Apple shares drop nearly 3%, dip below $90 on Mac OS X Leopard delay
Thursday, April 12, 2007 - 05:15 PM EST

Apple Store"Apple's iPhone is coming -- but at a price," Priya Ganapati reports for TheStreet.com.

"Its much-anticipated music player/handheld device will ship in late June as planned, but the company's Leopard operating system, a rival to Microsoft's Vista operating system upgrade, will be delayed, according to Apple," Ganapati reports. "The Cupertino, Calif.,-based company has had to divert engineering resources to the iPhone and as a result will push the release of Leopard back by at least three months to October, it said in a statement."

Ganapati reports, "Shares of Apple were recently off $2.45, or 2.7%, to $89.74 in extended trading. During the past week, several sell-side analysts had expected a June release of Leopard to reaccelerate growth."

Well duh. Buy more.

Apr 12, 07 - 04:27 pm Comment from: hotinplaya

I think it was the right choice,

Tiger already beats Vista hands down,

The iPhone is important, will expose even more people to Apple (other Than a mp3)

I bet, they announce the "Tiop Secret" features in June, w/beta until release in October

Nothing but white noise. Buy the dip tomorrow or Monday and be happy again in September.

YEEEEEEEEE-HAWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apple is so . . . f-cking . . . BRAVE for doing this. Doing it the RIGHT way, that is.

Give me Leopard when it's NEAR-PERFECT, not when it's rushed out the door like crap from Microsoft or other software vendors.

The public doesn't even know and won't even care about Leopard vs. Tiger. All they know is that Apple makes Macs and Macs are better than PCs.

And man oh man oh man, I've been hoping and PRAYING that AAPL would drop below $90 again!!!!!!

It's my buying opportunity!!! The one I dreamed of!!! I'm buying back in, baby!!!

YEEEEEEEEE-HAWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apr 12, 07 - 04:33 pm Comment from: Oops

I remember that hype Apple had on their website around the beginning of this year. This big promise of all the great stuff they were going to do in 2007. They should have been more specific and said that it would all happen in the second half of the year, and that the first half was going to be NOTHING but waiting.

No Leopard, but it's WAY overdue.
No Logic Pro 8, but it's WAY overdue.
No iLife '07, but it's WAY overdue.
No iWork '07, but it's WAY overdue.
No true video iPod, but it's WAY overdue.

Their major product lines have all taken this hit for the sole purpose of one product: iPhone.

I was already tired of waiting for all this 6 months ago. And so far this year it's been really lame. But this is just ridiculous. There comes a time when anticipation turns into frustration, and then into apathy. Geez!

And aint it great that the folks over at MS are having a good belly laugh over all this.

Finally, another chance to get some more shares.

Apr 12, 07 - 04:39 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Just to play devil's advocate here...

But what can't you do now that you'll be able to do when Leopard comes out? Is you workflow going to suffer without Spaces?
CS2 not running on Intel Macs... THAT was something to make a stink about (ask me how I know). But it's not as if there is some huge missing functionality that we've all ground to a halt waiting for. Well, running Windows apps in OS X would be very cool (hint) but I have VMware for now.
I'm very disappointed, but it's not the end of the world, and I'd be MUCH more upset if iPhone was delayed. That's going to be far more important to the company and the platform than Leopard in the long run.

Apr 12, 07 - 04:52 pm Comment from: Spark

iPhone is a scapegoat. Even so, I don't mind waiting. Tiger still has plenty of life. Speaking of life, why is iLife WAY overdue. Sure it can be improved, but did Apple promise a new version at any time?

Apr 12, 07 - 05:05 pm Comment from: SydneyStephen

Software development is not like building a car. It doesnt just flow down the production line. But a four month delay is a lot. You have to ask why Apple were so confident a few weeks ago when they scotched the rumour that Leopard was being delayed to support Vista - if they were on time a few weeks ago, how are they 4 months behind now?

Maybe they have had to make quite a few changes to Leopard to accommodate things they wanted to do in iPhone?

Apr 12, 07 - 05:06 pm Comment from: doG

Come on MDN, are you asleep at the wheel?

Priya Ganapati suggested that Leopard is Apple's answer to rival Vista - but this is backwards! Vista was MS's answer to Panther and Tiger. MS is scrambling right now trying to figure out what to do to combat Leopard, and they've got a long way to go before anything Leopard-like comes out of Redmond (think years).

Apple is still ahead in the game, although today's announcement has set us back a bit. Not to worry though.

For you switchers and wannabe switchers lapping up what the pump-and-dump® shorts are shoveling, you can go back to sleep: Apple is not doooooom. No, you don't need to wait for Leopard to get a Mac. Tiger is already far ahead of that POS Vista. Don't believe me? Go over to your neighbor's house and beg, borrow or, well, beg or borrow their Mac. Spend some quality time on it. Then go spend some time on a peecee running Asta la vista.

BTW, yes, it does suck tremendously that we have to wait for the next great big cat. I hope The Steve fires that candy ass responsible for managing the resources on the iPhone/Leopard teams, today!

Rock on Steve!

I needed this chance to get the time to roll over all of my 401k plans and an ancient IRA into a self managed IRA that permits trading on the NASDAQ. The bears will go wild on this one, but I will eventually be better off for getting my last block of wealth into AAPL.

Apr 12, 07 - 07:00 pm Comment from: Yours Smugly

Damn you iPhone. Steve's obsession with it is going to great lengths. I hope this doesn't do too much damage to Leopard, iLife and Macs in general.

Apr 12, 07 - 07:04 pm Comment from: DogGone

Yup Apple spelled it out clearly. The beta will be fun to play around with plus they will probably have to start releasing dev builds more often after June. With any luck we'll all be able to get our hands on the GM a few weeks before October. Remember 4K78 anyone?

Apr 12, 07 - 07:13 pm Comment from: joe tak

Hate to admit it but Oops may be onto something. Truth is, there is very little new from Apple since last June.

I mean, I'm going to buy the large version of the Iphone like many readers of MacDailyNews, but right now, that phone/internet device/widescreen ipod is a non-shipping pre-announced product. We used to call those things Vaporware.

There were no new mac-s announced at MacWorld 2007, no new softwares, no new networking devices or services so perhaps a sales slowdown and product delays were to be expected.

I've been told that there is tremendous innovation and product coming down the pipeline, but right now, it's like the bulging buildup in a held pipeline of a bugs bunny cartoon, maybe it will burst forth in the next few weeks, I hope so. I want to be wowed at the local Apple store and with new announcements in MDN.

Apr 12, 07 - 07:40 pm Comment from: Digital Mercenary

Yes Oops and Joe Tak,

Apple should have pulled a Microsoft and shipped a buggy unfinsihed, untested OS out the door and then charged people to test it. Then years later when it was finally done, charged them again for the final version. Yeah I'll bet Microsoft is having a belly laugh. They were four years late, not four months. By the way Oops, since when do you set the schedules for all those products? I haven't seen you on any Apple org charts. If you want unfinished products then go buy Vista. If you want a product released when it should be, then sit back and relax and climb the hell down of your high horse.

Magic word: Truth - And that's the truth, twppppppph!

Apr 12, 07 - 07:57 pm Comment from: Bob

Abdullah?

Ever heard of the word "grammer"? Try it, it will definitely help you.

In my case, there was a typo... in your case, you flubbed English 101.

Apr 12, 07 - 08:48 pm Comment from: Zune Tang

This is the beginning of the end. Apple should just shut down and give the money back to the shareholders. Losers.

Apr 12, 07 - 09:07 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Find new kidneys yet?

Apr 12, 07 - 09:45 pm Comment from: Peter

Digital Mercenary, you're missing the point.

If people were pulled off Leopard to get the iPhone shipping by June, I have to ask why not leave those people on Leopard and ship it on time and slip the iPhone? Since the iPhone was announced back in January--taking up an entire MacWorld keynote--it probably could have been announced later or shipped later.

No, I don't want Apple to ship a buggy Leopard. But I do want them to do what it takes to ship an operating system which I use day in and day out and that my business depends on when they said they would. If that means an iPhone or an AppleTV has to slip, so be it.

There've been lots of raving around recently about how Apple is going to retake the enterprise. Well, considering all the other "business" reasons for not buying Apple, add the fact that their computer business now takes second place to their iPod business and they've just made it tougher for an enterprise customer to take them seriously. Especially when you consider that the delay until October is going to push it into the next fiscal year for many businesses (which is going to screw up any budgeting done for Leopard).

I gotta agree with Oops, above. Where's iLife '07? Where's iWork '07? Are their developers off writing Widgets for the iPhone?

As a long-time Mac user, I'm used to being treated as a second-class citizen by companies. But I don't expect that treatment from Apple.

Apr 12, 07 - 11:26 pm Comment from: Your Belt

WTF....... Get a Grip People! It's not going to kill you! Lets all go on a nice vacation to Africa and when we get back, Leopard will be here waiting for you. Unless your so spoiled you get yourself killed by a real Leopard.

Take a deep breath, Keep your F**king Mouth shut and before you know it Leopard will be here.

Apr 13, 07 - 07:31 am Comment from: SydneyStephen

@Peter

Firstly, Apple's priority is to their shareholders. Secondly, their priority is to ensure that the company is strong enough to keep their customers happy.

If you look at this unselfishly, you will agree that your business does not "need" Leopard. In fact you don't even really know what is in it. What you are using today is more than adequate for your needs is it not?

But Apple, and AT&T;, need iPhone. And there are a lot of excited would-be customers for the iPhone who will help make Apple stronger so that they can continue to deliver the reliable, functional, products we need.

Apple needs to broaden the picture beyond iPod, and they MUST HAVE iPhone to prevent leakage from iPod to music-capable phones.

And who knows what the contractual arrangements are - perhaps there are big penalties payable to AT&T;if Apple can't deliver iPhone on time...

Apple is growing very fast. And that is difficult to manage. Too many new employees, too many new markets, too many new stores - it becomes impossible to maintain the culture and quality...

So, wait for Leopard. I am sure Apple is right and it will be well worth it. And, in the meantime, enjoy the splash that your favourite technology company is going to make with iPhone - a brand new market for Apple, and a product we have ALL been waiting for...

Apr 13, 07 - 08:32 am Comment from: Connor MacBook

To all those dissing the iPhone: It will put OS X into more hands than the Mac alone ever can.

Apr 13, 07 - 09:02 am Comment from: @Connor MacBook

EXACTLY. All the iPhone haters still don't realize that OSX via the iPhone will reach more people in a year (or less) than the Mac has in the last 5 years.

Despite dropping "computer" from their name, there should be no doubt that Apple is as much a computer company now than they heve been in the past. I think we Mac users have to really start redefining how we view "computers".

Apr 13, 07 - 10:42 am Comment from: Steven - This Shows Us A Few Things

1. Apple (perhaps even Steve) understands Brook's Law... or do they? Did Apple make the cardinal mistake of throwing more resources at program development, which is has huge potential at slowing its completion?

My hope is Brooks law is in effect, and that only de-bugging, "clean-up" & QA was required. If actual OS development or application development has received more bodies for iPhone, count on it not making June either...

2. Apple runs resources thin, which is completely counter to Redmond, and absolutely the correct way to manage developement, provided Apple did not just mess up the kitchen with 50 chefs!

3. It shows us that Apple's first priority is consumer-focused. That is, Apple has truly shifted into a consumer-first company. This isn't bad, but it does show us where the priorities stand.

Apr 13, 07 - 11:13 am Comment from: TripleHead

I'm probably going to be slammed for this, but anyway...

Think about this for just a minute about the delay of Leopard.

A couple of weeks ago there was an link on MDN from a blog that stated that Apple was going to delay the Leopard release to add support for Vista and everyone slammed that idea.

BUT...

If part of Leopard will include Boot Camp that will allow running of Windows software on OS X without Windows itself, then there just might be something to this other than just the iPhone issue. Now that would be huge and worth the wait.

just my 2 cents...
