Apple ups Mac mini speeds, all models now feature Core Duo processors, prices unchanged

Along with new iMac models (see related article), Apple today also increased processor speeds on both models of the Mac mini, delivering dual-core performance across the line at no additional cost. The $799 model now includes a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, and the $599 model now includes a 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from a 1.5 GHz Intel Core Solo processor.

The new Mac mini models are here.

  1. From ‘Useless’: No-one will buy these; people want laptops”.

I totally disagree – I choose a Mac Mini alongside an Apple Cinema display because I didn’t want the integrated computer/monitor offering of the iMac.

In the absence of a ‘midi’ Mac tower I’ll continue to favour a Mini over an iMac – or laptop, for that matter.

  2. Lets hope these release today dont mean that on Sept 12th Steve is only going to talk about a movie service from itunes. That launch is definetly not enough. They had to release this stuff today and get it out of the way either because there is way more cool stuff to go over on Sept 12th or Steve is really sick and cant stay up there and talk about more then a new iTMS…..lets all hope for tons of new products.!!

  3. They might have decided to release this early due to all the (correct) speculation, allowing the event to be focussed on the bigger news rather than product updates and larger versions of existing products.

Downloadable movies and either new iPods or new under-TV based gadget are the most likely contenders for the Sept 12th announcement. The product announcements today can only add to the excitement of what is coming on the 12th.

  4. You can get an iMac for $999- why spend $200 less and get the mini(lump)mac?
Every time I go into the Apple store and ponder the minimac trying to convince myself why I would need one. Just can´t figure out why, when Apple has so many other nice computers, one would opt for the minimac.

  5. Is it worth an extra $200 for the 1.83 over the 1.66, and extra 20GB of disk and a superdrive?
I have an external disk and DVD burner already, so the only thing ‘extra’ I would be getting is the slight bump in CPU.

Those who have a core duo (1.66GHz) mini, are you happy with performance for everyday life, or do you feel like you could do with a little extra power ?

  6. There is no way that Apple could have used, in a sound business sense, a Core 2 Duo in the Minis. The Minis should – and will — be the last models to get the new chips, otherwise the buyers of the higher priced models would revolt.

But when the Mini is upgraded to Core 2, I hope Apple increases the height of the Mini and switches to a 3.5 inch desktop drive. That would make for higher speed, higher capacity and much lower cost. They should go Merom to increase the quantity buys of that chip to get lower prices from Intel and to reduce the power consumption. I would love to see a $499 price for the low end model.

  7. The Mac Mini is not going to be the best choice of Macs when when a new “system” is in order, but it still serves a purpose–mostly for PC switchers.

    1. Most PC users just can’t accept the idea of “all in one” computers like the iMac.
    2. Most PC users have existing separate displays and keyboards; the mini removes the resistance of having to buy new components.
    3. The mini can serve as a pretty decent headless server; both file and media.
    4. The mini can be used where other Macs are not appropriate: Kitchens, bathrooms, kiosks.

There are lot’s of reasons for the mini, and that’s why you see Apple updating them instead of killing them. And this Apple is too savvy these days to keep around a product that wasn’t selling or had no future.
