Apple turns spotlight on notebooks at special media event next Tuesday, Oct 14
Thursday, October 09, 2008 - 12:36 PM EST

It's official!

Apple has emailed an invitation to media outlets for a special event to be held in Apple's Town Hall on the company's Cupertino campus on Tuesday, October 14th at 10am PDT/ 1pm EDT.

Unlike past invitations, there is little ambiguity in the image. It's Mac notebook time, folks!

MacDailyNews Note: Congrats to the 54% who answered "yes" to our poll yesterday, "Will Apple debut new Mac notebooks before Halloween?" You were right! (21% voted "no," 25% voted "don't know.")

YES, OH YES!

Oct 09, 08 - 11:44 am Comment from: Dr Mcr

Thank goodness for thet. We can all stop agonising now. We know it is happening!

Oct 09, 08 - 11:47 am Comment from: Macintosher

I think this is true... Who were the people saying "I call fake!" They'll have to be punished (not really grin ). Let the world rejoice!

Oct 09, 08 - 11:47 am Comment from: big el

doesnt look very curved to me?

Oct 09, 08 - 11:47 am Comment from: Angelus520

Damn! I'm going to be in S.F. on vacation so was hoping for Moscone!

Oct 09, 08 - 11:47 am Comment from: Macintosher

I forget question marks occasionally... ?

Oct 09, 08 - 11:50 am Comment from: makemineamac

I cannot wait. Failed logic board - (on my current MBP) - be damned! I'm movin' on up!

Awesome, exciting news! Thank you MDN for letting us know!

Oct 09, 08 - 11:52 am Comment from: Macintosher

4th comment (sorry): thanks for the congratulations. But we still don't know what the "Brick" is!

Oct 09, 08 - 11:58 am Comment from: Anonymous©

Okay, the invite, itself, looks like the glass trackpad rumor is true.

Oct 09, 08 - 11:58 am Comment from: twilightmoon

No way this is just a speed bump, they do that with simple press releases and slight changes to the online store. This is gonna be significant redesign.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:00 pm Comment from: gmac

well, for those who thought the timing of October didnt make sense... just think about it. Apple unloads current stock of MB/MB pros prior to school season for the reasonable purchaser. Then baits those who want something new, when they might have bought one with the MB + free iPod deal. Smart. The stock is up on news. So, i missed my opportunity to get AAPL as low as 82. Oh well... that's why we do options.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:00 pm Comment from: Invitation Day

Congrats to "Invitation Day" who informed you yesterday that today would be Invitation Day!

You may be right about the glass trackpad, but how do you get that from just looking at the invitation?

Oct 09, 08 - 12:07 pm Comment from: DJ

Phew that's all right then!

Me, sister, daughter, are all standing in line.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:10 pm Comment from: Jeremy

Just to be negative ... smile

Really underwhelming ad copy there.
"The spotlight turns to notebooks" ???

They'd have been better off with just the image and the date underneath.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:12 pm Comment from: L.A. Punk

omg....omg.....happy-happy-joy-joy.

I loves my Apple. Steve you rock!

Oct 09, 08 - 12:13 pm Comment from: MacDaddy

Where are the updated Mac Pros?

Oct 09, 08 - 12:15 pm Comment from: quad Core

'Okay, the invite, itself, looks like the glass trackpad rumor is true.'

Looks like ajust the cover of a laptop to me....

Oct 09, 08 - 12:15 pm Comment from: R2

What's with all the nonsense about timing? The suburban white people who will buy these MacBooks aren't feeling any economic crunch. They can't wait to toss the notebook they bought last year in order to get the new one.

You can't be at Starbucks typing on the last generation MacBook. It's a faux pas.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: clinicaltechmaster

@R2

Bite me.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Jeff

Is that a charcoal colored notebook I see?

Oct 09, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: ralph from berlin

yes! they are coming and steve is healthy. i am happy!!

and how about one more thing this time?

Oct 09, 08 - 12:19 pm Comment from: Quad Core

'They'd have been better off with just the image and the date underneath.'

Does the actual invite have that text, or wa it added by the person writing the article?

Oct 09, 08 - 12:19 pm Comment from: Buster

@R2
You are absolutely right. Us whities cannot wait to junk last years crap. We rich guys have a rep to live up to or else the poor won't respect and fear us....at least at Starbucks anyway.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:19 pm Comment from: coolfactor

The invite itself suggests a trackpad innovation. You can see the inner rectangle that's about the same shape/size.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:20 pm Comment from: Bob

Maybe the spotlight has more meaning that it seems?

Oct 09, 08 - 12:20 pm Comment from: Quad Core

"What's with all the nonsense about timing? The suburban white people who will buy these MacBooks aren't feeling any economic crunch. They can't wait to toss the notebook they bought last year in order to get the new one. "

Aren't there better places to promote racism?

Oct 09, 08 - 12:23 pm Comment from: Quad Core

'The invite itself suggests a trackpad innovation. You can see the inner rectangle that's about the same shape/size.'

The trackpad thing might be true, but the invide looks like a MB cover over a black background.......

Gotta go, I think I see a dragon in the clouds....

Oct 09, 08 - 12:23 pm Comment from: Predrag

Angelus:

Cupertino is quite close to SF. If yoj're renting a car, you could easily drive there. Little good will it do for you, though, unless you have been invited and are a member of some media outlet.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:32 pm Comment from: wmd

Acorn did not register me to vote. I wish I could of voted.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:37 pm Comment from: bizlaw

@ R2:

What a moronic thing to say. I know plenty of suburbanites who are white, black, latino and asian who are experiencing a lot of financial trouble, some of whom are close to or have lost their home.

Take your ignorant, racist BS and shove it up your *ss.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:37 pm Comment from: Viktor

Just in time. My boss has decided to replace my crappy dell latitude for a MBP.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:42 pm Comment from: alansky

So much for the know-it-alls who said that Apple never announces a media event less than a week in advance. It must be weird to go through life always looking in the rear-view mirror.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:42 pm Comment from: Amazin1

And now the hardcore speculation begins, followed by hardcore disappointment next Tuesday.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:43 pm Comment from: mm

Finally!!! I will be getting one. My iBook G4, bless its heart, still works great, but I need some speed. I am psyched.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:46 pm Comment from: Flackman

This will be my first Apple ever. Been waiting for this since a family member showed me his old G4 15 months ago on a family reunion in Austria. Wanted a Macbook ever since.

Finally!!!

Oct 09, 08 - 12:46 pm Comment from: Q4

So it's either new laptops next Tuesday or alien spaceships are going to appear over Alabama.
I know the aliens will show up because a lady on YouTube said they would, so that settles it.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:48 pm Comment from: clinicaltechmaster

@bizlaw

nice comment.

Oct 09, 08 - 12:49 pm Comment from: Predrag

bizlaw:

R2 was being sarcastic. You haven't realised this, but you actually agree with him completely.

His point was that the economic downturn will hurt a lot of suburban people, who aren't necessarily white, or very affluent, and it will be difficult to sell these new MacBooks to them.

I say not really. I don't think Apple's target market will feel the crunch as badly as the average population. We'll know for sure in about ten days, when they announce guidance for the next quarter.

Il ove this! i want to have it put on a plaque and hung on the wall!

Oct 09, 08 - 01:00 pm Comment from: Loru

Sign me up baby!!!

Oct 09, 08 - 01:03 pm Comment from: iLife '09?

Will they also release iLife '09? iLife '08 was released in the same setting last year. Also, why hold an event if it's just a laptop redesign/spec bump. Nothing to really show off....

...unless there's One More Thing.

Oct 09, 08 - 01:06 pm Comment from: Grigori

Fan-friggin'-tastic! This is news we can use.

So, who's keeping track? When was the last new Mac computer model - notebook or otherwise - introduced? I'm thinking it's been quite awhile now...

Oct 09, 08 - 01:10 pm Comment from: @ R2

I'm fascinated.

Please tell us.

Are you a Republican or a Democrat?

I'd guess, with your hatred of the 'haves', that you'd be a Democrat, but then, there are a lot of rich Democrats.

Please tell us.

Oct 09, 08 - 01:21 pm Comment from: thethirdshoe

I predict they will be Very Snappy! grin

Oct 09, 08 - 01:27 pm Comment from: blucaso

It appears the "haves" and "have-nots" now refers (at least on MDN) to a sense of humor, as in some have not got one and take a throw-away sarcastic comment and try to create a flame war out of it.

It may not have been the funniest thing ever written, but really... smile you have-nots! Life's too short!

Oct 09, 08 - 01:32 pm Comment from: Zorpo

see? Rumours are always true.

Always.

Oct 09, 08 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Skinny Mac

Those of us who voted "Don't know" were right too!

Oct 09, 08 - 01:58 pm Comment from: MacintoshSoftwareList.com

Mac Mini is here to stay?

Oct 09, 08 - 02:00 pm Comment from: Nutcracker

I, for one, voted 'no'.

Apple usually refreshes laptops (yeah, i know, usually just the Macbooks) before the back-to-school season, so color me surprised about this one. I suppose they wanted to definitely get these done before Christmas though.

Now I know what I'll be asking Santa to bring. smile

Oct 09, 08 - 02:02 pm Comment from: PaKo

If a rumor has been shown to be true, is it still a rumor?
