Apple to refund customers to resolve replacement power adapter lawsuits
Thursday, May 08, 2008 - 06:22 PM EST

"Apple Inc. agreed to pay refunds of $25 to $79 to as many as 2.3 million Mac computer customers to resolve claims that some of its power adapters were prone to spark," Bloomberg News reports.

"Customers who bought certain replacement adapters for PowerBook and iBook computers are eligible for the settlement, according to documents filed in federal court in San Jose. U.S. District Court Judge James Ware granted preliminary approval of the agreement March 24," Bloomberg News reports.

"The class action lawsuit, filed in 2006, alleged Apple misrepresented problems with the power adapters. In 2001, Apple recalled about 570,000 power adapters sold worldwide with Macintosh PowerBook G3 personal PCs after reports of overheating," Bloomberg News reports. "A hearing on final approval of the settlement was scheduled for Sept. 8."

I lost three over the past 3 years using my PB 17".

Is this payable outside the US?

May 08, 08 - 05:40 pm Comment from: LateRegistrant

Yet another reason why I prefer not to be an early adapter.

May 08, 08 - 05:41 pm Comment from: iamdj

Well now what? I guess Apple should shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.

May 08, 08 - 05:45 pm Comment from: clinicaltechmaster

They can keep my part of the settlement money ... I got great value from their computers and made tons on Apple stock.

May 08, 08 - 06:21 pm Comment from: HMCIV

Huh I thought is was the wall outlet. Excuse me, I gotta file a class action against my desk lamp.

May 08, 08 - 06:30 pm Comment from: boyweho

2001? For PowerBook G3s? I had a Lombard (in '99?) and moved on to a 12" Aluminum over three years ago... Is Apple still liable for my LC, my Quadra 630? This is such the issue w/ class action lawsuits: a lot of time and trouble for -- $25. Maybe $79. Woo-hee! And only a small fraction will go to the trouble to collect any of this. CALs are all about the lawyers.

Are we talking about the little UFO power adapters that the old carry-handle-iBooks had? I eBay'd mine years ago... can I still get the money? I'm sure I have burns and scars somewhere to prove it! You'll be hearing from my people, Jobs!!!

May 08, 08 - 08:44 pm Comment from: Real World

Is there anything Apple makes that they haven't been sued over? They really need to stop shipping pretty looking crap.

May 09, 08 - 12:53 am Comment from: Cullen Factor

ChrissyOne, read the article before you pee your panties, okay?

May 09, 08 - 01:23 am Comment from: gorgalor

Apple's power adapters are really, really shitty. Especially the mag safe ones. There absolute pieces of crap, but I have never ever heard a mumble about it on MDN. Why? Check out the reviews:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=MTM5NDU&nplm=MA938LL/A

All the mag safe ends begin to fray and melt. It happened to mine, but thankfully it was covered under AppleCare. I have other quality concerns about my MBP, too. My top case needed to be replaced because it was corroding. The battery was about to explode, and was replaced under recall. My hard drive died. My LCD display suffers from temporary dark spots on the left side. The finish on 4 of my keys on my keyboard have come off, and my return key is cracked in half. I still absolutely love my computer. I won't be an apologist for Apple, though. We, as fanatics, need to demand better quality.

Bleh! I meant *they are*. My fingers type faster than my head auto-corrects sometimes.

Fluff, lawyer enriching law suits that are meaningless. Piss on em.

May 09, 08 - 01:43 am Comment from: John

I have yet to buy a mac that hasnt needed to be repaired within two years - pretty looking crap about sums it up in my experience.

@gorgoalor

Care for your stuff, don't abuse it and it will last as long as you care for it to.

I have a week 13 build MacBook Pro (yes, unlucky 13), and it has been in use 8+hours daily for the last two years, including being moved for pillar to post, and with just a replacement battery for the Sony recall it is good as new.

All this nonsense you trolls spout is ridiculous. And I know I'm not alone because I have plenty of people I have converted.

Even my old TiBook, from 2001 is still going strong in daily use (my son has just done his Uni degree on it).

May 09, 08 - 06:16 am Comment from: Mark S.

John, take care of your stuff and it will last!

I have been a Mac Tech many years and I have seen people take care of their equipment and it lasts.

Others, apparently like you, treat their Macs roughly and they wonder why they have cracked displays, worn out HD, cracked cases and so on.

I have an iMac that is 8 years old, runs great and has had nothing but software upgrades/updates.

Use, don't abuse!

May 09, 08 - 08:03 am Comment from: Demon

I have a Ti Book 500Mhz G4 with one of the YoYo Power adapters and their both still working great. I've no issues. Do finally need to replace the Ti Books Battery has it only lasts about an hour now before needing a recharge.

May 09, 08 - 08:04 am Comment from: Asmodeus

Same here. I'm still using the Wallstreet 'book I bought 10 years ago. Only thing it's had is software, memory, and processor upgrades and it runs like a champ. After ten years!!

Take care of your stuff and it'll take care of you.

May 09, 08 - 09:20 am Comment from: jtc

my uncle still has a mac from the late 80's ... seems to still boot up and run not that there is even a use for it now other than to stare at it. smile Some people do have shit luck with computers but most the time it's a user error or PEBKAC(problem exists between keyboard and chair)

@gorgalor ever realise that most of those problems if not all were from the faulty sony battery that the recalled??????

You can lead a horse to water.. but you can't make it think.

May 09, 08 - 10:00 am Comment from: john

To Mark. S.:

I have owned many computrers over the past 20 years and know how to look after them thank you very much - not one of my PCs ever failed on me, but every Mac I have owned (now into my third one) has had one issue or another and had to be repaired.

May 09, 08 - 10:30 am Comment from: Cubert

John,
You've got bad luck. Maybe the next 3 will treat you better. There is a reason people are still running Macs 8 or 10 years old - because they are well made and still "just work".

Don't despair.

May 09, 08 - 11:37 am Comment from: gorgalor

Sorry, guys. I take crazy good care of my computer. I shit you not when I say that I wipe it down with a baby blanket every night. My MBP set me back $2700, including AppleCare when I bought it new almost 2 years ago. It's not a "blame the user" situation here. And stating that because *you* take good care of your equipment and *you* haven't had a problem, therefore Apple does not have quality issues is a logically flawed statement (sampling error). There are well known Apple quality issues out there. Please, don't be awestruck fanboys when it comes to Apple products, and apologize for the company when it rolls out a faulty product. It's not the big bad, ne'er do well lawyers that are the problem here. It's Apple. The world won't end if you say, "Apple made a faulty product," and they need to get their act together.

Just my $.02.
