Apple’s Fortune: What to expect from Steve Jobs on June 9th
Friday, May 23, 2008 - 11:19 AM EST

"Thursday was a red-letter day for 3G iPhone rumors. On Wall St., the 'rumor of a rumor' of an iPhone delay was enough to drive Apple (AAPL) share prices down about 5 points in midafternoon trading," Philip Elmer-DeWitt blogs for Fortune. "Meanwhile, a dozen subway stops to the north, a line 60 customers deep had formed spontaneously outside the company’s flagship Fifth Avenue store. According to Engadget, at least some of the people in the queue thought the new iPhone had already arrived."

Elmer-DeWitt writes, "So it was refreshing to receive a note to clients from Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster on Friday morning with some sensible advice about what to expect when Steve Jobs takes the stage at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference on June 9."

According to Munster, look for:
• Next-gen iPhone
• iPhone 2.0 software
• Focus on Mac and iPhone integration
• New MacBooks

Elmer-DeWitt writes, "Munster believes that Apple is planning a worldwide release of the new phones in mid-June."

New iPhone will be nice whenever it comes out. I've been waiting.

May 23, 08 - 10:23 am Comment from: macoverdose_dot_com

I love that a rumor of a rumor can make such a big impact... morons

May 23, 08 - 10:26 am Comment from: Yimmie

If Apple unveils a new iPhone at WWDC it will be well into the fall before it's available so those folks waiting in line will be there for quite a while.

May 23, 08 - 10:33 am Comment from: Jubei

How can we speed up time? I want June 9 now. grin

May 23, 08 - 10:36 am Comment from: What Steve will give us on June 9th.

Two things:

Jack

Shit.

That's all.

May 23, 08 - 10:37 am Comment from: UM

I thought apple tanked along with the rest of the market due to oil surging past $135....

May 23, 08 - 10:40 am Comment from: Ampar

Expect a well-rehearsed and very polished Keynote presentation in front of a sold out auditorium.

May 23, 08 - 10:41 am Comment from: YoYo

iMovie '08 will be updated to 8.0 and finally becomes useable.

May 23, 08 - 10:47 am Comment from: Ampar

iMovie '08 7.2 will probably come first.

May 23, 08 - 10:55 am Comment from: MizuInOz

Ampar you must be physic... you could give John Edwards a run for his money...

wink

Please folks remember that WWDC is a "developers" conference with two bridges this year... so there must be two presentations unless one is a bridge too far.

raspberry

Cheers!

May 23, 08 - 10:58 am Comment from: Blue Dream

Apple could announce cordless AC/DC current on June 9th and
the stock will still tank regardless.
The pundits already have a basket of multiple negative headlines to choose from...no iChat, no internal GPS, no 3g in North Dakota, no replaceable battery, no back scratcher, nose and bellybutton picker, no colors, etc...

May 23, 08 - 10:58 am Comment from: Ampar

If Richard Attenborough walks on stage, you'll have your answer.

May 23, 08 - 11:04 am Comment from: MacSheikh

Aaarrrggghhh!!! I can't stand all this waiting, been waiting since the iPhone first came out. Start selling it worldwide already will you Steve? I got some cash waiting here to exchange for my very own iPhone! grin

May 23, 08 - 11:09 am Comment from: MacSheikh

@ Blue Dream

You missed out Soap Dispenser and Personal Vibrator.

May 23, 08 - 11:10 am Comment from: Ampar

"You missed out Soap Dispenser and Personal Vibrator."

Combine the two and save valuable time.

May 23, 08 - 11:29 am Comment from: Jim Klaas

I don't have any idea what Steve release on June 9th, but I know whatever it is, ***I want one***

May 23, 08 - 11:34 am Comment from: Viktor

I think potential shares buyers spread those rumors just a few days before the great releases so they can buy shares at a more lower prices.

May 23, 08 - 11:38 am Comment from: critic

@yimmie

It better be available before "well into the fall" as you can't find an iPhone at retail, at least in NYC. I have a friend in from overseas this week who has been shopping.

May 23, 08 - 11:44 am Comment from: Cubert

I heard a rumor that there was a rumor of more rumors coming.

May 23, 08 - 11:49 am Comment from: ../.

I am surprised that no one included "The Next Big Cat" on the list of guesses. Sure, iPhone and iPhone SDK are the big talk right now, but Apple is still a computer company and they already released Leopard 7 months ago. Apple must have worked on Mac OS X 10.6 already. While the details won't be disclosed as always, Apple should clue in the developers of what to expect for their next feline and WWDC is a perfect place for that.

May 23, 08 - 11:50 am Comment from: olias

That's what I like about Gene Munster his shrewdness

• Next-gen iPhone
• iPhone 2.0 software
• Focus on Mac and iPhone integration
• New MacBooks
Munster believes that Apple is planning a worldwide release of the new phones in mid-June."

Wow we would never have guessed that. Hmm let's see was there a clue that every telecom operator on the planet has signed up a deal and spilt the beans already.

Munster - You were last with what is common knowledge

what about the mini????

May 23, 08 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Macromancer

Two things to expect:

"Boom"
"Isn't that amazing?"

May 23, 08 - 12:19 pm Comment from: Mac+

"what about the mini????"

The Mac Mini is poised to disappear.

May 23, 08 - 01:39 pm Comment from: jtc

I didn't like how I watched stock drop $7 a share this week in one day... I really like when it went up to 191... I look forward to it going past 200. Though I believe it will be tough to predict once it hits 200... lots of people will sell to make back what they bought into last year at 200 in fear it will drop. I see if it passes 210 all will be good. :D A 2:1 split would be nice... a 3:1 would be very much appreciated too

May 23, 08 - 02:07 pm Comment from: Mac-nugget

I hope they open the Bluetooth to 3rd parties. It would be great to be able to tie my current iPhone to my Tomtom to get weather and traffic.

May 23, 08 - 02:11 pm Comment from: makemineamac

I don't think the Mini will disappear. People have said that a few times before and it hasn't happened. That little machine's got heart, and it has proven over the last few years to be a perfect pvr for me.

I do wish they would market it a little better though, it would be a great starter for switchers, or a replacement for a PC for parents, grandparents and so on that already have a monitor and computer.

For someone that doesn't need a lot of horsepower the Mini still rocks....

May 23, 08 - 02:16 pm Comment from: Macs King

You don't make money on stock until you sell it. Big fund managers are always looking for excuses (I mean opportunities) to sell and force the price lower. Then the lemmings sell and the big guys buy back in. It's high stakes gambling at its best.

Even a cheesy rumor about a rumor is good enough for big players to sell it short.

May 23, 08 - 02:41 pm Comment from: DogGone

The iPhone is still unavailable from the Apple online store. It's been a week now. That must mean they are emptying the channel.

May 23, 08 - 03:07 pm Comment from: ChrisW357

@ Yimmie - How exactly do you know for sure? I don't know what's up Apple's sleeves, but I hardly think they'll make consumers wait until the fall when, now, the current iPhone is unavailable from both Apple and AT&T;.

May 23, 08 - 03:09 pm Comment from: df

I think the old models will be the ones that ATT subsidizes. Start creating a tiered market. It could be the old model will be opened up to other carriers.

May 23, 08 - 06:15 pm Comment from: Register or Login

I'd like lower gas prices, Steve, so I can afford an iPhone.

May 24, 08 - 05:01 pm Comment from: Plop Plop Fizz Fizz

Ampar is physic!

May 24, 08 - 05:37 pm Comment from: ElderNorm

I would not be surprised if the Mac Mini went away. I was looking to buy one for work with a KVM switch so I could switch between the work pc and a mac. You know, the pc crashes or locks up and you jump to the mac, surf the web, until the pc unlocks. grin

Well, I picked up a MacBook referb for $850 instead of the Mac Mini and am super happy. I still use it with the KVM switch and jump back and forth but I can now take my mac on the road too.

NEAT>

Also, cut Munster a break. Its what he is NOT SAYING that is the big thing. NO anti-gravity, no super macs that do everything. etc.

Just a thought.

May 24, 08 - 08:59 pm Comment from: Ampar

Yes, I'm quite physic.

May 26, 08 - 09:58 pm Comment from: mike

"Ampar you must be physic... you could give John Edwards a run for his money..."
