“Apple’s ambition may be starting to get ahead of the company’s ability to achieve it,” Troy Wolverton writes for The Mercury News.
“Renowned in recent years for its operational excellence, Apple in the past two months has delayed two high-profile products, the Apple TV set-top box and now, it said Thursday, Leopard, the upcoming update to its OS X operating system. The company pushed back the release date of Leopard so it wouldn’t have to delay an even more highly anticipated product, the iPhone,” Wolverton writes.
Wolverton writes, “The problem Apple is running into is that it’s a relatively small company compared with tech giants such as Hewlett-Packard and IBM, said Van Baker, an analyst with research firm Gartner. As of last fall, Apple had about 18,000 full-time employees, compared with 156,000 for HP, according to the companies’ annual reports. ‘Clearly there’s evidence that they’re not executing to the same level they have in the past,’ Baker said.”
“While Apple hasn’t been known for such delays, they’re not surprising, Baker said, noting that Apple is ‘broadening their product offering, and they have only so many engineering resources to go around,'” Wolverton writes.
Wolverton writes, “Apple said Thursday that it was delaying Leopard, the fifth update of its OS X operating system, because it had to pull some of its engineering and quality assurance personnel from that project to help out with the iPhone. The much-hyped device, which Apple plans to release in June, will contain a new, slimmed-down version of the OS X operating system, which powers Apple’s Macintosh computers.”
Wolverton writes, “By shifting resources to the iPhone, the company is favoring an unproven product that will compete in a very challenging industry, notes Richard Shim, an analyst with IDC, a market research firm. The delay – and the reason behind it – are ‘a risk and a sign of how Apple is changing and diversifying,’ Shim said. ‘It’s also a sign that they’ll have to be more careful with spreading themselves too thin.'”

He has NO, NONE, NADA information to support his conclusions.
He just pulls this stuff out of his butt as usual.

Where? Where is this evidence? Show us.
Apple needs to just be Apple. Just because they’re growing and experiencing some success doesn’t mean they need to start acting like Google or Microsoft. No more pre-announcing products (aTV, Leopard, iPhone…)
They need to do what they do best: announce and release products the same day. It’s really cool that way.
big FNDeal. Apple is a month late with Apple TV and 4 mos late w/ an OS and the sky is falling.
Oh, and another thing, more employees does not a better company make! Enough with the “analysis” that says Apple has delayed products because of shortage of employees!
In the last couple of years, Apple has released more compelling and innovative products than IBM, HP, and Microsoft combined.
Yeah, because 60,000+ employees and growing have really helped Microsoft to become a company that delivers quality. useful, customer-focused products, in a reasonable timeframe.
You idiots always whine about people on here whining about Apple not being on time for products. Everyone has a right to their own whining opinion. That being said.
http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=199000915
Apple DOES need to grow up and hire more workers if they continue to branch out like this. Like the article above says, these are “Growing pains.” And it is the customer who gets to feel it with waiting, and semi-mediocre products (apple tv, its great, I have one, but yeah, doesn’t do as much as I wished, but oh well, it’s still proof that maybe Apple should have taken more time in developing the product and NOT announce it so soon).
The real problem is that Apple is aggressively playing the market (read: Wall Street) to enhance its stock value, while attemtping to preserve a tradition (don’t ask me why) that makes it pin key product announcements to either MacWorld or WWDC, which are held on loosely fixed dates.
These, of course, may or may not be aligned with engineering, manufacturing and distribution channel realities.
HP has 156,000 employees and makes hardware
Microsoft has 76,000 employees and makes software
Apple has 18,000 employees and makes hardware and software that is superior to both of the above companies. It doesn’t sound to me like Apple has a problem with their resources.
Amazing isn’t it? M$ shift the timescale on Longhorn/Vista, all the pundits yawn. Apple do it and suddenly the sky falls in.
On a related note, have you noticed how the slightest cough from Cupertino now leads every Tom, Dick and Harriet to prognosticate ad absurdam, and do so beyond all reason?
I wish I could get paid for writing shite like this

I agree with that, they aren’t as big as some of the competitors and resources are naturally scarce. but, I think that management will see and expand as they see fit. i don’t think there’s much to worry about as long as apple paces itself a bit better so that quality doesn’t diminish the good will and publicity they’ve built the last couple years.
MDN word: enough – there’ll be enough to go around soon enough
“Apple has 18,000 employees and makes hardware and software that is superior to both of the above companies. It doesn’t sound to me like Apple has a problem with their resources.”
BUT they still delayed Leopard! They DO have a problem. Quit worshipping the wormy fruit and wake up to reality.
Perhaps someone should remind all these folks that Apple more than a year ago publicly stated that they would be slowing their development cycle from the previous 18 mo. to a more sedate pace. So, what is a couple of months getting things just right?
“MacDailyNews Take: You can’t shift paradigms without pushing the envelope beyond the limit. And Troy Wolverton’s penchant for the negative angle on anything to do with Apple is tiresome”
WOOO HOOO ANYTHING ever said about Apple that is Negative is not only tiresome, but a conspiracy by Microsoft and the trolls they send here to MDN. I think it’s great that 10.5 is going to be delayed!! It was great that Apple TV was delayed and I absolutely LOVE the blurry images it produces on my TV!!!!!!
Out job as Apple users is not criticize but to blindly follow Steve!!!
WOOOO HOOOOOO
Yeah, so Apple’s got only 18,000 employees against HP’s 156,000. So, has HP released any game changing products recently? Invented anything new lately? Has Dell or Microsoft? I didn’t think so.
Apple remains cauldron of creativity, despite its size. If an original product like Apple TV comes out of the gate three weeks later than expected, BFD! A next generation OS to set the bar yet higher for the competition is delayed four more months, and for some Apple is suddenly over-extended? OK, so hire more top talent; that’ll take a while. But meanwhile Tiger is more than fine.
The whipping will continue until the moral improves. – captains joke.
Speaking any sort of dissent on here is useless. Fanboys are deaf.
But I must laugh when I see this:
“It was great that Apple TV was delayed and I absolutely LOVE the blurry images it produces on my TV!!!!!!”
Why the hurry for !0.5 when 10.4.9 is the best OS available. There is no need to hurry when one is already the best. Getting the iPhone out is important, and it must work well (as does Leopard).
Braindead. The power of launching a brand new product category is WAY more important than an OS X upgrade, financially, and historically.
Does Apple need to get bigger? Sure, but great smart interesting people are hard to find.
Unlike other tech companies, Apple products are not one-offs. They’re a family of intertwined products whose developments occur in tandem. It’s an ecosystem.
Apple produces the most solid, comprehensive product line in the tech industry. And to do that, they must set their own pace.
Anyone who claims that their lives are affected by Apple’s slight shifts in scheduling is a drama queen. Honestly, do your lives fall apart when Levi’s doesn’t bring out new pants at regularly scheduled intervals?
Dumbest. Article. Ever.
They are not over-extended. They are pushing. The difference is the locus of control.
Pushing and pulling something off is remarkable. This is a sort of turning point (Tipping Point ®). If there’s ever a time to push, it’s now when M$ is sucking its own wind.
Go, Steve, Go!!
If your Apple TV is producing “blurry” images, you need to correctly set your Apple TV settings for your monitor.
RTFM or at least poke around in the Apple TV Settings until you set it up correctly before you make baseless claims.
My Apple TV produces sharp, crisp images and video because I set it up properly.
I don’t think the guy who wrote that his apple tv images are blurry is complaining about set-up issues, but the quality of the downloaded shows/videos from iTunes.
Don’t complain that your BMW runs poorly because you filled the gas tank with lemonade.
“Troy Wolverton’s penchant for the negative angle on anything to do with Apple “
I won’t argue Wolverton’s (or any MS fanboy’s) penchant for negativity, but the simple matter is that Apple basicly admitted to robbing Peter to pay Paul. From a business perspective, that says a lot about how Apple operates (at this particular time) and none of it is good.
For a reasonable assessment from a pro-Mac developer about what it implies and why, check this out:
http://www.red-sweater.com/blog/321/leopard-isnt-the-problem
There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again…
There is no bigger fan of Apple out there than I. Been running and buying Apples since the Apple // – bought the first Mac and have been buying them ever since. My business depends on the Mac. Without it we would crumble (windows is NOT an alternative for us – most people here would quit before they tried to use CS2 or 3 or any number of other programs on Windows).
But – I am sorely disappointed in this news. I was, as a fan boy, planning on buying an iPhone, even with a switch from reliable Verizon (for me) to an unproven service. But Leopard was WAY more important to me. Sure I want it right, but I, too, think Apple may be stretching resources. Fingers are crossed. But I REALLY wanted to be running Leopard.
Size of the company is not that important. I believe that Apple works smarter than a lot of companies. Jobs said as much himself not so long ago when commenting on the size of Apple’s R&D budget (which is much smaller than many other companies).
Nothing is not holding Apple back from hiring more people, if they need to.
Yeah, I don’t think this is “negative” press so much as “cautionary”.
There are enough ignorant Apple Bashers to beat down. I think Wolverton’s piece is informative, and his tone is not hysterical, unlike some other very recent crazies.
Troy was more Apple negative when he was with thestreet.com. He calmed down until recently. His demotion to the Mercury must have hurt his feelings.
I seem to remember an article on MDN about when a company starts adding more (Programmers) to projects that the additions actually slow the process down. I think the topic was Vista. I’m just wondering if it is happening here. Man I was looking forward to Leopard.
You can’t shift paradigms without pushing the envelope beyond the limit. And MacDailyNews penchant for the negative angle on anything to do with Microsoft is tiresome
Vista was delayed from 2003 – 2007, is Microsoft over-extended?
Oh, and part of the reason Vista was delayed was so that they could fix the <u>security</u> problems in XP.
All those Apple employees – these days a lot of them work in stores, serving customers (aka real people). That’s a lot better than how Microsoft spends most of it’s salaries, paying lawyers to rip other companies off and defend customer lawsuits for defective software and over-pricing.
One more thing, Apple announced the delay over two months in advance (13th April vs 21st June), when did Microsoft announce the final delay to Vista?
My take is: Given that VISTA is not being received well, it gives Apple time to include features that otherwise they would have left out had they felt the need to compete with VISTA. Also, it might give them chance to release the OS. simultaneously with new hardware. I hope this is the case.
“RTFM or at least poke around in the Apple TV Settings until you set it up correctly before you make baseless claims.”
You can read all the manuals you want, you’re not going to make 640X480 look good on a 50″ screen.
FWIW, As of February 2006, I have no more PCs in my house (I was a DOS user since version 2.1 and through all the versions of Windows). I have a G4 Digital Audio, an Intel Mini, and (3) G4 iBooks. Making notice of obvious problems is not being “negative”, it’s simply stating fact….
You guys can WOOO YOOO all you want. Yeah, Vista is a “failure”, that’s why is currently has more users than Tiger does….
Rah Rah Rah Fanboy nonsense only goes so far. If Apple wants to be real competition to Windows they need to license other manufactures to make their hardware so they can concentrate on OSX and their little telephones and iPods… (Regardless of what you fanboys say, Apple’s hardware is just pretty overpriced PC’s now that they are using Intel microprocessors)
“Apple is a hardware company” doesn’t cut it anymore. They’re not large enough to supply a large market, and from the latest news, they don’t seem really interested in it either….
Otherwise, our platform will go the way of the Amiga and other superior platforms that didn’t have enough support to be appreciated by the masses.
Troy is just hacked off because he didn’t invest in Apple when it was $9 a share, and when it was $45, and again when it was $85 and again when it split, and now when it’s $90.
If Troy were smart and not emotional, he would have been on the gravy train that is AAPL long ago, but instead he hold onto his Redmond glory days and says bitter.
Pride causes such stupidity.

A book about how adding manpower to a late software project only makes it later was written in 1975. It is called The Mythical Man-Month. It was written by someone who understood software engineering. Since M$ doesnt seem to understand any of the principles of good software design/engineering, it is no wonder they fell victim to it.
“Apple spreading itself too thin?”

Delaying Leopard to release the iPhone? This makes no sense. The iPhone is a novelty. How many iPhones are you going to sell compared to copies of Leopard?
Mindless Fanboy is MacDude is Andy is Peterson is Yadayadayada. “Trusted Computing is evil” post in 4…. 3…. 2….
There is no Leapord delay! Jobs promised it this Spring, but failed to mention which hemisphere. Just because a bunch of analysts assumed it was the northern hemisphere doesn’t make it true.
Apple will deliver Leapord as promised, Spring 2007, sometime between Sept 21 and Dec 21 in the Southern hemisphere.
Everything else is FUD.
iPhone is a good and reasonable excuse for delaying Leopard, but I think it’s just a decoy. You just can “shift resources” between two very different products with two months to go and expect signficant efficiencies or time savings. It’s better to let the people who have been doing the work focus on getting it done, rather than have them train the new people. So that’s not the story… iphone will be completed in June. I don’t think that was ever in jeopardy.
The real Leopard delay story is that Apple wants to add some significant new functionality to Leopard. It might be something that was previously cut but is back in. Or it might be an unannounced feature that would have to be cut, to meet the “spring” deadline. Or maybe Apple just need more testing/fixing time. Whatever it is, Leopard will be worth the extra wait.
Why would Apple do this? Apple does not see Vista as a threat anymore. If Vista adoption was seen as hindering Mac OS X adoption (more than XP would have), Apple may have rushed Leopard out the door. Instead, the Vista fiasco may be helping Mac OS X adoption. Windows switchers don’t care if it’s Tiger or Leopard; they don’t want Vista. Therefore, Apple decided to delay Leopard until October, make it better and more solid, and let Tiger do what it’s been doing for a few extra months.
Everybody, including MDN, seems to have forgotten that the iPhone runs a version of LEOPARD.
@ShadowMac
I did not forget….that is it is called the LeapoardisLateAppleTVwasLateiPhoneWillbeLateTooWeDrinkTooMuchKoolAid Dept.
Until Leopard is ready for press…no product using it can be ready for press.
Ah now ppl are thinking!
Just my $0.02
> Everybody, including MDN, seems to have forgotten that the iPhone runs a version of LEOPARD.
So… It hasn’t been forgotten, but it is irrelevant. You can’t boot a Mac off an iPhone.
I don’t understand some of the wining over the 10.5 delay: how can the delay of the release of 10.5 be CRITICAL to your business? If your computers are critical to your business, why put a new OS update on a production computer? Wait until a few patches have been released and even then, test it thoroughly as to not disrupt the existing workflow.
iPhone is incredibly hyped so expections for a quality product are high. Therefore, the product must be PERFECT (no minor bugs). I agree with a previous post: Vista’s less of a threat so it’s ok to delay 10.5. 10.5 will come under incredible scruitny as well as it will be seen as Apple’s ‘reply’ to Vista so, it too, needs to be a very solid product at launch.
> Until Leopard is ready for press…no product using it can be ready for press.
Nonsense. The version of OS X in iPhone just has to run perfectly on one device, and support no third party peripherals or software. The released version of Mac OS X Leopard has to run perfectly all the Intel Macs and most of the PPC Macs, and support countless third party peripherals and software. See the difference…?
You guys are hilarious. You find his penchant for anything negative regarding Apple tiring. Jeez, sound familiar!?
Its been my experience that those who are quick to point the finger can not handle having it pointed back at them. Definitely a case of calling the kettle black because MDN is the king of negative review regarding anything Microsoft and Troy Wolverton is merely the reflection in MDN’s mirror.
Time will show that this was the wise decision. Apple needs to get the iPhone to market because it is a new product. Leopard can wait because Tiger is very stable. The only concern would be if Micropenis gets a SP1 out for Fista and it gets good hype.
macgoog
Delaying Leopard to release the iPhone? This makes no sense. The iPhone is a novelty. How many iPhones are you going to sell compared to copies of Leopard?
I’ll go with 2 million copies of Leopard in a month and 4 million iPhones in the same period.
Apple? Maybe. But that’s obviously not a problem for Rosie O’Donnell.
Leopard is CRITICAL to my business. I don’t even know what’s in it, but I HAVE to have it by June. PERIOD! Now what will I do?
My business will go down the tubes! I’ll have to switch to Windows. And now I have this unidentifiable sore on my toe. And I’ll probably get herpes!
Damned you Apple! Damned you to pieces!
Thar’s BS. Working Apple retail really does suck though.
Rubbish! Working Apple retail really sucks though!!
Announcement Post Yesterday MDN
From: Hard, Tough Take
Apr 13, 07 – 12:23 am
1- Apple needs to hire more software engineers. They have +/- 1,000 SW engineers in their employ & with an expanding line of applications and platforms (Mac/iPod/iPhone/TV/Server), it’s obvious they need more. With a UNIX base, I’m sure more than a few former SGI, IBM, SUN & other SW engineers could be found. They should have a not too difficult learning curve.
2- Apple needs to expand it’s beta testing program. More testers would make for faster bug ID and save a lot of diagnostic time better used quashing bugs.
3- This means that the back-to-school sales season will feature Macs without the new OS. One can only guess at the sales hit.
“Troy Wolverton’s penchant for the negative angle on anything to do with Apple

So I read it and guess what. It isn’t a reasonable assessment. But It is an arrogant one. Operating System development requires experience and discipline. Good OS Developers are not so easy to find, just look at Microsoft. If one woman takes 9 months to have a baby you can’t get nine women pregnanat and get a baby in a month. Most of you are too young to have read “The Mythical Man Month”, but if you want to understand the problems of growing versus scheduling I suggest you read it. Leopard is shipping on time. It is the original announced date that was wrong.
Apple, the ex-Computer company is betting its future on gadgets and toys.
> This means that the back-to-school sales season will feature Macs without the new OS. One can only guess at the sales hit.
Since the alternative is a PC with Windows Vista, I’d say the “sales hit” will be minimal. If a student needs a computer, the purchase will not be delayed to wait for Leopard.
Vista’s lukewarm (at best) reception allowed Apple to take this delay without too much risk. If Vista had been greeted with massive popularity (or even modest acceptance), I’m sure Apple would have cut features and cut-short testing to get Leopard shipped as early as possible. As it stands now, Tiger is more than enough to put up against Vista. PC switchers don’t care if it’s Tiger or Leopard, as long as it’s not Vista.
Tommy Boy
You a carpenter?? Cus you sure hit that nail on on the head!!
My thoughts exactly.
I think Apples’ size IS the advantage!
Is everyone worried someone else is going to do better …..Sooner!
Give me a fucking break!!!
TR
So what should they do??? spend more money on potentially poor developers that cant yet be trusted to rush the worlds most advanced OS to market… I think not.. they already have the worlds most advanced OS currently on the market.. I say they did the right thing, and are playing it safe.
What everyone seems to be missing the importance of is that Apple is producing a single OS code base for ALL its platforms, Macintosh, Apple TV, iPhone and presumably in the future the 6G iPod. This will give Apple an ENORMOUS advantage in terms or innovating and improving the software across all its products. At this moment we are seeing the strain of making that happen (a 4 month Leopard delay) but once this is done Apple will be the nimblest, fastest most productive software engineering company and that will be achieved without adding huge numbers to their software engineering staff.
pdb,
I totally agree. As previously mentioned, Apple products are not one-offs. They’re an ecosystem of intertwined products whose developments occur in tandem.
Apple produces the most solid, comprehensive product line in the tech industry. And to do that, they must set their own pace.
Would you really want a bunch of disconnected, barely interoperable devices?
http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/04/13/pcw_leopard/index.php
Apple really DID drop the ball on mac computers, of which I am barely disappointed since I love my old school Powermac G5. And you people who whine about the whiners don’t understand the frustration of waiting that Apple is making its consumers go through. It really *is* a waiting game, and everyone is just going to have to stop visiting Apple news and rumor sites and get back to living life offline. That’s a lot to ask for, Apple! But I hope Leopard will be worth the wait!
toonie,
Is that you Troy? I’m sorry, but you are no more than a piece of dust, a minute one at that, on Apple’s mirror!
I think there’s a chance that Leopard was supposed to release in Spring as defined April – May but fell behind. Once it slips to June it bumps into iPhone and Apple can’t mess up ATTs plans so it has to push Leopard later. Marketing, PR etc can only work so many product lines at once and 2 major releases would have been taxing. Once it became clear that April wasn’t going to happen Apple could focus on iPhone knowing Leopard was off until at least August-September.
Probably not but I’ve read stupider notions in the last 2 days.
Badly written but I’m too tired to re-read and edit.
I don’t buy the line that leopard is being delayed because of the iPhone, I don’t care what Apple says. Mr. Steve’s companies CAN chew gum and walk. Me guess is that Vista is just that lame, and there is no need to have the iPhone and leopard competing against each other for sales during the same month.
Digital Mercenary
“Leopard is shipping on time. It is the original announced date that was wrong.”
Well put! Thx.
I love apple, But i do think they should go back to keeping everything a secert until the day of the release. I have been waiting for leopard since they first showed it at mac world. So this kinda kills it for me.
Agree with article.
Apple is acting like some tiny boutique software company.
Management could not figure out how to allocate resources properly to do all jobs at once?
(And lets not discuss the lack of other new products….)
Kind of like George Bush and Iraq – not bringing in enough troops early enough.
Apple is obviously betting the farm on the iPhone.
Hope it is not an iFlop.
Computers now come third at Apple after iPhone and iPOd.
@Mindless Fanboy
“Apple is a hardware company” doesn’t cut it anymore. They’re not large enough to supply a large market, and from the latest news, they don’t seem really interested in it either….
I guess 100 million iPods is child’s play?
P.S. And 1280×720 > 640×480. Try getting your HD from legal alternate sources (even if it they are not mainstream movies
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> )
MDN is exhibiting very poor business sense with their comments… it has nothing to do with pushing the paradigm shift and more on how to effectively execute a business plan.
Tired of Retards:
Best. Take. Evah!
LOL!
“P.S. And 1280×720 > 640×480. Try getting your HD from legal alternate sources (even if it they are not mainstream movies”
Wait a minute… Apple markets the ATV as a way to push content purchased from Itunes Store to your bigscreen TV. What they are selling is complete garbage, period…
But if you read some of the fanboy apologists posts on this forum your will read, “They’re an ecosystem of intertwined products whose developments occur in tandem”.. How nice and wordy. So tell me, why do I want to watch crap quality movies (or even, OK quality movies) on a HDTV???
“I guess 100 million iPods is child’s play?”
That’s real nice… I could care less about an iPod.. It’s great that some do, but I want high quality computer system..
I am an OSX fanatic. But as I mentioned, there is nothing special about Apple Hardware other than it costs twice what a comparable system from any other major manufacture (ie. Crappy Dells)…. Apple needs to license the right to manufacture the hardware to real computer companies…
Bottom line, Computers are not important to Apple anymore… They want their silly iPhone which isn’t worth anything for business people (Yeah, I can’t wait to tell my boss my email is going to change from Joe@abc.com to Big_Joe73493@yahoo.com ) and I’m going to spend my day listening to music….
Wasn’t there a relatively recent video posted somewhere with Jobs attending a town hall meeting about taking over some other buildings in SF because Apple had outgrown it’s digs in Cupertino?
So maybe it’s just a matter of time for them to inhabit the new campus.
While I’m not thrilled about the delay in leopard anymore than anyone else, I think it’s good sign that Apple is obviously growing a little too fast for the real estate it currently has. Given the alternative of trying to find talented people to fill your over extended real estate holdings.
Chalk this one up to growing pains.
I’ve come to realize that MDN obviously spins things on the extreme side for the sake of generating traffic. You can’t be a reasonable person and agree with even half the things they say, let alone write it in a public forum.
Reading something you agree with all the time gets boring and tiresome. Reading and arguing against the outrageous keeps people coming back.
But… it’s surprising how many readers go along for the ride and blindly agree with them.
Apple has 18,000 employees and makes hardware and software that is superior to both of the above companies.
You’d think Apple, HP and all the rest have manufacturing in Cuperfsckingtino, or even in any other country that pays its workers more than slave wages and where it’s against the law to bar the fire exits.
The worker-manufacturing ratio is as meaningless as discussions regarding it.
Mindless Fanboy,
Apple does get other companies to make their hardware. Apple does not make any of their computers. Their hardware does not sell for twice what comparable Dells sell for. Comparable Dells sell for about the same price.
You really have no idea what you are talking about. Ripped DVD’s look great on TV. Can you say MediaFork?
If you are such an OS X fanatic you would know that OS X 10.4.9 is a great OS and Leopard is not really needed just yet. You would know the Leopard delay is no big problem.
You would also know that if you really wanted to get OS X working on your wonderful cheap-ass Dell, you could. Do a Google search. Lots of geeks have OS X working on generic Intel and AMD iron.
I have a feeling that you’re not that much of an OS X fanatic.

He’s kidding, . . .right?
Didn’t he listen to the Keynote about how big the phone market is? It is double digit “times” larger than the PC market, and the units last about half as long. That, and most people are disatisfied with the phones they have at present.
iPhones, iPods and Apple TV are all founded on the terra firma of OSX and iTunes. That alone gives them a tremendous advantage over any other products.
If the iPhone is realy as good as it looked at the Keynote, it will devastate its competitors. They don’t have iTunes and OSX behind them, . . . and because it’s in the software, the iPhone can evolve easily. Don’t you guys get it? Why do you think Steve had that stupid grin on his face? !!!!

I do hope that it includes ‘file maker’ lite data base. Just the basics That wold be cool.
Anyone know anthing? Or is this another sign of ‘spreading thin’? (I think last time Appleworks was actually purchased from a developer…. Isn’t that how it works?) Or are their serious technical glitches with iphone, Ipod, and regular computer stuff? Are we asking the OS to do to much?
My feeling is that I don’t want a Dell/ Microsoft “experience” on my G5 Imac. I have enough of Dell/ Microsoft at work I don’t want it on my home computer…..
@Mindless Fanboy,
I have an idea. Why don’t you simply create your own high quality computer system! Develop your own OS. Run your own tech business.
Apple doesn’t owe you anything. They don’t owe you a high quality computer system. They don’t owe you an OS upgrade. They’re a business. And they develop what they want when they want. They don’t care that you could care less about an iPod. They don’t care whether you want to watch crap quality movies (or even, OK quality movies) on a HDTV??? They don’t care for your opinion on how marketable or valuable or usable the iPhone will be for “business people.” (I’m guessing they’ll make more money on the iPhone from “business people” than you’ll ever make in your life.)
High quality computer systems? Can you honestly say that the systems we’re working on today (G5s or Mac Pros) are less high quality than a Quadra or a Power Mac 8500? Is Leopard going to make your system more high quality than it is with Tiger? Is it really a make-or-break OS proposition for you?
I think you’re a blathering idiot. Here’s an idea. Why don’t you simply change your name to “Mindless.”
Feel free to flame away. But keep in mind before you do: F*CK OFF!
Yeah, Vista is a “failure”, that’s why is currently has more users than Tiger does….
Anyone is entitled to have opinions but the above is simply not true. Microsoft says it sad delivered (not sold) 20 millions copy of Vista to market. This includes copies *sent* to resellers and pre-installed versions on new PCs.
This said, 20 millions is ALREADY less than Mac OS X users, and of those 20 millions shipped copies even Microsoft is so ashamed to reveal how many have been actually sold.
Statistics on the Web (for what they are worth) show Vista even trailing Windows ME and less than half Mac OS X percentage.
Vista is more than a failure: it is a total disaster.
PS
Here at the lab Vista is not EVEN on any plans for testing and checks for the entire 2007 and first 2Q of 2008. IF, and that is a big IF, will be taken into account for TESTING it will be end 2008. And that again… IT seriously looking at alternatives, Linux first, Mac OS X part of it and, low and behold, PDF is now the recommended format to send around documents, even from people having Word. Seeing there a hint for a smooth disentangling from Microsoft chains.
Says Who? it’s already sold more copies than Mac OS X ever has with all preceeding versions.
Again, whatever. There is NO a single source for that information. Not even Microsoft. The only reliable numbers are 20 millions copies SHIPPED.
NOT sold. Capish?
I doubt you are able to grasp the difference. When Microsoft talks about SHIPPED and not SOLD tell a lot.
Apple Hardware other than it costs twice what a comparable system from any other major manufacture (ie. Crappy Dells)
Go ahead tool, get me a crappy Dell equipped like a 4-core or 8-core MacPro (exactly equipped) or a MacBook that cost HALF of the Apple products.
Not even Dell is able to do that: MacBook here at the lab cost 140CHF LESS than Dell price and the Inspirons are even more expensive than the MacPro. (Edu prices)
Nice to see those turd Dell representatives trying to climb glass walls to reduce the price to MATCH Apple’s.
Apple is not spreading itself too thin. The new products are built on the same basis (OSX) and are basically adapted computers. So I see this more as organic growth, weaving the web, or lining up the ducks to create a more compelling product offering. All the products fit very well together and will draw lots more people to using Apple products.
So a little delay is not an issue as the current version of OSX is really good.
The trouble with comparing Apple with larger companies is the inherent assumption that if you double the number of employees, they will be of similar quality and creativity as the ones you already have. Sadly, not the case. The number of intellegent people is finite.
Apple over-extended? Come on! It’s only delayed 90 frickin’ days!
Best line on here so far that proves the “over stretched” argument is pure crap…. “Vista was delayed from 2003 – 2007, is Microsoft over-extended?”
Apple needs 90 more days to groom the Leopard. Simple.
MDN Word: “Strength”. Apple has plenty of strength in their numbers already.
Rubbish! Working Apple retail is like feeding baby food to retards all day. Gets old quick.
Apple is admittedly late with AppleTV.
Apple is admittedly late again with 10.5.
Apple has promised iPhone June 2007.
Once is an aberration, twice is a trend. If the iPhone is not made ready by June then Apple has certainly lost its way. If Apple cannot produce products on time as promised and as expected isn’t that evidence enough that something fundamentally wrong is happening in Cupertino? If iPhone is late and/or if 10.5 is delayed yet again then Apple had better fix whatever is wrong. Companies succeed by producing excellent products on time not fomenting rumors and speculation. If Apple cannot meet expectations, it will suffer ridicule and possible worse. Apple has an obligation to be honest and forthright with its investors and customers and itself
“The problem Apple is running into is that it’s a relatively small company compared with tech giants such as Hewlett-Packard and IBM,….”
So if that’s the reason what is Micro$oft’s excuse for Vista’s original release promise of 2003?
I’m not sure the delay in 10.5 matters, Tiger is so good that it competes admirably with Vista, i’m still using 10.3 and have no plans to upgrade.
@ Big Al
“Apple does get other companies to make their hardware. Apple does not make any of their computers”
That’s not what I was referring to and you either know that or you’re simply thick…
“Their hardware does not sell for twice what comparable Dells sell for. Comparable Dells sell for about the same price.”
BULLSHIT! $600 or $700 for a Mini??? Yeah that will buy you a $400 Dell with more features (not to mention a computer that can be upgraded and is complete)
“You really have no idea what you are talking about. Ripped DVD’s look great on TV. Can you say MediaFork?”
No, and I don’t want to say “Mindfork” or spend my time ripping DVD’s. Steve spent quite a lot of time both at the iTV preview and MacWorld telling people the solution was IMS. It’s garbage…
“<b><i>”If you are such an OS X fanatic you would know that OS X 10.4.9 is a great OS and Leopard is not really needed just yet. You would know the Leopard delay is no big problem.
I was thinking the same thing. My 1st car was a 1966 Mustang. It was a great car. I have no idea why Ford keep designing new ones every year. I new design was really not needed…
“You would also know that if you really wanted to get OS X working on your wonderful cheap-ass Dell, you could. Do a Google search. Lots of geeks have OS X working on generic Intel and AMD iron.”
Don’t have to, I have one sitting right here. And It is running 10.4.8 not 10.4.9 (not sure if the OSX86 project has a patched version of 10.4.9 yet).. The performance blows my mini away (although the hardware was cheaper) and I can actually install RAM myself in about 10 mins and can, if I desire change the video card.
I have a feeling that you’re not that much of an OS X fanatic.
I have a feeling you’re a kid or at the very least a true “mindless fanboy” full of excuses.
I think you’re a blathering idiot. Here’s an idea. Why don’t you simply change your name to “Mindless.”
Feel free to flame away. But keep in mind before you do: F*CK OFF!
Yes, this is about what I expected from you “mindless Fanboys”.. Insults, rants, and mindless drolling over everything Apple creates.
I’M WITH YOU GUYS!!!!… I don’t care if 10.5 is delayed for another 2 years. We have 10.4 and it’s already years ahead of everything else. WOOOO HOOOOO
See ya later Moron.. WOOOOO Steve!!!!!!
BULLSHIT! $600 or $700 for a Mini??? Yeah that will buy you a $400 Dell with more features (not to mention a computer that can be upgraded and is complete)
Great, thence since sticker price is your main parameter what are you wasting time and money with Apple? Go ahead, get yourself a $400 Dell with more feature, upgradeable and complete.
I mean, what are you? A complete frigging idiot? It is very much self evident you’ll fare much better with a Dell. What keeps you here. Stop wasting time with Apple, please. Do yourself a favor.
I am pretty tired of all who complain about price: “I can get a Dell for $800 while a MacBook will cost me at least $1000”
FINE, stop bitching, get your Dell and fsck off. What are you again, an idiot or what? If price is your main parameter then shut the fsck up and get the cheapest hardware available.
Fscking tired of these bitching about price. YOU ALL OUT THERE, YOU ARE RIGHT: GET YOUR CHEAPO DELL AND SHUT THE FUCK UP.
Enough already! Just one thing though: STICK WITH YOUR DELL!
hit you when leaving.
Mindless, get your $400 Dell, install Vista and then come back relating your WOWs experiences with that.
Yes, this is about what I expected from you “mindless Fanboys”.. Insults, rants,
Yeah, and what did we get from you but rants so far?
Do you have a pistol at your head so that you are forced to buy from Apple? Is that what buggers you?
You do think they are overpriced FOR YOU? Fine. Who cares? It is YOUR wallet. Too pricey? Buy Dell, stop ranting here.
FRANKLY, I agree with previous poster above: enough this comparing crap with quality and complain quality price vs crap. What is happening with Dell today under investigation is as well revealing about what really might happen around *prices* from Dell. Apparently too good to be true!
To all lurking trolls: don’t you realize how ridicule is your “I am not going to pay Apple tax on their hardware”. Fantastic, stop wasting your and our times. This is not a place you will have any followers on those arguments. At times – and I stress: AT TIMES – Apple might be more expensive (few point %) than another brand but in terms of TCO it wins hand down.
Nor I do feel I need to complain a Mac Mini at $499 should actually cost $399 or whatever. You believe so? Good, don’t buy a Mac Mini.
Really, who gives a fuck – and I am polite – if you think any Apple model costs too much FOR YOU.
For me a $400 Dell is way too costly. It could be interesting at $100 but then I would be forced have Windows on it. Not every reseller would give me a Dell at $100 with Linux on it, thence a $400 Dell with pre-loaded Windows is FUCKING EXPENSIVE! Then again, fucking expensive FOR ME, you, it is clear for you to be a good price, so go and get that piece of turd Dell and be happy. You know it is good for you, you deserve it, you need Windows, all blah blah GET A DELL and shut up.
Are we finally done with this price idiocy already?
“Statistics on the Web (for what they are worth) show Vista even trailing Windows ME and less than half Mac OS X percentage.
Vista is more than a failure: it is a total disaster.”
” The only reliable numbers are 20 millions copies SHIPPED.
NOT sold. Capish?”
Wow Microsoft’s only SHIPPED the equivalent of the ENTIRE Mac installed base in a MONTH and it might take another MONTH for those to sell through, and another MONTH for the stats to show that Vista exceeds Mac OS X for web site hits, by which time, another 10+ MILLION copies per month will be SHIPPED.
You just don’t understand the relative scale of the PC industry. Vista has already eclipsed Mac OS X in terms of installed base. You just haven’t seen this month’s numbers yet. It’s no wonder that Apple is concentrating it’s efforts in an arena it might be able to compete in.
If Leopard SHIPS 20 million copies in it’s first month, I’ll take my hat off to Apple.
The trend should be clear to you now, Mac OS X 10.6 (Lion, king of the OS X beasts) is Vista, then Apple can stop wasting resources on creating programs for both Windows and Mac OS X and concentrate on the gadget business, 98% of which will be hooked to Windows PCs anyway.
The switch to Intel and PC standard hardware is the way to give everyone an easy route out of OS X when that happens. Boot camp allows you to get familiar with your new OS now and start the transition.
Windows = Windows = Windows. It doesn’t mater which version they send out– it’s the business model that gives them the type of penetration you describe. OS X doesn’t sell to just anyone– things would be considerably different if it did, but ultimately not as good for Apple. It’s comparing two different models entirely.
In addition, Apple is not finished growing. Perhaps we should remember and reevaluate your statement in 2008 and after?
Think it through:
100,000,000 iPods sold.
There is a base of 20 million Mac owners out there. Not everyone has purchased an iPod. Let´s say 25% of Mac owners bought an iPod.
That´s 5 million.
Mac owners make up 5% of total iPod sales.
The other 95 million are purchased by Windows computer owners.
So who is Apple´s customer for the gadgets; i.e. iPods, iPhones? The Windows computer owner.
If Apple had to rely on Mac owners for sales of gadgets….forget it. Small potatoes.
Who is the iPhone aimed at? Windows computer owners.
Now surely the iPhone will interact with one´s computer. Which computer OS is Apple concerned with the iPhone working with? It´s Number 1 customers: Windows computer owners.
Now doing some further thinking – The iPhone will have OSX on it and it has to work with/on a Windows computer…..hmmmm…now we know what Bootcamp is for and where it is headed…
Comments? Thoughts?
“It’s comparing two different models entirely.”
Different models, same market, Apple’s lost already.
Which comes back to why Apple’s decided to downprioritize OS X, a market where they can’t win, for iPhone, a market where they could carve out some reasonable share.
“Perhaps we should remember and reevaluate your statement in 2008 and after?”
Perhaps, but Apple will struggle to get even a few more points worldwide share with it’s current strategy. That’ll keep it being a smaller player than a brand like Asus, the company it buys it’s laptops from. Forget coming even close to the same share as HP or Dell have today, It’s not going to happen.
“Now doing some further thinking – The iPhone will have OSX on it and it has to work with/on a Windows computer…..hmmmm…now we know what Bootcamp is for and where it is headed…”
Mac OS X on Desktops/Laptops has at best a few more years before it goes quietly into the night and Apple completes it’s transition to a WinTel PC/Consumer gadget company.
Define “lost,” please. Profitability ≠ lost. It’s individuals that want Apple to take over the Windows world, but it’s not Apple’s. They’re bigger than ever and will continue to grow healthily, winning over many converts along the way. You can’t “lose” a race you’re not participating in. What’s with the marketshare argument again– macs are not cash registers, atm machines, or cheapy web kiosks. Apple has never raced for the bottom by commoditizing its products.
People are wising up to wanting quality in the computing. A few years ago, no one knew better because EVERYTHING was new and exciting, even if it gave you an ulcer to troubleshoot or configure. Now, people want their stuff to work (see iPod).
2008, sir.
A painfully pathetic putrid philistine has poached my moniker. Please to not associate this maniacal moron’s misanthropic missives with my messages.
Mindless Fanboy rocks!
Of course it’s spreading itself too thin. Sony has 100 times the products, yet Apple can’t meet its deadlines. Make no mistake; Apple Inc. is NOT Apple Computer. Macs are low priority and have been for a while. It’s all about the iPod and iPhone now. That’s what Jobs sees as Apple’s future. The Mac will continue to be relegated to third-class citizen. Apple is evolving away from the Mac. That explains why they are so indifferent to their Mac-related delay F-UPS. There is no sense of urgency, no apologies, and no signs of changing. Hell, they can’t even add a spreadsheet to the anemic and embarassing iWork product that features 2 friggin modules, one of which no one uses. Apple is becoming less and less familiar. That’s my take.
“Hey, I know. Let’s put tons of R&D money into an even better version of OS X, and then we’ll . . . SWITCH TO WINDOWS!
“No, wait. Even better. Let’s spend 2 1/2 years developing a new handheld computing platform (that also happens to be a phone) based on OS X, and then . . . SWITCH TO WINDOWS! Brilliant!”
———–
What a bunch of asshats, you people.
I’ve got three words for you, and I know they’ll be difficult to take, but here they are: Apple Is Successful,
I know. It’s like that whole The World Is Round thing back in the day. But, take a deep breath and just, well . . . just let it be. Yeah. That’s right. Apple is successful. And though they’re tiny by comparison to that other OS vendor, they’re the hottest ticket in the biz today. Hit after hit. Tons of cash. Tons of press. Shaking it up.
Beat that “market share” drum all you want. Apple has proven that it just doesn’t matter any more.
It’s true. The world is round.
“Apple is becoming less and less familiar. “
You mean they’re *GASP* . . . EVOLVING?
God forbid! How will they ever be the beleaguered Apple we all know and love if they grow and change and set new standards and introduce new platforms and . . . I just can’t bear to think of it!
iMaki, Apple is not evolving away from the Mac. The Mac is evolving. It’s next incarnation will be in your hand rather than on your desk.
Justified,
No one wants a handheld Mac. The Palm devices and Smart Phones prove small doesn’t cut it. We all will have the same eyes, I suspect, we are born with when we die. We need a large screen device. So your point than the Mac is evolving into something tiny is, well, naive.
iMaki,
Do you really believe that the desktop Mac will go away?
“The Mac is evolving” makes a bit broader suggestion than I believe you’re capable of understanding. But, that’s OK. Apple will continue to make desktops and notebooks, and you’ll always have your computer and all will be fine.
You must be exhausted living with yourself. If a person has a less than desirable experience with AppleTV the reason may be incorrect settings for his/her monitor or it could be that a person has an AppleTV dud or some other problem unrelated to proper configuration.
It is obvious that you have jumped to one conclusion without adequately thinking about and eliminating other problems than may also be present. This would make you a retard among retards. Are you feeling anemic, moron? Obviously, your capacity for thinking is weak.
Besides, if you are such a whiz at diagnosing problems from a distance using your sixth sense then use you fantastic powers and provide a solution. Oh, that’s right, you haven’t a clue because you’re a moron and not just a moron but a retard among morons!
As a business owner you always walk a fine line between “lean” and “efficient”, and plain ol’ “shorthanded”. Apple has crossed that line obviously, but adding more people at this time can be counter-productive. It takes huge resources of time to bring new employees into the workforce. Apple probably is doing this in a measured fashion, but they also probably consider this a tough stretch with some relief after June’s iPhone intro. Apple doesn’t want to be saddled with the inevitable bloat as the developmental process slows down. That’s MS now.
“Let’s spend 2 1/2 years developing a new handheld computing platform (that also happens to be a phone) based on OS X, and then . . . SWITCH TO WINDOWS!”
Strangely those two are not incompatible goals, realize that the desktop battle is lost, down prioritize the last version of Mac OS X for desktops/laptops but take the OS in another direction for mobile devices.
You just don’t understand the relative scale of the PC industry.
It must sux to be so frigging stupid in Windows world.
Hey idiot, Windows XP in the first month SHIPPED over 40 millions copies and sold over 17 millions.
Vista SHIPPED 20 million copies SO FAR and no one dares to say how many have been sold.
One must be truly and idiot not to see the disaster Vista currently is.
Boot camp allows you to get familiar with your new OS now and start the transition.
Turd, you got it backward. Bootcamp is used so people used to suck Bill’s shaft can feel reassured when buying a Mac they can still suck at their beloved shaft.
Thence, comparing with OS X they see how much they sucked till now and stop more and more using Windows. Which rock do you still live under?
HAHHUHHAHAHHOAHHAUHAHAHHA
What a tool. You get a double award: IDIOT and TROLL of the month.
What a lobster. With that statement you just painted all over yourself with Zune shit brown.
WOHHHHOSHHHHHH
You just disappeared in the sewage.
Man, are you a clown or truly that moron?
Huh?
you are delusional. Vista is going to be the last OS from Microsoft. The company is dead. Their best developers leave for Google, Yahoo and Apple. Vista is a shamble.
It is quite something that the only things of value now from Microsoft is on the hardware side: mice and keyboards. The rest quite frankly is a bloated spaghetti code full of flaws and shortcuts less and less interesting to the real world.
IT is facing for the first time with the question what to use beyond Windows. And more and more IT departments are preparing for the shift.
You must be stuck with your first person shooter and Windows XP not to realize that.
Go back to your playground and keep sleeping: the awakening will be shocking.
Vista is the end of it.
Mac OS X on Desktops/Laptops has at best a few more years before it goes quietly into the night and Apple completes it’s transition to a WinTel PC/Consumer gadget company.
That’s the most hilarious statement ever written on MDN.
This guy is a genius, much like Groucho Marx
HOHAHHAHAHAHUHHUHAUHAHAHAHUHHAUHAHAHAHAHAHHAHUHHUH
Thanks, you put tears in my eyes.
Now, seriously, I can have you short some AAPL’s in my bank, no fee. Why don’t you short some 1000 AAPL with us?
“One must be truly and idiot not to see the disaster Vista currently is.”
If Vista’s a disaster with it’s sales numbers, Mac OS X is a disaster on the scale of the sun exploding.
Sorry if you can’t live with the fact that Vista already has a greater installed base than your beloved Mac OS X and have to hold on to the delusion that it’s a failure to stop your little world crumbling.
“Vista SHIPPED 20 million copies SO FAR”
Actually that was 20 million copies in month 1 and the XP number you quote was for almost three months, buit don’t let facts invaide your world. Anyway aren’t you a little bit impressed by a company that can exceed Apple’s installed base built up over 20 years in just one month? It indicates the difference in scale between the two companies.
“Vista is the end of it.”
Indeed it is, the end of OS X. Apple is migrating and repositioning itself to be a company which sells Windows PCs, software and peripherals which work with them.
“only things of value now from Microsoft is on the hardware side: mice and keyboards.”
Seriously? You’d rather have Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard business than their OS business? Well the world needs stupid people like you too I guess. Someone has to flip burgers.
“Bootcamp is used so people used to suck Bill’s shaft can feel reassured when buying a Mac”
So you suck some one’s dick whenever you use Boot Camp. Why do you feel you need to do that?
“I can have you short some AAPL’s in my bank, no fee.”
Thanks, Sell 846.4 million shares short for me. I understand that I will incur no costs whatsoever for this transaction. I’ll let you know when I want to close that position out and where to sent the money. I’m thinking that’s probably in day or to if you can sell the whole float short.
Sorry if you can’t live with the fact that Vista already has a greater installed base than your beloved Mac OS X and have to hold on to the delusion that it’s a failure to stop your little world crumbling.
Get yourself informed Huh?. Vista has smaller presence than even Windows ME at the moment and about 50% of Mac OS X on latest data.
Of course it will be more than OS X in due time, idiots do not know how to buy a new PC with anything but Vista pre-installed. So Vista will be forced down their throats but during the same period of time Windows XP just dwarfed Vista sales already. So your point is?
The rest of your points are so idiotic is it not even worth discussing it.
And it seems you have problem grasping even language. No one is talking about business, but products. Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard are actually good. The rest is mediocre. And in terms of business, again, get informed. Microsoft loses money EVERYWHERE but on sales of Office and licenses of Windows to corporations.
Impressed by the market of Windows? Are you serious? Windows sells and counts as sales to every cash register, every atm machine, every terminal in airports, ports, bus stations and alike.
It is like asking Maserati and Ferrari if they are ashamed of Renault sales who get into utilitaries, trucks, golf carts, train wagons and alike. Not only that, but asking that question to a Maserati and Ferrari who have seen in the last years their sales growing by 40%, 50% and even 60% in some sectors.
Apple does not *work* in all sectors nor wishes to. Indeed, Windows has won the battle to be the OS of dumb terminals, showing airports schedules and cashing money out of dumb users as well, as it seems from your understanding of what is happening right now.
LOL, it is actually nice to see that total blindness on people like you, ROFLMAO, “Vista is the end of Mac OS X”
AHHUHHAHHUHHAHHHAHAHAHAH
You are so funny. By the way, since you are also showing business wisdom with shorting AAPL massively, could I offer you a nice property in the middle of Rome? very ancient, full of windows and open spaces, great view. Also very well served by all public lines. I could add an ancient fountain as well. Send enquiries to info@municipio.roma.it
It seems obvious that Huh? is just trolling here. No value whatsoever in his posts. Just pure trolling: is not that clear by now?
Stop waist bandwidth and stop feeding the troll.
Actually that was 20 million copies in month 1
Wrong, that was 20 millions counting as well Vista release to businesses. Pretty clear it is a disastrous result, especially counting the more than $500 Millions spent in adverts! Lame results.
Ok, he is a troll but he is funny too:
aren’t you a little bit impressed by a company that can exceed Apple’s installed base built up over 20 years in just one month?
ROFLMAO, so indeed you do not understand the difference between SHIPPED and SOLD in Windows figures.
AHAHHEHHAHAHAHAHA
20 Millions Vista copies shipped to manufacturers and shops means that these business as well judged Vista poorly: they ordered less that 50% of the order level at the times of XP.
Microsoft could ship 200 million copies in one week if they like, gathering dust in unsold boxes and unsold PCs. Who cares?
Again, as posted over and over again but you fail to grasp: Vista installed base is smaller than Windows ME.
It will grow, rest assured little troll, but that does not hide the fact that Vista is a huge flop for Microsoft.
BTW, since you do not understand the difference between shipped and sold, how old are you, really?
twelve? thirteen?
what is your nickname in Quake? or Unreal Tournament?
“Get yourself informed Huh?. Vista has smaller presence than even Windows ME at the moment and about 50% of Mac OS X on latest data.”
“Latest Data” you have is stale by about a month as those stats report a month in arrears.
But even given your numbers, What you’re saying is that Vista is already at 50% of Mac OS X’s installed base, and therefore at least 10 million copies are in the hands of consumers so it’ll take TWO months not ONE to roll over Mac OS X? Wow, what a failure. That’s a disaster of epic proportions.
“Pretty clear it is a disastrous result, especially counting the more than $500 Millions spent in adverts”
Sure, for 20 million copies you need an average wholesale price of $25 to cover 500 million in ad expenditure, assuming the value of that ad campaign is amortized over one single month.
“It is like asking Maserati and Ferrari if they are ashamed of Renault sales “
Ferraris actually have features which differentiate themselves from other cars. The Mac is like a kit car Ferrari built on a Chevy corvette chassis, it performs the same as the Chevy, is the same as the Chevy underneath just has a different skin on top.
“since you are also showing business wisdom with shorting AAPL massively, “
I’m smart enough to know that if you sell that much AAPL the price WILL go down. I’m glad you’re giving me that opportunity at no personal cost.
“ROFLMAO, so indeed you do not understand the difference between SHIPPED and SOLD in Windows figures.”
I understand that difference very well between the number Microsoft has sold into the channel and the sell through of those units. But you seem to think that when MS ships Windows there’s some big hole they disappear into never to re-appear. Wait a month (And that month has already happened), most of those shipped Vistas will be in the hands of customers. See what the Vista percentage of web usage is in this month’s figures when they’re released.
you’re clearly completely financially illiterate, except perhaps knowing how much extra you charge customers when they up-size their meal.
“won the battle to be the OS of dumb terminals, showing airports schedules and cashing money “
It’s also won on corporate desktops and for home PC users. Lets be clearer. There’s no segment of the PC market where Mac OS X outsells Windows.
There’s no segment of the PC market where Mac OS X outsells Windows.
Oh yes, Windows is absolutely outsold in graphics and now even in science and research where Apple growth is over 50% since a couple years. Windows is present in administrative tasks but on those hands you see Linux and Mac OS X. Windows is nowhere to be seen as a working tool.
Harward IIC? They are at 95% Macs. From their director’s own words “If you go around here one would say we are sponsored by Apple”
MDN magic word “truth”. How appropriate.
Indeed it is. The above result was expected within weeks of Vista launch by analysts. Results were so abysmal instead that forced Balmer to warn that expectations were exaggerated my far.
So indeed a real disaster. If you expect 100 and get 10 it does not matter whether 10 is as large as closest competitors: you failed big time.
See what the Vista percentage of web usage is in this month’s figures when they’re released.
For your info they are actually out already. Vista has finally reached now same presence as Windows ME.
Still 2% below Mac OS X.
Again, a flop!
Not only that, the % of people deciding to stay with Windows XP rather than Vista has actually RAISED with more awareness of Vista rather then declining. The more you know about Vista the more you decide to stay away from it.
For the record, for the first time, presence of Windows XP decreased to below 80%. XP is now counting at 79%

Microsoft deafening silence about sales performance of Vista is per se SCREAMING.
But you are a Windoze fanboy, you will never see it. Vista is perfect, the ultimate tip of performance and security. it fits you perfectly fanboy.
Just to be clearer
March % is now Vista and Windows ME 3%
Mac OS X 5%
So it got a bit more than 50% now. Shall we wait now for a THIRD month instead, lobster?
Or will you be more confortable with a fourth?
I know Microsoft representative, for your info, and THEY are speechless and easy to be taunted now.
They have little to say to cover their ass which is quite funny indeed to see they scramble for excuses.
The intelligent ones just raise shoulders.
Maybe you should be hired now by Microsoft PR, you make for a funnier MS clown.
HUAHUAHAUHHUHAHHUHHUAHUHAHHAHAUHUAHHA
So it took Vista TWO FULL MONTH to equate crappy Windows ME?
Ahhh, a marriage in crappy land.
HOHUHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAH
Only a Windoze blind apologist could still defend that as good performance.
Who knows, maybe in April that 20% of still undecided users will finally see the crap Vista is and over 80% of XP users will have taken the decision to not DEGRADE to Vista.
Who knows, April could see Vista % reach EVEN Windows 98 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“And I don’t know why [Apple is] acting like it’s superior. I don’t even get it. What are they trying to say?” — Bill Gates on the Mac ads
Bill, you truly need a trip into outer space. You anyway lost contact with mother Earth already.
numbers and lies….
Numbers in statistics are way variable. Depends on source and methods but we all know that.
Triggered by the above posts I actually have found for April % the following:
Windows XP 83.57%
Mac OS 6.08%
Windows 2000 4.71%
Windows Vista 2.04%
Other Windows 1.86%
Still, the trend will make Ballmer go through his entire stock of chairs: in April Windows Vista has declined (if we believe it was half% of Mac presence before) to roughly a 1/3 of Mac OS from 1/2 of it in March? Nice performance indeed
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” />
And it seems Vista went past Windows ME for sure. WHOOOTT
to profit our lurking Windoze fanboys, the above statistics give Vista trailing by 4 % points, not 2. So it got worst with respect to March.
Nothing to be surprised though seeing computer market growing by single % digit and Apple growing by more than 50%.
to our Windoze fanatics.
Since Windows 2000 is 4.71%, for all that you have said about % as measure of quality and worthiness, shall we say Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows ME (but we know about that already) are worst than crap since Mac OS X at 6.08% in at your eyes a puny little crappy OS with such a small percentage?
Windows NT is probably the only reasonably good OS that Microsoft produced and still such a little % is not even in the charts, combined most probably with the above “Other Windows”.
Is that a sign Windows users cannot understand quality over crap? Must be it.
OH wait, I know it. Windows NT does not have GAMES !!!!!!!!!!! Thence not a serious computer OS.
I got it, forgot the idiocy factor in Windoze fanboys.
“So it got a bit more than 50% now. Shall we wait now for a THIRD month instead, lobster?”
So by your numbers it’s going to take 3 months to totally eclipse the Mac OS X installed base that it took Apple most of this decade to build and you still think that’s GOOD for Apple and a BAD performance by Microsoft? By other people’s numbers it’s already happened.
Those 20 million copies in one month represent about 3-4 years of Mac sales at today’s rates, and you still think the Mac is a winner in this comparison?
Do you find it comforting that Mac OS X is hovering about the same numbers as Windows 2000? By your reasoning, that must mean customer perceptions of Mac OS X and Windows 2000 are about the same.
“Oh yes, Windows is absolutely outsold in graphics and now even in science and research where Apple growth is over 50% since a couple years”
Once upon a time in graphics yes, but not any more. And with respect to science and research, Apple making gains on it’s pathetic base is not the same as Apple outselling Windows, or even exceeding Windows’s gains in absolute terms in those same markets.
“Triggered by the above posts I actually have found for April % the following:”
Wow, you have April’s numbers already? I was expecting to have to wait a few weeks for those, like until the end of April…
So by your numbers it’s going to take 3 months to totally eclipse the Mac OS X installed base that it took Apple most of this decade to build and you still think that’s GOOD for Apple and a BAD performance by Microsoft? By other people’s numbers it’s already happened.
Your are really THICK are you? It is not me, it is finance world that says it is bad, it is PC devoted magazines who says that, it is Windows users with a brain (granted, not fanboys like you) and finally it is even Microsoft itself that the only thing they are capable to do is being apologetic.
Listen around you Huh? the whole world is LAUGHING.
Those 20 million copies in one month represent about 3-4 years of Mac sales at today’s rates, and you still think the Mac is a winner in this comparison?
How thick can you be. So you only see absolute numbers? Apple is growing at 50% ~ 60% quarter after quarter, Microsoft is stagnating and you see that as good for MS and bad for Apple? You are becoming stale and boring. Thick as a brick.
Once upon a time in graphics yes, but not any more.
LOL – “Apple has done it again—they’ve taken media asset management, simplified it and made it affordable, and most importantly, it works right out of the box,” — Jeffrey Birch, vice president, Engineering, CBS Television Stations.
Apple making gains on it’s pathetic base is not the same as Apple outselling Windows, or even exceeding Windows’s gains in absolute terms in those same markets.
ROFLMAO, oh yes, in % and absolute numbers too in some cases. From under which rock are you writing?
like until the end of April…
Never heard of “running statistics” ? The date provided above are collected up and generated on April 14th. A trend is a trend is a trend.
You are trooooolly that thick, are you?
Those 20 million copies in one month represent about 3-4 years of Mac sales at today’s rate
Still confounding SHIPPED copies vs SOLD ?
Not even Microsoft speaks about SOLD. They just repord SHIPPED copies to retailers and PC manufacturers. At present rate to SELL 20 millions copy they probably need to flood the planet with boxes. Granted, there are certainly more than 20 millions turds in the world: look, I am exchanging posts with one right now in this thread. Imagine how common they are.
You sound like Bagdad’s communication spokeperson “Look, I can’t see US tanks anywhere, can you?” “Those blasts sound? We are repaving”.
Again, not even Microsoft is able to do anything but being apologetic, and in a pitiful way: enough to watch the way Bill Gates himself has been ridiculed in all major networks
“Look, he IS LEAVING, Hey Bill, not even a good bye? PEOPLE, HE IS LEAVING!!!!!!!!!”
When the world starts to laugh you know you have been a flop.
Apple making gains on it’s pathetic base
Ok, so over 20 millions user base is pathetic. I wonder what is the Vista results since they are less than 20 millions.
Ah yes, for you it is GOOD!
AHHEUHAHAHAHHHHHAEHAHAOHAHAHUHAHUAHAH
Those 20 million copies in one month
in one month? It is 20 millions SINCE RELEASE, and that’s include release to corporate. It is way more than ONE month.
Oh, by the way, there is no need to ship more copies: shops and retailers have already more than they need. Vista is the Zune of the operating systems.
“Do you intend to switch or upgrade your primary home computer to Windows Vista operating system in the next 12 months?”
“No, I’ll stay with my current operating system”
December 06 – 31%
March 07 – 67%
Indeed, good performance Vista is having. Exactly like Zune.
What next successful product there will be from MS? Zusta? Vistune?
“Still confounding SHIPPED copies vs SOLD ?”
All Apple’s numbers for iPods and PCS are done on the same basis, units which have left Apple’s control, and can be booked as a sale by them.
I’m very clearly aware of the difference between Microsoft selling a product to a distributor/OEM and that copy being sold to a customer. Channel stuffing as a way to show an increase in sales at best works only in the short term.
Those 20 million units will sell through. Most have already.
The point remains that even by your most pessimistic estimates, Microsoft will have a greater installed base of Vista than Apple has of all OS X versions within a month or two.
And we’re not talking about exceeding OS X’s sales. Clearly you understand that many more copies of Vista are sold per month than copies of OS X. We’re talking about a much more impressive feat, totally exceeding Apple’s entire installed base of OS X machines, which took 6 years for them to build.
“Do you intend to switch or upgrade your primary home computer to Windows Vista operating system in the next 12 months?”
Few can be bothered to upgrade, but that just reflects how satisfied people are that XP meets their needs. Ask the question, when you buy a new computer will it run Vista or Windows XP, you’ll find that most people buying a new PC for home use or small business will be running Vista. Corporate adoption always lags about a year from first release, that shouldn’t surprise anyone.
And as to OS X, it gets delayed 4 months, and the overwhelming response from people on this board and analysts is that they really don’t care, that it’s a good thing and that Tiger is already good enough. How do you think Leopard upgrades will sell?
“Microsoft is stagnating “
When you have 95% share, just how much further do you think you can grow your OS market share? If by “Stagnating” you mean Owns The Market So Completely That They Have Nowhere to Grow in Terms of Share (as opposed to unit sales which go up as the whole market grows). Fine, I’d have to agree with that.
All Apple’s numbers for iPods and PCS are done on the same basis, units which have left Apple’s control, and can be booked as a sale by them.
Wrong. Apple distinguishes between shipped and sold. The 100 million units iPods are actually units having registered a sale. That is not shipment. You can’t put those numbers on financial reports as revenue and profit till final sale. 100 millions iPods actually sold.
The point remains that even by your most pessimistic estimates, Microsoft will have a greater installed base of Vista than Apple has of all OS X versions within a month or two.
Nope, the point is that you consider that as good performance while everyone, included Microsoft (lame attempts to hide that, called by everyone and their dog), point at that as bad results.
If Vista was any good it would have actually SOLD 20 Millions units in a couple weeks. The market at the time of XP release was WAY smaller than today and still XP sold 17 million units within the first month. Again: Vista is a flop.
Microsoft will have a greater installed base of Vista than Apple has of all OS X versions within a month or two.
Within a month or two or three or four after the already elapsed months. Again, a flop: a company that pretends to have 95% market (buy you clearly confound quarter sales with installed base) if it had a successful OS, convincing, a die-for upgrade, would have sold in TODAY’s market 20 millions copies in the first two weeks. The fact that it needs to wait for people buying a new PC to have Vista forced down their throats in order to score a sale, again, marks it as a flop.
Few can be bothered to upgrade, but that just reflects how satisfied people are that XP meets their needs.
Wrong again. This just reflects how bad Vista is, how it brings nothing but eye-candy to XP, how it actually degrades the experience for the user. You are delusional to think that if Vista was truly the WOW experience Microsoft tried in vane to spin for months people would have refrained from upgrading or buying it. They would have rushed. They don’t because Vista practically sucks, brings practically nothing compelling over XP, it simply is a YAWN rather than a WOW.
The only WOW Vista generated is from people coming with “WOW, it took Microsoft all those years to come out with THIS? BLEAHHH”. Again, a flop.
And as to OS X, it gets delayed 4 months, and the overwhelming response from people on this board and analysts is that they really don’t care, that it’s a good thing and that Tiger is already good enough. How do you think Leopard upgrades will sell?
And you seriously doubt it? With hundreds of people waiting days before every single Apple Store and flocking for the LEOPARD FRIDAY event.
Microsoft is stagnating from the point of view of its stocks value. It is frozen. Concerning market share, open your eyes: it is not stagnating, it is actually declining in %. Mac OS X goes from 1.2 to over 6%. Linux gained as well few % points, there is practically no other major OS in town where do you thing those added % points come from? Mars?
Microsoft is not growing at all, at best it is growing slower than the market, thence its % presence is actually declining. 95% only in your dream fanboy.
Channel stuffing as a way to show an increase in sales at best works only in the short term.
And Vista is thence caught pants down. Why do you think Microsoft is not coming out with ACTUAL sales? Because revealing how many of those 20 million channel stuffing have been actually sold would be a shame.
Vista, again, a flop. It is Microsoft worst nightmare. Suddenly they realize 2007 is not 1997.
MacDailyNews Take: “You can’t shift paradigms without pushing the envelope beyond the limit.”
Uh, wouldn’t a different, new paradigm take you outside the envelope of the original, old paradigm?
All the iPhone hype is like the WMDs – we’ll see what, if anything, ever turns up.
“The 100 million units iPods are actually units having registered a sale”
A sale from Apple’s perspective, not from the retailer’s.
“You can’t put those numbers on financial reports as revenue and profit till final sale. “
Absolutely you can, if You’ve SOLD them to whoever buys them from you. Don’t speak about things you know nothing about, like accounting.
” With hundreds of people waiting days before every single Apple Store and flocking for the LEOPARD FRIDAY event. “
Wow, hundreds of sales on day 1 (say 200/store) at about 170 stores, that’s 34 thousand copies. Even if Apple got those lines every day for the first 30 days with 200 upgraders/day/store (which we know does not happen) that’s barely a million copies. Well on the way towards 20 million. not.
“revealing how many of those 20 million channel stuffing have”
You can’t even use channel stuffing properly in a sentence. Stop talking about things you know nothing about.
Absolutely you can, if You’ve SOLD them to whoever buys them from you. Don’t speak about things you know nothing about, like accounting
Apple sells essentially through its online store and its Apple Stores. Or you didn’t know that?
The *channel*, as in third party reseller are now but a minimal % of all sales.
Wow, hundreds of sales on day 1
ROFLMAO, I knew it you would have felt into it. HHHAHAHAHHAHAHAH
Haven’t read the news about the opening of the new Apple Store in Alabama? No new product, no new OS, thousands and thousands gathering *just* because a store opens.
What about getting a chessboard, then you get a pea on square one, two peas on square two, then 4 on square 3, etc till you get to the 64th square. Tell me how many simpleton.
I am talking about hundreds of people *starting* to CAMP outside the Apple Stores, each day for days and days till the released day. But you got it actually as what you think impossible is actually what will probably happen: a million copy of Leopard in matter of days. Making the distinguo Vista should have SOLD 30 millions copies in matter of day to be comparable.
Stop talking about things you know nothing about.
HAHAHHOAHEHAHHOHEHAHHAHAOHEHAHHAHA
You have no more arguments I see. Glad to see that in your recent posts you clearly toned down a lot. Take care troll: game over.
“Apple sells essentially through its online store and its Apple Stores. Or you didn’t know that?”
Those thousands of other iPod retailers must just be an illusion.
The point remains that a manufacturer can book a sale once the product leaves it’s hands and isn’t coming back. In the case of Apple it can’t book a sale for products sitting in stock at it’s own stores, but it can book the revenue the minute it ships a pallet of iPods to CostCo or WalMart or Best Buy or any other retailer and it does.
“Making the distinguo Vista should have SOLD 30 millions copies in matter of day to be comparable.”
There’s your error. To be comparable they would need to sell the SAME number of copies in a few days. To accept that Apple and Microsoft are COMPARABLE if one sells a million copies and the other sells 30 million copies is just a joke.
“Tell me how many simpleton.”
Exponential growth rates seldom last. That’s exactly what the Kings Chessboard problem points out. Will Mac sales grow exponentially this quarter? I doubt it. Have iPod sales grown exponentially last year? No.
What are you smoking buddy: it must be VERY VERY GOOD:
There’s your error. To be comparable they would need to sell the SAME number of copies in a few days. To accept that Apple and Microsoft are COMPARABLE if one sells a million copies and the other sells 30 million copies is just a joke.
WHAAAATTT????
You are amazing man. HAHHAHHUHUHAHHAHAHH. YOU are a joke!
So in your troll mind if Apple sells 1 million copies of OS X in one week, and Microsoft does the same, 1 million copies of Vista in one week for you it is EXACTLY THE SAME? Both successful at the same time? You are making the whole world laughing.
So you come here, bast Apple as puny, little, a joke of 20 millions users, Microsoft is so huge wrt to Apple, the user base of M$ is so big it will obliterate Apple, blah blah blah and now you come comparing Apple and Microsoft in absolute number?
Apple then will be successful with OS X if it sells the same number of Mac OS X as Microsoft will with Vista?
AHHAHHUHAHUHHAHAHHAHEUHHUHUHHUUHHAHHAH
You are definitely a clown.
The truth is Apple is growing at double digit %, sold Tiger well and will sell Leopard even better, Vista is a flop that sells meagerly with the huge market that M$ has (your word: 95%, not true really but your word) and now you say that Apple with a 6% market Q sales and M$ with, say 90%, have to sell the SAME absolute number of their OS to be comparable?
This is huge man. Have you tried to sell the idea to Steve Ballmer? It will be very comical to hear him repeat your take: “What? Vista unsuccessful? We just sold as many Mac OS X copies in 6 month. Vista now has the same Mac OS X installed base.”
It would be HUGE to see this take on newspapers and online blogs.
Nice try troll.
Will Mac sales grow exponentially this quarter? I doubt it. Have iPod sales grown exponentially last year? No.
Exponentially certainly not, but it is almost a year that Apple is selling consistently with a 30%~50% growth on the same quarter YoY. If you do not think that a company going from 1~2% to over 6% in a couple year is not showing phenomenal growth you are delusional: Apple 1Q Y07 alone is almost more than the entire FY05 and it dwarves years before that.
The joke is that if you have 10 times market share than your competitors, when you fare at same level you are a flop.
So yes, Microsoft Vista should sell more units in absolute number proportional to the pretended market share you claim it has: M$ 95%, thence Apple what? A part of that 5% remaining between Mac OS X and Linux?
And this JUST to say we are as successful with our customers as Apple with theirs.
“And this JUST to say we are as successful with our customers as Apple with theirs.”
So you’ve created the ultimate self referential argument. All measures of success should be scaled to the size of the user base?
Therefore if Apple doubles it’s market share, that’s success because they sold to 100% of all people who buy Macs. If the Mac user base halves then they’re still successful because they still sold to 100% people who buy Macs.
If Apple and Microsoft were in a running race and Microsoft’s time was 1/10th of Apple’s, You would declare Apple to be the winner because Microsoft was 12 times faster than them the last time they raced, so Apple’s time should be scaled accordingly?
That’s truly funny that you think that way. Interesting, warped, but still truly funny.
IT is pretty simply but you are too thick to grasp it.
If Apple has 5 customer and creates a product that is bought with passion by their 5 customers they scored a perfect 100% appreciation and huge success.
If Microsoft has 95 customers and creates a product that is bought barely by only 5 customers of their base, yes, it is a huge flop.
Apple sold 5 units, Microsoft sold 5 units. You see Microsoft as successful as Apple, me, the world, Microsoft, Wall Street, everyone else in the planet see Microsoft sucking big time.
I know, that’s truly funny that you may actually think. Interesting, warped, but still truly funny that a troll believes he could think.
You think (argh, what an exaggeration) only in terms of absolute numbers.
So Billions of flies eat shit, only few customers (comparably) eat at gourmet restaurants, THENCE shit is best.
So you eat at McDonalds because they sell billions of hamburgers in the world? THENCE the filet de boeuf cordon bleu at Chez Maxime must be crap. They *only* sell to a bunch of Parisians and idiots from overseas who have money to waste.
I got you. No need to further explain your *gasp* thoughts.
BTW
Microsoft share is declining, and Apple share is climbing. There must be some fly out there who got tired of eating shit. Apple stores records more than 50% of their customers being old Windows users.
Some Windows drone can actually start to think, that’s truly funny that it happens. Interesting, warped, but still truly funny.
If Apple and Microsoft were in a running race and Microsoft’s time was 1/10th of Apple’s, You would declare Apple to be the winner because Microsoft was 12 times faster than them the last time they raced, so Apple’s time should be scaled accordingly?
Apple and Microsoft are not athletes with equal physical capacities, lobster. For your information Microsoft is touted as the 800 pounds gorilla.
If the 800 pounds gorilla is just about able to lift with effort a 10 pounds bar and the little child in the block (you called Apple user base puny and pathetic, remember?) lift with ease 9 pounds bar I declare something is wrong with the gorilla. Seriously wrong.
Ahhh but wait. Nope. What a silly thought. The gorilla lifted 10 pounds so all’s fine with the gorilla: he won!
The fact that it should lift without a blink 500 pounds bar does not even appear on your radar.
Anyway troll, instead of wasting time here why don’t you document yourself a bit? Bring into this pages one single article boasting the success that VIsta clearly is. Hint: you’ll be looking hard.
Again, Microsoft is scrambling hard to justify what happens, a big YAWNNN in IT industry, but our troll of the month declares that on the contrary: they shipped 20 millions copies. Nobody dares to say how many of those are actually sold but hey, 20 millions are 20 millions right?
ROFLMA
Vista is as a flop as it could be
“If the 800 pounds gorilla is just about able to lift with effort a 10 pounds bar and the little child in the block (you called Apple user base puny and pathetic, remember?) lift with ease 9 pounds bar I declare something is wrong with the gorilla. Seriously wrong.”
So Apple is like a Special Olympics competitor of the computer world, They should be celebrated for just giving it a go and doing their best within their limitations?
Quoting from apparently the same source as your numbers:
“The share of PowerPC-based Macs fell, though, from 4.29 percent in February to 3.94 percent in March. That dip was not fully offset by an increase in Intel-based Mac hardware, leading to a overall net decline in Mac share of 0.3 percent, to 6.08 percent in March.”
Meanwhile in the same time, according to those numbers, Vista’s installed base doubled and already exceeds that of all Intel based Macs.
Other sites show Vista usage for this month already at 6%
So which OS is growing and which is not?

‘Apple spreading itself too thin?’
That would be apple butter……
