the only country to use the system, so the whole “rest of the world” argument is based on a lie.

    4) Fourth, do you live your life based on conforming to what everyone around you does? Seriously, are you even suggesting this on a Mac site?

    5) The metric system is divorced from the real world and has no connection to history or experiental reality. A meter has no real meaning in terms of length; a foot does; a “hand” does; an inch does.

    6) If you are an American, you are an embarrasment. Self-hatred doesn’t look good on anyone, especially on internet wacademics who hijack threads to urinate out their tired, bogus arguments.

  3. Um, Busting … I think that entry was meant as a pro-American statement.

It’s (not “its”) got that sense of “rugged individualism” “damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” attitude that has made Our Country great. Plus, it includes the oh-so-“now” fashion sense of being Isolationist.

Besides, if you really wanted to bust his skull you would have taken him to task for saying we use the “Imperial” measurement system (cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_the_Imperial_and_US_customary_systems ).

MW: Do the US, the Commonwealth, and the rest of the world all have different definitions of the size of one piece?

  4. “2) The English system works, and has worked for a good, long time. If the system did not adequately meet the needs of people, it would have been discontinued.
    ….
    5) The metric system is divorced from the real world and has no connection to history or experiental reality. A meter has no real meaning in terms of length; a foot does; a “hand” does; an inch does. “

    2) & 5) – unless you are a scientist, in which case the metric system is used, uh, a fucking lot.

    5) Regarding experiential derivation of a meter, in fact, was originally defined as some fraction of the polar circumference of the earth. That ultimate standard of that has, of course, changed over the years. Although the polar circumference of the earth can change over time, if only because our ability to measure it improves (thus, the change in stadard), it is a hell of a lot more meaningful than the length of, literally, someone’s foot, which is obviously much more variable. Is a “foot” of a person more easily conceptualized? Yes. Is it wildly more variable and, therefore, useless? Yes. Other metric units of measure were similarly defined as something with far less variability than human anatomy.

This has nothing to do with American vs any other nationality.

  5. Hey BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots,

Are you for real or are you trying to be witty?

Other than #1, your “points” are so wrong as to be silly. And #1 is irrelevant.

Thanks for the humour (at least I hope you were joking!)

By the way – a query for all:
Q: How many countries in the world don’t use the metric system?
A: 2. The USA is one. A very small, 3rd world country in central Africa is the other. Talk about arrogance!

  6. I have 5 browsers on my system.

Safari, Camino, Firefox, Opera and Flock (I use them in that order).

The reasoning is that one, they are like 30 to 50 MB each…so that take up no space.

Two, some Microsoft A-holes like to specifically block out Safari on their websites so you just have to have a non-Safari.

Lastly…everything runs better on a Mac.

And just as a safety thing, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t use different browsers. Each browser uses cookies and handles websites in their own way. Now true Camino, Firefox and Flock all use the same layout engine but used as a whole with Opera and Safari would completely zonk a hacker.

BTW, if you don’t have a second browser on your system…I highly recommend Camino. What a beautiful browser. And so wicked fast.

  7. ron

Safari use to crash for me all the time too…Apple Care had me reset the browser and it totally fix whatever was causing it to crash.

It kind of sucks to go back and plug in all of my site logins BUT…it hasn’t crashed in almost a year.

So if you’re not using it…might as well try it:)

  8. Hey Skulls, don’t fret Bro! Not being anti-American, just concerned with our insular attitudes.

The truth hurts. Just take a few deep breaths and ask yourself what all these differences will mean when we are the only nation left on earth not using the metric system and we are no longer the economic dynamo that we once were.

I use the metric system as a single example, there are others! Metric is simple and easy but it is still a big paradigm shift and will take Americans a long time to come to grips with. Better we start now…………

  9. Let’s see. The US Military uses the metric system. And all imports of goods to the US (largely Chinese lately) classified andc collected to know what our trade deficit is is all collected using the metric units of measure. For example Fabric imported is measured in Meters not yards, Wire, steel food products i.e any government statistic regarding goods being imported is all in metrics.

Why? As ROFL says. We and one or two other countries are the only ones left in the world that don’t use the metric system.

Even the Brits are for the most part on board with metrics, as well as Chevrolet, Ford and Chrysler. US auto manufactures rate their engines in liters as opposed to cubic inches, and most of the screws the use in the car are metric as well. I can only hope that they bring over some of those Opel (GM owned), Euro Ford and Diamler clean Diesels that get about 5 liters per 100 kms (oh, I mean, 62 Miles per 1.32 gallons) that are all over Europe and plop them into some American made cars.

The metric system is simply simple 10: 1 or 100: 1 or 1000: 1 or whatever. Much simpler than quarts to pints to 2/5ths etc. etc… lets get with the program.

You can’t play in a world game by your own rules. Ya gotta agree on the basics. And unit of measure is kinda of a basic common denomintor. Hence the military and the Government use it. Thinking like ‘Busting the Skull of Idiots’ is one of the reasons why we have the largest trade deficit in the WORLD for cryin’ out loud.

  10. The reason we have a trade deficit is because of the Federal Reserve system which has nothing to do with our Federal government and everything with outside banking interests. “Isn’t” it interesting that we allow foreign banking monopolies to create the notes we call money to have “its” way in America. If you want a good expose on this tradgedy of inflation and deficit see the the movie “Freedom To Facism”. It will give you an excellent insight into the manipulation of the Rothchilds, Bildenburgers, and other old world money owners of the federal reserve. You even get a history lesson on how our tax farce was created than declared unconstitutional by our Supreme court. This film by Aaron Russo should be required viewing for every American. As far as what the rest of the world thinks. One should always live bu the principle that there is no right way to do that which is wrong. More later

  11. What is being described is not “market share” but is rather “installed base.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Installed_base

Why are so many of you arguing about grammar, etc? The whole premise of the article is about Apple’s market share, but the data presented is not about market share. “Market share” is only about sales. You do remember that Apple doesn’t currently sell any Macs that aren’t Intel-based. You cannot possibly have data about market share of non-Intel Macs unless you’re talking about previously-owned Macs that were resold–an atypical topic to write an article about. Additionally, how can you provide any data about current sales by analyzing web traffic?

  12. Busting…,
As I tell my Windows-using-friends, sometimes you have to let go of legacy stuff to move on to a better system. The metric is better for our base 10 number system. Notice this argument has nothing to do with “doing what everyone else is”. Start self-busting.
