Apple soon to intro ‘world’s thinnest notebook,’ under 0.7 inches thin?
Friday, May 25, 2007 - 01:01 PM EDT

"A computer manufacturer is set to produce Intel's Metro ultraportable concept, according to sources in touch with BusinessWeek. The magazine claims that an unnamed builder will turn the prototype into reality later in the year. This would mark a radical departure from the company's traditional concepts, which are often shown at the company's in-house Developer Forums solely as inspirations for other manufacturers rather than direct blueprints," Electronista reports.

"Extra details about the Metro notebook have surfaced, the publication says, that may hint at its ultimate manufacturer. Created by the Oregon product design firm Ziba, the Metro achieves its record 0.7-inch thickness (slightly thicker than the Motorola RAZR V3) by using an entirely flash-based, solid-state hard drive in place of the conventional hard disk, freeing room for other components inside. The change would also improve battery life and would combine with a magnesium housing to weigh less than 2.3 pounds without an optical drive," Electronista reports.

MacDailyNews Take: Of course, Apple would need to lose the god-awful champagne with gold accents color scheme. Yuck. Notebooks shouldn't look like a Camry from Great Neck. Come to think of it, in a perfect world, Camrys from Great Neck shouldn't look like Camrys from Great Neck, either. Less is more, people, less is more.

astoundingly thin...
I hope the storage capacity is high enough to make it useful!

May 25, 07 - 01:11 pm Comment from: SNL

And we're proud to introduce Steve Jobs to show us the new Macbook, the picano!

May 25, 07 - 01:11 pm Comment from: Bob Jones

Doesn't seem like Apple would produce something they didn't design in-house.

May 25, 07 - 01:12 pm Comment from: Synthmeister

However compared to typical PC laptops, this one is quite sleek. At least it doesn't have all the extraneous buttons and tailfins most PC laptops seem to have.

May 25, 07 - 01:13 pm Comment from: Synthmeister

And what is the HD capacity again? Seems they failed to mention that.

May 25, 07 - 01:14 pm Comment from: MacAnimal

Eliminate the cd/dvd drive, some ports, matte screen instead of glossy and it could be as thick as two iPod Nano's. One if it's a tablet.

Remember the keyboard on the iPhone right?

May 25, 07 - 01:16 pm Comment from: macnut222

Note how the display hinge is like that of Apple's portables.

Ziba, scmeeba. They're just a front group for Apple. Maybe Jon Ive owns it.

May 25, 07 - 01:18 pm Comment from: KingMel

It certainly looks like a small form factor MacBook Pro (still want to type "Powerbook"!) - make a 12" Powerbook G4 thinner with a wide screen aspect ratio and it would look very similar.

It might now be a huge revenue source, but it would enhance Apple's increasing growth in the laptop market and would quickly become a favorite of travelers. Could you imagine traveling light with a combination of an Apple ultra portable and an iPhone grin

MDN MW "required" - Apple is required to produce an ultra portable MacBook

May 25, 07 - 01:19 pm Comment from: mm

If true, i hope its sturdier than the alum powerbooks (is magnesium stronger?) or they will be bent out of shape easily or damaged.

May 25, 07 - 01:20 pm Comment from: iSteve

LOL, I know two people with gold colored Camry's with garish gold lettering and trim. Neither are from greatneck though...

May 25, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Sniper Mac

No optical drive? No way.

May 25, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Great Neck

Great Neck, Long Island, New York here.

We take offense...

Aw, no we don't. Forget it. You're right.

May 25, 07 - 01:24 pm Comment from: Patent Pending

hmmm. doesn't this coincide with Apple's patent application for new form factor technology? (the article that was posted here a week or so ago?)

May 25, 07 - 01:27 pm Comment from: Chris

Please let it have two mouse buttons like the photos smile

May 25, 07 - 01:30 pm Comment from: Spark

I want one that I can roll up and stuff into my back pocket.

May 25, 07 - 01:31 pm Comment from: Crabapple

Can I slice bread with it?

May 25, 07 - 01:32 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

mm,
You took the words right out of my mouth.
Thin is good, but my experience with the Aluminum PowerBook taught me that ruggedness with laptops that undergoes years of daily use is more important that being ultra thin.

Time will tell if the new material in mac laptops will hold up.

Then again, if your the type of person that gets a new laptop every year, it won't mater.

May 25, 07 - 01:35 pm Comment from: Jesus

Hot damn, I'll take one.

May 25, 07 - 01:36 pm Comment from: YankInOz

OK... out on a limb here... I have an "old" 80 gig iPod that I can power with a little attachement with 4 AA batteries and I can use an USB connector to connect to the  iThin so that all the battery life of the  iThin is for oboard processing and hardwired memory only. I can have the files I need to access the net, make presentations, and "work" while travelling. The  iThin would be so sweet! smile I could work from home (as usual) - on a plane - while driving down the motorway (heeh) - and while beaching it on some island!!! Just think of the social!!! raspberry

MDN - island. As in "no  iThin is an island"...

May 25, 07 - 01:39 pm Comment from: Former Great Neck Resident

Great Neck? Don't you mean Great Nose?

May 25, 07 - 01:39 pm Comment from: Jesus

Take a gander at that article again.

May 25, 07 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Martin

i want one, i use only need an optical drive once a month or so.

the only problem is running games that need the original protected DVD to be present.

May 25, 07 - 01:51 pm Comment from: anaknipedro

If they make one out of organic materials, replace the battery with integrated photosynthesis a starch fuel cell, and make it flexible enough to fold and put in my front pocket, I'm in. Can you imagine Steve Jobs delivering his keynote, then uttering the famous, "One more thing...", pulling out of his front pocket the new MacBook Pro, and unfolding it to a deafening applause. But because the auditorium will be too dark, he will pull out a few bread crumbs and sprinkle them in the cracks of the keyboard and poof! Instant boot.

Okay, in all seriousness I think if this computer is indeed going to be built it will be by Apple. Combine this article with the recent patent application about Notebook case manufacturing techniques, the rumors about an ultra portable with no optical drive, and the rumor that Apple may include 3G wireless in upcoming laptops. The stars are aligning.

May 25, 07 - 01:55 pm Comment from: Rob

Ha, ha, ha, the Great Neck comment is GREAT!
Actually, I think it applies to all 5 boroughs and lower Westchester.

May 25, 07 - 01:58 pm Comment from: d

Please forgive my ignorance but is Airport n fast enough to efficiently access a HD and optical drive? If I could take the thing away from my desk and still burn a CD/DVD it would be amazing.

May 25, 07 - 02:02 pm Comment from: DogGone

As we all know, Apple will think of everything for a ultrathin book. Whether it will be strength, components, how to deal with the lack of optical drive.

Apple could even provide a 4 gig locked memory stick with the OS install files and lead the way for software companies to offer way other than DVD / CD as a method for software distributions.

Apple have always made bold decisions. This type of machine may be where some new boldness comes out.

May 25, 07 - 02:11 pm Comment from: coolfactor

Laptops with 2 mouse buttons are just plain confusing to use. Keep the single button.

It is a beautiful design, but only because it's a thinner version of the already existing PowerBooks/MacBook Pros.

May 25, 07 - 02:16 pm Comment from: Vista!

It is running windows vista on the screen I dont think Apple would want to show that as a OS if they were putting it out. If anything they would have XP.

May 25, 07 - 02:17 pm Comment from: coolfactor

A close look at the last photo reveals what appears to be an iSight camera. Intel never designed this laptop, they just modified Apple's design. grin

""...which are often shown at the company's in-house Developer Forums solely as inspirations for other manufacturers rather than direct blueprints.""

Sadly most PC developers choose to emulate their other design concept, the PC with a bajillion LEDs and useless buttons concept.

Why do you have to use the name of diety to express yourself, MacDailyNews? Are you lacking vocabulary, or are you just adding in extra words to make your opinion sound more convincing? It's like adding features that are not necessary to a product, just in case someone else may have something with more.

Seriously, though. Many here would appreciate your efforts to keep it professional.

Well, I agree that I wouldn't want a champagne colored notebook. I personally think that the white Macbook is "God awful" looking... It looks cheap, like a toy. MacBook Pro's are nice, but I'm ready for a different look, it's getting pretty stale.

May 25, 07 - 04:06 pm Comment from: Masa

That "champagne" looks so crap.

But damn... 17,8mm and less? iPhone is 11,6mm thick.

That's damn thin....

I'm just wondering if that display bends too much?

May 25, 07 - 04:14 pm Comment from: G4Dualíe

Apple's Mac Book Pro is a work of art. Ziba's Metro is an Elvis painting on velvet, worthy of Microsoft.

May 25, 07 - 04:14 pm Comment from: Kei

This time I am not agree with the Macdailynews Take. I and surely many other people do find that Champagne/Gold color very interesting for a laptop. I like that Intel dared to do that.

And what would happen if Apple tomorrow unveils a ultra-portable MacBook Pro in Champagne/Gold color? Then, Macdailynews will say: "Awsome, beautiful, great... that will be on fashion"

May 25, 07 - 04:49 pm Comment from: Christian

So what do yyou do when Most of your apps are on CD's.

It's won't be that easy to transfer everything to a USB Flash Drive on another computer.

Or do you need to spend hudreds on a bulky exterior Optical drive.

Opticaless Drived Laptop seems useless to me.

May 25, 07 - 04:59 pm Comment from: @dave

dave, god-awful is not a deity's NAME. 'Tis the difference between a name and noun.

For a deity's name that few know look up Psalm 83:18 in any
"old" King James Version. (curiously removed from the new one)

Jay-Z is god?! Oh noes...

May 25, 07 - 06:25 pm Comment from: Steven - Pissing off Mr. Jobs

While this is a concept of what can be done with low-heat processors and a removed hard-drive, this is not just something Intel has thought up from thin air to get developers interested in the design.

Intel may not know the shape and design of the upcoming Apple MacBook Pro thin, but they can certainly guess.

This is a product designed to license to other PC vendors. "Intel has done all the RnD for you. Just license, build and sell!" Intel will say. Intel is great at specification and platform design, so they are taking it a step further in delivering a finished product to license.

This is going to really piss off Steve Jobs - without question.

Why Intel would hack off their only major Intel-only partner is just rediculous. Paul had better know that Steve will not hold back any punches, and just as OS X had been Intel in the closet for five-years, Intel had better not be so dumb as to think Apple does not have OS X for AMD ready to go at a moments notice as well - because it surly does.

This is just a flat out dumb move by Intel, and in the long-term, does no one any favors.

@Christian:

There's a thing called the internet. Its really cool because it allows you to download apps and upload data to other computers. Try it sometime; it'll make you forget all about that old optical drive of yours.

May 25, 07 - 09:43 pm Comment from: golly

DIDN'T ANYONE realise theres something wrong with the keyboard?????

Look at the size of the laptop, it's only twice the length of that motorola phone. It's TINY.

Now look at the keyboard...

It looks like my 14" iBook G4. Except it's probably only 12 inch or less.

Those keys are tiny... the only people that can probably use them are kids.

May 25, 07 - 10:15 pm Comment from: DogGone

With the exception of the collosal apps like PS etc, there isn't much need for CD installers. Most of the time I DL the installers. Turbo Tax was a good example.

Another thing is that apps often need updating after the initial release. Updating the online version is invisible to the user.

There is still some need for DVD drive for installing software, but for a ultra-thin notebook, it may be better to have an plug-able drive for the odd occasion it is needed.

If you watch a lot of DVDs whilst traveling then this machine would not be for you necessarily. However importing DVDs onto the HD would be an alternative.
