Apple upgrades plug casing on premium in-ear headphones
Tuesday, July 14, 2009 - 01:20 PM EST

"Apple has discretely updated its premium In-Ear Headphones, replacing the rubber 3.5 mm headphone plug casing with a hard plastic one, perhaps in an attempt to fix cord protectors that users complained came easily unfastened," Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

"The change, spotted at the Christian Science Monitor Horizons Blog, makes the new headphone plug look like the Mag-Safe power adapter employed on MacBooks," Hughes reports.

"Though the $79 headphones, launched in December of 2008, received generally positive reviews, users peppered the upgrade with a myriad of complaints, including issues with the rubber plug protector coming loose," Hughes reports.

Never had a problem with the plug. The rubber strain relief portion that extends from the buds cracked and broke on both sides, ultimately allowing a wire failure that killed my set. Still a pretty good set of buds at $79.00

Despite the rubber plug casing, I really wanted to like these in-ears..

They had great clarity in the highs and mids, but they completely lacked any bottom end.. In fact, the bottom end on the included ear buds is much better than on the in ears.. Couldn't justify paying $79 for everything to sound like am radio..

I updated MY plug casing... if you are pickin' up what I am layin' down. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

The earphones that came with my iPhone 3GS have the same plug.

The thing i don't like is that since the finish is glossy and not rubbery, sometimes you have to pull the cable to unplug them. I'm waiting for people to start damaging the cables and then complain the new design is faulty.

Disagree. I think the new in-ears sond great in basses: they certainly don't sound unnaturally heavy and boomy, (while many others do, including apple's standard ear buds) but they sound "natural" IMHO. I don't know if that's your case, but I know that many people actually like unnatural basses, thus they don't like apple's in-ear headphone.

I wanted to like these earphones also. Mine started controlling my music by itself. It would pause the music, fast forward it and after a while lock up my iPhone to a point were I would have to restart it. This is all within thirty days of purchase. I returned them for a pair of Sennheiser CX-380s. I have had these earphones for over seven months, which I workout with them daily and I have had zero issues.

@Gi,

No, I'm not looking for un-natural or even emphasized bass with an in-ear.. But the Apple in ears are not natural, they are unbalanced and light..

As a pro musician, I know for a fact this is the case as I test my mixes from plenty of reference points.. The Apple in-ears are definitely bass light and do not represent a true balance.

But like I said, the highs and mids are very nice for in ear cans at this price point..

For my ear they sounded like the original iPhone earbuds pressed slightly in with fingers = more bass. What they were lacking mostly were the highs, compared to Etymotic ER6i models. Anyway, in China you can't walk around without in-ears, it's just too noisy, and the locally available models suck. Good thing BestBuy lets you compare pretty much all of them.

It looks like a design aesthetic change to me. It flows better. Reflects the texture transition at the ear piece.

Another pathetic example of catachreses from people who earn their living with words. "discretely" should be "discreetly", "a myriad of" should simply be "myriad"

They've had this new design for about 4 months. I had the previous design with the rubber casing, and it failed. Thus I got replacements - which have the new, hard plastic design. Much better I think. Sounds quality is amazing as always - and controls on the wire are brilliant.
