Apple video shows 80GB iPhone: slip up or proof of massive future storage upgrade?
Tuesday, June 26, 2007 - 10:27 AM EST

Watch the iPhone Activation & Sync video on Apple.com:

http://www.apple.com/iphone/usingiphone/activation.html

After the video's host selects all his playlists, Music, Vidos, Podcasts, etc and Syncs his phone he shows the Used and Available Space on the iPhone which shows 80GB of iPhone storage space. The host states, "This bar at the bottom [of iTunes] shows you how much room you have left on you iPhone..."

Is this is a simple mistake or is there an 80GB iPhone lurking about deep inside Apple?

80GB would mean a hard-drive based iPhone. I doubt we'll see one of those.

Editing slip-up.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:32 am Comment from: JadisOne

I hope it's a future upgrade, but it's more than likely a snafu.

Steve, ever the master showman!! Why do I think that this was planned??? LOL grin

MDN word develop as in Lets see what develop s.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:33 am Comment from: Sum Jung Gai

Big deal, my beta iPhone has 80 GB. You can hotswap the flash ROM for a 1" disk drive. I thought everybody knew that.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:35 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

!!!

If this really is One More Thing, I think we're in for a crazy weekend.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:36 am Comment from: bruce

This is Steve's iPhone.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:37 am Comment from: ha

While this could be a HD based model that Apple uses internally, I would guess that commercial iPhones will have flash memory.

"80GB would mean a hard-drive based iPhone. I doubt we'll see one of those"

Exactly, unless they've got some VooDoo flash memory that we don't know about. And a HD based iPhone would never get the kind of battery life they're talking about. If this is a mistake they'd better damn well fix it before the word gets out.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:38 am Comment from: cptnkirk

I think that someone inadvertantly put in a shot of an iPod screen instead of the iPhone screen. It's a mistake for which someone's head may roll since it could potentially cannibalize the market for the current offerings.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:39 am Comment from: Twisted Mac Freak

Of course it's real.
But they had to cut out the software upgrade progress bar screen shot that said it had 2,574,382,456 minutes remaining.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:40 am Comment from: Falkirk

@Bruce: his is Steve's iPhone.

LOL

Jun 26, 07 - 09:47 am Comment from: Jonahan

Umm ... take a look at the vid again .. it says 7.27GB in the Phone info even though it still shows that graphic on the bottom. Bug or photoshopped from an 80GB iPod.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:47 am Comment from: Gman

better download the video while you can..my guess is that within the next few hours it will updated and a new version will be posted..minus the slipup.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:48 am Comment from: Apple worker

sorry to burst your bubble people,

it was a typo, we meant to display megabytes

Jun 26, 07 - 09:52 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Apple worker

So it's an 80 MEGABYTE iPhone? Uh, yeah. No.

Jun 26, 07 - 09:55 am Comment from: rageous

The same screen that shows this also zooms out to show that at the top the iPhone reads as having a capacity of 8GB. Editing error. Nothing more...

Jun 26, 07 - 10:06 am Comment from: January 24, 1984

More surprises coming.......

Jun 26, 07 - 10:09 am Comment from: 88mph

In either case... Digg IT!!!!

That's what people said about the 12th icon. That it was a mistake.

Jun 26, 07 - 10:18 am Comment from: 88mph

11:15 Eastern... Its still up... I'm sure Apple would have pulled this if it was incorrect. In any case...great way to generate some additional buzz...

Jun 26, 07 - 10:19 am Comment from: Richard Lomas

I think they were using an 80GB iPod so that they could make it look like you can sync all your "music, tv shows, movies, podcasts, etc.." with no worries...

What will REALLY happen with the iPhone is that you'll be constantly choosing to have "a few playlists of songs, 6 podcasts and 1 movie" on there at any given time due to the limited storage..

The "that all doesn't fit on your iPhone" error message wouldn't have looked good in the demo video...

; )

Jun 26, 07 - 10:24 am Comment from: alansky

Anyone else notice that the 25-minute iPhone video tour host clearly stated the iPhone offers "16 applications," although there are currently only 12 application icons on the Home screen?

Jun 26, 07 - 10:24 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

I just downloaded a new copy of the video and it's still there.

If it is a mistake, has NO ONE at Apple seen it yet?

Jun 26, 07 - 10:25 am Comment from: Marc A.

If true, this would be awesome!

The only reason I'm NOT getting an iPhone is that I still would have to carry around my 80GB iPod. I got too much music, kids!

Plus, you can't use the iPod on the iPhone if you discontinue your ATT contract. -- THAT'S BS!

Jun 26, 07 - 10:25 am Comment from: andy

i was watching it and i saw the same thing..80 gb thats cool

Jun 26, 07 - 10:27 am Comment from: Basty

@ Apple Worker

I'd love to see the ad for that one:

You can now hold:
30 Songs
50 Photos
1 TV Show
.3 Movies

And it even makes phone calls.

Jun 26, 07 - 10:28 am Comment from: HoofHearted?

ChrissyOne did!

Jun 26, 07 - 10:35 am Comment from: whatever

The plan didn't match the options listed either. Why did he select 1500 SMS for 20 dollars and 900 minutes

Jun 26, 07 - 10:36 am Comment from: Glor

I wonder if there is a hidden feature in the iPhone that allows one to connect a iPod to it for additional storage.

Apple is in fact introducing a 40G and a 80G iPhone! I think they forgot to take that out...but now that cat is out of the bag. Just wait and see...you'll see that Apple will announce today or tomorrow.

I don't think it was a typo, otherwise, only the capacity would read 74.40G while the rest of the numbers would NOT add to 74.40 G BUT THEY DO!!! It's understandable to make one error but to make the "video, audio, other, and free space" capacities all add up to 74.40G....I don't think so!

Jun 26, 07 - 10:46 am Comment from: GranitW

Maybe it's a surprise and the iPhones will be 40 and 80 gigs when they come out. That would be so awesome!!

Jun 26, 07 - 10:51 am Comment from: No Squirt For You

"Maybe it's a surprise . . ."

And maybe it has ZFS, GPS, the latest 3G, 3D video iChat and tricorder functions!

(As long as we're fantasizing!)

Didn't Samsung just announce a 64GB Flash-based Solid State Drive? Hmmm.

Jun 26, 07 - 11:03 am Comment from: nukeman

@alansky

Yup, I noticed that as well. I think that includes the 4 icons at the bottom, namely the four main apps.

Jun 26, 07 - 11:08 am Comment from: DG

Before the sync the numbers look correct (though small and harder to read).

Jun 26, 07 - 11:09 am Comment from: iMat

OMFG?!

Did any of u even watch that film?

He is comparing the iPhone to the 80GB iPod, when showing u how to sync movies. If u look at the top it still says 8GB iPhone with 1.0 software. Nothing special at all!!!

The iPhone syndrome sure as hell has hit hard this year!

Jun 26, 07 - 11:16 am Comment from: Priused

It was a simple editing mistake. The development iPhones have an 80 gig hard drive in them, but they are not the same as the production machines. It is nice to know that someday we may actually have 80 GB iPhones, but I doubt that it will happen on the first generation.

Jun 26, 07 - 11:20 am Comment from: Jonahan

Alanski: i thought about that too but then you're forgetting about Phone/Mail/Safari/iPod .. the bottom 4 which makes ... *drumroll* 16.

Jun 26, 07 - 11:21 am Comment from: Georgy Porgy

"40 and 80 gigs"
Super nice dream, but that would directly end any sale of any current iPod out there. That would be cannabalism suicide and end a product, not add a product.

Jun 26, 07 - 11:25 am Comment from: Newmanstein

The stock price currently just shows the fickleness and radical expectations of the PC sheep type investors out there with no faith.

Jun 26, 07 - 11:37 am Comment from: Mr. Reeee

80GB iPhone would be perfect! I'd buy one and never use the phone.

Jun 26, 07 - 11:56 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

9:55 Pacific - Downloaded another copy of the video, same numbers.

Jun 26, 07 - 11:58 am Comment from: Sum Jung Gai

Georgy Porgy,it's only called cannibalism if the new product has a lower contribution margin than the replaced product. I don't think we have enough information to definitively state that iPhone has a lower contribution margin than iPod. Calling it "cannabalism suicide" is overstating the case. By the way, it's cannibalism... are you confusing cannibals with cannabis?

Jun 26, 07 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Freddy the Pig

Yeah, right. Lets see how intelligent this blog post is. Apple Inc. The people who bring us the iPhone. The ones who researched and built the damn thing right under our noses without our ever knowing anything about it. They come along now, just three days before the launch and commit a sophmoric mistake of putting an iPhone with an 80 gig HD into the demo so we all can cream our pants.

NOT!
Get a life!

Jun 26, 07 - 12:05 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

Mmmmm... cannabis.

Jun 26, 07 - 12:08 pm Comment from: joevanwyk

I see the regular plans now, but what about WIFI?

Do your order that through ATT?

To get a T-mobile Hotspot account costs a fortune.

Anyone have the skinny on this?

Jun 26, 07 - 12:13 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

You don't 'order' WiFi. It's a capability of the phone, and it's your option to find an open network.

Jun 26, 07 - 12:21 pm Comment from: Macedsince84

Maybe there is more storage on an idisk which is why you need to have an apple ID.

Jun 26, 07 - 01:05 pm Comment from: THX

Well there are slim 32Gb SSD's now & 65Gb SSD's ffrom Samsung also Sandisk & other's I saw something on 80Gb SSD, but forgot where!

http://www.electronista.com/articles/07/06/25/samsung.64gb.ssd.ships/

Jun 26, 07 - 02:05 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

12:03 Pacific - New copy of the video shows the following numbers:

Capacity: 7.24 GB
Audio: 2.56
Video: 1.39
Other: 1.25
Free Space: 2.04

Sorry kids, no bonus round!

Jun 26, 07 - 02:42 pm Comment from: ken1w

It was an error (now corrected), but I don't think it was a "mistake." It's all part of the Jobs plan to maximize the media "buzz."
