Apple’s Mac OS X beats out Windows, takes 53.9% OS-only market share in Japan
Tuesday, November 13, 2007 - 11:25 AM EDT

"Microsoft's has taken a bruising in the Japanese marketplace just as Apple's Mac OS X Leopard was released, according to a new report by the country's Business Computer News," Electronista reports.

"The publication notes that while sales of Mac OS X increased dramatically between September and October, climbing from a rate of 15.5% year-over-year to 60.5%, Microsoft suffered from the reverse effect," Electronista reports.

"Sales growth of Windows plummeted from 75.3% to 28.7%," Electronista reports. "The sudden switch provided Apple with about 53.9% of the total OS-only marketshare in Japan during October -- a breakthrough for the company, BCN says."

I've long suspected the Japanese of high intelligence. The Euros on the other hand seem to lag, and thus they disapoint me.

Nov 13, 07 - 12:36 pm Comment from: viktor

that is a huge grow because to get windows you can have any computer, but to have Mac OS, you need a Apple Mac. So it is not as easily to get OSX, but is a lot more satisfactory to have it that having windows machines.

Nov 13, 07 - 12:43 pm Comment from: Karlheinz Schreiber

There were some issues when they translated the news into English. Here's what the report REALLY said:

だが、直近の07年10月には、アップルがシェア60.7%と大躍進。過去のアップルのシェアから見ても、60.7%という数字は飛び抜けており、前バージョンTigerの発売直後の05年5月の51.2%と比べても10ポイント近く上回っている。また10月は、Leopardが動作するシステム要件に満たない、古い機種を使用しているユーザーが中心とみられる、前バージョンTigerに対する駆け込み需要もあり、高いシェアの獲得を後押ししたようだ。

Hope that clears up a few things.

Nov 13, 07 - 12:44 pm Comment from: BC Kelly

Well, careful folks, don't get too excited - need to read the fine print in the original source report:

発売以後わずか6日で10月1か月間の「OS」パッケージ販売本数で過半数の53.9%を占めシェア1位を獲得。猛烈なスタートを切ったことがわかった。そこで、Leopard発売直後の人気の程をレポートする

Before everyone gets too excited, it'd be best to read the last line of the article. Overall for Apple, nothing else really matters except that last line.

Having lived in Japan I can say that the Japanese people do not put up with a 2nd rate product. If they've swiched from Windows to Leopard.....they will never go back.

Nov 13, 07 - 12:45 pm Comment from: Stock Trader

The Japanese recognize quality.

They lust over high end goods, always have.

Carried a Tiffiny's bag with my mom's christmass gift inside.

All the looks I got at my bag were from the Japanese.

I so happen to like the Japanese culture, but they can keep those fermented smelly fart bean things.

Bill in Providence…

Has it occurred to you that the reasons that the Euros tend to lag is because…

• Half the continent is still recovering from half a century under the jack-boot of the former Soviet Union.

• Other than the UK, France, Germany and Italy, Apple barely seems to take Europe seriously from a marketing perspective.

• To localise software for Japan, you localise it once. To localise software for Europe, you have to localise it in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Flemish, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Hungarian and many more languages besides. Then you have to create a marketing and support infrastructure for it.

I've long suspected the Americans of high intelligence. People in Providence…

Well, you get the idea.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:02 pm Comment from: Misleading Report...

The report refers to "OS Only" sales. I.e. there are more people buying copies of OS X Leopard than there are people buying copies of Windows VISTA. This does not mean that the Mac has taken over 50% of the computing market in Japan.

It means that when Leopard was released, more people went out and bought it than were buying VISTA ... AT THE MOMENT.

Windows is the primary operating system in use in Japan by far. Well over 90% of the computers in Japan run Windows. The remaining 10% is divided up between OS X and LINUX and the remaining variants of UNIX.

People aren't running out to purchase VISTA, but when they do go out and buy a new cheap ass PC, it will likely be running VISTA, not OS X cause they ain't running out and buying $3K Macs. They're buying cheap $500 PCs.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:06 pm Comment from: Jeff

You wont see that headline in Canada until we do what the Japanese did and that is stop buying Apple till they take your market seriously.
Apple has reported that sales in Japan have not kept pace for quite a while and so they have focused on that market. In Canada we are just taken for grated that we will adopt Apple products at the same rate as the US even when we don't get all the products (Cross Border shopping anyone).

Come on Apple a $150 premium on a base iMac? and that is not including our high tax!

Nov 13, 07 - 01:10 pm Comment from: @Jeff

You won't see that headline in Canada for the same reason that it's misleading in regard to Japan. It just isn't true. In Canada like everywhere else, MOST people will opt for the cheapest "good enough" solution and Windows definitely satisfies that demographic.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:10 pm Comment from: R2

Yeah right.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:10 pm Comment from: Murasaki

In the Japanese printing and magazine industry, if you're not using a Mac, you're not in business. Period. And that was in the 90s.

In Japan, if you tell anyone you use a Mac, they'll be impressed.
It is universally well recognized as a quality product.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:11 pm Comment from: @Jeff

Just think of the $150 premium as a tax. You Canuks don't mind taxes do ya?

Nov 13, 07 - 01:16 pm Comment from: R

@Misleading Report

"they ain't running out and buying $3K Macs"

I see your point but remember, the new iMacs are $1,200 - $1,800 and are very powerful and there's also the Mac Mini at $600.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:18 pm Comment from: anthony007

Can someone 'translate' the English version please? Lol

Nov 13, 07 - 01:18 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

"People aren't running out to purchase VISTA, but when they do go out and buy a new cheap ass PC, it will likely be running VISTA, not OS X cause they ain't running out and buying $3K Macs. They're buying cheap $500 PCs."

Actually, you're wrong, too. What people are buying in Japan is mobile phones. Most younger people don't even have computers any more, they do everything on their phones.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Dan The Man

Like anyone can make sense of that translation, it's like a dyslexic Yoda translated it.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:21 pm Comment from: Apple-Mat

@ James:
True, but when it comes to the iPhone in Germany, then it is the carrier T-Mobile which disappoints with the tariffs they offer.

And Mac OS X will not suceed like in Japan as I figured out that my German guys are at least the world champions in complaining.

Why only see the little not working details, but not be happy about the great ease of use?
If anybody out there understand this attitude, please let me know...

Nov 13, 07 - 01:23 pm Comment from: anthony007

Lost in Translation headline: Apple is a Savage Velocity Muzzle. LOL, what the hell is that supposed to mean??

Nov 13, 07 - 01:26 pm Comment from: 7 Samurai

I'm not surprised that, as the article has it, " 'Leopard' is a savage muzzle velocity".

As it points out, "Leopard SHINGURUYUZARAISENSU version of the estimated market price of 14,700 yen". Once you realize that "Microsoft's 'Windows Vista Home Premium,' the estimated market price of 30,300 yen" it's no contest for any thinking person, is it?

That's true in Japan, the UK, Europe, the US, Australia, and everywhere else

"Thinking person" wouldn't include the likes of Paul Thurrott. Obviously.

As the article says, Apple has an "APPURURASHII clever sales strategy".

It also has a damn good product.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:27 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Apple-Mat

Yeah, that was perfectly clear.

"I've long suspected the Japanese of high intelligence. The Euros on the other hand seem to lag, and thus they disapoint me."

Asians on average have a intelligence level 6 points over Europeans with a average score of 100.

However, most Asians are within the medium range of 106. Where as Europeans have wider intelligence range across the population. So in other words, many more Eurpoeans are higher than the average 100 and many more lower.

In the US the range of intelligence is clearly seen as one travels around the country.

IMMO, the Boston area seems to have the most smartest people, followed by Silicon Valley and a few other areas.

Forget the South, they are dumb as rocks down there. Religion and politics have kept generations of people in ignorance.

Good place to buy a car cheap, especially South Carolina.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:36 pm Comment from: Bell Curve

Anyway to answer your problem, you just need to find where the above average Europeans are and go there.

Nov 13, 07 - 01:38 pm Comment from: 7 samurai

I think Microsoft can't keep the current status quo where it's "always winter but never Christmas". At last the snow and ice is melting and the White Witch in Redmond is looking not to be invincible.

I've also just found that Walmart has sold out of its cheap Linux machine:

http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/11/12/2235200

People are finally catching on to Microsoft, finding out what it is and what it's done, how unethical it is. They know Microsoft is the bully of the industry, that it's cheated its customers and DRMed them and tried to sell them out to the RIAA/MPAA. They know it's but one step ahead of the law in several jurisdictions. They know it uses its non-standard formats, and regular changes in those formats, to competitors out and customers in and to keep them on an update treadmill. Well, they can stuff Office for the Mac, because I'll use iWork and Open Office on my Linux machine for anything iWork can't handle (which is precious little).

I think people are going to be looking at the alternatives more and more. And it can't happen too soon.

Nov 13, 07 - 02:11 pm Comment from: BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

Speaking of ignorance, it's usually the America-bashers and the South-bashers that demonstrate the most. How exactly do you think music production occurs if Nashville consists of nothing but tabaccky-chewin' rednecks? How do you suppose that Georgia Tech does their research?

And as for "religion keeping people dumb", tell that to C.S. Lewis, Tolkein, Pascal, Augustine, R.C Sproul, etc. Your theory holds about as much weight as wet toilet paper. Then again, two seconds worth of thinking would have shown you that.

My gosh. Thinking about it some more, I think "ignorance" would have been too kind a word to use to describe your thinking. No-one can not know such basic truths. No, what you suffer from is plain and simple stupidity. A shame, really, because stupidity can't be cured.

Nov 13, 07 - 02:13 pm Comment from: Jeff in Texas

@Bell Curve

Forget the South, they are dumb as rocks down there. Religion and politics have kept generations of people in ignorance.

As opposed to the north where unions and Democrats have kept generations of people in ignorance.

I'll take friendly dumb hicks over rude Yankees any day.

Nov 13, 07 - 02:15 pm Comment from: BustingTheSkullsOfIdiots

Oh, another point. I seriously doubt that the Japanese are doing everything on their cell phones. Playing with spreadsheets can't be fun on a cell phone, and music production would be impossible. Text editing (as in writing or editing), or HTML creation, or Flash, or photoediting, or CAD/CAM...well, you get the idea. The concept that a cell phone is a great or even a preferred platform for such tasks is silly.

"I'm big in Japan."

Nov 13, 07 - 02:25 pm Comment from: ApplePi

The Japanese do appreciate quality products, but they are also bandwagon buyers. If something is popular, or a popular celebrity endorses it, you will find people buying the said item in droves.

In Japan, it's not a question of a product being successful, it's a question of it remaining so.

That being said, I would think that given the current state of PCs, I've always thought that Macs were purpose built for the Japanese market, more so than the American one.

Apple's Form factor, elegant simplicity, compact, high attention to fit and finish make it very Japanese. Apple is everything a company NEEDS to be to even sell product in Japan. In Japan, Japanese consumers don't buy crap.

They are also very Made In Japan centric buyers, which makes the recent increase in Apple sales all the more remarkable.

Nov 13, 07 - 03:04 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Statistics and damn statistics. As with religious texts, numbers can be twisted to say just about anything.

Religion keeps the dumb dumber. As for the intelligent, they're too smart to let it hurt. Remember what Marx said: Religion... like gasoline, white sugar and televised sports... is the opiate of the masses

ApplePi: Macs are Made in China, not Japan. If you know any Japanese, you'll know that ANYthing China isn't exactly tops on their list.
