Apple’s iPhone 2.1 firmware beta shows reference to new iPod touch model
Wednesday, July 30, 2008 - 11:09 AM EST

"The beta release of the iPhone 2.1 firmware turned up GPS and push e-mail hints, and some further exploration has uncovered even more juicy tidbits. iPhone Atlas has the details of one such discovery: a reference to what could be an upcoming iPod touch revision," Justin Berka reports for Ars Technica.

"In this case, the excitement is related to references to an 'iPod2,1' model that have been discovered in the 2.1 beta release. As you may know, Apple attaches a model identifier string ('MacBook3,1,' for example) to each product line, which generally changes when significant updates are made to a particular product," Berka reports.

"These strings tend to show up in firmware releases, since they help tell the firmware which devices to support and also end up being fairly reliable indicators of upcoming models," Berka reports.

I bought an iPod touch last week and love it. Quite possibly the best designed & manufactured item I've ever owned.

Amazing how such a small item can do so much. Started using "Handbrake" so I could have some movie content on it with "my" dvd's and like that also.

It's easy to see why other companies are struggling to keep up with the big Apple.

Haha... just when DELL comes out with the Zing, they are already way behind on the curve. I hope they call it the Zing.... what a perfect name to match up with the Zune.

A buddy just bought one and was showing me some of the music applications. Drum machine and keyboard apps are stunning.

I'd love to see an iPod touch CAD application. VectorWorks Lite... or even a resurrected MiniCAD?

The touch makes every PDA I've seen or used look like 1970s calculators.

I am *so* anxious for this update. And if I can get a 16GB model for $299, even better. But I don't expect to see this until the "Back to School" promotion has run its course.
