Apple’s iPhone 1.1.3 to bring Locate Me, Home customization/additions, Google Maps update, more
Saturday, December 29, 2007 - 10:39 AM EST

Gear Live has posted a "iPhone 1.1.3 firmware feature gallery" which shows that Apple's amazing multi-touch device is soon due to get even better. No release date is known, but we expect it on or before Apple CEO Steve Jobs' Macworld Expo keynote presentation on Tuesday, January 15, 2008.

Looks like the soon-to-be-released iPhone firmware 1.1.3 has quite a few surprises. We were able to get a look at it, and here is what we found:
• The ability to send an SMS message to multiple people is now there
• Google Maps application can now pinpoint your location using cell tower triangulation [Locate Me]
• Google Maps can now display the Hybrid map view
• You can now drag and drop application icons on your home screen
• The home screen supports pagination
• You can now add web bookmarks to your home screen

Check out Gear Live's gallery here.

Where is copy and paste?

Dec 29, 07 - 10:52 am Comment from: pete1967

And where's the flash support for safari?

Get the basics working first!

Dec 29, 07 - 11:08 am Comment from: Steve Jobs

@pete1967

The longer we can keep Flash off the iPhone, the quicker it dies and the world can move on. Flash is never used properly anyway, it's mostly just used as sprit animation for web pages. Ajax/JavaScript can do anything Flash can and they are open standards.

Dec 29, 07 - 11:23 am Comment from: Man-O-Man

Wow. Just Wow!

This thing already completely changed my life and now it's doing it again. How much more of this can I take?

I've given up all computers, all forms of transportation, my job, my wife... everything. I only eat about once a week anymore.

I just hold this amazing device in my hand and the rest now just comes naturally.

Steve, I love you.

When if ever are we to get voice dialing!!! The iPhone needs to have voice dialing this is a BIG missing feature.

Dec 29, 07 - 11:24 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

Flash? Whatever. Without Microsoft Silverlight support the I-Phone is a goner. You MAC lemmings get all high and mighty with your "open standards" talk. If you ask me, open standards are a cop out.

Real innovators with a finger on the pulse of what is best for consumers make their own formats. That's hard work. I commend Microsoft in their continued efforts to make file formats which are tethered to the fine folks in Redmond. You can't go wrong. Microsoft is simply giving what any sane computer or media player user wants. You MAC sheep don't know what you're talking about.

Your potential. Our passion.™

And still no iChat?

I just got a Palm Centro for Christmas and while the phone's interface sucks, it does provide email, SMS, IM, and web. I'm ready for the iPhone 2.0. Sure hope it includes iChat.

Dec 29, 07 - 11:53 am Comment from: Ferf Muckmeyer

What about to do lists? More important than dragging home screen icons around.

Still, if this is credible, great addition to the feature set of the iPhone. It's about time.

Dec 29, 07 - 12:27 pm Comment from: ShelbyMac

Multi SMS recipients is a step in the right direction but where is the MMS? The iPhone needs this badly. I'm getting sick of having to go to AT&T;'s website to look at my received MMS's and very sick of not being able to save them!

Dec 29, 07 - 12:41 pm Comment from: Mr. Nickler

I am just so happy with my iPhone. Even after the "fanboy" love has worn off, I am still just so pleased with this device. I am glad to see Apple continuing to add features.

Can't wait for the update to be released.

Wow. Let's see other cellphone manufacturers try this. I think not. The more I own this this device the sweeter it gets.

From iphone.

Dec 29, 07 - 01:11 pm Comment from: Rip Ragged

Please, please, please, MDN, never outlaw trolls.

Zune Tang is either the funniest fanboy I've ever read (except me) or he/she/it's the most literate idiot on the web outside of Rob Dvenderlou. A national treasure.

Happy New Year

Dec 29, 07 - 01:15 pm Comment from: Rip Ragged

Oh, and one other thing -

I'd rather have an iPhone than Windows Vista Extreme Maximum Super-Duper with Extra Gravy and a Side of Onion Rings. Even if you throw in a free beer.

Dec 29, 07 - 01:32 pm Comment from: Tremor

iPhone: The phone that doesn't get obsolete 3 months after release, but actually gets even cooler.

Dec 29, 07 - 01:49 pm Comment from: Jake

This is sweet, but To Dos integrated with iCal/Mail are a MUST, as are cut/copy and paste. Flash would be nice but isn't that big a deal.

Dec 29, 07 - 02:01 pm Comment from: Lopez

I don't think this can be accurate; on the edit homepage button, it uses the word "wiggle." Wiggle is NOT an Apple word.

Dec 29, 07 - 02:03 pm Comment from: shux

Great News! My only problem with iphone is the receiver volume. I wish I could turn it up so I can hear my phone calls in a bar.

Dec 29, 07 - 02:06 pm Comment from: Jubei

Arrrrgh where is my To Do, Cut & Paste and Notes... well ActiveSync and BB access is needed. Got to get them in those corporate areas also. grin

Dec 29, 07 - 02:47 pm Comment from: Hurray

Hail WebKit.

@Steve Jobs

This is going very well sir.
With Android and Ajax/JavaScript - MacroSloth will be seen wasting it's efforts with FireFox, HD DVD, Xbox, Zune, Vista, XML... blah blah blah...

They won't know what hit them my leader!

Dec 29, 07 - 02:51 pm Comment from: loser

what was Active-X and why did it die?

Dec 29, 07 - 02:59 pm Comment from: bah

Just freakin' awesome! But let's not get all worked up over fancy-pantsy when we're missing some key basics!

To wit:
- Notes that sync
- To do list
- Save out SMS convo
- Ability for browser to mimic desktop OS X so usability "gurus" who force us into gimped mobile websites can be rendered irrelevant once and for all.

This is for un-jailbroken iPhoners out there, anyway. Reward our patience, Sir Jobs.

Dec 29, 07 - 03:02 pm Comment from: curentinterest

Needed: Horizontal keyboard in all (well at least, most) applications; cut & paste.

Dec 29, 07 - 03:17 pm Comment from: Steve Jobs

Dear Fellow Mac lovers,
I'd just like to say that we plan to do this all next month. 1.1.3 will be even better than described and 1.1.4 will support third party applications. I am very happy that we can bring this to you so soon. Also, movie rentals will be a breakthrough in technology. Movie Rentals will be called iRentals and will be supported through Apple TV. You will have all your movie rentals at the press of a button. I can't wait.

Sincerly,
Steve Jobs
CEO Apple Inc.

Dec 29, 07 - 03:19 pm Comment from: Yo

I agree with the cut and paste, it really needs it. MMS would be handy. Also voice dialing, i mean, come on???

But the one thing it has to have, oh please stevie poo, give me GAMES!!! argh!!!

Dec 29, 07 - 04:11 pm Comment from: Georgy Porgy

Never heard of Silverlight...but I have heard of Javascript and Flash...I wonder why?

Dec 29, 07 - 04:41 pm Comment from: El Guapo

All great, but I still want:
-iChat
-MMS
-Email groups (if it's there already, I haven't found it)

Dec 29, 07 - 05:43 pm Comment from: FanofSteveJ

Yes, please, copy and paste - we need this! Games would be nice too.

Steve - you're my hero.

Dec 29, 07 - 06:01 pm Comment from: The Other Steve

It would be nice to be able to click on an address in an email and have it open a map the way you can with phone numbers being clickable to the phone.

And the way you can using Leopard's mail program.

Happy for the update though. Looking forward to see how well the "Locate Me" function works.

Dec 29, 07 - 07:33 pm Comment from: Zune Tang Revealed

I just figured it out... Zune Tang is really a 'to-the-death' Mac lover. His pro-windoze comments are just sarcastic pokes meant to bring the platform's deficiencies to light.

Dec 29, 07 - 08:11 pm Comment from: cartoonasaurus

Thank you Captain Obvious!

Now, one more time, how do I wipe?

Dec 29, 07 - 09:53 pm Comment from: Jooop

I don't care about the animation portion of Flash...that's just used for annoying web ads and bad "megan's first web page" pages. I care about the Flash video player. The vast majority of social video sites use Flash. I know that sucks when there's a superior h.264 open standard they could be using, but reality is what it is, and we need the Flash video player on the iPhone.

Dec 29, 07 - 10:30 pm Comment from: Jim

delete ALL email would be nice.....there needs to be a faster way to go through your email and dump it....one at a time is a pain in the arse...I get lots of emails...

Dec 30, 07 - 02:59 am Comment from: jbella

all very nice, but the iphone lacks a decent can opener.

Come on apple... take care of the basics before you go adding useless stuff....

Oh well... maybe 1.1.4

Dec 30, 07 - 02:16 pm Comment from: Alex Mckenna

Well, how about a cork-screw?
And something for taking stones out of horses' hooves?
And a small laser printer to produce its own playing-cards...
Actually, cut-and-paste and a horizontal keyboard would be even more useful.

Dec 30, 07 - 06:13 pm Comment from: Majikthize

What about searchable contacts and a real to-do app? Fer cryin' out loud. Oh, and Notes that sync. Sheesh!

Dec 30, 07 - 08:09 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

"I just figured it out..."

You just figured it out?

WHAT? I am stunned by this news.

Dec 31, 07 - 02:36 pm Comment from: gorsh

I've been wanting the ability to pinpoint my location - I often find myself needing to be triangulated...

wait, is this Cnet?

Dec 31, 07 - 02:38 pm Comment from: Ampar

I may need cell tower triangulation later tonight.

Dec 31, 07 - 02:39 pm Comment from: mac

Gearlive has been down for 3 days won't load here at who runs that pathetic site??????????????

Jan 03, 08 - 08:15 pm Comment from: Andrew

writeing this with the horizonal keyboard right now... U know why?! Cuz its the best and is it so hard to add to the text! And the copy and paste. iPhone is the best nuf said!

Jan 05, 08 - 05:32 pm Comment from: james c

@steve jobs

oh my god your such a twat pretending to be Steve jobs, and it shows you know dick all about computers when you say flash is used only as an animation tool. nothing new really. customize lets you alter the icons around tool, and it lets you put 5 icons down the bottom, no themes, no copy paste, no flash. mps big deal, the network is too slow for gmaps anyway.
