Apple’s monster: iTunes App Store hits 500 million downloads and 15,000 apps milestones
Friday, January 16, 2009 - 11:50 AM EST

"About six weeks ago, after reading the fine print on an Apple Inc. ad for its online applications download store, the App Store, I noticed some pretty stunning numbers: that Apple customers had downloaded 200 million apps since the store had opened, and 100 million apps in just six weeks," Jim Goldman reports for CNBC.

"Well, here we are six weeks later, and once again the fine print on an App Store ad in today's USA Today, Wall Street Journal and New York Times holds some hidden treasures," Goldman reports. "Do the math and you'll see that a total of 500 million apps have now been downloaded, or 200 million over the past six weeks, doubling the download pace of the preceding six weeks."

Goldman reports, "Back on December 5, an ad stated that there were 10,000 apps available. Today, that figure has swelled to 15,000."

"The potential of this store seems enormous, and its success seems to be gaining momentum far more quickly than even the most optimistic analysts out there projected," Goldman reports. "This is the kind of fundamental that separates Apple from so many of its smart phone competitors."

"Not all the Apps generate revenue. But that doesn't matter. Free or not, App Store becomes just another reason for consumers to choose iPhone over BlackBerry and Palm and Nokia," Goldman reports.

Ad says iPhone users have down loaded 500 million apps. Does this not include Touch users?

For years the "smart" people in the cell phone business kept everything for themselves; trying to sell add-on trinkets like ring tones and text messages. Along comes Steve and decides to share the platform with anyone with a good idea, taking only 30% for Apple. Boom! The possibilities are almost endless.

Vision and courage to risk it all. Long live Steve Jobs.

Is that individual downloads or does it include downloads of updated versions? What if you delete an app entirely and then redownload it?

Jan 16, 09 - 12:21 pm Comment from: KenC

@MXNT41, why do people always ask this question. It makes no sense to include updates. It would make the download number, utter nonsense. I imagine if you delete an app and redownload it, it still only counts once, as your iTunes account remembers your downloads. It would just assume you erased it by mistake.

Where, the system is actually missing users is if you have more than one device synced to your account. I have an iPhone 3G, and my g/f has an iPod Touch which I gave her for Xmas. Both our devices are synced to my account. So, I pay once for an app, and get to load it on two devices. Costs me half, but now two devices are using the app. So, I think the total downloads number is undercounting those people like myself who load apps on multiple devices.

I'm sure it includes Touch users but Apple did that on purpose: the iPhone has more 'stickiness' than the Touch. It's a more complete compliment to your life as it has phone features too. Apple's hoping you'll buy iPhone rather than the Touch so it's the 1 item you'll always carry with you.

To date, I have downloaded 237 iPhone apps and spent a grand total of $40. Talk about bang for the buck!

15000 iPhone/touch apps. Makes me wonder how many mac apps there are? It would be interesting to see when the iPhone/touch becomes a bigger platform than the mac based on the number of available apps.

The question above about upgrades is interesting. I'm assuming that the number comes from initial purchases.

Jan 16, 09 - 02:07 pm Comment from: Cubert

3rdKidney,
Several years ago Steve Jobs said that there were over 20,000 apps for the Mac platform. So, it's gotta be higher than that now.

I sync 4 iPhones to one iTunes account so it helps justifying a $10 game for my kids. But man, is there a ton of sh*t on the app store or what? I use App Sniper to view new apps everyday and today Apple released 552 new apps! How many made it onto my phone. Zero.

When you've downloaded 128 apps, like I have, you start to get choosier.

Jan 16, 09 - 06:36 pm Comment from: KingMel

I got to use an iPod touch over the holidays during the family gathering. I was hooked almost instantly. This device is incredible and, unlike any other portable that I have seen, it doesn't cost $15 or $20 or more for an application. Most can be purchased for $4.99 or less...many for much less. And there are quite a few that are quite good even though they are free/lite versions.

I bought one for my wife. Put a GPS in the iPod touch and I would buy one too.

Jan 17, 09 - 12:33 am Comment from: KenC

that applies to picking up girls, not downloading computer games.

Some might say that, if you have downloaded 128 tip calculators and Mahjong Memory games and to do lists, you are the least capable of being choosy.
