Apple’s new MacBook Air TV commercial and guided tour (with video)
Tuesday, January 15, 2008 - 05:53 PM EST

Apple today unveiled MacBook Air, the world's thinnest notebook. MacBook Air measures an unprecedented 0.16-inches at its thinnest point, while its maximum height of 0.76 inches is less than the thinnest point on competing notebooks. MacBook Air has a stunning 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display, a full-size and backlit keyboard, a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing, and a spacious trackpad with multi-touch gesture support so users can pinch, rotate and swipe. MacBook Air is powered by a 1.6 GHz or 1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4MB L2 cache, and includes as standard features 2GB of memory, an 80GB 1.8-inch hard drive, and the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth 2.1.

MacBook Air has a vibrant 13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display that is energy efficient, and its spacious trackpad offers multi-touch gesture support for pinch, rotate and swipe, making it more intuitive than ever to browse and rotate photos or zoom into web pages in Safari. MacBook Air features a full-size keyboard design in a sleek and durable aluminum enclosure. The backlit keyboard makes it ideal for dimly lit environments such as airplanes, studios or conference halls, and a built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness of the keys as well as the display brightness for optimal visibility.

MacBook Air delivers up to five hours of battery life for wireless productivity and includes AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi networking, which delivers up to five times the performance and twice the range of 802.11g. Apple's Migration Assistant software now enables users to quickly transfer files, applications and preferences from your old Mac to MacBook Air right over your wireless network.

How thin is MacBook Air? Apple's new 30-second TV commercial shows just how ultra-thin it really is:

Who is that singing?

Jan 15, 08 - 05:56 pm Comment from: Comparison

The stack of $20 bills required for this skinny thing is thicker.

And much more so if you want a real drive.

No thanks.

Jan 15, 08 - 05:57 pm Comment from: cptnkirk

This ad is about as thin as the machine! Wow! Simplicity itself.

Jan 15, 08 - 06:02 pm Comment from: Niche

Steve doesn't care what you think about the price. He knows the market for this isn't big - that's not the point dunderheads.

"Thinest on the planet." That's what this is and nothing more. Obsessive arrogance results in these kinds of 'great products'.

Hope the swipe feature appears on my macbook. Hate clicking the back button while web surfing.

Niche,

I think it's great --perfect for what I need a laptop for. Nothing to do with "obsessive arrogance." I'll be buying one.

Peace out

Jan 15, 08 - 06:15 pm Comment from: Jubei

Very very nice piece of engineering. I can't wait to get one. The fit and finish is above and beyond the DELLs, HP and Sony. The way Apple incorporates the iSight camera, mic and indicator light is thought out with quality of finish in mind. Even the power plug and the ports. Amazing how they really thought out the product designs. No wimpy processor here and right of the bat, 2 gb or RAM. Apple really teaches when it comes to design engineering.

Jan 15, 08 - 06:16 pm Comment from: MikeK

I think the thing is absolutely amazing, I'll be buying one.

Jan 15, 08 - 06:18 pm Comment from: Ampar

The song is "New Soul" by Yael Naim. It's on the iTS.

Jan 15, 08 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Marto Varot

Where exactly do I put the firewire cable for transferring my user accounts using firewire target mode??

Jan 15, 08 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Hugo

I think the term obsessive arrogance was a complement, as only such OA can drive a team to create such nock out products time after time.

This product is about Apple signifying that they 'own' the laptop market, in terms of both design and innovation. It will also make a shed load of cash, and it is obviously a design cue for future macbook/pro styling.

It looks like the 'halo' effect is here for a while yet, god i knew our day would come. Even my IT guy nephew has capitulated and bought an iphone grin

The same place you put your floppy.

It works over Airport.
Watch the keynote.

Beautiful appearance, impressive enigineering effort, nice features. However, PRICEY just to shave off 3/8 inches of thickness and 2 lbs. I'm amazed they even ever so slightly increased the footprint (length & width) over the Macbook.
I'd take a maxed out Macbook for the money, 2.2gig processor, 4 gig ram, dvd burner, and far larger hard drive.
If I had money to burn, I'd get an M.B.air.

Jan 15, 08 - 06:51 pm Comment from: MB

I want that

Jan 15, 08 - 07:06 pm Comment from: Raymond from DC

While an incredible piece of engineering (typical Apple), this unit isn't right for all. For those not opting for the (very) expensive solid date disk, this will be the slowest Mac around (1.6 or 1.8 GHz CPU and 4200 RPM drive). No firewire, no optical, still only one year warranty.

Personally, I'm willing to carry an extra two pounds, as in the MBP, in order to get a faster CPU and disk, bigger screen, and optical. I'll save weight by using a minimalist bag, and loading my power supply and cable in my travel bag.

But for those who wanted, and are willing to pay the fare for, an ultra-lite Mac, the Air is very sweet.

Jan 15, 08 - 07:19 pm Comment from: G Spank

Gotta love the pop psych idiots who think they know the "inner workings" of Steve Jobs character.

Its simple. This laptop is ahead of its time, and what happens then is that most humans are too narcissistic to realize it. Open your eyes. This laptop is AWESOME. It's not a pro machine, it's a machine for your digital life - Internet, Photography, Music, etc. etc. and nothing else comes close for managing that on the go.

Jan 15, 08 - 07:31 pm Comment from: Ampar

Every traveling news reporter will want one.

Jan 15, 08 - 07:35 pm Comment from: Twenty Benson

This product is clearly for the ladies. Research has probably shown Apple that it has a healthy female market in the student sector but poor in the 30+'s. Ding-dong... this product - with its slim lines and gentle curves - has a specific market focus and that's why Apple brought in the Avon lady. Women hold positions of power and authority in business these days and if they become Apple 'fangurlz' through the elegance and femininity of targeted Apple products... the big enterprise kit might start following it into corporations.

This is a lady-killer boys... stick with your MacBookPros.

Jan 15, 08 - 08:13 pm Comment from: LorD1776

I have no need for one of these, but I'm sure others do. This would be nice as a second or third Mac for people who travel and need something light and compact. Less than an inch thick and three pounds! That's mighty sweet.

Jan 15, 08 - 08:14 pm Comment from: David

tz - your post makes no sense. If you had the money you would get an air, but if not then a macbook? Do you even know what you want?

A Macbook Air is underpowered and overpriced yet it is PERFECT for its target audience. Most people do there heavy lifting on a desktop but would like to check email, work on photos and such while away from there desk.

The Macbook Air is NOT competing against the Macbook, its competing against the iPhone/iPodTouch.

"Less than an inch thick and three pounds! That's mighty sweet."

That could be the strangest tag line for a porn movie ever.

"Less than an inch thick and three pounds! That's mighty sweet."

I did NOT catch that. I must be getting old. OK, older. That's sad.
And Ampar, yer a pervert. But a funny one.

I love the MacBook Air. Why? I am a biz traveler, size and weight matter in a big way. I will gladly buy one. Something that fits nicely in my case!

Jan 15, 08 - 08:55 pm Comment from: ChrissyOne

It will fit in my camera bag, FTW.

Jan 15, 08 - 09:54 pm Comment from: Ampar

Oh crap. There's the smell of diesel smoke again. Please sing louder.

Jan 15, 08 - 10:06 pm Comment from: Olmecmystic

I watched the entire keynote waiting for the MacBook Air. After seeing it, I don't get the impression that it's intended for the mass market. It's intended for a specific, targeted market.

Everybody who's not feeling it, guess what? It's not FOR you! Appreciate Apple's engineering skills and move on.

If you see it and instantly "get" it and consequently want one, guess what? You're the one they were after with this.

Pardon the pun, but all this conversation from the people who don't want it, like it or "get" it is wasted hot "air". Apple may now be approaching the point where they CAN target specific market segments with new products. We long-time fans may have to adjust our expectations as they pursue this.

You can win plenty of baseball games hitting singles, doubles, and triples; everything doesn't HAVE to be a home run in order to score more runs than the other team, and isn't that the end game, after all?

Apple is "laying brick" again, just like they were in the early 2000s, making preps for the NEXT big push. The iPhone? Home run. The Intel change? Home run. Panther, Tiger and Leopard? Outta the park. Is everything they do gonna be successful on that scale? Do they HAVE to be?

Apple is following a strategy; everybody else is following Apple. Same as it ever was.

Peace.

Jan 15, 08 - 10:20 pm Comment from: LCD is not LED

I noticed that Apple's website add says this machine has an LED display. WTF?

It has an LCD. Liquid Crystal Display

It's LCD is backlit with LEDs.

It does NOT have an LED display.LED displays can be seen all over the place in the form of billboards and other advertising signs and displays.

But, I guess we gotta dumb it down for Joe Consumer.

I wonder what phony BS Green Peace will come up with for this truly wonderful note book, I wait with poisoned pen to refute their crap.

Jan 16, 08 - 10:28 am Comment from: DJ Jac

It's brilliant.
If many buy a MacBook Air, it's successful, If no-one buys one, it's successful.
The ad(s) and bragging rights keep Apple at the top of the buzz, continuously in the consumer's consciousness.
Apple is riding a wave, and they're not getting tired and surfing in to shore for a rest.
Apple is just stepping from better board to better board, spectacular wave to more spectacular wave, and never giving the competition a chance to ride for the public, without Apple right there, way above them, looking fabulous and far superior.

Even the advertising agency shows no sign of slowing down.
The genius of the 'inter-office mail envelope' gives everyone an easy water-cooler conversation tag. - "Did you see that ad with the laptop in the envelope?!"
Plus, the context immediately gives the MacBook Air business/office legitimacy, while creative pros will automatically think of how easily that will fit into their camera bag.

Hmmm, I think this "Apple" company just might be someone to keep an eye on.
