Apple’s new MobileMe Calendar now out of beta and available to all MobileMe members

Apple MobileMe Internet ServiceApple’s new MobileMe Calendar is now out of beta and available to all members.

Here are the highlights of the new MobileMe Calendar:

• The best calendar service for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch: The new MobileMe Calendar works great with the built-in calendar app on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch by always keeping it in sync with your Mac or PC. New events or changes are automatically pushed to your iOS 4 devices so your calendar stays up to date. If you schedule a meeting on your device, that’s pushed everywhere too.

• Share calendars with family and friends: You can easily share your calendars with one or more MobileMe members to keep everyone on the same page. For example, create a shared calendar called “Family” for weekend activities. You can allow the person you’re sharing a calendar with to edit events, and you can set up email notifications to tell you when they make a change.

• Publish a calendar for a group or team: The new MobileMe Calendar lets you share a read-only public calendar, perfect for publishing an events calendar such as a soccer team schedule. After setting it up, you can send the team members a link to view the calendar on their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.

• Event invitations with RSVPs: You can also invite guests to an event from MobileMe Calendar. Just add their email address to the event (they don’t have to be a MobileMe member) and your guests will get an invitation email they can respond to directly by clicking a link. Your event then automatically updates, making it easy to track RSVPs right in your calendar.

• New web application: MobileMe Calendar includes a new web application at me.com with great-looking calendar views. You’ll find redesigned day, week, and month views, as well as a new list view to make scanning your events easier. The new web application works best with Safari 5, Firefox 3.6, and Internet Explorer 8.

System requirements for the new MobileMe Calendar:
• iPhone or iPod touch: iOS 4.1
• iPad: iOS 3.2; iOS 4.2 (coming in November) required for push calendar updates
• Mac: Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.4
• Windows PC: MobileMe Control Panel version 1.6.3 and Outlook 2007 or 2010

  1. It works on leopard if you add it within preferences like you would a google calendar use your me.com username for description and username, then https://cal.me.com for the server. The main downside is that mail doesn’t link the to do calendars together properly. Hopefully there will be an update to fix this with 10.6.5.

  3. The instructions about how to sync data and setup all of your calendars and devices go on for pages…At the end, there are more detailed instructions about how to eliminate duplicates… This still feels like a 1.0 release. I will wait awhile before implementing!

  5. For the first time ever, MobileMe Calendar Syncing is actually reliable, because it’s based on CalDAV. FINALLY Apple got calendar syncing right. Now they need to do the same thing to Address Book syncing and get it based on CardDAV.

  7. @ MacBill

From the CardDAV website: “Apple Address Book:
Included with Mac OS X 10.6
Desktop client for Mac OS X that supports CardDAV. Also provides CardDAV-based auto-complete to other apps via built-in APIs.”

It shouldn’t be too difficult to set up syncing with CardDAV.

  9. I use Busycal as my main calendar program.
I had just bought it when the MobileMe beta came out, so I had to wait for BusyMac to get their ducks in a row, which they did.

I spent about 20 minutes upgrading to their Busycal Beta, which syncs great with MobileMe, which syncs with my iPhone, and they all sync with my Google calendar that syncs one way to Outlook on my work PC.

I do this to keep up with several years of work so that I can call it up quickly to see when what was done where and why, not to mention alarms and to-dos.

It also allows co-workers to check my work calendars if needed.

It was not nearly as complicated as it sounds (unless I throw in that I have 9 different calendars split between work and home).

  11. I never pay more than $79 for MobileMe. Just buy the boxed version on Amazon and enter the code. Turn off auto-renewal and do the same thing each year. Less than $7/mo for everything or about 2 Starbucks coffees or just over 2 gallons of gas.
