Apple’s new 2G iPod touch VoIP capable; free or low-cost phone calls over Wi-Fi
Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 02:47 PM EDT

"The newest version of Apple’s iPod Touch contains the hardware necessary to enable free or low-cost phone calls over wi-fi," Lonnie Lazar reports for Cult of Mac.

"The device now supports the external microphone included with some headsets," Lazar reports.

"TruPhone, a venerable innovator in the VoIP field, already has an iPhone application in the AppStore. Apple has said it would not permit applications that run VoIP using cellular networks, but a purely wi-fi-based calling method could pass muster," Lazar reports.

iPhone killer?

Sep 11, 08 - 03:04 pm Comment from: Fred Mertz

opal,

Yeah, when fast free Wi-Fi access becomes ubiquitous. Until then, no.

iPhone killer?

Probably not. Not until Wi-Max or something similar comes alone. The big advantage of the iPhone is nearly everywhere internet along with a cell phone.

Hmmm, it just work for people that are in one place most of the day. I just might get rid of my land line.

Even when WiMax or something similar becomes available, Apple will have likely already put support for it into their products. Apple doesn't care in the slightest what form of radio energy is used, they are using cell technology because it's the only thing that's available for ubiquitous access. They don't even care about VOIP, it's only the contract with AT&T;that makes them say no to it on the cell network.

Apple wants to sell you communicators. What technology they have to put in it to make it work is completely irrelevant other than the practical needs of the day.

I looked at Truphone and they claim to be low cost but they're not really that low for VOIP. I hoped that iCall would be out soon but even though it's got some better and cooler features than Truphone, again the prices aren't that cheap. :(
To me the cheapest and simplest VOIP that I've found that's semi portable if you have access to a Mac/PC is MagicJack that uses the TigerJet hardware I believe. I sure wish that someone could come up with a hack so I can use my MJ account on wifi w/my iPhone. smile

The iPod Touch and the iPhone could merge one day... cut out the phone carriers...

Sep 11, 08 - 04:17 pm Comment from: ElderNorm

I believe that Vonage has an account add on that lets you add pc anywhere phone for a small extra charge.

I have their $25 per month service and it has worked great for over 5 years. I just never needed the pc with you addition.

If you check it out, let me know if its worth it. grin

Just a thought.

Is it really that hard for Skype to do their job and come out with an app?

Sep 11, 08 - 05:16 pm Comment from: zek

Yes, skype or something like it would be good, and free for calls to other touch/iPhone users, and anyone on a computer too. The 'cheap' ones are ok for calling phones, but VOIP is really about free peer to peer calling.

Sep 11, 08 - 06:27 pm Comment from: JimAtJaxtr

VoIP really is changing the telecom game. It's already shaking up the international calling market with services like jaxtr, SkypeOut, and others. What it will do to domestic calling on handheld mobile phones will be interesting to watch?

Sep 11, 08 - 08:32 pm Comment from: eon

We currently have "free" phone calls with Mobile to Mobile calling. It would be nice especially for those that use international calling to have global iPhone to iPhone calling. Cross carrier but device specific calling. -- Hey, I have a good name for it too:

iClub.

This is one of the advantages to having a single carrier supporting the iPhone. iPhone to iChat (jabber, SIP, etc ) would seem to be the next step. I'm curious if a small video camera could be made on a dongle that would connect to the iPod dock connector for iPhone and iPod Touch users.

Sep 11, 08 - 08:34 pm Comment from: eon

Even better on the face forward camera idea. It could be included in a sled that would also feature battery backup.

Sep 12, 08 - 12:50 pm Comment from: LiM

What's holding up the forward-facing camera, greed?
