Apple’s new multi-banner ‘Get a Mac’ Web ad: ‘PC Newswire’ (with video)
Monday, June 16, 2008 - 07:53 PM EDT

Apple is running a new Web-based multi-banner campaign on The Onion and other online media outlets.

In the new ad, the "PC" played by John Hodgman, touts his new overhead banner, "PC NEWSWIRE," that features "ALL PC NEWS, ALL THE TIME" - in other words brief quotes pertaining to Vista's total suckage. Poor PC, he hates his stupid newswire:

Direct link via YouTube here.

The video ends with the text, "Upgrade to Mac. Leave your PC headaches behind - switch to Mac OS X Leopard. Check out the world's most advanced operating system today." A button labeled "Take the guided tour" is then presented to the viewer.

MDN: get a new web-programmer....your front page problems are getting ridiculous....its been, what 4+ days?

Jun 16, 08 - 08:31 pm Comment from: Arnold Ziffel

No!

Don't get a new programmer. Keep the temporary homepage as the

new one--the old one takes forever to load on my iPhone.

We here on the farm LOVE the new homepage.

caddisfly;

Whatever it is that you're talking about, it isn't apparent on my iMac, MacBook Pro or iPhone.

sixvodkas:

you're not seeing the semi-permanently temporary home page?

I'd vote for keeping it as well....just get rid of the "sorry we are too dumb to figure out our own code" message and no one will know the diff.....its looking kinda windoze-like after 4 days

To be honest, I don 't care about your home page - I come in from the RSS feed.

However, why do the articles' URLs from the RSS feed have a text name - e.g., the URL for this page is "http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/apples_new_get_a_mac_web_ad_pc_newswire_with_video/", whereas the URLs from the current home page, and the article history at the bottom of this page is "http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/17582/"

Seems like someone is making extra work for themselves.

Jun 16, 08 - 09:23 pm Comment from: Walter Chillum

What the hell, it loads faster, much faster.

Jun 16, 08 - 10:12 pm Comment from: ragarcia

qka,

I think its because the RSS feed takes you to a less banner ad heavy page, at least that is what happens to me when I access it via the iPhone.

Jun 16, 08 - 10:27 pm Comment from: loki

I just wish there were longer excerpts in the RSS feed... guess it's harder to make money if you're not foced to be subjected to all of these wonderful ads...

Jun 16, 08 - 10:42 pm Comment from: mike

loki

you really think anyone clicks on these ads?

pfft..

Kill the old home page!! Have a new one!!

What about a laptop opening up to reveal a screenful of stuff? wink

I, too, prefer the new "temporary" home page. In fact, temporary home pages run very deep in my family.

How difficult can it be to figure it out? Just strip eveything out then add things back until the problem occurs. I know there can be other complications but these problems are stupid.

Jun 17, 08 - 09:42 am Comment from: DizzyD

Awwwwwww crap. The full "home" page is back. :-(

And here I was getting used to not waiting around for the page to load on my iPhone.

Jun 17, 08 - 09:45 am Comment from: hairy buyer

The ad is running on the front page of the Toronto Star, one must click on the arrow to run it.
It appears as an ad for Microsoft Office, which I hope Micro will appreciate.

Jun 17, 08 - 09:53 am Comment from: Jamie

I wish MDN would heed the advice from everyone and STOP the adverts. I mean, yeh OK, some adverts are inevitable, everyone has to make a living right? But MDN, you must have 30-40 adverts on your home page, it's too much.

Jun 17, 08 - 09:55 am Comment from: JoshtheiMacGuy

Very good! I always enjoy these advertisements. It's fun watching them on my iMac!!

Jun 17, 08 - 10:36 am Comment from: Ray

MDN - I have always had problems with the index page when it tries to load local advertisements.

Back to business. I saw the add on CNN. It rocks!

I hope Apple uses the Willy Wonka method to select Steve Jobs successor. Golden tickets in select Apple products! A wondrous tour through the Apple factory. Singing and dancing by the Apple-lumpas. Then the truth is revealed and the successor is named.

"Singing and dancing by the Apple-lumpas."

NICE ! ! grin
