Apple to postpone Mac OS X Leopard until October in order to support Windows Vista?
Friday, March 23, 2007 - 10:08 AM EDT

Apple Store"Apple is expected to launch its next generation Leopard operating system (OS) in April, but according to industry sources, the release of the new OS will be postponed to October to allow Apple to make Leopard support Windows Vista through an integrated version of its Boot Camp software," Ruby Huang and Joseph Tsai report for DigiTimes.

"The sources pointed out that the launch delay is not due to software design problems with Leopard but instead is attributed to Apple's plan to have its new OS support Windows Vista through an integrated version of Boot Camp. Boot Camp is an Apple software application that currently assists in the installation of Windows XP on computers using Apple's latest OS. The company hopes with support for Vista, Mac computers using the new OS can grab more market share, according to the sources," Huang and Tsai report.

MacDailyNews Take: We have an uncontrollable urge to link you to this: Cramer talks about how traders manipulate Apple, others’ stock prices - March 20, 2007

Now, on a slightly different tack, Jacqui Cheng reports for Ars Technica, "Our sources have told Ars that there is very little chance ("and that would be pushing it") for Leopard to ship in late April—that is, if Apple wants to ship with a halfway stable operating system."

Cheng reports, "'We still have the same seed we got 2 weeks ago,' we are told. 'I'd say it's barely beta, not Final or Gold Master.' Is it possible that Apple is keeping some of its key developers in the dark by holding back a surprise, nearly-perfect build? Sure. Anything is possible. But seems like just about the worst idea ever if the company wants anyone's software to work when Leopard comes out. This is not super-insider information either, say our sources. 'Anybody who has really worked with a Tiger or Panther seed will know the same stuff.'"

"So can we expect a Leopard release in late April, for rizzle? I'm certainly not, and according to our sources, you shouldn't either... When do they personally theorize Leopard will actually be ready to ship? 'June.'"

MacDailyNews Note: Apple states on their website, "Leopard. Coming spring 2007." The last day of spring 2007 is June 20th.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Mar 23, 07 - 10:14 am Comment from: Randian

What a crock of crap! There is no way in Hell Steve will allow an inferior operating system like Vista to delay the release of Leopard. Period. Letting the inmates control the asylum has been tried before, with very poor results, I might add. Letting Microsoft's inadequacies affect AAPL and the rest of the Mac faithful would be suicidal.

Mar 23, 07 - 10:15 am Comment from: tom riddle

Why the heck would apple delay Leopard for Vista support?? They could accomplish this through a patch. Also, isn't vista just a shameless knockoff?? Why do i want to buy a fake rolex when i can get the real deal for cheaper?

I want Leopard... this spring, please...

Mar 23, 07 - 10:19 am Comment from: RC

Talk about a non-story here. I highly doubt that Vista support in Boot Camp is a major dealbreaker with getting Leopard out on time. 98% of Mac users that will use Windows in Boot Camp don't have any need for Vista anyway, XP support is plenty enough.

Until either Apple announces otherwise, or June 20th passes with nothing, Leopard is still on pace for an on time release. There are still 89 more days left until June 20th folks.

Mar 23, 07 - 10:20 am Comment from: R

Someone's trying to manipulate the stock.

Mar 23, 07 - 10:22 am Comment from: LinuxGuy and Mac Prodigal Son

Whether Apple ships this Spring -- by June 20 -- is debatable. It does not sound close to ready now, according to all developer sources we've read about. But to delay it to make it ready for Vista -- a Boot Camp issue -- is laughable.

Mar 23, 07 - 10:24 am Comment from: Toby Belch

As MDN points out - and I've just checked it to make sure - Apple states quite clearly that Leopard is coming in the spring.

I can't believe Apple wouldn't have discretely removed this if this were no longer the case.

What if, and I'm no programmer so I don't even know this is possible, But what boot camp is reinvented to allow the user to run Windows programs without a MS operating system.

Load in any programs written for XP or above game, photoshop, stock analyst program, Restaurant table management, whatever and it runs on a mac.

I can see the add now:

Windows Software, Mac Software, Linux Software - It all runs on your Mac under Tiger! No Microsoft needed!

The genius of OSX is that is is so damn good, and completes the great Mac hardware design, which also helps sell macs. Great design+ Great OS= Great end user experience day in, day out. If OSX stunk, Apple would have been bought by Sony a few years ago. The great design alone wouldn't have been a money maker.

If Tiger can do this, Apple will sell more Macs, and overtime we will see more and more Software written for OS X....'

But like I said, I don't even know if this is technically feasible..... But what a marketing coup it would be!

Mar 23, 07 - 10:38 am Comment from: MArk

What a bunch of cr*p. Who is listening to those guys? These analysts should be treated like mushrooms. Feed them sh*t and keep in darknes.

For now Leopard is coming in spring 2007.

Mar 23, 07 - 10:41 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

Apple: If you delay for the sake of Vista support, I shall shun you.
I doubt you'll do this, because, well, that's like postponing the iPhone so it will work with the Zune Marketplace.

And that would be criminally idiotic.

So. Let's ship this sucker, eh?

-c

Mar 23, 07 - 10:42 am Comment from: AP

April 15, Apple will finally announce the "secret" features with a Leopard demo. Apple will then announce that it wont ship until Summer 07 because all of the "secret" features need to be thoroughly tested before shipping Leopard.

Mar 23, 07 - 10:42 am Comment from: wings2Sky

It is clear that Apple has a surprise in Leopard that it is waiting to spring on all of us. I think that is the reason for the current seed to be substandard. But how that surprise is impacting the launch is another question. It could be that the surprise feature isn't ready yet or that some other component of the surpise feature (say something with iPhone, or appleTV or something like that) isn't ready. But there is not possible world that I can think of where Apple would delay the launch for Vista incorporation. Granted, Vista is the most widely used piece of software on the planet and OSX is hacked daily, but still.

Mar 23, 07 - 10:44 am Comment from: digirati

Vista? What's Vista?

Mar 23, 07 - 10:47 am Comment from: Fatty Arbuckle

Mac OS X's Bootcamp can "support" XP easily (althought it's not really support).

But the hardware requirements of Vista means that many Mac models, such as the MacBook (no separate graphics card) don't have the necessary oompf to run it. Why would Apple expose Windows sufferers to the promise of running Vista on a Mac, only to have it collapse under the weight of Vista's resource-gluttony? The point of Boot Camp is to be able to run a few Windows apps, not to run Windows itelf.

Keep Boot Camp an XP-only deal. It also stays on message--that Vista is something you DON'T want to "upgrade" to.

Mar 23, 07 - 10:47 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

Well, of course this is the promised land, the nirvana of personal computing, and this is, in all likelihood, exactly what Apple is working toward with BootCamp and virtualization.

But to hold up the ship date to make it work with an OS whose adoption rate has been tepid at best, is simply ludicrous. The installed base of XP is what we're after. Vista adopters are bound and determined to use PCs. They have to be, because to run Vista with any kind of success requires a brand new one. They are not worth chasing, not now, not when it means holding up the release of a FAR better OS.

Personally, I don't buy it for a second. If there is a delay, it's certainly not about Vista.

I pulled out the Ouija board and it spelled out:
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Release: June 11th, 2007, WWDC07, Moscone Center West, San Francisco, California.

It took about an hour but it was worth it.

Waiting for Vista? I don't think so. As someone said, a software update could fix that issue. Let's just wait until spring is over and then see where we are.

Mar 23, 07 - 11:10 am Comment from: john

I find this hard to believe. Vista isn't that important and leopard has all the Vista beating qualities as we know it now. Imagine when they show off all of the secret features that have not been revealed.
It makes absoulutely no sense as Vista compatability could always be added in a later update. Coming from Taiwan this rumor isn't credible at all.

Mar 23, 07 - 11:11 am Comment from: oh my

Hopefully you'll be able to do a "Custom" install (on Leopard) and be able to uncheck Boot Camp, like you can with all those language kits and all those printer drivers you dont need !

I, for one, am very happy I've never been able to open an .exe file,
and not interested in running any flavor of MicroCrap !
If so, then I cannot believe His Steveness would delay the launch
of Leopard for something as silly as Vista support .. when as tom riddle (and others) pointed out,
this is something which could be added later... such as the 10.5.1 Update !

Maybe, we should re-visit this goof-ball, when Leopard actually ships ... in June !

Apple,

Ship Leopard when it's ready.

Don't rush crap out the door over a self-imposed, we'll-ship-it-this-time deadline, like a certain other OS vendor has...

Another perfect argument for log-in/accounts for folks who would like to post here. I'm OK with cynical statements, and Apple-critical statements, but I have a real problem with all-caps statements. wink

Seriously, log-ins for posters is an issue here.

That aside, if they don't ship until October, a few of us here will have died from over-anticipation! And ... will they by-pass iLife'07 in the process?

DLMeyer - the Voice of G.L.Horton's Stage Page

Mar 23, 07 - 11:26 am Comment from: not fooled

I say complete BS.

Vista's market share is completely insignificant.

XP is the market you need to target for switchers.

If Vista gets any traction (heh) & eventually needs support, do it in 10.6 or something.

Mar 23, 07 - 11:29 am Comment from: Joe

@Fatty Arbuckle

Macbook not having enough oompf to run Vista? Sure it does. The integrated graphics of both the mac mini and the macbook are more than adequate to use the flashy aero effects of Vista. The integrated graphics has a wddm driver with vista. You just need to make sure you have enough base ram to enable it automatically. Otherwise you need to tweak a single key in the registry, but otherwise it runs perfectly fine.

More like they have decided to delay Leopard in order to support radical new hardware interface - having realised the Vista is so poor that there isn't any rush to get 10.5 out the door to compete.

Mar 23, 07 - 11:47 am Comment from: G4Dualie

Assuming for a minute the story turns out to be true, it would appear as though Apple is now compensating for the shortcomings of Windows.

Mar 23, 07 - 11:49 am Comment from: OBill-Wan Kenobi

I'd also like an account for posting. It creates more of a community feeling, IMHO.

@ChrissyOne

How are those t-shirts coming?

Mar 23, 07 - 11:50 am Comment from: MacGeek Pro

I really doubt apple will hold back leopard just to have vista support for boot camp. They can still realease leopard and offer boot camp support for vista later. Apple wouldn't take this high of a gamble to risk disinterests from the enterprise for the lack of support for vista in boot camp. Thats something Microsoft is really good at doing. ( 5 years for a new windows OS)

Mar 23, 07 - 11:50 am Comment from: @WWDC

Now, you want to have a nice series of posters for WWDC, don't you think?

Leopard will be all over the place at WWDC and developers will probably get a Leopard WWDC preview version.

Mar 23, 07 - 11:54 am Comment from: Mr. Peabody

Uh - HELL NO!

It'll be here end of June - everybody go back to your homes.

Mar 23, 07 - 11:56 am Comment from: No Log-Ins For Posters!!

One of the things I like about MDN is the free-for-all. That is encouraged by no log in. If there were log ins, we probably wouldn't have a Zune Tang. There probably wouldn't be as many different, newbie posters just "popping in." No doubt, it would reduce overall traffic to MDN as it would be less welcoming. Right now, anyone and everyone feels comfortable coming here and adding their 2 cents. Then, they are more likely to return occasionally, then more frequently. It creates a real PUBLIC space. Those of you who want a "private club" type of atmosphere can go to many other sites wit log-ins. I know, with that very "public" feeling there are some downsides (though some of us don't get bent out of shape over a poster using CAPS--LOL). But the site is much more alive and interesting, and some of us prefer that. I hope MDN sees that it's also in their business interest.

Apple delayed iTunes and AppleTV for Vista compatibility.

NOT!

That, and manipulating stock prices, is all you need to know.

Mar 23, 07 - 12:24 pm Comment from: Famous Grouse

Tiger and parallels are good enough for me - what I want is NEW HARDWARE, like an ultraportable (to replace my 12" G4 powerbook) and a small desktop machine (so I can replace the 20" CD iMac with something that can hold 4-8GB of RAM and at least two hard drives - I hate plugging in externals for backups. I only bought the iMac because the 600 watts of heat coming of my G5 tower was too much to live with. I wouldn't mind 4 cores and two optical drives if they can do it in something less than 18" tall.)

There's no pressure to get Leopard out until Vista SP1 arrives. Most people I know see Vista for what it is and are deferring their decisions anyway.

Mar 23, 07 - 12:38 pm Comment from: no logins

It seems that more and more sites are doing accounts with the completely stupid ranking system of "(s)he who posts more is obviously better" which is, of course, ridiculous. And the "titles" associated with post count....

Putting logins on this site will drastically cut down on activity here. I logins would hurt this site.

Mar 23, 07 - 12:40 pm Comment from: Irish Dude

No point in believing this for a second folks. Didn't Oppenheimer say only a few weeks ago that they were still on track for a Spring release? I think he did.
