Apple says iPhone sold out at online stores in U.S. and U.K.
Monday, May 12, 2008 - 03:44 PM EDT

"Apple Inc.'s iPhone is sold out at its online stores in the U.S. and U.K., a sign that a new model with faster Internet access may be introduced soon. The shares rose as much as 3 percent," Connie Guglielmo reports for Bloomberg.

"'We're currently out of stock,' Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said today in an interview. Both the 8-gigabyte and 16- gigabyte models are unavailable. She declined to say when Apple will replenish inventory or comment on supply at retail stores," Guglielmo reports.

"The shortage suggests Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs is readying a new model, which may be unveiled during his speech at Apple's developer conference on June 9, Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster said today in a report. Apple's wireless partner in the U.K. sold out on May 8 after cutting prices, and the Web-surfing handset is in short supply at the company's retail outlets in the U.S., he said," Guglielmo reports.

"'The channels are running dry,' said Munster, who is based in Minneapolis and recommends buying Apple shares. 'The limited availability is one of several indications that the release of a new model is imminent,'" Guglielmo reports.

i just can't believe that apple is going to wait until june before releasing a new phone. if that happens then someone terrifically miscalculated. they are giving up a month's worth of sales.

May 12, 08 - 04:00 pm Comment from: Turbine

They just sold out early. They will probably do a quick limited run of existing models to sell during this month.

May 12, 08 - 04:01 pm Comment from: Macintosh

June 9th. They don't want pissed off people lining up at the Apple store that bought the 1st generation a few days before the new one.

May 12, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: @ Turbine

no way Apple miscalculated that.

May 12, 08 - 04:02 pm Comment from: Gavron

waiting,

yeah, it doesn't make sense.

Tomorrow's Tuesday!

May 12, 08 - 04:03 pm Comment from: montex

Even though the signs point to an early introduction for the next iPhone, Jobs just doesn't drop something this big without a chance to finesse the media into a frenzy of adulation. I'm betting on the WWDC as the release date. Setting the new iPhone free any sooner would rob Steve of the drama and free PR he'd get from wowing the crowd at the WWDC.

May 12, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: ska752

tommorrow is tuesday...

May 12, 08 - 04:05 pm Comment from: be informed

If I were in the market for a $500 tech device I would do a little research first before I plopped down my cash on something that could be replaced with a newer model...shortly after I purchased it.

May 12, 08 - 04:06 pm Comment from: The Muffin Man

montex,

but if the iPhone just get's a GB and 3G update and a new device is coming in June, then it all fits.

May 12, 08 - 04:07 pm Comment from: be informed

my previous comment was directed to Macintosh's comment about Apple not wanting to piss off customers.

May 12, 08 - 04:10 pm Comment from: Turbine

Hmm..

I don't know.

They don't ever seem to "run out" of any other products before updating....

Sure seems like a simple miscalculation of demand to me.

May 12, 08 - 04:10 pm Comment from: Yes

Sooner

May 12, 08 - 04:18 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

I don't believe Apple will release a 3G iPhone without Steve Jobs showing off his new toy, and audience members looking on star gazed, and no event has currently been planned by Apple, so this has me stumped.

Until I hear otherwise, I'll go with the 3G iPhone being released in June.

May 12, 08 - 04:20 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

You MAC sheep have it all wrong. Again.

The reason there aren't any I-Phones is because the product has been scrapped by Apple. In a world where tactile keyboards, points, enterprise connectivity and squirting rule the day Cupertino finally saw the writing on the wall and decided to concentrate on their core business—one button mice.

People, the ZunePhone is coming.

Your potential. Our passion.™

There's no new iPhone coming. Apple sold their 10 million, now they're done. wink

May 12, 08 - 04:28 pm Comment from: Turbine

I think they are just trying to get a little boost in the search engines and join in on the "craze" of the whole thing for some free, easy, web traffic.

May 12, 08 - 04:29 pm Comment from: MacSoftwareList.com

It will be tomorrow. That's my guess.

May 12, 08 - 04:32 pm Comment from: Heinrich von Schnaps

If they could ship all the iPhones still available in Germany, they could supply the U.S. and G.B. for 3 more months....

May 12, 08 - 04:34 pm Comment from: Demon

I think Apple's iPhone sells forecasts expected a slowing in sells earlier as the WWDC approached and the rumors started getting thick, but demand continued and outpaced the expected remaining supply which has resulted in no iPhones as opposed to just short supplies.

Apple is not likely in announce or release a major revision of the iPhone prior to WWDC. Apple with the iPhone 2 being a major product announcement. It's not just a minor speed bump like they do with the Mac Pro, iMac or Mac Mini. I'm predicting that Apple will be very quit until WWDC and the Wild ass rumors will continue until then.

According to my source at AT&T;. If you want a current gen iPhone your best bet is the AT&T;retail stores, before close Sunday (May 18) as any remaining AT&T;stores with iPhone inventories will/have been instructed to return all unsold iPhone stock to the AT&T;distribution center. AT&T;will then allocate the returned new stock for online order fulfillment's only. Current inventory level at AT&T;retail is less then 350 total units with most retail locations only have a stock depth of 3 or less. Stores will/have been told not to expect any fresh iPhone shipments until June 9th.

May 12, 08 - 04:35 pm Comment from: john

Apple is just building up the hype as usual... it is getting rather predictable. And when it does come out it will be more expensive than folks hoped. same old Apple strategy as the past 10 years.

May 12, 08 - 04:41 pm Comment from: Turbine

@john:

Yep. I love Apple stuff, but with all the hype, every new product ends up being less exciting than hoped.

iPhone 2 will be over-priced and under-featured compared to hopes/desires/expectations.

I'd love to be wrong, but it does seem to be the trend thanks to way too much pre-release speculation and banter all the time.

May 12, 08 - 04:44 pm Comment from: Jeremy

It's not beyond the pale that Apple would allow for a small outage of stock just before the introduction of the new model. This would allow them to have line-ups again and people banging on the door just to be allowed to buy one. Looks good in the press, you know?

I can hear it now ... "It was a year ago this week when thousands lined up for the original iPhone, well they are at it again as Apple released the 2.0 version of it's record selling product ..." etc. etc.

A month is quite a lot of sales to lose though so who knows.

May 12, 08 - 04:47 pm Comment from: Turbine

If this was a planned stock shortage, it's probably all about having 30 days in between not selling and the new model so they can avoid that PR mess they had last year with the price cut and all.

May 12, 08 - 04:49 pm Comment from: kalel666

I say Steve intro's it in person at the opening of the new Boylston mega store on the 15th.

May 12, 08 - 04:51 pm Comment from: Yebot

Its tough to believe that Apple would pause iPhone sales for a full month in order to drop iPhone 2.0 on WWDC/June 9th. Shareholders would revolt.

Its equally tough to believe that Apple would debut a faster, bigger better phone as early as tomorrow for the same price (or less) as iPhone 1.0/1.5. Blogosphere-Digg-Fanboy-early adopters would revolt.

May 12, 08 - 05:10 pm Comment from: ../.

Sooner, I bet. That way, Apple can focus on the SDK during the developer conference rather than focusing on the hardware.

May 12, 08 - 05:10 pm Comment from: Sixvodkas

@ Turbine

Hype?

If your definition of the word "hype" = not one word from the manufacturer, EVAH, until the day Apple announces whatever the product in question happens to be... then I humbly suggest you familiarize yourself with the definition of the word "hype".

If anything at all, Apple epitomizes the "anti-Hype".

Nice try, though.

NOT.

May 12, 08 - 05:15 pm Comment from: mr_matalino

CDMA!?!?

May 12, 08 - 05:21 pm Comment from: Turbine

@Sixvodkas:

If you read the post a little more closely, I was inferring that the "hype" is from blogs and analysts and everyone OTHER than Apple.

I did not indicate I was referring to promotion from Apple.

I agree, they don't do any hyping themselves.

May 12, 08 - 05:23 pm Comment from: Turbine

@Sixvodkas:

Hype: Extravagant of Intensive Publicity

No definition of that word indicates that the SOURCE of the publicity must be the manufacturer.

May 12, 08 - 05:37 pm Comment from: Wha

This is honestly killing me LOL! I was about to purchase an iPod classic last Friday until I seen the iPhone go out of stock. Now I'm hoping to see a 32 gig model iPhone that would be capable of storing enough of my music to satisfy my needs. I truly pray to hear of the iPhone 2.0 debut tomorrow so I can make my final purchasing decision. This sucks, burnin' wallet & all. Is it a safe bet that we'll see a 32 gig iPhone?

Damn it!

May 12, 08 - 06:02 pm Comment from: January 24, 1984

Wonder how we "seamlessly" upgrade with same number. I'll be dumping my 8 GB iPhone the moment I can.

May 12, 08 - 06:25 pm Comment from: hugh

this is a hard one. Unusual for apple to run short of stock and a months worth of sales and the resulting momentum is a lot to sacrifice.

however, such a shortage will build hype and tempo for the new model

May 12, 08 - 06:47 pm Comment from: Queezzie

To all you shortage conspiracists:
LOL.
It is not a shortage - they just ran out of product too soon....misjudged demand.
If it was a great "build hype" marketing scheme then they should do it with every product and have the shortage 1, 2 or 3 months before the next new product introduction.

May 12, 08 - 06:56 pm Comment from: Richie_mofo

Enough about the new iPhone! I'm as excited about it as anyone, but it won't arrive any sooner if we all speculate!

What I'm interested in is 10.5.3 as my MB isn't loving 10.5.2! :-(

May 12, 08 - 07:19 pm Comment from: Turbine

@January:

I too was wondering that. I have this feeling that we will get somehow screwed by AT&T;...

It's based upon nothing other than my previous dealings with them...

grin

May 12, 08 - 10:57 pm Comment from: iLuvMyMacs

<< It will be tomorrow. That's my guess. >>

It's a good guess. Apple is very good at JustInTime inventory control so my money is also on May13 or... May16.

What's a Blackberry?

May 13, 08 - 01:18 am Comment from: Can't people wait?

I don't see why this shortage is a huge issue. If people are saving up $500ish to drop on a phone is it that crazy to think that they won't just wait another 3-4 weeks until the new one is out? Or would they much rather buy the old one so close to a new product release....

May 13, 08 - 03:43 am Comment from: Flazzoom

The 16GB iPhone is still available from the UK O2 online store.

May 13, 08 - 05:05 am Comment from: gzero

@montex,

A 3G iPhone is not as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be, due to the fact that Steve Jobs said back in January of 2007 that a 3G iPhone was coming. It's actually one of Apple's famous Worst Kept Secrets. I think the big questions are:

1. What will the 3G iPhone look like?
2. Will Apple continue to sell a non-3G iPhone? If so,
3. What will it look like? Smaller? Cheaper?

I'm also starting to believe that Apple will announce something else at WWDC, perhaps a bigger (read: screen size) iPod Touch or some sort of multitouch tablet-like device.

May 13, 08 - 07:16 am Comment from: Wha

All I know is that I'll be feeling somewhat jaded until the next iteration comes available. I would love to know in advance if this new iPhone will come in a 32 gig capacity. If it doesn't I'll be more than pleased to purchase the iPod classic. My music needs override all other deciding factors at this moment. If they stick to 16 gigs it will be useless product to me.

May 13, 08 - 09:01 am Comment from: @Zune Tang®

The Zune is a commercial disaster as expected.

Have a good read:

@ Queezzie

"If it was a great "build hype" marketing scheme then they should do it with every product and have the shortage 1, 2 or 3 months before the next new product introduction."

No they shouldn't. If they followed your advice, then soon nobody would be excited cos they'll just think "it's nothing, Apple's just doing this to hype <insert product name here>". Simply put, it'll lose it's effectiveness soon enough.
