Apple’s iPhone SDK to offer built-in simulator (and be delayed until WWDC)?
Tuesday, February 12, 2008 - 12:44 PM EST

"When reverse engineering, it's sometimes hard to figure out exactly what you're looking at, and what it all means," Erica Sadun reports for TUAW. "For example, the iPhone's supported platforms include the following."

Platforms = (M68, N82, simulator);
Platforms = (N45);

Sadun reports, "We know what the M68 platform is. It's the iPhone. And we know what N45 is, the iPod touch. So what's the N82? Could it be another member of the iPhone family? Perhaps. It's hard to make that call without any more data -- so rather than worry about N82, let's consider the next entry: 'simulator.'"

Sadun asks, "Does this indicate that the upcoming SDK may offer a Mac-based developer simulator, an 'iPhone in a box?'"

Full article, including rumors of "big SDK delays -- perhaps all the way to WWDC," here.

Could be

Does it really matter until its here?

A delay would drop the stocks down to even lower level. Normally I do not mind delays from Apple, but the iPhone has so much untapped potential waiting to be unlocked by third party software developers, that I dread the thought of waiting till WWDC. Then waiting another 3 to 4 months for software releases.

Keep fingers crossed folks and hope that the delay is just a rumor.

Can I order capuccino for the entire MDN readership with the simulator?

Just my $0.02

Rumored delays aside, the idea of an iPhone simulator for developers is a great idea.

Feb 12, 08 - 01:48 pm Comment from: Even Better

Even better would be to allow iPhone developers to run their apps on their own iPhone. I would love to be able to whip up some little apps for my own personal use without Apple laughing at my code when I submit it.

still waiting to buy... SDK and forthcoming apps.... want real chat, not sms texting; if the SDK really is delayed I may go ahead and wait until the next hardware rev comes out.

"Even better would be to allow iPhone developers to run their apps on their own iPhone."

Agreed. I tend to dislike "simulators" and the like for developing code simply because things always end up working great in the simulator and then have some problem when running "live" and you end up with no way to debug it.

That said, from what the rumour mill has spouted, you will be able to run your own apps on the iPhone, though you will have to go through some pain to get "permission" from Apple to do--probably via some sort of ADC mechanism.

N82 = asteroid

When you think about it, it's obvious that there would be an iPhone / iPod touch simulator to facilitate testing. It would save a lot of time not to have to load a new app version into a real iPhone after every round of bug fixes. My questions is, how long will it take for some developer to create a hand-held device that runs the "simulator" as the "actual" interface, or to get it running on an existing Windows-based tablet device.

Feb 12, 08 - 02:47 pm Comment from: Al

Could it be the simulated network?

Thought it could.

Feb 12, 08 - 03:25 pm Comment from: jules

Hasn't anyone got the idea that this whole simulator
implentation might point to some sort of "emulation"?
Remember there's gonna be a 3G iPhone update in let's say june..
it might see a processor update too, right?
NEW INTEL PROCESSOR...ENTIRE SDK-PROGRAMS -->CONVERTABLE TO THE NEW PLATFORM with the help of a converter already built into the SDK.
Maybe that's behind it.

just my 2 c.

Is this a rumor, or is it fact?
If it is a rumor, thanks yet again for tanking the stock. MDN, please report facts from Apple, not rumors from TUAW.

Feb 12, 08 - 04:26 pm Comment from: Daner

It might be helpful if we knew more about how they know what M68 and N45 are, as well as a list of other platform names that Apple has used.

It would seem to indicate that there is at least one unreleased platform that will be supported by the SDK, but I think that it is anybody's guess right now as to whether it is a phone or not.

N82 is not "iPhone with 3G." N82 is the much rumored ultraportable. it's been kicking around first tier developers in plain plastic cases of varying size and shape for about a year now. it's essentially an iPod touch with a twice the screen real estate and a more pwerful version of the OS. Everyone will discount this but the report I heard from one of these developers was that the system was "Full OSX" not an embeded version. this developer's company had one "N82" box around WWDC last year with the entire office signing NDA's (this same developer was playing with a beige 1.6ghz pre release G5 box 4 months before those were released - with a lock on the box to keep them from even looking at the internals). they sent the "big iPod touch" - as he called it - back sometime later octoberish, and he assumed the project was being cancelled.

Of course there'll be a simulator.
There is always one for things like this. When you write for mobile phones, even back when you wrote for the Newton, you'd have a simulator. It's just essential.

It would be a massive pain having to download continually as you get your user interface right. I need to move a button 1 pixel to the left, need to use a slightly lighter shade of blue etc etc.
And debugging some crashing, half written, program within the gadget is a big headache.

I hope the N82 is what's rumoured above. It would be very cool.
But, it means there isn't any Touch2 or iPhone2 in the near future. No code numbers for them.

I cannot BELIEVE Apple is screwing so many things up. I've never been a fan of non-Microsoft technology, but come on, how incompetent can Stevie be? They showed a glimmer of hope that they would crawl out of their "dumb it down and make it simple for ijits" hole. They had so much promise. And then disaster after disaster. First Apple TV 2 is months or weeks late, and now the SDK too?

Palm and Motorola are laughing all the way to the bank. And so is Danger--now with Microsoft innovation on board!

Feb 12, 08 - 09:48 pm Comment from: blucaso

Hortense, we already have Zune Tang to do the satire. If you can't do it any better, please go back to your day job.

Feb 12, 08 - 11:48 pm Comment from: greecaso

yeah and zune tang sucks bad enough already as it is.

Well, I'm not sure.

First, Newton had a serial port that transmitted data at--what--1Mbps? Compare that with an iPhone's 480Mbps. I don't think slow communication is going to be a problem.

Second, I don't think it would be a problem to send just the changes to make updates even faster. Since it's Cocoa, for example, sending the .nib file would be sufficient for any interface stuff.

Finally, Apple's had two-machine debugging for quite some time via a network connection. I'm sure you could also do it via USB if speed is an issue or via WiFi if necessary.

You MacZombies can't even see the forest for the trees. Buh-bye, iPhone. The pan has flashed.

Feb 13, 08 - 10:02 am Comment from: Brak

Ever fry an expensive device you're trying to debug ? I have! That's why you use a simulator most of the time.

Feb 13, 08 - 11:05 am Comment from: Ampar

"The pan has flashed."

You must be at least 110 years old. You might want to check out current camera flash technology. They don't use gunpowder any more. Isn't that amazing?

Buh-bye.
