Apple sees spot shortages of selected iPhone 3GS at Apple Retail Stores across U.S.
Monday, June 29, 2009 - 08:51 AM EST

Apple Online Store "The iPhone availability widget is back — new and improved — and it’s showing spot shortages of selected iPhones at Apple stores across the United States," Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune. "The availability tool, which appears on Apple’s website in times of scarcity, was last seen in the summer of 2008, when demand for the iPhone 3G was heavy and supplies short."

"When it reappeared on Friday, only 29 of Apple’s 257 stores were displaying shortages of any iPhones... By Sunday morning, however, there were red “sold out” lights for selected 3GS models in all but six states. Kentucky’s only store, in Louisville, was completely out of stock," Elmer-DeWitt reports.

I tried the widget. It keeps giving me a message that Jon Rubinstein sold out. Weird.

I was in Kentucky's only store, btw it was busy, I bought a black 16GB - that was all they had left. I might have got the last one. I was there at closing time.

Similarly, Virgin Mobile in Australia are out of stock: https://www.virginmobile.com.au/shop/iPhone.aspx
which is interesting because every mobile network in Oz sells the iPhone - Virgin, Vodafone, Telstra, Optus and Three - is it because they are the best value network regardless of the phone? I reckon that although people want it, they want the best plan more.... Or maybe Virgin are the poor relation when it comes to stock allocation....
