Apple’s iPhone propels touchscreen technology into golden moment
Monday, June 29, 2009 - 12:29 PM EDT

New MacBook Pro"Touchscreen technology is having a golden moment," Stephanie N. Mehta reports for Fortune. "Fueled by the success of Apple's iPhone, various wireless phone makers have introduced their own touch-screen devices... (Gartner Research estimates 50% of all smart phones will be equipped with touch screen by 2012.)"

Mehta reports, "Every digital company -- and quite a few upstarts -- are racing to deploy touchscreen technology. PC and cell phone makers are hoping touch screens will prompt consumers to upgrade their gadgets -- and even pay a premium for such hands-on computing."

"In a January 2009 report, Amy Leong, a research director at Gartner notes that touch screens are permeating 'every aspect of our digital lives,' including television remote controls, refrigerators and portable media players," Metha reports.

Just wait until the iTablet comes out! That will be Touch's Big Bang, explosive birth of a new universe.

You don't say???

Does this mean the realization that Apple is years ahead of the pack with it's implementation, will finally sink in?

My contract on my (16GB) iPhone was almost up and I immediate renewed for another 2 years with a shiny new 32 GB black iPhone; faster, more responsive, and I feel MUCH BETTER now.

Too bad these phone companies don't realize that touchscreens are not what makes the iPhone so great. It's MULTI-touch and the software. The sad thing is a lot of idiots fall for it, too. I can't tell you how many people I see showing off their new phones to everyone saying "and look, it's got a touchscreen like the iPhone!" Um... no.

@qka

All the more reason to leave the phone in the dumpster! smile

@judgejudy,

Like to moan and whine, don't you?

Please think again before simply posting your endless dislikes. We are bored of you.

The rest of the industry will never acknowledge that Apple is so far ahead of the pack, as doing so would require all the other players to face their own basic ineptitude.

I don't think multi-touch has as much to do with it as the smooth glass surface and intuitive interface.

Multi-touch in its current iteration on the iPhone is overrated. I could see if Apple took gestures to a new level with every release but it's the same pinch and zoom crap from two years ago.

I think Apple is saving the good stuff for the iTab. All the stuff that leaked in those patents like the gesture dictionary and what not.

ahh, MDN deleted my post. pooh!

Macaday, your just having a bad Monday, cheer up and don't vent at me.

I'm a old touch typist, I like the feed back touch gives. smile

Multi-touch and the software is the end all and be all. Unless the others can "invent" there own multi-touch they are forever destined to be in 2nd place.

"Gartner Research estimates 50% of all smart phones will be equipped with touch screen by 2012"

Translation: The iPhone will have a 50% market share by 2012.

The Palm Pre already mimicks Apple's multi-touch gestures and we haven't heard a peep from the lawyers in Cupertino. Now the industry knows Apple was bluffing about protecting their property and the floodgates are open.

The new HTC Hero has multi-touch (the first Android phone of many). The Zune HD will have multi-touch and MS wants it on all future Windows Mobile devices. It's bound to become a standard feature on touchscreen smartphones.

Apple needs to quit lollygagging and up the ante with new, more advanced multi-touch gestures that make the iPhone look dated.

The real judge judy is a pain in the posterior also.

I was a real judge and my first name is judy. smile

Unlike the actor on TV.

I would pick another name, but once I saw the rule you can't use another name so I'm stuck with this one.

You know us judges, follow the rules.

Leave it to Apple to blaze the trail!

AGAIN.

The list of technologies that Apple has done RIGHT, legitimized and taken to the next level and well beyond is long!

To name a few...
Mouse
3 1/2" floppy
24-bit color
USB
FireWire
Ethernet
wireless networking

Most of these things DID exist before, but Apple put them into their machines, made them work seamlessly, pushed the technologies forward and made many of them ubiquitous, while the rest of the industry sat and waited.

Could we PLEASE have some brand new iTablet rumors now?????????

Jun 29, 09 - 03:04 pm Comment from: threeonezero

You can put a any touch screen on a pile of crap and it's still a pile of crap. There isn't just one silver bullet that makes a terrific product.

Jun 29, 09 - 03:04 pm Comment from: NHL

Most, if not all of these also-rans will do Touch Screen, but do it wrong.

Jun 29, 09 - 03:05 pm Comment from: NHL

threeonezero, your post is what I meant to say. smile

Multi-Touch offers a great deal of adaptability and control over our computers. The trick is to make sure that the interface is designed right. Mac OS X as it is designed now is too focused on the keyboard and mouse. That why PC Tablets failed to catch on. You have to abandon the OS as it is today and redesign it for Multi-Touch.

I've been researching Multi-Touch for awhile now. See my blog to read about a concept interface I've developed:

Enjoy...

@SlateGuy

YES!

Thank you SlateGuy. You seem to be one of the few who understand this. This is why the iTablet is going PWN ALL!

I'll never forget the day about 2 years ago (right around when the original iPhone came out) when I was in a bar and went to look at the CD's on the jukebox. I tried to move them by swiping across the glass rather than using the buttons below! And, no, I wasn't drunk yet.

Ahhh....the influences of Apple.

Jun 29, 09 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

@ R2

Apple didn't move very quickly against Psystar either, but eventually came out with guns a'blazin. I suspect Apple is taking a VERY close look at the Pre and will respond when the time is appropriate.

Also, Apple may be waiting for others to throw their hat into the patent infringement ring, as in others with money. Not likely, but Apple may want to pursue this once and for all instead of continuously filing lawsuits.

Remember, Apple has patents issued, which means it does not have to sue right away but can wait it if so chooses.

Jun 29, 09 - 08:00 pm Comment from: Ichabod Mudd

@SlateGuy:

I have reliable info that Apple's been working on a 3D multi-touch interface for close to 25 years. I suspect the next 5 years will be much more interesting than the last 5....
