Apple slams Microsoft, Windows Vista again with another new ‘Get a Mac’ ad (with video)
Tuesday, October 21, 2008 - 10:15 PM EST

Apple has launched another volley in its assault on Microsoft and Windows Vista with a new "Get a Mac" TV commercial that has begin airing on U.S television networks this evening.

In Apple's new "Bakes Sale" ad, Windows PC explains that Microsoft's marketing guys are spending all the money on advertising Vista instead of actually fixing Vista, so he's holding a bake sale with rather pricey cupcakes.

Apple Web Ad: Bake Sale

MacDailyNews Take: PC's gonna have to sell a lot of cupcakes.

Apple is certainly getting Microsoft's money's worth. 8^)

"Well, marketing guy has finally decided"

Is "marketing guy" code for Ballmer?

Oct 21, 08 - 09:35 pm Comment from: pablo

When these ads began I was not too impressed. But, man on man are they really getting to me! (And I guess a lot of other people too.) Now I can't wait to see the next ones.

Keep it up Apple.

PS. Take the poll about your favorite Get A Mac ad in the upper left corner.

Oct 21, 08 - 09:53 pm Comment from: Ouch!

Right between the eyes!

Hope their customers don't demand that they actually fix it. After all, these people liked Windows 95 and XP.

Oct 21, 08 - 10:03 pm Comment from: jjjj

this one is great for the 'take a bite' and 'now overpay me' ending.

that's the real MSFT tax. You think its cheap until you are too far in. Ballmer wants to suck you dry.

Oct 21, 08 - 10:04 pm Comment from: elgarak

Oh man... That's golden!

Pure gold, on so many levels.

Oct 21, 08 - 10:05 pm Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

I don't like this one as much as the "bean counter" one, but it's still

humorous and pointed. Hodgman and Long have become quite a

team.

Oct 21, 08 - 10:10 pm Comment from: ericdano

They really should have put in a reference to the failed Seinfeld/Gates thing........

Oct 21, 08 - 10:11 pm Comment from: Cubert

Waaaaiiiiittttt........did someone say something about baked?

Maaaaaannnnnnnn..........

Oct 21, 08 - 10:39 pm Comment from: R2

These commercials aren't very authentic. They should slap some vaseline on Mac's face so that it glistens under those studio lights.

Oct 21, 08 - 10:48 pm Comment from: coolfactor

I can't stop laughing at the ending of this commercial.

"$10 million. Now you have to pay me because you had a bite."

He says it in a way that reflects MS's desperation (as we see it). I love it!

Oct 21, 08 - 11:05 pm Comment from: Lurker_PC

@Arnold Ziffel - agree with you. This ad was okay but not as clever as the Bean Counter ad. Does Apple still run similar Mac and PC ads outside of the US? I remember seeing a couple of British ads but with different actors. If the ads are being run outside the US, what's the local view of the ads?

Peace.

Oct 21, 08 - 11:12 pm Comment from: 10 million...

@ericdano

"They really should have put in a reference to the failed Seinfeld/Gates thing........"

You're kidding right? That was totally a dig at the Seinfeld thing...

$10 million for a bite.

Apple goes for the JUGULAR!

HA HA HA AHAHAHAHAHAH!

Oct 21, 08 - 11:14 pm Comment from: Derek in Milan

So good.

Humor is the very BEST form of advertising, and in this case, it smacks Micro$hit upside the head, which is a cool bonus.

The ads continue to cement the idea that there is only one computer that has a name - the Mac.

The rest are just 'computers', or PC's, which is the same as PC or 'politically correct' which stands for uptight jerks with no common sense working for the Government, or getting phoney Arts grants for movies about Lesbian Penguins.

The perfect image for Ballmer and Gates.

Oct 21, 08 - 11:29 pm Comment from: Spark

You know, the key to these ads has been the consistency of the theme. I think MS pulled the plug on the Gates/Seinfeld ads too soon. They might have pulled a following, even among begrudging Mac fans, had they let the gag mature.

Oct 21, 08 - 11:29 pm Comment from: DLMeyer

The sweetest part of these three most recent ads is there is no way Microsoft can duck or cover from them. No question they are true, nor any sensible argument about their truth. Their only choice is to either take their licking with a smile (bad enough) or try and make a fight out of it (and make it so much worse).

At least they "sort of" still have a choice. Well played by Apple. Quiet, conservative, stylish, and in excellent taste.

Oct 22, 08 - 12:34 am Comment from: ken1w

That one was actually kind of half-baked.

ZuneTang? Where are you these days?

Nothing to say?

"...The ads continue to cement the idea that there is only one computer that has a name - the Mac."

There is still The Thinkpad.

And i do not understand why every mac user is thinking : other hardware = pc = microsoft os.

Oct 22, 08 - 02:24 am Comment from: NoLongerUnlockedInEurope

I wish that Apple would bring these out even more often than it does. These ads always make me laugh!

Oct 22, 08 - 02:58 am Comment from: Yours Smugly

MegaMe:
"Is "marketing guy" code for Ballmer?"
Probably yes. Have a look at this excerpt from an interview with Steve:

"Jobs: So a different group of people start to move up. And who usually ends up running the show? The sales guy. John Akers at IBM is the consummate example. Then one day, the monopoly expires for whatever reason. But by then the best product people have left, or they're no longer listened to. And so the company goes through this tumultuous time, and it either survives or it doesn't.

Q: Is this common in the industry?
A: Look at Microsoft -- who's running Microsoft?

Q: Steve Ballmer.
A: Right, the sales guy. Case closed."

Oct 22, 08 - 03:02 am Comment from: Gosh

Stop this madness! I hate this negative advertising. Say something positive - show how exposé works, spaces, right clicking - anything but this diatribe.

If I have a favourite it's The Office posse one - you know "I don't see a ring on this finger"!

Oct 22, 08 - 05:42 am Comment from: Sheep Register

Microsoft brought a knife to a gunfight. It must really hurt to be on their marketing team.

Look for them to retaliate by dropping Office. It WILL happen.

Oct 22, 08 - 06:07 am Comment from: Cubert

@Greg,
Zune Tang is cowering in the corner somewhere in Redmond. He doesn't live there. He just feels safe there.

It's his "thpecial" place.

Oct 22, 08 - 06:09 am Comment from: Crabapple

Talk about half baked ideas!!!!!!

Oct 22, 08 - 06:20 am Comment from: Pete

I don't know what you are so happy about. This ad cost Mac ten million dollars. And for what, a lousy cupcake?

Oct 22, 08 - 06:54 am Comment from: scut

@t60

The vast majority of personal computers that aren't Apple run Windows. So yes...a non Apple computer = PC = Windows OS. Advertising has to generalize. They have 30-60 seconds to hammer home the selling point.

Oct 22, 08 - 07:05 am Comment from: Realista

Microsoft wouldn't recognize good marketing, let alone good advertising, even if it replaced the dreaded blue screen of death in its very own OS and had to see it several times every day.

Oct 22, 08 - 07:29 am Comment from: Sean

More 'Get a Mac' joy. Blowout 4th quarter. All we need is Steve Ballmer to reprise his role in 'Monkey Dance' and we have Apple perfection.

Oct 22, 08 - 08:03 am Comment from: auren

ROTFLMFAO !!!!!!!!!!!!

Oct 22, 08 - 08:22 am Comment from: Gabe

Microsoft have to stop competing with Apple, just join with someone else than Apple.

Oct 22, 08 - 08:28 am Comment from: ralph from berlin

no such ads here in germany. but ipod and iphone ads are the same as in the us. (in case of the iphone ads in german, of course)

Oct 22, 08 - 08:29 am Comment from: JoshtheiMacGuy

This is a hoot!

Where's the Pillsbury Doughboy when you need him?

Oct 22, 08 - 11:28 am Comment from: Andy

I'm all but convinced that Steve, or someone in Apple, reads MDN, since not only are those ads perfect but very close the running theme here for the last several months.

I do have to say this, as well; MS's incompetence is really rather breathtaking these days. Is it possible for a company to screw up so consistently, and so thoroughly?

I personally see MS becoming a marginal player in the next decade, perhaps peddling Office and nothing more.

Oct 22, 08 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Hussain

Anyone else notice the cupcake wasn't on the plate in the beginning but magically appeared on the plate to be handed to Mac?

Oct 22, 08 - 05:15 pm Comment from: Road Warrior (NLI)

Hussain: That is called "inference" regarding the cupcake. The cupcake appears on the plate after it was ordered. It is something that you don't see but that is inferred by all the other experiences when we order food and it is placed on the plate.

Lurker_PC...

"Does Apple still run similar Mac and PC ads outside of the US? I remember seeing a couple of British ads but with different actors. If the ads are being run outside the US, what's the local view of the ads? Peace".

I haven't seen them on TV here in England for a long time sadly.
The British campaign starred Robert Webb as Mac and David Mitchell as PC. IMHO they were good, but not a patch on the genius Long/Hodgman partnership. They may not be on TV but are still widely known and loved by UK Macheads.

We're getting to see far too much of that pathetic "I'm a PC" ad though...

Peace 2 U 2
