Apple significantly increases R&D budget, headcount - adds over 11,000 new employees since last year
Wednesday, November 05, 2008 - 03:58 PM EDT

"Apple filed its annual report for the 2008 fiscal year with the SEC today," Tricia Duryee reports for paidContent.org.

"At the end the year, the company had about 32,000 full-time equivalent employees and an additional 3,100 temporary equivalent employees and contractors. That increased tremendously from the year ago period when the company employed 21,600 full-time employees, and 2,100 temps," Duryee reports.

"This may have been driven in part by new store openings. The Company opened 50 new retail stores in 2008, bringing the total number of open stores to 247 as of September 27, 2008," Duryee reports.

"The Company's R&D budget continues to increase year-over-year. In 2008, it totaled $1.1 billion, increasing 41 percent from $782 million in 2007, which compared to $712 million in 2006," Duryee reports.

More interesting is the increase in R&D;budget compared to the small increase between 2006 & 2007.

Is there a breakdown of Steve's mock turtleneck costs? Must be a fortune.

Nov 05, 08 - 05:14 pm Comment from: steve516

I don't think so... he wears the same 10 black turtlenecks all month, and the same 10 blue jeans too.

While the others are slashing and burning ...

Nov 05, 08 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Rob

What are they doing? They should be closing R&D;and giving money back to shareholders... wait, wrong company.

Hey, why isn't Steve running for president?

hum, Any jobs in the Austin area open?

Nov 05, 08 - 06:18 pm Comment from: Macaday

If Apple increased its R&D;by 41%, then the sound you hear is of competitors shaking down to their bones...

Apple should have waited, Obama is giving away your tax dollars - $5000 for each new hire. Next year.

Expect the same program to require union membership for those new hires.

Nov 05, 08 - 07:31 pm Comment from: clunker

APPLE, DON'T DO IT!!!!

Keep the program sweet, modest, and effective. Maybe hire some more QC folks (ahem), but don't bloat out the program.

Don't go the way of MS, with a massive R/D black hole.

Nov 05, 08 - 07:34 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

Oh stop it with the "Obama" jokes.

The man is the President Elect of the United States, by a decisive margin.

You may agree or disagree with the policies and philosophies of President Obama, but he should be shown the respect that the office warrants.

Nov 05, 08 - 08:08 pm Comment from: @thelonius

Do you mean the same kind of respect that the Dems showed President Bush? Just wondering...

Nov 05, 08 - 08:10 pm Comment from: Macs King

iPhone and Touch iPod are the new Apple "tiny" platform. I'm glad to see them hire more R&D;people.

On another note, it's so nice to see Dell squirming uncomfortably and asking some of their employees to "please" take some time off . . . . . without pay. Goodbye low margin PC reseller, dude, nobody wants a Dell!

Nov 05, 08 - 08:15 pm Comment from: Al

He's not really President Obama yet, is he?

Nov 05, 08 - 08:25 pm Comment from: Mac Daddy

Hmmm... I wonder if the number of new jobs Apple has created in the past year exceeds the number of jobs Dell has eliminated.

There's a reason we all take the piss out of Bush. He's a draft dodging moron.

Eight years of foam-mouthed anti-Bush fanaticism, and people want to talk RESPECT?!?!

America has truly gone insane.

"America has truly gone insane."

well, SOME of America wink

Nov 06, 08 - 01:20 am Comment from: KingMel

@double standard

You voted for Bush *twice*, didn't you. I suspect that many of the ~50% who voted for him are now embarrassed to admit it. Those Bush votes were insanity. His sole claim to fame was being Governor of Texas, and he wasn't very good at that (I lived through it). He won the Presidency the first time using the same underhanded, lowbrow attack-and-hide tactics (probably crafted by Tom DeLay) that he used to become Governor.

Now before you go off spewing your meaningless 'liberal' retort, I am an independent who votes for the candidate, not the party. If the GOP lived up to its legacy of fiscal conservatism, then it might get a few more of my votes. But Republicans under Reagan and Bush caused about $5 or $6 trillion of our current debt (roughly 2/3 of the total), and the free market crashed horribly during both of these administrations due to greed and lack of regulation and oversight. I wish that people like you would go live somewhere else, because your idiotic, tunnel-visioned view of the world has just about ruined this country.

Nov 06, 08 - 01:26 am Comment from: MacMan

Can someone please explain what, exactly, is an "equivalent employee"? If one employee is twice as good as normal employees, is s/he counted as 2 "equivalent employees"? grin

Never mind- I guess 2 half-time permanent employees = 1 equivalent employee (even though they're half-time, they're not temps). Still, it's a funny term (and it doesn't tell you how many people they really employ)...

You can search for Apple jobs here.

Bush doesn't even get respect from his own party. How much stumping did he do with his party's candidate? He's been a recluse since his party decided to distance him from the base due to his ways.

You would be better off checking out SEEK in a real country. smile

Nov 06, 08 - 10:09 am Comment from: Yes on 8!

With the $100,000 Apple wasted supporting the hateful No on 8 terroristic type organization, they could have paid 2 or 3 Apple Store employees for a whole year! Or could have used it in R&D;to make a non glossy glass screen for the MBPro.....or..........

Nov 06, 08 - 10:45 am Comment from: Lady Love

I sure hope they are hiring all women, since women only make $.80 for each $1.00 that men make. That would save them a bundle.

Nov 06, 08 - 01:05 pm Comment from: bizlaw

Currently he is President Elect Obama, and will become President Obama once he takes the oath on Jan. 20, 2009.
