RUMOR: Apple to unveil ‘Mac Pro’ with new enclosure design, Intel Core 2 Duo at WWDC next month
Monday, July 03, 2006 - 05:00 PM EST

"When Apple unveils its Power Mac G5 replacement at its Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) next month, the top-of-the-line computer will sport a new enclosure," Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret.

"While specifics were not disclosed, the new computer's case is said to be substantially different enough to make the distinction between the new Intel Core 2 Duo-powered system and its PowerPC predecessor easy to spot," Katz reports.

"Configurations of the new Mac are said to be similar to the most recent Power Mac G5, including a single dual-core processor in the low- and mid-range systems, and a dual dual-core (quad core) system at the top," Katz reports. "Meanwhile, sources say that a new enclosure is waiting for the MacBook Pro and will be released when that system adopts Intel's mobile Core 2 Duo processor."

Jul 03, 06 - 04:12 pm Comment from: GmJm

It doesn't take a psychic to see this one coming!

A rumor isn't a rumor if it is as obvious as predicting being hit by a train if you're standing on the tracks and you hear the air horn blasting.

I predict that tomorrow will be July 4th. DUH!!!

Jul 03, 06 - 04:16 pm Comment from: Short Bus Driver

GmJm,

Exactly how obvious can it be when the MacBook Pro enclosure is very similar to a PowerBook? Or that the iMac upon transition to Intel stayed exactly the same? Or the unchanged Mac mini?

Now, I'll make it easy for you:

Get back on the bus, stay in your seat, keep that protective helmet on your head and shut up until I dump your 'tard ass back at the home!

i wanted to see a dual quad core desktop mac
damit!!
woodcrest, where are you?
over 150 manufacturers already announced PC motherboards for two quad woodcrest CPUs!!
Apple come on, you can do better than that

think its gonna be hard to resist buying the new powermac but i gots to wait for maya and photoshop (dont really wanna get windows versions for boot camp - actually dont really want boot camp at all lol) my dp 2.7 is still going strong though and holds up well.

Jul 03, 06 - 04:43 pm Comment from: to zero

dual QUAD core woodcrests? they don't exist, and nothing like that will be for sale by Intel until 2007. this is already known from Intel.

dual DUAL core = 4 cores and Woodcrest can do that. that's all you can hope for this year from any company.

quad cores on one chip now? not. gonna. happen.

To ease the transition to Intel, Apple's been easing into it. The iMacs stayed the same, the Macbooks were a welcome departure, and the Mac Pros are going to be sharp. This is a way of conveying confidence-- a link to the tried and true with a clear hint at new-and-bold.

The new stuff is going to be really polished. Can't wait.

Heh heh. I sound dumb. Beer. Happy Independence Day.

Jul 03, 06 - 05:04 pm Comment from: maczealot

I'll take anything but plastic. Perhaps brushed titanium or titanium-aluminum laminate. I like the all-metal exterior of the G5; it is both attractive and functional. I also appreciate the systematic and orderly array of components and expansion slots inside the G5. Any improvement on this classic will be truly amazing. I hope that the new towers exude the same aura of power and performance as the venerable G5.

Jul 03, 06 - 05:06 pm Comment from: Channel Z

I cry bullsh*t

"Configurations of the new Mac are said to be similar to the most recent Power Mac G5, including a single dual-core processor in the low- and mid-range systems, and a dual dual-core (quad core) system at the top

If indeed Apple puts out these models don't buy it as it's a total waste of money.

First off dual cores are now IN CONSUMER BASED MAC's, so what's a dual core Mac Pro going to offer that's substancially better to justify the price? A few expansion options? More RAM? Big fscking deal. Dual core boxes are almost obsolete in the professional line, it's like the single 1.6 Ghz G5 PowerMac's. A total waste of effort to even consider them.

Intel has a Kensfield QUAD processor that's slightly better than a dual dual-core PowerMac (quad) and will most likely be the processor used in the new Mac Pro's Quad.

With BlueRay and intense HD rolling around the corner very VERY shortly, I would not spend several thousand dollars for a Mac Pro without BlueRay and AT LEAST DUAL QUADS!!

That's right, because of the Quad core Kensfield processor, there is now room enough FOR TWO QUAD CORES IN A CASE.

Since processors cannot be made to really go much faster in clock speed and other improvements, the makers have been doubling up the cores. Since dual cores are the norm now quad cores will be the professional processors.

I predict not dual cores. But two lines of Quad Core Mac Pro's and a single (pricey) Dual Quad Core Mac Pro.

The Dual Quad Core Mac Pro with BlueRay drive and HDCP would be the box to get.

Jul 03, 06 - 05:13 pm Comment from: Channel Z

quad cores on one chip now? not. gonna. happen.

Kensfield - Intels "Quad core" processor, has already been leaked out. The production date is January 2006 and Apple will most likely get their hands on them earlier.

The Kensfield processor can do the Cinebench 2003 "Daylight" Mulit test in 16-18 seconds depending how much it's overclocked.

The PowerMac Quad can do the test in 19-24 seconds, depending on which version of Cinebench is used.

Jul 03, 06 - 05:21 pm Comment from: Channel Z

And just one more thing...

Because of HDCP and BlueRay drives, a special DRM will be needed to protect HD content from the processors (where it's decoded) to the monitor.

Present Apple monitors (and PC monitors too) don't have a DRM chip in them to decode the DRM scheme Apple will need to use so we can watch full High Def BD-DVD's on our computers.

Also with EFI, we really won't be in control of our hardware anymore. The OS will be run in a sandbox mode from the hardware. With all hardware calls going through EFI to gain permission to the hardware.

Try copying that HD movie with screen record software and your just fscked.

Also drives for EFI can be downloaded from the internet BEFORE THE OS EVEN LOADS!!!

Oh we are going to be hacking EFI to be able to regain control over our machines again. With the new EFI based Mac's, our privacy is totally fscking GONE!!!.

Don't beleive me?

All part of Trusted Computing, HDCP and other industry controls over our hardware.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_computing

Jul 03, 06 - 05:27 pm Comment from: Channel Z

So I would wait until the Dual Quad Mac Pro's with BlueRay DVD drives are released with 10.5

I would also wait to buy a Apple monitor until the DRM chip is in them.

This would be the best money value choice of hardware.

Your welcome. smile

Jul 03, 06 - 05:31 pm Comment from: Jay

I'm not sure Apple will ever use woodcrest but it makes sense that they aren't using it in this generation. 4 cores is already more than almost anyone needs. Of course your average top end powermac buyer is not your average user because they have practical uses for that power and they run applications that can use multiple cores like FCP, Photoshop, Motion, Maya, but other than the Apple-written-pro-apps none have gone universal. I think that a G5 quad running these things would still outperform an octo-woodcrest, or at least it won't be left in the dust, and it costs much less than Apple's dual-quad-woodcrest would cost. I think we are all in for a price shock when the mac pros come out. The "Power is more expensive than x86" myth was never more false than at the top, where the G5 had a tremendous performance to price ratio. Intel's top chips usually cost 900-1000 each, probably about 5-6 to OEMs. I don't know what the G5 chips were costing apple but if they were spending 1200 on just processors and managed to include everything else a computer needs plus the legendary Apple profit margins at 3000 I am very impressed. I expect the top of the line powermac replacement to cost several hundred more than the powermac ever did.

Jul 03, 06 - 05:49 pm Comment from: Jay

For the love of Fair Use please don't wait until the DRM chips are in the monitors. If we refuse to buy the things they'll have to give up. If a critical number of users buy into all the copy protection they can sell us we'll never get rid of it. If we keep the majority from moving into a DRM encumbered scheme maybe they will lighten up.

Wow what insight. Is Katz predicting the sun will rise at sunrise too?

"While specifics were not disclosed, the new computer's case is said to be substantially different enough to make the distinction between the new Intel Core 2 Duo-powered system and its PowerPC predecessor easy to spot,"

35 words to say nothing? Does this guy moonlight in politics?

So there are no specifics, only guesses that a new pro deskop will get a new-style case. Y-a-w-n. It's gotta be a slow news day when fluff like this gets headlines.

No chance, all computer makers are doing it. So is Microsoft, but they are so behind in everything else that EFI is only coming for 64 bit processors, not these lame ass 32 bit duo cores.

Look how many fools are buying up Intel processor based, thus EFI based, MacBook's.

They don't know any different what's in store for them later when DRM starts tightening up.

Right now as it is, many Apple programs and processes contact Apple without no explaination why it does it.

Some can be figured out, many just do it regardless.

Adobe software is now requiring root level install and phones home to verify the installation once in awhile.

Install Little Snitch and remove all the default rules. Start from nothing and watch how much crap is going out of your machine with no apparant purpose.

It's bad. Really bad. Apple knows too friggging much.

Jul 03, 06 - 07:27 pm Comment from: Happy4th

Of course Apple would have to redesign the MacPro (formerly known as "PowerMac") case. You'll have a lot of room now that the MASSIVE heat sinks would be scaled down. That will leave a lot of room for more features. I can hardly wait. My goose bumps has goose bumps.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY, Everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bring on the hots dogs, steaks, and potato salad. Some BBQ wouldn't be bad either.

Jul 03, 06 - 07:33 pm Comment from: Drunk Cheney

My rumor:

The New Mac Pro will be a Holographic core with a dual twist valve half switch mix converter that will power the new processing features.

The new body casing will be a die-cast unobtainium base that hovers on a full body of Dozentexistium alloy anti-gravity transverter mass controller. That all mean absolutely no heat generated. EVER!

But I'm not sure what the color will be.

Happy 4th. - for the U.S. citizens-- and anyone else in the world that cares to celebrate with us.

I hope they make additional space for more than two SATA drives... it would be really cool to have a 6 disk internal raid for HD work.

At the very least, they should make the internal SATA drives easier to access. I always worry I'm going ot damage the SATA cable when swapping drives...

Jul 03, 06 - 07:52 pm Comment from: mac Genius

Apple needs to pare down the "handles" on the G5 so it can fit in a standard 4-post rack unit without our having to saw the damn things off. The G4 handles were removeable, and rackmount hardware was available via 3rd parties. Even better, many PC cases simply slide in the rack on rails (e.g. HP 8200, etc..)

Racks are not just for xServes. Many pro audio and video people have them for various components including RAIDS and other hardware (e.g. AVID video editing systems.) And AVID claims that many of their Mac customers migrated to PCs for this very reason - or have held off on upgrading their computers from G4's.

"Intel has a Kensfield (sic) QUAD processor that's slightly better than a dual dual-core PowerMac (quad) and will most likely be the processor used in the new Mac Pro's Quad."

Last I heard about it, the Kentfield chip was scheduled for commercial release in early 2007. Looks like we'll be getting dual-core Conroes or Woodcrests next month.

As I'm a professional photographer looking to adopt Aperture, I would like to see a quad-processor machine with room for at least three internal drives: one for system & apps, and two others as a striped RAID to speed up Photoshop. The current inability to set up an internal RAID without putting the OS on it (absolutely not) is a gross oversight on Apple's part, considering the needs of many of its pro users for a fast internal RAID. Yeah, I know, there are third-party kits for adding internal drives, but I'd be leary of compromising the carefully engineered cooling system.

Since Aperture taxes the GPU so heavily, it'd be nice to see SLI (?) graphics, which, as I understand it, allows one to harness the power of two GPUs. Right now, a dual 2GHz G5 with X800 graphics is pretty much the absolute minimum for professional use of Aperture.

Jul 03, 06 - 11:58 pm Comment from: Channel Z

To optimize Photoshop, it's not about the hard drive speed anymore.

It's a 64 bit Mac G5, lots of RAM and Tiger. You work entirely in memory. Fsck caching to the hard drive for files over 2 GB. 40% faster.

And you can always get a 8 SATA port PCI card and external SATA drives, with a cable to each drive and you can RAID O that way for working with RAW images, saving the completed work to a regular drive in your off hours using auto backup software.

Far as speeding up your boot drive, look at the 10,000 RPM 150GB Western Digital Raptor (with a SATA PCI card if your G5 isn't a Quad.)

And you can make a external Firewire 800 drive a boot drive with the internal SATA ports a pair of RAID O, 10,000 RPM drives for about 175 MB p/s writes.

I would also avoid putting more drives inside the case of the G5, taxing the power supply, blocking airflow, more heat and other nasties. Since external SATA drives are avaiable at LaCie.

You need to check out Barefeats.com more often. smile

Apple has been able to announce new products and deliever them a few months later. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple gets their mitts on enough Kentfields to beat everyone else, after all Apple is adopting EFI rather quickly, having Intel make their MOBO's etc.

Apple said "by the end of the year" for the Mac Pro's to arrive. That's darn near early 2007.

I won't buy a dual core box, I already got one from three years ago. So does most everyone else.

By the way Apple has been hobbling Mac OS X lately, it's slight but it's there.

Nope, when the Dual Quads come with BlueRay, that's my green light.

The new MacPro will be powered by the Maximum Improbability Drive (MID). When it's booted up it will transform the surrounding 2,000 sq feet into an all night diner which will serve as its central processing unit.

Not only will it be able to render high definition 3d images, it will actually be able to transform the space time continuum and create virtual reality 4-dimensional environments in real time without the need for monitors by melding with the users' brains.

All this for an affordable $1,999
