Apple’s Macs are poised for major innovations
Thursday, July 03, 2008 - 10:49 AM EST

"I’ve been alluding to this for a few months now, but let me repeat: The Mac is poised for innovation over the next few years on a scale that we haven’t experienced since the initial move to OS X in the previous decade. After five years of focusing on new categories like the iPod and the iPhone while gradually improving its Mac product line, the company has now freed up the resources to strengthen its core and highest-revenue business: Macs. And at the same time, new technologies are emerging to take the Mac to the next level," Pete Mortensen writes for Cult of Mac.

Mortensen covers reasons why the Mac is poised for innovation:
• The Future of the iPod and iPhone Are Incremental Improvements
• The Architecture of Computing is Changing Dramatically
• Mac OS X Snow Leopard: Fully 64-Bit, Grand Central, Open CL
• The Entire Mac Line is Due For a Face Lift
• The iPod and the iPhone Have Put the Mac Back in the Spotlight
• Consumers Want New Macs

they should redo the mac pro, its kinda big

Jul 03, 08 - 09:54 am Comment from: anthonyoo7

The article says Macs are poised for major innovations and yet the article makes no mention what any of them might be.

Jul 03, 08 - 09:56 am Comment from: whatever

I like my huge mac pro it looks nice I also have a G5 I love the tall towers more room for air, RAM and harddrives.

Jul 03, 08 - 10:02 am Comment from: ron

@whatever, I suggest getting an IBM 360 enclosure , then put your G5 inside it. Really big!

Jul 03, 08 - 10:12 am Comment from: @whatever

Hard drives??? The future belongs to SSD. First, they'll replace hard drives, then over time, they'll be integrated into the motherboard. Think innovation.

Jul 03, 08 - 10:12 am Comment from: Zeke

@Anthonyoo7:

Try looking up the ZFS file system. That's just one item on the list.

Jul 03, 08 - 10:16 am Comment from: Roberto

My Mac Pro has 4 hard drives for 2.5 TB of easily accessible storage.

Jul 03, 08 - 10:18 am Comment from: Lladnar

He's spot on. And he's smart not to make predictions, but I'm not as smart so here's a couple of predictions for 2009/2010 computer releases:

• Striped SSD's for blinding-fast data recall from storage.
• A Tablet Laptop
• Much thinner laptops across the board

this article says absolutely nothing

Jul 03, 08 - 10:25 am Comment from: Ha, ha, ha

Been "hearing" and "reading" about full resolution independence for years. Either Apple can't or won't make this a reality. So much for Apple innovation.

Jul 03, 08 - 10:44 am Comment from: Macaday

Sorry ha ha ha, but the ha ha ha is on you, Apple has never promised resolution independence, even if it has been speculated upon.

But, just ask yourself why Microsoft, Nokia, HP, Dell etc etc etc can't even see the tail lights of the Apple innovation juggernaut...??

Jul 03, 08 - 10:52 am Comment from: Jay-Z

@ Macaday:

I thought resolution independence was to be included in Leopard early on but was then modified or axed during development.

Jul 03, 08 - 10:57 am Comment from: dallas

"The future belongs to SSD. First, they'll replace hard drives, then over time, they'll be integrated into the motherboard"

I hadn't thought about that. While this makes less sense for a MacPro -hard drives are regularly replaced- think about the air! Who's for a 1/4 inch thick computer! WOW!

Jul 03, 08 - 11:00 am Comment from: MacLovin

I want a Brushed Aluminum macbook! and a brushed aluminum Mini!!!

Jul 03, 08 - 11:01 am Comment from: HolyMackerel

Snow Leopard is going to more for the Mac Pro than any other computer in the Mac line. Once the OS is multi-core and GPU optimised and application calls make use of us, the Mac Pro (and possibly the X-Serve) should fly for CPU-intensive and RAM-intensive workstation-level applications.

Look for Mac Pro demonstrations in the Keynote in SF in Jan 2009.

Jul 03, 08 - 11:31 am Comment from: Chris

How about some major optimization for power efficiency! If I could have the processing power of my Mac Pro but it only uses the electricity of a 20w light bulb, that would be awesome!

Jul 03, 08 - 11:39 am Comment from: Spock

Wow! That article was really informative, and really insightful. I mean, I would never have known that Macs were going to jump up a quantum leap as a result of all this stuff if it wasn't for this article! And never before have I seen all this information pointing to the future of Macs compiled into one place. Thanks, MDN, for writing this article for me! I have so much hard info to act on as a result of reading this article.

The "Next BIG thing"

You know... The reason Apple is turning our focus towards Snow Leopard is that they have actually begun work on the next "major thing".

All the OS X "feature people" are now working hard on the next (multi touch) OS that will soon be introduced as the ("Lion") king of all OS´s

With Apple´s history of secracy we all know they can´t say that the next big transition is allready under way.

Somehow they need to disguize the progress and find a way to prepare the next multi-touch hardware and software wave to be compatteble.

This thing takes time and therefore all major software programmers at Apple is now hard at work to make this happen.

Therfore the" feature-less" Snow leopard and the early info from Apple about its presence. - Because it will take a lot of work and time... They are preparing us not to get impatient and dissapointed with the speed of new "things" coming from Apple.

I do think we will see Snow Leopard as a reallity, but behind the scenes they will soon have it´s succseser ready - "Lion"

I could be wrong...

@MacLovin

I thought the Mac mini was already partly brushed aluminium.

This article is saying just what I was saying ages ago (before MacWorld).

Macaday,

Click the following links, my ignorant fanboi.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/06/10/24/resolution_independence_in_leopard_confirmed_by_apple.html

http://www.eunisan.com/whatever/appleemail.htm

Well, its been two years now and still nothing to deliver. Looks like the great innovator has hit a brick wall - hard and head first, kinda like you. However, being a fanboi, you probably didn't notice.

Jul 04, 08 - 01:41 am Comment from: Apple

"I want a Brushed Aluminum macbook! and a brushed aluminum Mini!!!"

Relax, Hipster. We'll tell you when it's ready.

Jul 04, 08 - 02:00 am Comment from: Innovation

The major "Innovation" is the abandonment of progress in the PC market, except as a hardware supplier and the re-focusing of the OS towards portable devices.

Why else do you think you are getting No New Features in the desktop version? Just like the initial delay in Leopard shipping, the teams are busy elsewhere.

Jul 04, 08 - 03:00 am Comment from: bioness

The article is telling us to think bigger...

I think the concept of computing will change. Rather than having modules upon modules to connect with each other, we're probably looking at an OS that is able to write programs for your needs.

ie, iGoogle and cloud computing. Imagine being able to create your own cloud computing unit in your own home, and just have a display and keyboard/mouse to connect to it. And the computer is capable of calculating the limitations of that device...

Jul 04, 08 - 10:16 am Comment from: Amusing

"we're probably looking at an OS that is able to write programs for your needs."

You're right, because Snow Job Leopard is also going to ship with a domestic robot and a flying car in the box. Those are the secret new features.

Jul 04, 08 - 11:32 am Comment from: Ha, ha, ha

bioness,

I'd be happy with an OS that isn't glacially slow, can download PDFs easily, doesn't have disappearing scroll bars in Safari, and has moveable text boxes.

I hope that Apple will eliminate current bugs and problems, and not simply promise some ambiguous features in the indefinite future.
