Apple’s iPhone 3GS jailbroken
Friday, July 03, 2009 - 01:39 PM EST

"With the iPhone 3GS slowly coming back into stock after selling out during the first week of release, there is more good news for potential buyers: the 3GS has been jailbroken," Bill Andad reports for DaniWeb.

"Yes, 19 year old George Hotz who you might remember shot to hacking fame a couple of years back when he claimed to be the first to unlock the original iPhone, has done it again. His 'purplera1n' software has been made available for immediate download, although it remains in Beta, and is said to be able to successfully jailbreak the new iPhone 3GS," Andad reports.

@RM,

Are you serious????

Yeah, let's stop the creator from having control? We have already been there, it's called the "Windows PC" market.

it's not that we hate the creator, but they do lack some imagination for instance this is the best one ever

I agree with the dev team, he should have waited till 3.1 for the release in case apple plugs the hole....

Hail to the jailbroken iPhone!! Some people are purist and like to play around and make things interesting. I am one for sure. Don't get me wrong Apple made a beautiful fun outstanding product, its just I choose along with so many to add a lil something something to the device i use everyday to make it a lil more personal, i love having a picture of my kids as the background behind all my apps and my phone works just as good as a stock phone. So yeah 3 Cheers to the iPhone jail breakers out there. i don't support the app that steals from the App Store though, that is just plain wrong.

This is great news. I hope this will lead to the Dev-Team releasing their jailbreak for the 3GS. I didn't agree with their decision to wait for the next firmware release. Based on their logic, why not wait until 5.0 firmware is released?

Jul 03, 09 - 01:51 pm Comment from: macslut

The reason for waiting for 3.1 is that the release of 3.1 is imminent...and I'm not sure they were waiting for it, or just to see it once it was in the hands of developers as an RC.

The issue here is that Apple has only sold a small amount of iPhone 3GS units compared to what they will sell. They haven't come close to finishing early production runs on it.

With the jailbreak being released before 3.1 is being finalized, Apple could patch 3.1 *and* have 3.1 be the shipping OS for the majority of iPhone 3GS units that will end up being purchased.

To be clear, anyone with a 3.0 iPhone 3GS who prepared for the jailbreak should be fine when 3.1 comes out even if Apple patches it, but if you're on 3.1 first without having been prepared, you're screwed...unless another exploit is found.

Hotz decision was base on believing that you do what you can today and find new exploits as needed in the future.

The Dev Team didn't want to do this.

There's also an issue of critical mass. If a significant number of iPhones are produced and shipped with 3.x that are jailbreakable, Apple could be less inclined to patch this and install the patched OS on new iPhones. Furthermore, by waiting, if Apple does patch when discovered, it will allow for more users to have jailbroken iPhones, and thus more development in the jailbreak community.

I'm not saying Hotz or the Dev Team is right/wrong, just that this was the Dev Team's perspective which differs from Hotz.

I've also heard that the Dev Team wants to wait until a few more issues are addressed and everything is fully stable. So even now that the jailbreak is in the wild, the Dev Team may still hold off on the release.

Either way, all of these people are GODS in my book and have my complete respect and admiration.

There's a reason why this is a beta.

The maps don't work, and neither does Winterboard.

But it's progress, and progress is good.

Jailbroken and unlocked

Rattythief can't wait until Apple goes out of business, then all the awesome creative technology companies out there who are making amazing software and great user interfaces can finally flourish.

Not impossible.

Why jailbreak?
I did not find anything worthwhile when I did it,
so I restored original firmware.

Jul 03, 09 - 04:27 pm Comment from: macslut

@nekogami13,

Here's why I do it:
Multitasking with 3rd party apps.
Categories on Springboard.
SBSettings (like a control panel dashboard).
Skype over 3G and Edge.
Themes, either through Winterboard, or do you own.
Access to local HTML files.
MxTube (allows you to save YouTube videos).
Ability to hack and customize apps (cheat with games).
Ability to stream music from your iPhone to a computer with iTunes.
SSH/FTP/HTTP access.

The list goes on and on.

Generally speaking, it turns the iPhone from a consumer electronics device into a real handheld computer with full access. If nothing else, it's nice to see the iPhone for what it is, from the inside, as a computer.

I'd much rather have a jailbroken 3G than an unjailbreakable 3GS...although I bought the 3GS, because I knew it would be jailbreakable soon enough...I'm going crazy in the meantime waiting to be able to do everything I could with my old iPhones.

Awwww

Jailbreak ... Schmailbreak

Don't matter much to Joe the iPhone Guy

But, betcha this, every time there is a hack

Puts a smile on Steve's face

Especially when it's some teenager

Hell, that's how Steve and Woz got started

Good to know that "spirit and energy" is still around

And the future of tech innovation is going strong

Probably even land the kid a job up the road

Plus, as Apple re-locks it, get to dance the dance all over again

Just met a PC guy with a jailbreak iPhone. It's so PC in fact...

@ macslut (really? macSLUT?)

You forgot Cycorder.

As long as Apple continues in their indefensible app approval process, I'll support the Jailbreaking process.

Jailbreaking seems to be of same significance as OSX86 effort. Technically, it violates Apple's rules, it is, for practical purposes, irrelevant and useless for pretty much all iPhone owners, other than a minuscule group of adventurous tinkerers and hobbyists.

Jailbreaking and unlocking the original EDGE iPhone was a lucrative enterprise. You could get the subsidised phone for $400, never activate it with AT&T, then jailbreak it/unlock it and use it on T-Mobile (or sell it overseas for $800 or more).

Today, there is no such motivation anymore. You can't even walk out the door from the store without first activating the phone and signing with AT&T for two years. This makes unlocking practically pointless for most (with a possible legitimate exception of those who often travel overseas and want to use local SIM cards).

I look at jailbreakers with curiosity and amusement. I'm sure they love the sense of accomplishment and empowerment it gives them. If I had the iPhone (make that: when I get the iPhone), I wouldn't bother. What Apple provides with it far surpasses anything I had had with any phone before, and is more than I would possibly need for now.

Predrag, while I won't group you in with the anti-jailbreaking nazis yet, you certainly have an air of condescension that annoys me.

I don't jailbreak my phone because it gives me a thrill. I do it because Apple denies a legitimate 3rd party video recording app via the App Store, and jailbreaking the phone allows me to get video on my iPhone 3G.

I'm fine with people not wanting to jailbreak for security reasons or whatever, so why can't people be fine with my reasons for jailbreaking?

Jul 04, 09 - 12:38 pm Comment from: Predrag

HazMatt:

I have no issues with you jailbreaking your phone. My main point os, is that really worth it? If you normally make, say, $150 per hour at your job, that would mean all the hassle of jailbreaking, updating, downloading applications would cost you some serious money, unless this is precisely your hobby.

This is my argument. When I do get that iPhone, all the benefits of jailbreaking would be insufficient to compel me to do it, considering the amount of free time I would have to sacrifice in order to make it happen and keep it going. It is kind of like souping up your BMW. You void the warranty, you're on your own and you need a lot of personal involvement in order to keep it going. Sure, you get an even zippier beamer, but is it really worth it (again, unless you're a hobbyist)?
