Apple’s new 13-inch MacBook Pro tops Amazon’s list of bestselling computers
Monday, June 29, 2009 - 11:29 AM EDT

Apple Online Store"Netbooks have started to fall out favor recently — as witnessed by reports of return rates as high as 30% and an NPD study that found that 60% of consumers who bought them didn’t understand the difference between a netbook and a notebook," Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

"Meanwhile, Apple announced on June 8 that it was refreshing its notebook line and lowering its prices," Elmer-DeWitt reports. "Result: its computers have become hot sellers on Amazon once again."

"Apple’s entry-level 13-inch unibody... MacBook Pro, has been one of Amazon’s top 100 bestsellers for 20 days — basically since the moment it went on sale. As of Monday morning, it was the site’s No. 4 bestselling computer overall and No. 1 in the laptop category," Elmer-DeWitt reports. "In fact, three of the top 10 and five of the top 20 bestselling laptops on Amazon are now MacBooks."

I bought two.

Five of the top 20? Isn't that all of them?

Jun 29, 09 - 11:43 am Comment from: freebeer

I've stopped going into Apple store now since every time I see it I want one, and I've only just bought a 15-in MBP less than 12 months ago. Damn you Apple!

Now if they just shrink it down to 10-11 in, add a much bigger trackpad or make the glass touch capable, and we'll have...

'Cause we don't know how to make junk!!!!

....something silly?

Jun 29, 09 - 11:58 am Comment from: Apelock

Yes, netbooks ARE junk. Where are the fools clamoring for Apple to build one now?

Jun 29, 09 - 12:03 pm Comment from: NHL

The theme of Microsoft's next ad campaign:

"Everyone else has a Mac.
You should strive to be different, a loner, a stand-out in the crowd.
You should buy a Windows-only computer -
You'll be the only one!"

Congratulations Apple for muddying the waters between Netbook and Notebook! wink

Jun 29, 09 - 12:19 pm Comment from: DH

There's no " muddying " of the water between netbooks and notebooks. Go to a store and touch and feel the product and watch it's performance. Read the specs. People are initially attracted to netbooks because of their portability and price. Once they see the performance, they realize it's a product for a niche market and not a good general purpose computer. Once you play with the 13" MacBook, you realize what you really should purchase.

I won't buy any computer with a glossy screen.

I won't live in the dark like some troll just to eliminate those bothersome reflections.

I let my feelings know here and so should you as Apple is monitoring this site.

god forbid anyone write something that is unfavorable to Apple, or the MDN gods will take it down.

@judgejudy

buy a an anti-glare film and stop the whining. enough of that already.

I went by the Apple Store yesterday and looked at all of the laptops. The new Macbook Pro series is incredible - it embodies most everything that people have been seeking for years. Given current technology, it is close to perfection.

I also saw the older Macbook that is still for sale. I know that Apple has continued to improve its specs and it is resonably comparable to the low end Macbook Pro, but it just doesn't have the siren call of the new unibodies.

It's just a matter of time before I pry open the wallet...

Jun 29, 09 - 01:16 pm Comment from: Macaday

@ judgejudy,

You are just a very loud and irritating MINORITY on the screen issue and we are not interested.

Jun 29, 09 - 02:03 pm Comment from: Liopaapa

@Macaday- some people need their own Vietnam to feel like they're making a difference. It gives a sense of importance, although it's pretty much self-importance and hollow. Let the man have his Vietnam!

Jun 29, 09 - 02:05 pm Comment from: Geo B

Funny, I've been using my MBP 15" 2.2 GHz for two years, and can count on one hand how often I've noticed glare from my glossy screen. When I do, I adjust the angle on the display about 10 degrees and get to work.

@judgejudy - don't like 'em, don't buy 'em. Complain to Apple, we are tired of hearing it and can't do anything about it. Do something that makes a difference, or STFU.

*end soapbox*

Thanks for the suggestion, judgejudy.

Just in case Apple monitors this site: I think the Apple "glossy screens" are gorgeous. By now I have several of them. Both literally and figuratively they brighten my days.

Jun 29, 09 - 02:55 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

It's starting to look as though Apple was smart not to jump into the netbook cesspool. Eventually, I'd suspect that Apple will release some type of iPod touch mega, but we'll all have to wait and see for that one.

Why do you people attack those who prefer a matte screen to glossy. It's a legitimate gripe. Supposedly the preference split is somewhere around 50%, hardly a tiny minority. There's no reason why Apple can't offer a build-to-order matte option on at least the 15" MBP.

If Apple refuses to offer 15" matte option, the next time I upgrade, I'll probably be forced to try some anti-glare film.

Apple nailed the ideal Netbook dimensions with the Macbook Air. Now years later the Netbook market is heading that way.

Skate to where the puck will be!

'judgejudy' aka Medusa.

You'd avoid a glossy screen too. smile

Jun 29, 09 - 07:58 pm Comment from: MacMatte

The following are quotes from http://macmatte.wordpress.com

"Those people – who point to Apple’s upward growth as vindication of the glossy-only policy – are not taking into account that most of the impetus to switch to Apple comes from other factors, namely: the window of opportunity created by Microsoft Vista’s inadequacies, the halo effect of the iPod/iPhone, and from OSX’s perceived advantages over Windows Vista/XP. All these factors combined mean that, even if a substantial number of people detest glossy screens, Apple’s sales figures would still show an upward trend – not because everyone loves glossy screens … but in spite of it."

"[A recent MacRumors poll showed that] if given freedom of choice, ... 46.16% prefer matte. ... 18.68% would not buy glossy."

This means that if Apple offered the matte option, its sales could have been even greater.

In reply to Macaday, you claim matte-loves are a minority, albeit a loud minority. As I said, above, the MacRumors June 2009 poll shows 46% prefer matte. This is not a once off result. See http://macmatte.wordpress.com at comment No. 13 where over a dozen polls are reviewed, and they all indicate at least a 40% preference for matte. Sure, that's a minority, i.e. less than 50%, but the only reason it is a loud minority is because 40% is a massive number.

I haven't purchased a new MacBook since the original Intel 15" MBPro, which has a matte screen and I still use almost daily. My son had a choice when he bought his MBPro, and chose glossy. I now own several iMacs with glossy screens and have been using an iPhone for two years which is obviously glossy. I've never had an issue with reflections. The truth is that Apple's monitors are much brighter than they used to be and eliminate almost all reflections when turned on. In my experience the glossy screens work better in more environments than the matte screens did. Matte screens are vulnerable to total washout in bright light, like outdoors.

Question (I really don't know the answer): Which laptop manufacturers provide matte vs glossy screen options?
