Apple’s latest iPhone firmware allows saving images from Safari
Monday, April 14, 2008 - 04:24 PM EST

"The latest beta version of Apple's iPhone 1.2.0 firmware gives you the possibility of saving pictures straight from Safari and into the Photo Album," Gizmodo reports.

"We tried and it works: just hold your finger against an image for a longer time than usual and the popup [save] dialog will appear," Gizmodo reports.

1.2 do you not mean 2.0

Apr 14, 08 - 03:34 pm Comment from: Cubert

John,
1.2 will be renamed 2.0 when it is released. Apple has already stated as much.

This is interesting in a larger sense: the "hold your finger down" contextual pop-up menu system could be used for many different things, including copy/paste, dictionary lookup, etc., so this has much bigger ramifications than simply getting images off of safari.

Yay!

Can't June come any faster already? I can't wait for all these goodies to come and all the 3rd party apps to buy!! wink

Right you are! This could be a very cool addition to the iPhone's bag of tricks.

Pressing and holding to get a context menu is a MS Tablet PC thing. I wonder if they patented it? I just figured that was why it wasn't in Apple's stuff already.

Pressing and holding to get a new context menu is hardly a Microsoft innovation. On your OS X dock, for example, press and hold on the Applications icon, or your Home icon. It's like a right-click.

This has always been a way of bringing contextual menus in some apps (right click) and one of the reasons many users could do without two button mice.

There has to be a limit to what you can patent. How is "press and hold for contexual menu" on the iPhone (or an MS tablet pc) different from "right click for contexual menu" using a mouse? Something this generic can't be patented... at least I hope not!

Apr 14, 08 - 05:30 pm Comment from: mossman

alansky, even less deserving things have gotten through the US patent office. Like a patent on a swing set.

I wouldn't put it past them to allow a patent to press-and-hold finger, even though it's a basic extension of a mouse click.

Apr 14, 08 - 05:44 pm Comment from: just asking...

So is it to be believed that there will be no more updates till 2.0 is release?? just asking, don't be getting on a rampage for asking.

Behold, the future.....

Apr 14, 08 - 07:11 pm Comment from: uPhone not iPhone

Oh brother. You can save an image from Safari. Stop the presses! This innovation is more than any of us can handle.

I swear. You iPhone fools must have only had little pink plastic disposable phones from 7-11 until now.

"Behold the future"

LMAO

Well, if you don't have an iPhone, you can't even browse the web without tearing your hair out. Its not about the features silly, it's about how they're implemented.

Apr 15, 08 - 01:29 am Comment from: fojimo

Selecting and holding was the way you selected things on the Newton.

Apr 15, 08 - 01:57 am Comment from: British Mac Head

Yeah, well remembered fojimo. I had three Newtons. So MS can't have a patent on press and hold for contextual menu because Apple could just claim "prior art" with the Newton.

Oh and Ashan, uPhone was just bating you. He's a troll. Ignore him.

the uPhone is just a skin on top of some shitty old fashioned stylus using pressure sensitive piece of crap. I mean the demo I saw was a brick made by Sony that didn't even have touch capability. Dude. Apple had those with the Newton (which is still better and more capable OS than Windoze poo-bile).

"next..."

I'd rather be able to save images received in email to my photo album.
