Apple Updates iMac with faster processors and faster graphics option
Monday, April 28, 2008 - 08:36 AM EDT

Apple today updated its all-in-one iMac line with the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the most powerful graphics ever available in an iMac. With prices starting at US$1,199, iMac includes faster processors with 6MB L2 cache and a faster 1066 MHz front-side bus across the entire line, and 2GB of memory standard in most models. The 24-inch iMac now offers a 3.06 GHz Intel processor and the high-performance NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS graphics as options, extending iMac's lead as the ultimate all-in-one desktop computer for both consumers and professionals.

"The iMac's gorgeous aluminum and glass all-in-one design has been an incredible hit with our customers and is just one of the reasons Mac sales are growing three and a half times faster than PC sales," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in the press release. "With the latest Intel processors, a faster new graphics option and more memory, customers now have even more reasons to love the iMac."

Packing dual-core performance into the convenience of a striking all-in-one design, the new iMac includes faster Intel Core 2 Duo processors across the line; a 1066 MHz front-side bus; up to 4GB of 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory; and a widescreen flat-panel display supporting millions of colors. For the first time, the 24-inch iMac features an optional NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB of video memory, to deliver up to two times standard performance for graphic intensive applications. Providing the latest in high-performance connectivity options to quickly and conveniently transfer digital photos, music and video, iMac includes built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi networking for up to five times the performance of 802.11g; Bluetooth 2.1+EDR; Gigabit Ethernet; built-in iSight video camera; a total of five USB 2.0 ports (including two on the Apple Keyboard); and one FireWire 400 and one FireWire 800 port.

The iMac furthers Apple's commitment to environmental progress with highly recyclable and durable materials including scratch-resistant glass and professional grade aluminum. Every model in the iMac line is rated EPEAT Silver and the power-efficient iMac also meets the stringent Energy Star 4.0 requirements for power consumption. Customers who purchase any qualifying Apple computer can recycle their old PC or Mac for free via the Apple Recycling Program.

Every Mac in the Apple lineup comes with iLife '08, the most significant update ever to Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications, featuring a major new version of iPhoto and a completely reinvented iMovie, both seamlessly integrated with the new .Mac Web Gallery for online photo and video sharing. Every Mac also includes Leopard, the sixth major release of the world's most advanced operating system which features Time Machine, an effortless way to automatically back up everything on a Mac; a redesigned Finder that lets users quickly browse and share files between multiple Macs; Quick Look, a new way to instantly see files without opening an application; Spaces, an intuitive new feature used to create groups of applications and instantly switch between them; a brand new desktop with Stacks, a new way to easily access files from the Dock and major enhancements to Mail and iChat. .Mac members can use the new Back to My Mac feature to browse and access files on their home computer from a Mac over the Internet while on the road.

But still the Canadian customer gets screwed with $100 extra fee!! WTF?!! I'm so tired of this! Our dollar is at par or over the US and we have to pay $100 MORE? Yeah... we have a fair and democratic country... whatever.

Apr 28, 08 - 08:44 am Comment from: danowsb

Neat! Yeah.... that's what I think!

Apr 28, 08 - 08:44 am Comment from: Fan

I was hoping we'd see a bump on the Mini as well.. Oh well, there's always the WWDC...

Apr 28, 08 - 08:45 am Comment from: Snapper

The snappiest iMac ... ever.

Apr 28, 08 - 08:53 am Comment from: jtc

uhmm every new iMac is the snappiest ever....until it's then updated.... sucks for my friend he just bought a new iMac a week ago.

Apr 28, 08 - 08:54 am Comment from: Raymond from DC

They could have offered us real improvements in the display as well, but it looks like it's just a simple move to Penryn. There's no improvement in the 20" display technology, which I care about most, and no non-glossy option for those who want it.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:04 am Comment from: Gil

BTW, Happy 5th Birthday iTunes Store......

Apr 28, 08 - 09:07 am Comment from: jonahan

jtc I believe he can return it for the new one he has 14 days i think.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:10 am Comment from: Macaday

Canada has to pay more because they complain so much... So try the UK where we pay $500 above the US price.

Question I have, is the screen now the same in the 20" as the 24"?

Apr 28, 08 - 09:13 am Comment from: Daily Reader

And just in time for the stimulus tax rebate checks which start May 2. Coincidence???...I don't care! "The kids need one for school...really honey, they do!" smile

Apr 28, 08 - 09:14 am Comment from: Jim

Canada should go on strike.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:15 am Comment from: Harvey

You don't get the two USB ports on the keyboard unless you plug it into one of the three ports on the back of the iMac. So don't expect to plug in five devices after you've plugged in the keyboard. Only four of the five ports are available.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:17 am Comment from: @Macaday

That's the question to ask: is it the same 20" screen as before.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:23 am Comment from: Moo

Since the iMac prior to this release has MXM expansion slot video card and a socketed CPU, can the "old" aluminum iMac be upgraded with the new bits?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Apr 28, 08 - 09:23 am Comment from: Rich Apple person

Not a bad refresh but nothing to make me give up my 24" 2.8 iMac for. I expect another refresh later this year and next year a design refresh with new keyboard that includes trackpad just like the notebooks. Nice to see the improvement in video card.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:24 am Comment from: ChrisM

I wish everyone would stop wining about a non-glossy option. There is no way Apple is going to make a non-glossy iMac. It would require a redesign of the entire unit. The LCD sits behind glass, its not just some coating on the screen.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:41 am Comment from: Raymond from DC

According to the specs, the 20" shows TFT, 160 degrees of viewability, just like the last version. So it appears to be the same display technology which some of us have complained about. To me, this - more than the glossiness - is the real problem.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:43 am Comment from: Buster

@Jim
Good ideaa....Lets stop exporting maple syrup to the states....and pigs feet and seal jerky pepperettes and....all episodes of Corner gas!

That'll show'em

Hey, Steve did say we were going to get 3ghz, right? 3 years or not, I welcome it.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:57 am Comment from: MaLvado

1066 MHz frontside bus... but memory stays at 800 MHz?

I hope you can do a 3rd party switch to match the bus speed.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:58 am Comment from: OpJ

The $400 difference between 24" models is composed of:
$200 for the slightly faster CPU
$150 for the better graphics card
$50 for the larger hard drive

Each are available as BTO options on the cheaper model, so if you just want to add the 8800 for $150 to the $1799 model you can do so.

Interestingly, the Core 2 Extreme option is gone. The unsold Core 2 extreme stock is on the clearance section for $1599; if you don't want the 8800 for games, that's a pretty damned enticing option there.

Apr 28, 08 - 09:59 am Comment from: msalzberg

@eyerhyme:

The extra money probably is due to Canada's import duties, as well as the national taxes - GST and HST, which don't exist in the US. This also explains the difference between the US and the UK cost - 17.5% VAT,

Apr 28, 08 - 10:02 am Comment from: Yours Smugly

The new iMac. The snappiest all-in-one ever!™

Glossy is Good. But is the 20-incher's display now better?

Apr 28, 08 - 10:17 am Comment from: Lanzarote

I'm waiting for a new MacMini.
TOMORROW please.

Apr 28, 08 - 10:20 am Comment from: Synthmeister

It's great that they finally offer the top graphics chip as a BTO option on the 24 incher!

Wish they would offer it as a BTO option on the 20 incher as well.

Apr 28, 08 - 10:24 am Comment from: Synthmeister

Heck, I wish they would offer any kind of BTO graphics option on the Mini as well. That machine would be a lot more enticing.

Apr 28, 08 - 10:33 am Comment from: mark

What, no mini??

Please Apple, please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apr 28, 08 - 10:38 am Comment from: iamdj

What about the CHEAP displays in the 20". Did they go back to the higher quality display?

Apr 28, 08 - 10:42 am Comment from: Mark S.

Buster, can we still get "The Red Green Show?" I love that program, it's so funny.

Apr 28, 08 - 10:47 am Comment from: DogGone

The iMac going to 3GHz is pretty cool.

I still would like nothing but screen on the front. It wouldn't matter to me if the unit was a bit thicker. The only problem would be where would Apple put their logo wink

Apr 28, 08 - 11:01 am Comment from: paddler

When did Apple get sane with memory upgrade prices? To go from 2gig to 4gig is only $200.

Apr 28, 08 - 11:02 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Buster

As long as The Kids in the Hall are still in Seattle on 5/15, no one gets hurt. Don't make me come up there.

Apr 28, 08 - 11:14 am Comment from: Buster

Yup....RedGreen still exists on CBC

DuctTape forever.......

Apr 28, 08 - 11:16 am Comment from: Tommy Boy

Now could Apple please update their frickin' cinema displays?!

Apr 28, 08 - 11:18 am Comment from: Buster

Oddly enough Canada has always been a great source for comics..from Second city TV (John Cnady, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy) to Kids in the Hall.

@C1...ever see the Rick Mercer Report. He did some episodes earlier on 'Talking to Americans'.....priceless.

Apr 28, 08 - 11:42 am Comment from: wannabe

If anything Apple is likely to drop the matte option on their pro laptops within a year or so. When they do, I hope they will include a piece of steel wool in the box, so that people who insist on a "matte" display can scratch up the nice glossy surface themselves.

Apr 28, 08 - 11:56 am Comment from: Lilochris

Honestly, I think the most important thing apple should update is those Low Grade LCD's they put in the Generation iMac.

Wonder of They changed that in here?

Apr 28, 08 - 12:11 pm Comment from: matt

kind of a bummer that the 8800 isn't availble on the 20" model...

@Daily Reader

hahaha.... funny guy.

Apr 28, 08 - 01:06 pm Comment from: Pedro GarNic

How can I use multi-touch with an iMac? Is there a keyboard with an incorporated multi-touch trackpad?

Apr 28, 08 - 01:11 pm Comment from: KingMel

@ MaLvado

I recently upgraded my 24" iMac that I purchased in November to 4GB. The previous generation iMac uses 667MHz SO-DIMMs (PC-5300 notebook memory, same as the MacBook Pro), so they did increase the memory speed (to 800MHz) along with the frontside bus speed (to 1066 MHz).

I don't see anything in this incremental update that gives me buyer's remorse regarding the previous generation iMac. Apple is attempting to getter differentiate the high end 24" iMac by bundling a substantial graphics card upgrade into the mix, and not just a bit of clock speed and a larger HDD.

Still a great buy, IMO. Wonderful desktop computer.

Apr 28, 08 - 01:18 pm Comment from: LiM

The iMac is a great machine, but I'd like two swappable internal drives. Hard drives will fail, as will the iMac eventually - most probably after your AppleCare runs out.

1) When a drive fails, swap it with a new drive and sledgehammer the old drive.

2) When the Mac fails, get a new one - it's poor economics to fix an obsolete machine.

3) Recycle the old Mac and sledgehammer its original drive.

4) If you plan to burn a lot of dvds, use a good quality external burner and save the super drive for more mundane tasks.

Those are my new rules for post OS 8 Macs (all my pre OS 9 Macs still work; all my post OS 8 Macs failed after three years).

Your mileage might vary.

Apr 28, 08 - 01:49 pm Comment from: O!44Port

As O!44Port is a Canadian, she wrote the CEO to suggest prices closer to parity. Apple listened, and cut the price spread substantially on hardware. A price spread of $100 on hardware is not unreasonable in light of currency risks and the need to have bilingual operations to suit the language fascists. (Yesterday the PQ announced they were going to require small business to follow an enhanced Bill 101 and make them comply with their compulsory francization program, which is why fascist is not a strong word to describe the PQ leader et al). And, Apple reduced the software cost and the dot Mac cost to Canadians to parity. Within a month of O!44Port's letter.

You carazy Canukian you!

NAFTA... North American Free Trade Agreement ? R u sure canada has to pay import taxes ?

And GST / PST are not included in the prices so it doesn't make a difference

Apr 28, 08 - 03:09 pm Comment from: Big Cup of STFU

Glare from the iMac will likely be a problem in an office situation. But...

Most iMacs are used in a home office/bedroom/familyroom situation — these rooms typically don't suffer from florescent lighting. The gloss screen actually is beneficial.

In my setup, it looks brilliant. Every bit as crisp as a CRT. YMMV. Whatevahhh.

I'm off to lunch — a nuked enchilada that's as hot as the sun.
