Monday, October 15, 2007 - 09:14 AM EST

"Leopard has reached the Golden Master status. It means that Leopard is ready, because Gold Master status is given the final shipping version of the software which is sent to duplicators for distribution.
The expected release date is the next October 26th," MyMac reports.

The full MyMac report also contains a link to "Download Leopard Golden Master via Torrent" via torrent site "Mininova" here.

Oh c'mon get bittorrent link that off here!

Oct 15, 07 - 08:18 am Comment from: Noraa Haras

Or "get that Bittorrent link off here". Beta torrents, fine, but not the release version!

Oct 15, 07 - 08:19 am Comment from: Regular Reader

Why is it that the pirates always seem to release an OS before the company? smile I'm still waiting for Apple to tell me what day to skip school.

Oct 15, 07 - 08:24 am Comment from: matalino

Wow. Brave website. Apple legal anyone?

Oct 15, 07 - 08:25 am Comment from: Andy C.

It's kind of a fine line between reporting the news and helping contribute to copyright infringement. I think MDN may be stepping over that line a bit here as I'm sure plenty of people will take advantage of the convenient link they have provided.

Apple, you better give us a date, otherwise you may find more people clicking on that link!

Oct 15, 07 - 08:26 am Comment from: Military Police

@Noraa Haras: Pirating is the new beta test.

Oct 15, 07 - 08:35 am Comment from: Jim

Apparently the torrent is a fake - the Checksum doesn't add up.

does apple spend ad dollars here?

Oct 15, 07 - 08:44 am Comment from: not even with ten foot pole

I have no sympathy for people who download this and end up with a compromised machine. For those of you who want a date try October 31. Experience has shown that Apple pushes things likes pushing this kind of thing to the last minute.

Oct 15, 07 - 08:48 am Comment from: Shogun

Not cool. Apple folks have been working for two years on this. Let them release it their way.

My PC is so much zippier now!

Since Apple doesn't make a matte screen MacBook, I had no other choice.

@OS X on PC: "My PC is so much zippier now! Since Apple doesn't make a matte screen MacBook, I had no other choice."

Oh, that is so sad that you are FORCED to STEAL!!! In similar logic, since BMW doesn't make a purple Mini Couper, I was forced to steal one and paint it the color I wanted. Life is so tough....

Oct 15, 07 - 09:24 am Comment from: christapher

if it were real there would probably be more seeders and much more leeches.

mdw: maybe the people who would steal it are not the "types" to seed. douches

@OS X on PC

Yea why bother paying close to $3000 for a MacBook Pro to get a matte screen when one can buy a matte screen PC laptop equal to a MacBook in performance for under $1000?

Just doesn't make sense.

Oct 15, 07 - 09:25 am Comment from: YimmieT

I'm all for freedom of information end everything but you need to take off the Torrent link. Including it was not very professional to say the least.

Oct 15, 07 - 09:30 am Comment from: @YimmieT

It was professional for me... running Leopard now.

I have a large investment in Mac OS X based software in which I make a living.

I can't afford a expensive MacBook Pro and I can't use a glossy screen as I work outdoors processing my photo's for the web.

Now what the FSCK am I supposed to do?

Apple made their choice and I have made mine.

I dunno, taste, style, class...

Oct 15, 07 - 09:31 am Comment from: Emil

I dont want it.
You shouldn't run version x.0 of any software. wait until atleast x.1 or preferably x.2

Oct 15, 07 - 09:32 am Comment from: sunnyhours

I am surprised this site would link to the torrent. That is promoting the theft of the OS as far as I'm concerned.

Could it also be seen as encouraging?

"I have a large investment in Mac OS X based software in which I make a living."

So which is it? You can afford the software but not the computer to run it? Are you a very good photographer?

Oct 15, 07 - 09:35 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

@ Emil

Or in the case of Leopard, the .5 version.

Oct 15, 07 - 09:40 am Comment from: OS X on PC

Lets face it

Apple wants their OS to be stolen and run on PC's, it gives them more market penetration.

Apple isn't interested in the common man who need a computer at a fair price. They just want the rich folks and those who will accept whatever hardware choices Apple makes for them.

Since Apple isn't going to sell the common working man a computer, at least they have their OS running on his PC. Eventually hoping they will get more money as they get older and just go ahead and buy a Mac.

So Apple isn't worried about us stealing their OS to run on PC's or else they would make it harder for us to crack.

Oct 15, 07 - 09:44 am Comment from: Jeff

I don't think Apple can announce until after the quarterly financial report is made public, I believe they are in a quite period till then.

Apple will host a webcast discussing fourth quarter financial results on October 22, 2007 at 2:00 p.m PDT / 5:00 p.m. EDT.

The price of macs are going down in general. I bought a 17 inch PB for over 3000 4 years ago (and it is still running). Now the equivalent model is 2600. You can get a 15 inch MBP for 1800 if you look around. Get the previous model for a discount.

If your business requires a mac then the upgrade of your computer will be worth it in terms of efficiency. Plus you can probably put some of the costs against tax.

Oct 15, 07 - 09:54 am Comment from: Frankie Goes to Cupertino

I checked out the site with the torrent link. The magic (anti-spam) word over there is "relax".

Frankie say "DON'T DO IT!"

@ChrissyOne

"So which is it? You can afford the software but not the computer to run it? Are you a very good photographer?"

I take pictures of accidents, should I elaborate?

I needed a small, reliable OS X based laptop with a matte screen to upload photos for about $1000.

I don't need a laptop like a MPB that cost 3x as much as a MB just to get a matte screen because I might drop the thing tripping over a piece of wreckage or something.

I'm looking at getting a ToughBook as my next PC if I'm going to spend the big bucks.

Oct 15, 07 - 10:06 am Comment from: Quevar

to OS X on PC:

I at least hope you are paying for the version that is running on your non Mac. Not stealing, but you are breaking the EULAgreement with Apple.

On a more practical note, running important work on an unsupported configuration probably isn't the smartest thing to do. When it eventually fails, don't expect to get any sympathy.

Also, the MacBook is a consumer machine, so don't expect it to do everything you want as a profesional photographer. By the way, you did have a choice about which computer to buy and you chose not to buy the MacBook Pro with a Matte screen. Don't make it look like Apple is forcing you to buy anything. That attitude is as stupid as the one that people are suing Apple because they dropped the iPhone price.

"Apple wants their OS to be stolen and run on PC's...." Really? Did I miss the press announcement where they told everyone to go out and steal their intellectual property? That seems like a fairly bad business strategy to me if you want to make money.

Stop trying to justify your actions to make yourself look like the victim. At least admit that you are breaking the law. That is the choice you made. It is the exact same choice that anyone here that decided download and use the BitTorret of the OS X Leopard GM made.

maybe you should consider an other line of work, if you are not doing well enough to afford a "professional" machine"

"I take pictures of accidents, should I elaborate?"

Yes. That's what my father does, actually. He's a traffic investigator for Kitsap County. I'm seen some really awful things...

If you buy a Macbook Pro, you get significantly more for your money that a matte screen. I think working on photos on a Macbook is kinda slumming, but I like a bigger monitor myself.

"I'm looking at getting a ToughBook as my next PC if I'm going to spend the big bucks."

I don't see why you'd do that if you have a big investment in Mac software. You can afford an expensive PC but not an expensive Mac? Okay.

Did you cheap out on your camera, too?

How is this 3x more than $1000?

Oct 15, 07 - 10:24 am Comment from: OS X on PC

"I at least hope you are paying for the version that is running on your non Mac. "

Nope, becaue it had to be cracked so obviously I got the cracked version.

I guess I could go buy a copy of 10.5 when it's released, but I think the money is better spent on new software under Vista when it improves.

"By the way, you did have a choice about which computer to buy and you chose not to buy the MacBook Pro with a Matte screen. Don't make it look like Apple is forcing you to buy anything."

Well what happened is I got caught in a OS AND A HARDWARE lockin.

Now if I was running XP I could just switch hardware vendors and got a $1000 laptop PC with a matte screen which I need no problem. Install XP and my apps and been running just fine, although a crappy OS experience compared to OS X which I'm used to using all these years.

So my experience goes to show the dangers of a hardware lockin.

Apple shoves glossy displays down your neck and you just have to pony up 3x for a matte screen MBP or hit the highway.

Even if the $1000 MacBook with a matte screen was a few hundred dollars more than a glossy I would have gotten it because it's worth it. But $3000 isn't worth it for what I do.

Thats a great idea, hasta la Vista

"How is this 3x more than $1000?"

You forgot 7% tax and AppleCare. (no I'm not going tax free mail order as they damage computers during shipping)

Got to have AppleCare for a laptop especially. Then you need a case to protect the $3000 computer and they go for $100.

So it adds up to about $3000.

When a $1000 (or less) PC does the job and if it's trashed it's not that big of a loss compared to a $3000 MBP. Plus I don't have to baby it.

Like I said, if the matte screen MB was a few hundred more than the glossy I would have gotten it.

But Apple didn't offer that option, they just decided to force anyone who needed a matte screen to upgrade to expensive MBP where they make huge profits.

Same thing with the iMac's. Forcing pro's to get a Mac Pro.

@OS on PC: 1999 = 3*1000? The cheapest MacBook Pro is $1999, only $900 more than the cheapest MacBook but you get a lot more.

"...it had to be cracked so obviously I got the cracked version." I'm glad to see you admit that you are obviously a thief. Do you mind if I steal your photos and use them as my own? Obviously you do not.

If you really don't need a very powerful machine and definitely need a Matte, go check out eBay. I found three 12" PowerBooks for under $500, well under your budget that would work great for what you need. And you wouldn't have to worry about breaking them since they are relatiely inexpensive.

You must be using the New Math, because I get $2,512.36. And, you nicely neglect to add Apple Care to the price of the Macbook, and when you do, and add another Gig of RAM (I don't care who you are, you need 2GB to use Photoshop in any sort of successful way), your $1,000 Macbook comes to $1,602.86. So the Pro is 900 bucks more.

And for that matter, you don't add any extended warranty into the PC price, either. Or do you think you don't need it on a Toughbook?

You still can't add.

"What a great explanation of thief logic: I need it, so I take it."

"I'm glad to see you admit that you are obviously a thief. Do you mind if I steal your photos and use them as my own? Obviously you do not."

Apple made the decision to discontinue MacBooks with a matte screens and force us to buy expensive MacBook Pro's instead using their OS and our investment in Mac OS X software as a leverage.

They could have decided to offer the matte option for a little more or for some time to give us warning but didn't. So who fscked who?

I'm just trying to make a living, not get gouged by Apple marketing decisions.

"If you really don't need a very powerful machine and definitely need a Matte, go check out eBay. I found three 12" PowerBooks for under $500, well under your budget that would work great for what you need."

Why pay that when I got a brand new PC for a few hundred dollars more and a warranty? Plus it's Intel duo core instead of a PPC single processor?

You see now what Apple has created? A mess.

It's because they arbitrarily just switch hardware specs and say this is the "new thing" and "your going to buy it"

Oct 15, 07 - 11:13 am Comment from: ChrissyOne

"You see now what Apple has created? A mess."

"$2,512.36, $1,602.86. So the Pro is 900 bucks more."

Well the PC I got was under $1000. came with a 3 year warranty and has a matte screen. Runs Mac OS X just fine. Don't plan on updating the OS either in the shortterm. Will switch to XP or Vista so I have a larger range of hardware choices, Toughbook or cheap. My choice, not what Apple decides with a OS lockin.

I've learned my lesson.

I'm done.

"I'd still love to hear about your camera. Where did you get it, Sears?"

I know this will sound cheap, but I got my Kodack camera at Staples.

It did cost over 500 dollars US.

The reason I got it was because batteries, replacement parts and such are easily obtained at any Walmart all over the country which I travel constantly.

I don't need a high end camera or computer, it will just get broken from the abuse. Cheap, widely available and reliable is all I need.

Drive safely all. I speak from experience.
