  1. Not good news for iTunes pay per view downloads…

Report: Disney to Offer Shows Free Online
    Apr 10, 8:35 AM (ET)

    By The Associated Press

A published report says the Disney Company plans to start making some of its most popular programming available free on the Internet.

The Wall Street Journal says shows like “Desperate Housewives” and “Lost” would be available on a revamped Web site the morning after they air. The report says shows would be archived so viewers can eventually watch an entire season of shows from outlets including ABC and Disney Channel.

New technology would be aimed at preventing viewers from fast-forwarding through commercials, in an effort to keep advertisers happy.

  2. Regarding free Disney downloads above….
What??? I thought Steve was a board member of Disney? And aren´t those two programs the flagship ones available on iTunes?

Guess…the TV downloads are not going that great and Disney sees more revenue gain from commercials in shows.

  3. iTunes will still have PPV downloads; Disney is just offering streamed content WITH advertising breaks you can’t fast-forward though for free. There will still be plenty of people who want to download-to-buy.

  4. Actually not very few. I, and several of my friends who dowmload Lost, will continue to do so. I don’t want to watch commercials and I doubt that the new service will be iPod compatible, or Mac compatible for that matter. It probably uses WMV.

  5. “…I, and several of my friends who dowmload Lost,…”

Well that´s two if you count me, myself and I.
Amazing how people think if they do something millions of others are doing what they think is cool to spend their money and time on.

  6. There doesn’t seem to be a downside for Apple/iTMS. The availablility of in-demand iTMS content supports the sale of iPods and the preeminence of the iTMS. From Disney’s standpoint, they either get paid by advertisers for the “free” content or by the public for the paid content without commercials.

This is a win-win for Apple since the “free” content may attract more iTMS/iPod users who may become Mac users in the future.
