Apple’s App Store makes me want to cry
Thursday, July 10, 2008 - 03:50 PM EDT

By SteveJack

I've been a good little boy. No "jailbreaking" for me (much).

So, the launch of Apple's App Store today was a revelation and a major gift, to say the least. Seriously, I'm this close to crying tears of joy. There are just so many apps that are really useful for free or very little cost!

My iPhone already shamed any other "smartphone" out there; now it makes them want to just shrivel up and die. Which they will soon enough. Some of them are already deep into "hurry up and die" mode.

So far - and this will be a different list for everybody, that's the best part - I've downloaded and played around with the following on my first-generation iPhone which I will be using for the next 16 hours until I get my iPhone 3G (apps are free unless otherwise noted):

• MLB.com At Bat (cost me US$4.99 and worth every damn penny!)
• AOL Radio
Shazam
• Pandora
Remote
Super Monkey Ball ($9.99, had to do it)
Mobile News Network - Associated Press
• NewNewsWire
Enigmo ($9.99)
WeatherBug
Jott for iPhone
Where
iBeer ($2.99, don't you judge me)
• SportsTap
Whrrl
YellowPages Mobile...

Aww, forget it. The list goes on. I gotta go, there's just too much to see and download and test!!!

Oh, yeah: Tetris for $14.99? EA, you're killing me. I'm going to hold off on that one for as long as possible...

Tell me about your favorite iPhone/iPod touch apps below!

Went on the New Zealand i-Tunes and looked over the apps. Looks like I will be spending about $30 this weekend!

Jul 10, 08 - 03:55 pm Comment from: Maconymous

I spent $50 bucks on apps today already, but even with so many great apps available, one big disappointment for me was the lack of a great Financial Management app. Would've paid up to $20 for something similar to Money or Quicken that I can track account balances and expenses with. The ones currently up just cover budgets or certain expenses, but are not a complete banking tool. Soon, I hope!

Someone tell me about Ms. Pac Man. Wife is out with the iPhone, that will be the first game I get. Looks like you can control her with the accelerometer or touchpad on the lower screen.

TELL ME!!!!!!

Yup. Lots of great stuff there. I'm in heaven.

Jul 10, 08 - 03:56 pm Comment from: MadMac

Apple has developed THE hottest Texas HoldEm game ever! Live action real video players. I am blown away.

With reviews like that, check RIM stock sinking.

Jul 10, 08 - 04:08 pm Comment from: KenC

Bejeweled 2 is really slick.

Jul 10, 08 - 04:37 pm Comment from: nekogami13

Remote seems cool, but have no use for it.
They have a dictionary app which I need(Damn report writing!)-everything else is gravy.

"Would've paid up to $20 for something similar to Money or Quicken that I can track account balances and expenses with."

You mean 72 tip calculators aren't good enough....what a whiner.

Jul 10, 08 - 04:41 pm Comment from: tc60045

You can share an iTunes song on up to 5 computers.

Can you share an iTunes App on more than one iPhone?

Jul 10, 08 - 04:42 pm Comment from: Spark

Got my 2.0 software installed and installed it on my 8GB first gen iPhone. Went to App Store. Realized I'm going to need a bigger boat.

Jul 10, 08 - 04:46 pm Comment from: halhiker

Remote is AWESOME. I can now use it to control my stereo in my living room with the tunes on my computer via AirTunes.

Also Shazam is ultra cool. I was in Trader Joes today and they were playing a tune on the store sound system. I just launched the app, it told me the title, the artist and the album with the album cover. Amazing.

And, yes, $14.99 for Tetris is incredible. I would buy it for $4.99 but not a penny more.

Jul 10, 08 - 04:47 pm Comment from: Mayonymous @ Quad

Exactly my point. I wonder why Apple allowed for this to happen (multiple apps of pretty much the same thing), since they control all apps that are posted in the App Store. Up to three different versions of one product are alright with me, but the number of Tip Calculators now up is ridiculous.

BTW, The App Store now appears on iTunes' main page. There's also a new Privacy Statement you have to accept before downloading apps.

Please check out our iEnvision software, which shows really well on the iPhone. Comics, manga, children's books, newspaper front pages... http://we-envision.com. Thanks.

SteveJack:

How much memory did all those programs consume? Give us an idea of proportions. Thanks.

Jul 10, 08 - 05:09 pm Comment from: iMatt

Why despair over the number of tip calculators?

It's great to have a choice in software. (I choose to do the math in my head). Plus, as the App Store is used more and more, the reviews and the number of downloads will reveal which of the choices are best.

I'd love to see a good financial program too, but I'm not surprised that one hasn't been put together in time for the App Store's debut. But I won't lay all the blame on the poor tip calculators!

Jul 10, 08 - 05:17 pm Comment from: Mymac4ever

Theres two apps that somehow turns your iPhone/iPod Touch into a flashlight. Only one of them is free though...

Jul 10, 08 - 05:22 pm Comment from: Uh Oh

Where are the porn apps?

Jul 10, 08 - 05:32 pm Comment from: Mr. Peabody

Bye bye PDA/Smartphone; Hello hand held computer.

Jul 10, 08 - 05:33 pm Comment from: HueyLong

dotmac [or 'me.com' if you must] is still down... it's been down all day now. What gives?

Jul 10, 08 - 05:36 pm Comment from: THE.MAC.GOD

@MaLvado

Seconded... even with crappy speakers and barely 4 seconds of sample audio, it knew.

It knew.

Skynet... Originally "Shazam".

Jul 10, 08 - 05:40 pm Comment from: already

"Please check out our [snip snip], which shows really well on the iPhone...."

what,... the App Store has only been open a few hours and forum and blog comments are already getting spammed by no-name developers looking for free hits? it's not just here, I've already seen it elsewhere

sheesh!

Jul 10, 08 - 05:44 pm Comment from: JAYGEE

Some sad people out there!

Jul 10, 08 - 05:51 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

@ Maconymous

Patients, the store is only an hour or so old. Give the rest of the world a little time to write the real quality stuff.

If you build it (Apple just did) they will come (er, write)

@ THE.MAC.GOD

Wow, and I thought I had a cool name! grin

Jul 10, 08 - 05:55 pm Comment from: bc

I see SplashID is on the App Store - we'll that's the only old Palm app that I can't live without, so I guess it's officially goodbye to my Treo! yay!

and Netnewswire is there too (free).

I only worry that it's soon going to be hard to pick out the gems from the cruft when browsing the store - maybe only a problem in the early days until things settle down and reviews come out

Jul 10, 08 - 05:58 pm Comment from: JD3

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that there is like 5 different flashlight apps and only one of them is free. Who in the world would pay .99 for an app that display's a white screen!

Jul 10, 08 - 05:59 pm Comment from: Jesus

Please Apple.. let me update my iTouch.. this is killing me..

Jul 10, 08 - 06:05 pm Comment from: ken1w

I think iTunes will be pulling in more revenue for the App Store than it does for selling and renting videos (very soon).

Jul 10, 08 - 06:12 pm Comment from: drcaddy

I AM bothered by the amount of flashlight apps that cost money! I mean, I need at LEAST four of them to illuminate different parts of my house at varied brightness levels. One free app just isn't enough. FASCISTS.

Jul 10, 08 - 06:13 pm Comment from: Jim - TIV

ok... best use of Remote so far.

I'm laying in my hammock, in the backyard, drinking an arnold palmer, controlling my itunes library and playing music into my outdoor speakers.

Nice..... very nice.

Jul 10, 08 - 06:34 pm Comment from: shen

holy.... has the official 2.0 software come out yet?

Jul 10, 08 - 06:48 pm Comment from: phantasmosxmagnum

Screw Skype! I'm ready for iCall! http://icall.com/iphone/
We are part of the Apple iPhone developer program
iCall features:
Make and receive calls over WiFi
Transfer inbound calls from a regular cell call to WiFi instantly and seamlessly - save your expensive minutes
Access your same address book
Customize your voicemail options
Apple is testing us and holding back thousands of other Apps! The flood gates will probably open tomorrow or in the next several weeks as they get the best or the most unique out first. :D

Jul 10, 08 - 07:01 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

The App store has a section for "New" applications.

I think that's funny!

further to Jim TIV's comment:
"ok... best use of Remote so far.

now, Airport Express and AirTunes is more useful, don't have to be anywhere near my Mac

Jul 10, 08 - 07:04 pm Comment from: It's Not A Tumor

"I'm laying in my hammock, in the backyard, drinking an arnold palmer, controlling my itunes library and playing music into my outdoor speakers."

Eight more drinks then stick the iPhone down your pants and touch navigate to Idina Menzel. That's a barn raising.

Jul 10, 08 - 07:07 pm Comment from: Maconymous

Just checked out the new iCal. Apple screwed up on this one. While the calendar now finally has colors for the different calendars on iPhone, they don't match what I have in iCal on the Mac.

Jul 10, 08 - 07:42 pm Comment from: Bunsen Honeydew

Does anyone KNOW (no guesses or assumptions) if the AIM client uses SMSs for chats? What i'm saying is, can you chat in AIM without being charged a text?

I would think so, I just am a little weary of ATT and their greed. And quite excited I will no longer have to deal with BeeJive.

Jul 10, 08 - 07:49 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

This is the birth of a new PLATFORM! Can't wait to get mine!

I'm glad that OmniGroup has OmniFocus for iPhone. NOW I can finally retire my Palm TX and Brainforest, which I live by.

Jul 10, 08 - 08:48 pm Comment from: smegdude

aim client is internet based only, no sms used at all
