Apple working on next-gen iPhone with customized multi-core chips?
Thursday, February 05, 2009 - 10:23 AM EST

Apple Online Store"By now it’s an accepted fact that Apple has loosed a fleet of unannounced iPhones for real-world testing. And, true to Apple’s usually secretive ways, the new “iPhone 2,1” feature-set is still a mystery. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate on what Apple has in store for the iPhone-loving world," Will Park writes for IntoMobile.

"While the iPhone 2,1 might simply be an iPhone Nano intended to appeal to the lower-end market, we may soon see a next-generation iPhone hitting market with multi-core silicon and upgraded feature-sets in tow," Park writes.

"Apple wants to incorporate multi-core functionality into future iPhone chips. And, the only way to ensure that future processors will meet Apple’s exacting standards was to buy their own chip-design firm and crank out their own chips. Customized chips would also help differentiate the iPhone lineup from most other mobile phones on market," Park writes.

"It’s not a question of if Apple will launch a multi-core iPhone, but when Apple will unveil their multi-core iPhone with advanced graphics performance," Park writes.

Forget the rumors, I'm getting an iPhone in the coming weeks. I'll upgrade when it comes out.

Feb 05, 09 - 10:30 am Comment from: M.X.N.T.4.1.

Any new one will likely replace the existing iPhone 3G with improved specs at probably the same price point. The only "iPhone Nano" I see there being is the current iPhone reduced in price, and perhaps only sold in the smallest capacity to avoid cannibalising sales of the higher priced model.

I can't see an iPhone Nano, the power of iPhone is in the consistency of a platform. A dramatically reduced screen size would be detrimental

Feb 05, 09 - 11:08 am Comment from: Cascadians

I'm waiting for the iTablet precisely because the iPhone's screen is too small for my aging eyes.
Boomer demographics = go bigger.

Feb 05, 09 - 11:21 am Comment from: MacTony

Well, I'm not buying crap until that iTouch with phone capabilities comes out.....LOL

Feb 05, 09 - 11:32 am Comment from: jltnol

it's not the cost of the phone that's the problem.. it's the $75-80 a month phone bill from AT&T;that's the problem.

Unless AT&T;can downsize the monthly fees, it's still going to be to $$ for most Wal-Mart types.

Feb 05, 09 - 11:45 am Comment from: Steve516

the iPhone already has the fastest processor of any smart phone. and dual cores make a lot of heat... I dunno....

Feb 05, 09 - 11:47 am Comment from: IndyMac

I agree with jltnol. The problem to solve is not the size or cost of the iPhone, it’s the cost of the service. With AT&T;being the exclusive provider, they will (rightfully) charge whatever the market will bear. If Apple were to provide the iPhone to other carriers, prices would naturally drop due to the competitive forces of the market. Apple market share would skyrocket along with it’s profits.

iphone nano ... Very unlikely
more likely iPhone stays and lower price
and introduce iPhone Pro.

but none of these will really happen, iPhone will stay iPhone, because it is the Apple phone. As simple as that.

I believe an iTablet is coming, and I will welcome it. It will be a nice intermediate addition to my iPhone and my MacBook Pro. Of course I take my iPhone everywhere, and I love it, but its screen is too small to do many things. I can lug my MBP to meetings, but it's to unwieldy to take to job sites. An iTablet would be just perfect for when an iPhone isn't enough and a laptop is too much.

Feb 05, 09 - 12:53 pm Comment from: JBIRD

I agree with "@Macado" about an iTablet on its way and I have the same problem were a NB is too much but iPhone not enough
..
and with @Cascadian as for me the iPhone screen is becoming more and more difficult to read as my eyes age...

Feb 05, 09 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Wal-Mart shopper

Yes indeed, I would have bought an iPhone months ago if a voice-only plan were available.

Save money. Live better.

Feb 05, 09 - 01:08 pm Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

Can we get away from saying 'price point?' Of course it's a point-that's what a price is! John Dean is responsible for bringing the redundant phrase 'that point in time' to mean 'at that time.'

Let's do away with redudancy redundancy!

IndyMac: "If Apple were to provide the iPhone to other carriers, prices would naturally drop due to the competitive forces of the market. Apple market share would skyrocket along with it’s profits."

You meant to say that if Apple sold to other carriers that the iPhone subsidy would vanish, and Apple would lose money on every unit sold.

Feb 05, 09 - 01:09 pm Comment from: twilightmoon

@Arnold Ziffel

Thanks for pointing that out!

Feb 05, 09 - 01:30 pm Comment from: Gary

Like every other mass produced product, the goal is cost reduction to increase margin. Apple is developing a lower cost phone with similar features to reduce their cost to increase margin.

Feb 05, 09 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Grrrilla

Are multi-core processors going to offer higher performance at that size factor than a single-core processor? Is processor speed even an issue in phones, given the level of apps you can run on a screen that size? I agree with other posters - more to be gained by lowering the price and extending battery life and memory size than increasing processor power.

Now, if they could make the whole unit smaller without sacrificing screen size or battery life, that would also be a notable improvement.

After seeing the new Toshiba phone, I hope the next iPhone is just as thin. Not that I would ever change to Windows Mobile. I'll just be bummed with the thick iPhone.

Feb 05, 09 - 04:01 pm Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

@twilightmoon,

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Feb 06, 09 - 02:05 am Comment from: Wingsy

I was starting to think that everyone had forgotten about P.A. Semi.

Those new chips have been in the oven long enough... time to release them on the unsuspecting competitors (and US).
