Apple’s new Scottsdale Retail Store uses new design elements
Friday, June 12, 2009 - 03:05 PM EDT

"Apple's new Scottsdale Quarter retail store uses a radically different design in some respects, observers note. Ceilings in the building are approximately 20 feet high, and lined with a 75-foot long skylight, reducing dependence on artificial lighting. Aiding the skylight is an all-glass front and rear, permitting visitors to see directly through the store," MacNN reports.

"Inside the outlet is said to have a 50-foot Genius Bar, in theory allowing more customers to be served simultaneously while getting repairs or other help. Some of the shop will occasionally be set aside for Pro Labs, the training program devoted to professional Apple software such as Aperture, Logic and Final Cut. Doors are set to open this Friday night at 6PM," MacNN reports.

Jun 12, 09 - 03:28 pm Comment from: qka

Gee, my local Apple Store reduced the length of their Genius Bar by over 50% when they remodeled a year or so ago.

What makes those folks in AZ so special?

Jun 12, 09 - 03:33 pm Comment from: It's About Time

Wow, the anti-glossy screen contingent are just going to love this store. wink

Jun 12, 09 - 03:53 pm Comment from: Pyeman

Where's the stock room?

Jun 12, 09 - 03:54 pm Comment from: Spudly

Be great if it wasn't in the lamest state in the Union! I guess Apple's decided to target the escapist douche bag...with the perma tan & fake blonde "trophy" wife.

Apple should be able to save serious coin on the "Genius" Bar there by stocking it with 2nd graders!

Jun 12, 09 - 04:06 pm Comment from: blah blah blah...

the walls are the stock room. They open up like closets. No hanky panky at Apple stores, helps reduce the cost of sexual harassment law suites. You know apple wanting to keep cost down.

Jun 12, 09 - 04:07 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

"Where's the stock room?"

Heck, where's the restroom?! shock

Jun 12, 09 - 04:10 pm Comment from: @All clueless frigtards above

You guys just don't get it. Go back and look at the photos again. The store is open on the front and back, a departure from previous Apple Stores. It's stunning. To you snotty twits who don't like the Apple Store, buy online and shaddup already. As it is, Apple retail stores have higher sales per square foot than any other retail establishment in America. Even today. That's an amazing achievement.

It seems like nothing would make you losers and poseurs happy. I suppose you think the all-glass facade of the Apple New York City (midtown) store is lame too. That tells me you wouldn't know genius if it French kissed you. Deeply.

Now, I will have to wait for the obligatory snotty news release from those self-annointed buttheads at Greenpeace who will complain that the new Apple Scottsdale store isn't green enough. Just wait - they'll issue a news release, just like they did this week to complain that the new iPhone isn't green enough. I'd offer them a suggestion, but it would be unprintable. Frigtards.

I love it! They should build one of these suckers in my backyard so I can play with shiny new Apple toys everyday. Believe it! ™ snake

I think the design is awesome, but it seems like all that glass would not help the load on the air conditioning. But keeping it clean probably provides a full time job for someone. smile

Jun 12, 09 - 04:32 pm Comment from: Nathan

No kidding, Sir Bill.
I was just there on business, and the sun ought to be a major design factor. Maybe the larger neighbor is to the south. Still, glass is a crap insulator, especially the plate that they're certainly using, so this is a strikingly beautiful but stunningly stupid building.
Not very Apple. In fact, it reminds me of the "all style, no substance" argument we Mac users are so used to. OTOH, maybe the entire roof is PV and it's energy-nuetral. THAT would be more Apple.

Jun 12, 09 - 04:45 pm Comment from: ripper

Where you from, Spudly? Whatssamatter? They don't like your type in AZ? Can't say as I blame them. Jealous, judgemental ignoramuses don't really bring anything worthwhile to the scene...

Jun 12, 09 - 04:45 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@Nathan,

I'll bet some day they will be able to have glass that looks like that but will be solar panels to generate electricity.

It would be neat if they used a technology to turn the glass from transparent to reflective. I think Lincoln had this on some of their cars at one time. It made the windshield look opaque gold when turned on.

Jun 12, 09 - 05:34 pm Comment from: Cubert

The windows are so that other retailers can see how packed the Apple store is and how empty theirs is. Maybe they'll realize that there is something to the Mac platform and buy one.

Jun 12, 09 - 05:58 pm Comment from: Uncle Al

But it's a DRY heat.

"What makes those folks in AZ so special?"

Because AZ used to be the test ground for Nuclear testing. There are so many mutants and monsters running around, Arizonians need a break. I mean they finally got rid of the giant worms thanks to Kevin Bacon and friends. Yet who knows what else will crop up with all that radiation floating around.

Jun 12, 09 - 06:47 pm Comment from: Michael

My guess is they're using insulated and/or UV reflective glass.

<<Still, glass is a crap insulator, especially the plate that they're certainly using, >>

And your source for this is...

Hmm... I am educated, I work for a living, I am involved in Mac development... I must be an escapist douche bag. Tell you what, come escape with me hiking down the canyon or up the 13,000 peaks. If you can keep up with this douchebag then I guess you are right. And I have Irish skin so I'm definitely not out tanning.

Store looks great.

Jun 12, 09 - 07:44 pm Comment from: leodavinci

@Jubel,

Mexico was a nuclear testing state, not Arizona.

Now, as far as this new store is concerned, my only concern would be that Apple must have planned for this location before the current economic situation. Economy-wise, the real estate implosion in Scottsdale is probably the worst in the state, if not the country, and has been taking a number of retailers along with it. There is also a independent Mac retailer relatively close to this location (but as bad as the situation at Arrowhead Mall), so I have to wonder how that going to impact both places.

Jun 12, 09 - 07:52 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

"And I have Irish skin ..."

I'm not sure if that means it's Guinness hued, green, or just freckly. wink

"Mexico was a nuclear testing state, not Arizona."

Uh, nope. How about Alamogordo, New Mexico?

@ leodavinci

Really? How come all the B monster movies are done in Arizona? wink

Jun 12, 09 - 08:48 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@Jubei,

The best of them was 'Them!', although it was situated in New Mexico and was a AAA monster movie in my book. Good actors battling giant ants! Doesn't get any better than that, by golly. shock

Looks like San Tan Store ... nice, but big deal

building looks cool, didn't see a bathroom or stockroom, but I really don't care my new Safari4 ROCKS--who needs a progress bar?-almost all my page load in under 2 seconds--way to go apple! Unlike the IE shit at work, they have to keep waking me up when it finally loads a page!

Jun 13, 09 - 02:53 am Comment from: The right one

There is no air conditioning at this location. They are running cold water beneath the italian stone to cool it. This is the greenest store in Apples retail history.

Jun 13, 09 - 07:06 am Comment from: spyinthesky

That is modern, dynamic and beautiful. Sort of Apple Store Pro.

Jun 13, 09 - 12:33 pm Comment from: Sir Gill Bates

@Lord Byron,

Wow, thanks for that! Nice pics, and I really like your website.

Gawd, I wish I could have been there. That store is sweet!

With all the illegal aliens and their bastard spawn, Mexico might as well be one of those 57 states we apparently have. And here I never expected to see even 1 new state in my lifetime---I got to see seven!

Of course if Mexico were a state, that mean scads more people that this health coverage is supposed to take care of. Honestly, maybe we shoulda tested our nukes in Mexico instead of New Mexico. Would have been cheaper in the long run for the government and, by extension, taxpayers.
