Generator Research: Apple to surpass Nokia’s market share by 2013
Tuesday, July 07, 2009 - 04:47 PM EDT

Apple Online Store "Apple's share of the smartphone market is growing quickly enough that it could overtake Nokia's in as little as four years, according to data from Generator Research," Electronista reports.

"The analyst group sees the market almost reversing itself from its situation today and believes Nokia will tumble from about 40 percent share today to just 20 percent in 2013," Electronista reports.

"iPhones, meanwhile, should accelerate and hit 33 percent of the market at the same point. Apple would match Nokia's share sometime in 2011 and ship as many as 77 million phones that year," Electronista reports.

"The apparent flip is expected to come about both through ideal conditions for Apple as well as an inability for Nokia to pay attention to smartphones as much as it would like. Generator sees Apple as entering a "golden age" of fast growth both because of the combination of the iPhone and the App Store, with one driving sales of the other," Electronista reports. "It also has the benefit of selling both to smartphone users as well as to existing iPod owners. A crossover device appealing to high end media phone users, such as the $99 iPhone 3G, should also give the company a boost."

[UPDATE: 5:42pm EDT: Removed "smartphone" from headline in reference to market share. Thanks "Tommy Boy."]

Surprising iPhone hasn't passed them already. The day the iPhone is supported by multiple carriers it will be game over, for everyone.

Of course, Nokia will still boatloads of cheap phones in the third world and elsewhere for those who don't want / can't afford an iPhone.

Or are in the USA and have issues with AT&T;.

Jul 07, 09 - 06:19 pm Comment from: qka

The Electronista headline is Apple to pass Nokia in smartphone share by 2013

MDN, you were correct the first time and screwed up listening to "Tommy Boy".

Even David Spade could tell you that.

血風呂! is Japanese for "Bloodbath!" (according to the Translation widget.

Of course, Nokia is a Finnish company, so a Japanese statement may not be the most appropriate (and the Translation widget doesn't do Finnish).

Can anyone help out there?

Jul 07, 09 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Tommy Boy

@qka: iCal it. When the Christmas quarter results are released in early 2011 you'll find that Apple had already passed Nokia in smartphone market share and 3 years later you'll find Apple is a bigger phone company than Nokia.

Jul 07, 09 - 06:35 pm Comment from: Gordon Horne

@qka,

According to InterTran, there is no Finnish equivalent to "bloodbath", which might explain why Nokia was caught off guard.

It translates "blood bath" as "totuttaa vereen kylvettää".

Uhhhh.....try by the end of 2011. Not 2013.

Jul 07, 09 - 07:23 pm Comment from: ApplePi

A more accurate translation would probably be rendered: 血祭り

Blood festival

Jul 07, 09 - 10:36 pm Comment from: bertyao

i don't think so unless smart phones become more popular than cheap phones.

Jul 07, 09 - 11:29 pm Comment from: GizmoDan

The article says that "Apple would match Nokia's share sometime in 2011."

So why does the headline say "Apple to surpass Nokia’s market share by 2013"?

Which is it? The day after you match their share, you surpass it. Should not take two more years, unless they will be exactly even for two years. Makes no sense.

Bloodbath is "verilöyly" in Finnish.

Nokia is a Finnish company... soon to be a finnished company

Keep up the great work Nokia!

Jul 08, 09 - 10:24 am Comment from: Predrag

Or, as we would say it in the old country:

крвопролиће

We'll still have to wait a few years for this particular bloodbath, but it looks like it's coming for sure.

Jul 08, 09 - 02:14 pm Comment from: mreposter

To gain significantly more market share Apple needs do to two things: 1. Start selling in China, 2. Drop exclusive carrier deals. Apple should be able to close a deal for china this year and will likely add multiple carrier deals as part of the transition to 4G. For instance, in the USA, Verizon should be able to support 4G about the same time as AT&T;.

[UPDATE: 5:42pm EDT: Removed "smartphone" from headline in reference to market share. Thanks "Tommy Boy."]

C'mon MDN, get real..there is not a chance in hell that Apple will ever surpass Nokia in market share unless Apple starts to sell cheap ass phones as well, which they won't.

Now smart phones is another deal....Apple is ahead probably a bit sooner.
