Feb 01, 07 - 04:31 pm Comment from: Dimplemonkey

And what makes this better than less expensive Pre-N and MIMO Routers? No, really?

Feb 01, 07 - 04:34 pm Comment from: Thomas

@ Dimplemonkey

Seamless integration. Have you ever compared the performance of a wireless Mac on a Linksys compared to a Apple router. It's a world apart.

first comment woo! and ew, a Vista ad right next to this box...gross...

A world apart better or worse?

Feb 01, 07 - 04:41 pm Comment from: Crabs

I swear, some things are just plain weird, it says other people posted 17 minutes ago. But there weren't any when I was writing that...weird...

Feb 01, 07 - 04:42 pm Comment from: unfettered

Mine is on order. I'm looking forward to the NAS support, as well as the ability to connect multiple USB devices via an attached hub. I'll connect my Belkin USB hub, my LaCie 500GB hard drive and a couple printers. Also, I can connect the three desktops (2 macs and a linux box) via Gigabit ethernet using the included ports (no additional switch required,) while the laptops will connect wirelessly - only one of which (a current-model MacBook Pro 15") will take advantage of the fast n feature.

Feb 01, 07 - 04:52 pm Comment from: Cynic821

UNFETTERED:

Your wireless networking speed will only be as fast as your SLOWEST computer.

So id keep those other kaka laptops and all other NON 802.11n wireless devices off of the Airport if you want to see 802.11n speeds with your Macbook Pro C2D

Feb 01, 07 - 04:52 pm Comment from: Bizarro Ballmer

crabs ,

that's cause it took you 14 minutes to write that line wink

Feb 01, 07 - 05:01 pm Comment from: Filipino Bumper Hello

"Crabs"? Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Hey, they've got powders and medicines for that stuff now, genius.

Cynic821

"wireless networking speed will only be as fast as your SLOWEST"

Better check that out, a bit misleading. IIRC networking an "g" computer will slow the network down, but not as slow as "g".

I believe one reason is the presence of more antennas in an "n" network. Let's "g" really be the theoretical "g" and not just a real-world "g".

Dimplemonkey

Just to be clear, the new Airport Extreme Base Station let's you hook up a USB hard drive for use as a mountable, managed, network drive. A bit more expensive than Pre-N and MIMO Routers and orders of magnitude cheaper than MicroSoft's new home server.

Feb 01, 07 - 05:38 pm Comment from: Emil

unfettered No you can not. It doesn't have Gbit, just 100Mbit. That's the only reason i'm not buying one :(
I would love to use it as a switch for my network but now I have to have a separate Gbit switch.

Why the FUCK doesn't it come with Gbit? Apple has been shipping macs with Gbit for years, why castrate the base station like this?

Feb 01, 07 - 06:57 pm Comment from: Adrian

Just a quick note to let you know that I just received my new Airport Extreme via courier here in Australia ... 3 weeks earlier than what is shown in my Apple Store estimated delivery!!

Cheers,

Adrian.

Feb 01, 07 - 07:44 pm Comment from: Cynic821

australia is gay

Feb 01, 07 - 08:03 pm Comment from: Adrian

Cynic821 ... when you said "Your wireless networking speed will only be as fast as your SLOWEST computer", this is not correct. Straight from the "Designing Airport Extreme 802.11n Networks" Apple Manual:

Choosing the Radio Mode
Choose “802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)” from the Radio Mode pop-up menu if computers with 802.11n, 802.11g, or 802.11b wireless cards will join the network. Each client computer will connect to the network and transmit network traffic at its highest speed.

Oh, and the "Australia is gay" line ... bit weak and childish. Grow up and get a life ... maybe you can buy one from your local Fast Food joint for $7.99.

Exellent news!

I'm off to buy one...

Feb 02, 07 - 01:13 pm Comment from: He is right

Cynic is right:

Based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes AirPort Extreme network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network.
