Apple’s iPhone 3.0 to allow background tasks?
Tuesday, February 03, 2009 - 03:17 PM EDT

"With the release of iPhone Firmware 2.2.1, many were left wondering what had become of the Push notification system that Apple had announced at the Worldwide Developer's Conference back in June," Arnold Kim reports for Mac Rumors.

"By now, it's clear that something is holding up the Push notification service. While we aren't sure what the specific issues are, we've heard that as an alternative Apple is considering allowing apps to run as user selectable background processes. If so, this feature would likely come in the rumored iPhone 3.0 software update but would be limited to only one or two processes on current hardware. The next generation iPhone, however, would likely see less restricted background process support due to its improved hardware," Kim reports.

PNS that Apple promised by September has not been implemented because of technical problems.

Apple has a few issues with it or it would have been released. I believe the same goes for Video, MMS and copy & paste. Unless Apple is holding all items for the next iPhone release so people can believe its a worthy upgrade IMO.

Let's hope they don't market features like "copy and paste" as a feature of a next-generation phone. That would just be a blatant insult of any intelligent person who owns a current iPhone. I doubt that would happen. They'll keep delivering new features to current iPhones as part of their agreement with AT&T;and customers.

@MM,
Sounds like a logical and reasonable comment.

So, June is the slated month for the iPhone Rev C to be delivered?

I have been playing the waiting game for a long time. First, to have my Sprint contract expire. Now, to wait for the next gen. iPhone.

Oh well, there could be far worse things... smile

I want a combination of push notifications and background processes.

Surely if anyone can design a competent way to do this, it's Apple.

And if iPhone 1.0 and 2.0 won't have the hardware to handle multiple processes then push notifications might still make for a superior compromise for current iPhone owners.

It won't be long before we can opt to run iFart as a background process, just like it is in real life.

And that's another thing! Who says by the time this "Pre" thing comes out that iPhone 3.0 won't have what ever this Pre is expected to have, and more? Huh? Huh? HUH?

18,000 apps and counting, beyotch!!!

And this is based on what? all the benchmarks and tests they have done on current background processes compared to available memory and CPU speed vs the posted specs on the new iphone that apple announced?

I DONT THINK SO. LETS MAKE CRAP UP TO SOUND LIKE WE KNOW ABOUT APPLE PRODUCTS.

"THIS JUST IN: APPLE'S current software may change with an update, but next hardware revision the software may behave differently" WOW!!!

MDN,

No 'Take' on Apple not delivering something they promised? If this were RIMjob or M$ you would have crucified them. Apple will have to allow background processes because the implementation of this service was conceptually flawed. It sounds nice and looks even better in a diagram but its not a practical service. I really don't miss copy and paste that much but I expect it to be in the next major version of the software (3.0 I guess). MMS is a different beast. That's AT&T;holding that up. Apple left the functionality out of the operating system because the iPhone was released in the US first. And instead of making different software versions for different countries, they're allowing overseas carriers the ability to develop MMS apps. So its not that the phone can't do MMS, its that AT&T;doesn't want it. Just like video conferencing won't come to the iPhone in the US for some time. AT&T;'s network can barely keep up with the demand that devices like the iPhone are putting on it.

I want missed call reminder!!!!

Please Apple, I cannot listen my wife's complaints anymore.

Feb 03, 09 - 05:36 pm Comment from: Jeff

@Rob
What you really want is the new App I am developing called Wife Mute, it uses the built in Mike to record your nagging wife and plays her comments rite back at her, after she hears herself for a wile she will realize what a nag she is and stop.

To all of the people bitching about background services, do you have any idea how long the battery life will be for this activity. I owned a Lifedrive that was set up for background services notification and the battery lasted all of 3 hours! With Wifi on, Bluetooth on, there was no way that the thing was even useful. How many of you have Blackberries or Microsoft smartphones with background services? If so, what is the battery life like? Right now, I can use my iPhone for 3 days (3G) without a charge.

Now, as for Copy and Paste? That's a whole different can of whoopa**.

Feb 03, 09 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Dallas

Ug.. I kinda hope not. I personally like the way the Apps work now. I like that they shut down completely when I hit the home button. Sure I can think of at least one app that I would like to have in the background -namely a tracking app for theft insurance- but you know what is going to happen. As soon as they allow this - EVERY App will have an excuse to run in the background. Suddenly we're windows.

My WinMo Sprint Mogul will last for 2-5 days depending on usage of the internet and voice calls. That is with wifi off, bluetooth on, and email set to check every 10 mins.

And before you guys crucify me for not having an iPhone, I have Sprint SERO (500 anytime, unlimited nights/weekend, unlimited data/text for $30 a month) so iPhone will have to come to me!

I am sick of titles like this.

"Apple’s iPhone 3.0 to allow background tasks?"

Just say it normally.

"Will Apple's iPhone 3.0 allow background tasks?"

PLEASE!

Apple’s iPhone 3.0 to allow background tasks?

Now Google Earth can run its rootkit "automatic updater" on iPhone too.

Sweet!

"Let's hope they don't market features like "copy and paste" as a feature of a next-generation phone."

You can bet your ass they will, just like they promised latency-free audio with OS X10.0, did not deliver until they bundled it with 10.2 and sold it as an upgrade. I'll bet my bottom dollar that Push, Copy&Paste;, and especially background multitasking will all require purchase of a new iPhone.

"I owned a Lifedrive that was set up for background services notification and the battery lasted all of 3 hours!"

It can depend on what those background processes are doing.

One obvious reason you would want background processes is to be "always connected." Take a simple example of an IM client. You connect to the IM server and send and receive messages over that connection. However, if you're not sending and receiving messages, that connection is still active. Which means the cellular radio is still on, which means your battery life will be about the same as your "talk time."

So why not shut off the radio? Because if you do that, you lose your connection on the other end, so you're no longer "on line."

Of course, background processes may be useful for other things as well. A great example is GPS and turn-by-turn directions--something must always be running and checking in with the GPS to see where you are so it can determine that you'll need to make a right turn in 1 mile. That doesn't consume the battery as much as the cellular radios, but "No background applications" means "No background applications."

Background processes probably require one of those new chips from the co. Apple bought.

I think iPhone line would be divided to Nano (smaller with the same performance as the current G3), 3G with current chip and multicore, and bigger line (mainly iPod Touch) with bigger screen and battery.

For Asian markets the Nano would be perfect, people with baby fingers would love it, then a 4,5" iPodTouch would be perfect for some apps.

Just give us 1 background app....
