Apple: September 9th ‘Let’s Rock’ special event to be a ‘big deal’
Monday, September 08, 2008 - 11:50 AM EST

"As usual, what will actually happen during [Apple's] special event remains (officially) unknown. Unofficially, however, there's a lot that we 'know,' or at least expect. The surest bets revolve around renewed iPod nano designs, iPod touch designs, and price drops," Jacqui Cheng reports for Ars Technica.

A new iPod nano featuring widescreen displays with "rounded, curved glass" in new colors and iPod touch updates featuring cosmetic changes to make the units "more iPhone 3G-like" are among the rumors Cheng mentions.

In addition, "it's widely expected that iTunes 8 will be making its debut on Tuesday, complete with a smattering of new features like a Pandora-like Genius feature, Genius Sidebar, Grid view, and more.... We received word over the weekend that it had finally been approved for release and that iPhone 2.1 firmware was possibly slated to come along with it. And, on top of it all, what we've heard about iPhone 2.1 may not be all that's in the update: supposedly there are features that were removed before the firmware was seeded to developers," Cheng reports.

Apple has told "various members of the media that the event will be a 'big deal,' Apple sure does seem to want everyone to be there, and not just to confirm the existence of everything we've already heard about," Cheng reports.

I hope iPhone OS X 2.1 has the "no crashes forcing a restore" code added back into it, it seems to have been removed from 2.0 - 2.0.2.

It was working fine in 1.1.4, I wonder why they removed it?

Sep 08, 08 - 10:55 am Comment from: twilightmoon

We'll likely know soon, Jamie. Sept 9 is only 1 more day away.

Sep 08, 08 - 10:56 am Comment from: Wealthy Industrialite

I'm hoping for Apple to make App installs go at least as smoothly as they did on my unlocked 1.1.4 iPhone.

I know this event is not about iMac, but I want my new 4 cores iMac with PA Semi quicktime co processor...

Whether or not it's a big deal depends on whether or not you have a life and whether or not you have a rational perspective on what's going on in the technology industry.

Now watching Chrome running on a an Android based phone, that was a big deal. Flash worked, multiple video codecs, and it was FAST.

Sep 08, 08 - 11:13 am Comment from: PC Apologist

If there's iPhone news, it'll likely include the launch of the push/alert app service for things like AIM to notify of incoming messages while the app is not maintaining a persistent TCP/IP socket (draining battery)

iTunes UNLIMITED YES OR NOT????????????

Sep 08, 08 - 11:28 am Comment from: Gabriel

@StarkReality,

And how many Android phones are currently available for purchase again? How many side-by-side benchmarks have been run between an iPhone and an Android phone?

…sorry, just some "stark reality" there for ya. wink

Jobs will announce his retirement. Stock plunges to 100.

Sep 08, 08 - 11:34 am Comment from: currentinterest

Speculation: The new $100 iPhone Nano will be introduced for the holiday season. Available end of September or early October. It will have MMS (which will be in 2.1), contacts, calendar, calculator, camera, and iPod features. It will run games from the App store, and may have a slide out key board as well as touch features. The kids will eat it up.

I think the big sleeper is GPS for the iPod Touch with downloadable base maps so you don't need to be online.

Sep 08, 08 - 11:52 am Comment from: Predrag

Hopefully, this 'big deal' is going to be big enough to pull Apple's stock out of the toilet. Today's drop seems to be quite significant (intra-day so far of about 8%), which seems quite steep, considering the rest of the market continues to gyrate on the positive side of the Friday close.

As long as Jobs is there to present this thing, it should be OK.

Sep 08, 08 - 11:54 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

The only rumor with traction I heard was Jobs was going to introduce Ted Knight in their commercials to battle Microsoft's brilliant move to hire Jerry Seinfeld. I think what we'll be witnessing is a super-battle of sitcom giants fighting it out for their respective employers. Consumers always benefit when companies are forced to compete.

There's going to be a Sarah Palin signature iPod. When you play it, it makes liberals tremble.

Sep 08, 08 - 12:21 pm Comment from: Not Oops

The Sarah Palin model is codenamed Zune.

"There's going to be a Sarah Palin signature iPod."

Does that mean she's going to ban audiobooks too?

And isn't Palin just Cheney in drag but with better aim?

Oh, and Chrome and Android are based upon what? WebKit.

Sep 08, 08 - 12:27 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

I bet some of these rumors surfaced to weed out the leakers. Heads are rolling!

Like the subscription service which has failed everywhere it's been tried.

It'll be nice for the nano to get back to the elongated form factor. As much as I tried, I don't like the square-ish nano.

touch screen nano

Sep 08, 08 - 12:54 pm Comment from: Nick Fury

"touch screen nano"

Only if you legally or naturally have the fingers of a child. Or a prehensile nubbin.

Sep 08, 08 - 01:01 pm Comment from: Nick Fury

BTW, if you do have a prehensile nubbin, tell Fox.
You're almost guaranteed your own reality TV series.

Sep 08, 08 - 01:17 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

Don't limit the trembling to liberals. Anyone who can put together a thought is trembling.

Perhaps the iPod Touch will no longer come pre-installed with version 1 of the software forcing newly purchased Touch owners to pay extra just to get the version 2 system software that was released over a month ago!

Yes, the demos in the Apple store all have version 2.02. When you get home, you find that your brand new box doesn't come with the system demoed in the store forcing you to pay for an "upgrade" for your brand new touch!

I really felt screwed!!!

Sep 08, 08 - 02:08 pm Comment from: Martin

new iPods are not a "big deal", i guess the iTunes Music Store Unlimited is.

@Lakitu - BANG ON

GPS with downloadable maps on both iPhone and the iPod Touch. As well, it will determine which direction you are facing and different modes for walking/running, biking and driving.

Cut and Paste on iPhone/iPod Touch

iPhone Nano

iPod Nano v4

iTunes 8 (including enhanced AppleTV functionality)

And this is AMERICA folks. I absolutely dread and HATE to say it but unfortunately America will not vote for a minority government (yet). While people on here may want it, what people say and who they vote for are entirely different. There is absolutely NO WAY Kerry should have lost a double-digit lead to Bush of all people and he lost by a landslide.

McCain is more liked than Bush. I just don't think there is anyway Obama will get the votes. America will vote on Race (sad!) and experience. I am in no way endorsing McCain here. Just stating what I think will happen.

Sep 08, 08 - 02:44 pm Comment from: Jose Can you See

Ooops

I meant "minority president" not "minority government'

That is absolutely not true. Assuming you did not buy it "off the back of the truck":-), all iPods purchased after the release of version 2.0 are automatically upgraded to the current version the first time you plug it into your computer. Case in point: My wife purchased a new iMac about 3 weeks ago. Since we got the education discount, we also got a free iPod Touch which I bumped to 16GB from 8GB since my wife already had one. As soon as we returned home and I synced it for the first time, it said "update available". I clicked the update button and it ran without charge. If they tried to charge you, you should have either taken it back to your apple store to ask them about it or called customer support.

You won't get GPS on the Touch. First, GPS on the iPhone is A-GPS using cell towers to help speed up the lock-on time and cut the processing power needed - it's not, after all, a dedicated GPS unit. The Touch can't do A-GPS as it has no cellular antenna, so it'd be veeeery slow and would only work outdoors with a clear satellite hook-up. Second, where are the maps going to come from? The iPhone downloads new Google maps on the fly as and when you need them. The Touch can't do that unless it's in a wi-fi zone. So you'd basically have treacle-slow GPS that only worked when you were in wi-fi range, tethering you to wherever you were unless you're in the biggest wi-fi zone ever. Pre-downloaded maps isn't going to happen either as that'll fill the memory fast, and what happens if you need a map you haven't pre-downloaded? You're stuffed.

I would be amazed if the revised Touch had GPS - it just doesn't seem worth the cost/effort for the slating it'd get because it doesn't function that well.
