Apple struggles to meet demand for new LED-backlit MacBook Pro
Wednesday, July 18, 2007 - 03:04 PM EDT

"An ambitious move on the part of Apple Inc. to be amongst the first PC manufacturers to adopt eco-friendly LED backlit displays for its notebook designs is thus far causing the company slightly more grief than good," Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.

"The Cupertino-based Mac maker, which refreshed its MacBook Pro systems with Intel's Santa Rosa-based underpinnings during the first week of June, has yet to catch up with demand for the new LED-lit 15-inch models. In recent weeks, in fact, the firm appears to have fallen further behind," Lane reports.

"The Apple online store, which once estimated delivery of the 15-inch models at 5 to 7 business days, has recently push those ETAs out to 7 to 10 business days," Lane reports.

Macs running off the shelfs... AWESOME!!

Yes, that's either an indicator of crappy production, or high sales levels. I'll hope the latter.

Jul 18, 07 - 03:13 pm Comment from: PM

I ordered my C2D 2.4Ghz SR MBP matte with 160Gb 7200rpm HD on June the friggin 8th. Still has not even shipped yet. My "shipped by July 23rd" date is approaching very soon, and I'm nervous whether or not it will ship by then. I'm losing my patience...it's been well over a month since I ordered it, and there is STILL no activity.

I ordered it through the education discount. Anyone in the same boat as me? :(

Jul 18, 07 - 03:17 pm Comment from: Tell Me About It

I wasted a week calling local Apple Stores daily to check for availability of the 2.2 model. Answer always no, unless I wanted the glossy display. Order online on 13th, with delivery scheduled around the end of the month. Not totally confident Apple will make it.

Bigger question is cause: LED vendor supply issues or the quality control problems some have experienced (kernel panics, yellow screens etc.) Kepping fingers crossed...

I got mine, a 2.4 Ghz! Went straight to the SoHo Apple Store.

Swapped out the HD for a 200GB x 7200 rpm. And put in 4GB RAM.

It's NICE! It just feels smooooth!

I predicted this would happen.

So that's why my wife's new MBP took so long to arrive!

It was delivered yesterday. I'm jealous of all the attention it's getting!

These LED backlit displays aren't ready for primetime. Too many with yellow spots and uneven backlighting. This isn't just an Apple issue either, it goes for all displays with LED backlights. They need to get the kinks out of the manufacturing process for sure.

Mommy, I have to wait a whole week! Booooo Bloody Hooooo & Waawaaah.

Jul 18, 07 - 03:58 pm Comment from: Rick

I ordered the $2499 model and only upgraded to the 7200rpm 160gb drive. It was originally scheduled to arrive on July 25th, but somehow I actually received it over 2 weeks ago...a full month early. It's been awesome!

Feel bad for anyone who's still waiting. : (

@Rick
That explains it, you got PM's!

Jul 18, 07 - 04:24 pm Comment from: ken1w

Gee. Selling as many MacBook Pro's as it can make. That sounds like a bunch of "grief" for sure... Sounds like a good move. Actually, for the typical buyer, I'm not even sure the LED backlighting is even a major consideration.

Jul 18, 07 - 04:41 pm Comment from: Poppycock

Yeah, 7-10 days, that's some real struggle. "More grief than good." Right. How about a little perspective.

Jul 18, 07 - 04:50 pm Comment from: LinuxGuy and Mac Prodigal Son

We waited almost two weeks after getting on the list at the local Apple Store to buy a new 15 inch 2.2 GHz MBP with a matte screen. We could have walked out with the glossy screen, but after comparing the same photographs side by side on each screen type, we stuck with matte.

Jul 18, 07 - 04:54 pm Comment from: The Velvet Hammer

I like my new fancy MacBook Pro -- I think the screen is very even and i've not seen any yellow spots -- and I have this bitch on like 10 hours straight at work.

okay... 8... but still.

Jul 18, 07 - 04:58 pm Comment from: markdo

Bought the 2.4 GHz from the Stanford Palo Alto Apple Store June 5th... There were some weird screen anomalies, and it would not run a vga projector initially. Most problems were fixed with the MBP update... and firmware update... still a few video driver bugs... but overall an absolutely amazing machine !

Jul 18, 07 - 05:09 pm Comment from: One guy from Finland

They just sell more and more and more and faster and faster and faster... Ooohh! And the AAPL will rise!

Jul 18, 07 - 05:34 pm Comment from: Snapper

I ordered my 2.4 7200 160gb June 30. Delivery was supposed to be 10 to 15 days but and update shows delivery as late as the end of the July 31. What the hell !!

Can I cancle a custom order from CDW Canada

Jul 18, 07 - 06:11 pm Comment from: Too Hot!

I really don't know how anyone can conclude anything because shipping is deferred by 2 days. Even worse is coming to the conclusion that this somehow has something to do with the LED displays. Is it really likely that there will be hordes of people clamouring over these displays? If they are, it's because they are Macs, and the 15" MBP is the most popular MBP. I don't know if it is the most sold Mac, but it probably is up there.

If there is a shortage, this may be because of
1- increased demand (most likely reason),
2- inadequate production (least likely reason because Apple must have anticipated increased demand given the trajectory it has been following and the publicity it has garnered of late), or
3- problems related to the middle man (delivery from assemblers in China... These things have to travel half the way around the world, and anything that affects this process can cause delays).

So, unless Apple publishes figures that indicate otherwise, I will assume demand is strong, period.

sorry about the messed up link:

Apple sold 65% more notebooks than it did a year ago

Jul 18, 07 - 08:28 pm Comment from: Waldo

I really think the problem is the lack of availability of 7200 drives. That was what apple told me specifically, and when they first came out the MBPs with 7200 drives were like 5 week waits.

Anyway, I ordered mine on the 6th of july and expect to have it here pretty soon.

I had my right hand amputated in a work accident. Sorry about the late delivery on your laptop.

Jul 18, 07 - 11:55 pm Comment from: makemineamac

My new 15" MBP screen, much like me some might say, is a little flakey. The last update helped a bit, but it's still not consistently"good". It flickers here and there.

Oh well, these screens are 1st gen for Apple. It's still a great notebook.

Yep, sure looks like a white MacBook to me.
It wouldn't be the first time a fugly Windows laptop was replaced by a stylish Mac to try to sell Microsoft's crap.
