Apple takes on Microsoft by releasing Safari Web browser for Windows
Monday, June 11, 2007 - 07:57 PM EST

&

"Apple Inc. will create a version of its Safari Internet browser for Windows, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said on Monday, challenging Microsoft Corp. in its key stronghold of Web access software," Scott Hillis reports for Reuters.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple has created a version of Safari for Windows. The beta can be downloaded here.

"The move by Apple, which has expanded beyond its Macintosh computer core with iPod music players that work with Windows and the upcoming iPhone, could let the company control how the vast majority of people use the Web at a time when services and programs are increasingly becoming Internet-based," Hillis reports.

"Jobs also said Apple would let outside developers create applications to run on its upcoming iPhone by tapping Safari, softening the company's previous position that the device would not support other software due to security concerns," Hillis reports.

"Speaking at Apple's annual developers' conference in San Francisco, Jobs put Microsoft's dominant Internet Explorer browser squarely in his sights, saying that test versions of Apple's Safari software were twice as fast," Hillis reports.

"'We assume Safari for Windows should increase market share and encourage Web site developers to allow for greater compatibility with Safari,' Soleil Equity Research analyst Shannon Cross said," Hillis reports. "'It should also help increase Apple's exposure to the Windows community and potentially attract a larger audience of switchers,' Cross wrote in a research note."

Everybody's learning how
Come on and safari with me

Jun 11, 07 - 07:08 pm Comment from: what if...

what if apple's intention is to partner with google (as a backend) for much of iLife/iWork? it looks like apple is pushing web 2.0 (at least on the phone) for app development. welllll, now that safari is on windows, apple may be pushing for iLife/iWork for windows as well?

Just a thought

Aha - the true strategy is becoming clear - take over by enetering in the back door

Jun 11, 07 - 07:16 pm Comment from: iScott

That is... if they actually download it, which... come on.

The balance of market share reflects the amount various users.

IE - The obviously much higher PC user base
Safari - The growing but still small Mac user base
Firefox - Mac & PC users that actually care and know about their web browser

This basically means that the only PC users that would stop to think about the web browser they're using and why, probably have already switched to Firefox.

The only PC users that will download this are ones that primarily use macs already and developers on PCs that want to test across all browsers.

Sorry able, I've been a dedicated user and fan for a LOOOONNG time, but this is one move I find a bit pointless.

Jun 11, 07 - 07:17 pm Comment from: Steven - Definetly Beta

It's is a rough surf that is for sure. Lots of bugs and not very slow in its current un-optimized code base...

Nice to know this is just Beta and has another 4 months or who knows how long, in time to get up to speed.

Jun 11, 07 - 07:26 pm Comment from: macuser

Safari is 10 times faster
I have just completed the CSS test

http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/csstest.html
( You just have to download and open the file in all the browsers).
After repeating the test several times, here is the average.

( All the tests are done on Windows XP SP2)
IE 6 : 730 ms
Firefox: 680 ms
Safari : 65 ms

Safari is 10 times faster than IE and Firefox on CSS Test.

Cheers!!!

Jun 11, 07 - 07:28 pm Comment from: Willie G

iScott...

Your views are certainly narrow. I have and use Firefox and Safari, and 99% of the time prefer the latter. In fact, in a discussion I just had with our web development team, every single one of them prefer Safari. Firefox is OK, but the hodge-podge of bolt-ons you have to install to have comparable functionality, the extremely S-L-O-W launch times, and the absolutely hideous UI make Firefox an "only when I have to browser"

I do care about my browser quite a bit, and have used them all. My preference is Safari, yours is clearly Firefox. That's cool, choice is a good thing. However, it is irresponsible to make broad-generalizations like that.

Only time will tell.

Jun 11, 07 - 07:29 pm Comment from: paddywack

All this crap talk about market share is baloney. Perception my friends.

A buddy of mine in Iran downloaded it pretty much about the same time I did and he's pretty stoked.

The emotional hit on MS is worth far more than whether Safari will ever replace IE or FireFox.

Jun 11, 07 - 07:30 pm Comment from: Ballmer

Come on, Apple. I dare you to bundle this with every download of iTunes.

Jun 11, 07 - 07:31 pm Comment from: lbuschjr

It's another step in showing people that there's another way to compute than just Windows. Think about it – people get an iPhone and use Safari on iPhone. They ask, "Why can't I have Safari on my desktop?", but they're not ready to switch to the Mac yet. They get Safari, and keep wondering why they put up with Windows, IE, etc. They're one more step toward becoming a Mac user.

Jun 11, 07 - 07:31 pm Comment from: Whoosh!

Downloaded Safari 3 Windows beta and it certainly does fly. Each of my favorite sites was noticeably faster at loading pages under Safari than IE7. And it's still just a beta. Thank you, Apple, for offering Windows users (and those of us Mac fans who have to use Windows) an alternative to the status quo!

Jun 11, 07 - 07:33 pm Comment from: AshNazg

I use Firefox on my MacBook. I like the fact that it has an ad banner blocker... that's the main reason I use it over Safari. If they added that to Safari, I'd be all in. And with UNO, Firefox looks great... : )

Jun 11, 07 - 07:33 pm Comment from: Mike

As much as I like and use Safari as my everyday browser, there are still those nasty sites that require Firefox. Zillow for anything and Trulia for its "heat maps" for example. I'm sure there are many others that don't play nice with Safari. Banking sites can be problematical, too.

Jun 11, 07 - 07:54 pm Comment from: since1985

mac2010 you're right. everyone here is missing the point. The reason apple came out with a Windows version of Safari is the same reason they came out with a Windows version of iTunes. Safari is to iPhone as iTunes is to iPod. This may have been a more recent iPhone software development since the MacWorld keynote: that the way to open up software development is to go through Safari. well, to succeed in that direction, you've got to allow software developers to develop such applications that can also work with their desktop machines ... it makes sense to roll out a Windows version of Safari so that there is no limitations to the Windows user or developer whatsoever.

I think another reason is the halo effect. Once users start using the safari browser on the iPhone -- and like it -- they are going to be inclined to want that same experience on their desktop, even if it's in Windows. If they like Safari in Windows and iTunes in Windows, then just maybe one day we've got a switcher. The whole "ice cube in hell" bit I think has impressed Steve Jobs as to the power of Apple designed software in Windows.

If Apple wins the browser wars, then that's just icing on the cake.

Jun 11, 07 - 07:56 pm Comment from: MCCFR

Mike (for one, and only because he vaguely has a clue) and Ballmer (because you're probably closer than you think)…

You must be careful about letting the tail wag the dog.

If I were Apple, the install CD for the iPhone (v2.0) would contain the Safari installer and install it as a default browser, unless the user selected a custom install and deselected.

In three years, I'd have another 80 million users of Safari on the iPhone and another 40 million using it under Windows - if you're a web developer and you ignore that userbase, you're an idiot who deserves to be slapped around the head with a frozen halibut.

Once you make your site recognize my browser as an equal, you can start to develop Web 2.0/Ajax apps that function transparently across Windows, Mac and iPhone - that makes your life as a developer easier and delivers greater value to the customer.

In any case, Apple wins - as does the commitment to open standards - and Microsoft (and its proprietary approach) loses.

Jun 11, 07 - 08:03 pm Comment from: since1985

AshNazg: try Saft for Safari. http://haoli.dnsalias.com Has ad banner blocker and tons of other features, such as saving previously opened browser windows when re-opening or as a crash protection.

The developer is on top of things. He regularly updates Saft so it is compatible with each update of Safari.

Jun 11, 07 - 08:05 pm Comment from: since1985

Oh, AshNazg, it'll put you back 12 bucks.

MW: moral. As in it's moral to give these guys the dough for it.

Jun 11, 07 - 08:07 pm Comment from: Well Well Well

It looks like Windows is getting Mac OS X feature creep!!, iTunes and now Safari. What's next? iChat? Mail? iPhoto?

Oh wait, how is those photo's supposed to get on the iPhone anyhow?

Jun 11, 07 - 08:09 pm Comment from: ken1w

I don't think Microsoft should be too concerned beyond any concerns it had with Firefox. The typical drone Windows PC user is not going to install another browser as long as IE works OK. If they install it, there will be another reason, such as iPhone interaction. Or perhaps they "get a Mac" first, decide they like Safari, and install it on their work PC. In other words, Safari will gain certainly gain some traction, but most Windows PC users are not going to install it just for the sake of using Safari.

Jun 11, 07 - 08:11 pm Comment from: theloniousMac

Hmmm... running Safari under Windows now.

Boy, they've duplicated the bugs right along with everything else.

Jun 11, 07 - 08:12 pm Comment from: MacGuy

Yes I want to use free sites like macdailynews.com, that are supported by ads, and come every day and read and post...... bla bla...

...but I don't want to see any banner ads on the site, even if they could interst me...

I want to be blind... what hypocrite morons!

Jun 11, 07 - 08:12 pm Comment from: No Squirt For You

The new find feature in Safari 3 is pretty cool. Similar to FF but better looking.

Jun 11, 07 - 08:13 pm Comment from: since1985

Good point, WellWellWell, but that's not a new issue. How do Windows users get their photos on an iPod? Anybody? Does iTunes for Windows sync with the normal Windows Pictures folder, or whatever it's called, instead of an application like iPhoto? (Forgive my ignorance of all things Windows. I'm not ashamed; I don't do Windows.)

MW: appeared. As in, it appeared to just work.

Jun 11, 07 - 08:28 pm Comment from: Scarbro

I installed the Safari Beta for Mac and I can't play any quicktime movies on any sites including apple/trailers!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Jun 11, 07 - 08:33 pm Comment from: Rosy Balmer

This is playing right into our hands. We'll be releasing a MAC version of the the Zune in Bondi Blue and we'll be bundling IE 7 for the MAC with every copy... and Media Player yeah we'll bring that back too... with lots of DRM goodness.

This is War I tell you, War!

Off subject but....

I use firefox on my MacBook Pro for a couple of reasons, but I would like to try safari, but I can't figure out how to have new links by default open in a new tab instead of a new window.

You can do it in firefox but can't figure out how to do it in Safari...If anyone can help on this I would appreciate it.

RE: Shinobi-

Right-click with a two-button mouse and/or control-click on a link and select 'Open Link in New Tab'

Safari => Preferences => Tabs

" Command-Click : Opens a link in a new Tab"

tab by default would make every click you do on these interwebs appear in a new tab. and that seems rather silly - I'd have 1000 tabs open a day.

You can also make a collection of links in a subfolder of the bookmarks bar... and right click on it "Open in Tabs" is an option - so if you need a buncha pages open, all tabbed from the get go for work, use a bookmarks folder.

Jun 11, 07 - 09:17 pm Comment from: MCCFR

Shinobi…

In Safari, that requires turning on tabs (and the first option), and then using the Command key as you click.

In Shiira (which is practically a sibling to Safari), it's just an option in the prefs.

Jun 11, 07 - 09:27 pm Comment from: Spark

@shinobi

Go to Safari Preferences/General tab. At the very bottom select " Open links from applications: in a new tab in the current window"

Amen, and how is Apple taking advantage of iTunes to install milllons of Safari licenses? By bundling it like they did with Quicktime??

PS. By the way, check the top 'themes' for Firefox... they are butt ugly boring... or they imitate the Aqua interface. You ain't missing a thing.

Jun 11, 07 - 09:47 pm Comment from: Jesus

So far... for me at least.. Safari for Windows is a POS. Safari can't handle proxies.. for some reason.. it crashes the second I press "enter" after typing in my proxy user name and password at work.

It never really worked on my Mac either.. I always had to use Firefox.

Jun 11, 07 - 09:52 pm Comment from: iScott

Willie G,
the 'broad generalization' is based on the broad experience I have with developers on different projects with different companies for many years. Both Mac & PC users, both unanimously have always preferred firefox, grumbled over IE (cause there's not much choice), and absolutely despised having to 'tinker' till everything worked on Safari.

As far as UI, without anny add-ons, they're pretty much the same you know.

Jun 11, 07 - 09:59 pm Comment from: cb

I am a diehard Apple fan - but use Firefox. Safari just isn't getting better. Firefox is a great developers tool.

Jun 11, 07 - 10:01 pm Comment from: mark

And when the iPod gets wifi, yup iPod, guess what browser it will be tied to?

Then not only is every iPhone installer loading Safari, but every new iPod will be loading Safari as well.

The Apple building block plan just keeps moving forward.

Jun 11, 07 - 10:02 pm Comment from: cb

Case in point - been begging Apple for the ability to color code folders in the bookmarks bar since I use it as a production tool. But it falls on deaf ears. Firefox has a great set of extensions. Safari is the Audiovox stereo of it's time.

Jun 11, 07 - 10:06 pm Comment from: Peter

"This basically means that the only PC users that would stop to think about the web browser they're using and why, probably have already switched to Firefox."

I think Steve addressed this. Watch out--next time a Windows users downloads iTunes, they'll end up with Safari as well. Or at least a, "Hey, whle you're here, we have this thing called Safari which smokes IE7. Wanna download that, too, while you're here?"

Jun 11, 07 - 10:34 pm Comment from: aga

It's about this:
1) search revenue from the built in search pane (firefox gets $ too)
2) when you run mac os and windows, you want an easy way to sync your bookmarks across both... that's coming
3) they are leading up to releasing yellow box / you develop on the mac and release the software for both platforms (though that appears to not have made it into leopard, apple does have a history of using stuff first, then release it for others to use later)
4a) it helps webkit developers out by increasing the amount of site support for safari
4b) it puts pressure on all those idiots (like http://www.zillow.com) to quit eliminating browsers based on name instead of capability
4c) gives incentives for people to develop software based on safari as the standard instead of ie, which is important, especially for dual boot'rs
5) it's about marketshare, and marketshare is about money.

google (and now yahoo) benifit from search share, while ie people use msn. question remains how the other search sites will end up doing. turns out you need a popular browers with a search tab pointed to you to actually run a search site anymore.

it will be interesting to see what the web stats are at the end of the week. but we see a lot of safari/windows by end of week. might double safari's webshare overnight.

Jun 11, 07 - 10:43 pm Comment from: mattmattbobatt

When I fired up Safari on XP today the first thing I noticed was how the text DIDN'T look like crap. It's always a shock to go to a windows machine and see how awful it looks. I think people who try it will think about how nice it looks and think about the fit and finish of Apple products. I don't think market share is a concern. I think it serves mostly to undermine Windows user's feeling towards MS.

Jun 11, 07 - 10:52 pm Comment from: Andy

Dialtone,
I don't know if you're in advertising but thats brilliant.
_____

I downloaded it and my Mac dosn't meet requirements. MacBook Pro 2.33gHz 2gig, 10.4.9. Is this Leopard only? Leopard Beta (if there is one)

Jun 11, 07 - 10:57 pm Comment from: Peter G

This is all well and good but how about getting windows apps to run in OSX without having to install windows. There arn't many but there are a couple of apps i wouldn't mind. 3D Max, CAD, Captivate &Publisher;mainly. Not that I want them but it hekps me be compatable and able to read the files at least

Jun 11, 07 - 10:58 pm Comment from: Shinobi

Thanks for the Safari Tips on opening new links in tabs instead of new windows. Unfortunately though, it appears that you cannot make this the default option(i.e. you have to option click to open a link in a new tab).

@Javbw
It's actually pretty efficient to open links in tabs instead of new windows...for one it reduces clutter on the desktop and 2 you can easily manage the tabs instead of a bunch of windows..you should try it.

A good example if you are searching using google...you can click several interesting links and have each of them open a new tab without loosing your search results page or having to continuously go back after you view each link you click.

hitting the option key is not that bad, but FireFox gives you the option to open links in tabs by default just by clicking on a link(no extra keys required).

Anyway...I have downloaded the beta version of Safari 3.0 so far its working pretty well, no other complaints.

Jun 11, 07 - 11:39 pm Comment from: TowerTone's Attorney

I have been asked to relay an experience.

Seems that if you are running Parallels with Windows XP on your Mac, and you install Safari for Windows, and while surfing decide to go to .Mac, Safari will shut down as soon as you log in.

It happened three times.
I would not lie,
I am an attorney.
(ok, that's a lie...)
