Apple’s new Verizon-swatting iPhone ads (with video and schedule)
Monday, November 23, 2009 - 04:41 PM EDT

"Apple is launching two new iPhone ads on TV tonight. The ads are intended to tout the iPhone’s ability to hold a simultaneous voice and data connection at the same time, something you notably can’t do [on Verizon's network]," Arik Hesseldahl reports for BusinessWeek. "Here we see Apple doing its part as both a good AT&T partner, and touting a great feature of the iPhone all at once."

Hesseldahl reports, "The ads will appear tonight during 'House' on Fox, 'Dancing With The Stars' on ABC, 'How I Met Your Mother' on CBS and several others including 'The Daily Show' on Comedy Central and several of the late-night talk shows."

Ouch! That stings

Nov 23, 09 - 05:45 pm Comment from: HMCIV

Holy Cwap!!! That iPhone button pusher is fast. Let me give that a try on my Blackberry Storm...

Nov 23, 09 - 05:48 pm Comment from: neo

iPhone is the best phone all around no doubt but if you can't get on the network or even stay on the network than no, AT&T;can't do that. AT&T;needs to upgrade its network. What good is all of these great abilities if AT&T;can't service them up?

Nov 23, 09 - 05:50 pm Comment from: HughB

@HMCIV
Hope you are not on Verizon, or you will be trying for naught.

Nov 23, 09 - 05:51 pm Comment from: El Guapo

True to Apple's style!!

Nov 23, 09 - 05:53 pm Comment from: Randian

It is EVER thus: Start an advertising war mentioning your competitor by name, and watch out for the return volley. It will be ugly, withering, and economically devastating.

FYI: None of my smartphone-Verizon friends can or could defend not being able to call and data surf at the same time. And because they all live in well-served, metropolitan 3G areas (not in the hinterlands of Utah), they could offer no defense for the inapplicable Verizon ads.

Sure ATT ain't perfect, but anyone who thinks Verizon IS needs to run, not walk, to his nearest psychotherapist.

Nov 23, 09 - 05:54 pm Comment from: TheloniousMac

I'm sitting here in the heart of Los Angeles, the Hollywood Hills. I get a 4 bar AT&T;signal. I get nothing on this Droid loaner. So much for the Verizon network.

Nov 23, 09 - 05:54 pm Comment from: iLuvMyMacs

Let's say your on the phone with an important client- and let's say you drop the call, and let's say you call him back and drop the call again. Are you pissed off at your network?

Love the iPhone- hate AT&T;.

Nov 23, 09 - 05:55 pm Comment from: Handsome Smitty

Uh, the music BLOWS!!!

Wow, is the 3GS that quick? My 3G loads are much slower....

Nov 23, 09 - 05:57 pm Comment from: Brocktoon

I love this feature of the iPhone and use it a lot. Unfortunately, having that big, green bar across the top of the iPhone's screen that says "Touch to RETURN to call" is contradictory to the voice-over, which says, "without ever having to leave the call."

Why would you have to return to something you never left?

Again, I understand that the call keeps going, but I use this feature. I'm afraid that consumers who've never used the iPhone will be confused.

Nov 23, 09 - 05:58 pm Comment from: Quad Core

I am in the 'interlands of Utah' and I get reception

Nov 23, 09 - 05:59 pm Comment from: Darkness

To be fair to Verizon they never actually say "iPhone" anywhere. And the "Island of Misfit Toys" phone is clearly a cheap knock-off. Still, they started this ad war. I hope they're prepared for the fallout. Hopefully they'll NEVER get to officially carry the iPhone, even when they switch to LTE.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:00 pm Comment from: AppleJack

What?

The music is great! . . . It creates tension, and builds to an end with a climax : Can your music do that?

Nov 23, 09 - 06:00 pm Comment from: Gil

Now if we can just laud the benefits of OS X versus Windows (anything).

Nov 23, 09 - 06:00 pm Comment from: Quad Core

Notice that they never mention any other networks. Smart move, since the exclusivity may end.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:09 pm Comment from: Cascadians

Great ads! Direct highlight and hands-on example of capabilities, features, ease. More like this !!

And make these for the Mac too.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:12 pm Comment from: Planar

great ads but not sure that regular non-iphone users will necessarily make the connection and understand that the conversation is actually live and ongoing. they may just think it is just on hold or something since there is no conversation taking place while the data functions are demonstrated . just my 2 cents

@neo
att probably has great service wherever you are, it does everywhere that I go

Nov 23, 09 - 06:15 pm Comment from: Javier

I just tried that on my Edge and it says you can't connect to data services while calling. And you know what that means, it's lawsuit time! I already called my lawyer. It will be a merry Christmas indeed.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:16 pm Comment from: HMCIV

@Quad Core

Interesting. That implies they've also just made voice/data sharing a requirement for networks in the US and overseas. Dear Verizon... there's a map for that!

Nov 23, 09 - 06:18 pm Comment from: ~Johan

I have never, never, seen any Apple advertisement on TV here in Netherlands. Never. Not on the three national networks and not on any of the very many commercial channels.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:19 pm Comment from: neo

@ Pianar

AT&T;sucks on the west side of Los Angeles, It's completely unusable in NYC and San Francisco. When you are on the move in Los Angeles calls are dropped constantly. And if you are at an event forget about using your phone period.

I've had all three models of the iPhone and the network has been getting worst with the growth.

Apple is spot on with the iPhone. Make no mistake. I am here because of the iPhone. Great innovation. I pay a premium and yet AT&T;is substandard.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:19 pm Comment from: Islandgirl

See AT&T;, THIS is how you make an ad people will remember. Not some lame guy slapping "Xs" on a poster.

yeah, its true, internet and voice at the same time doesn't work on Edge, but you can do other built-in functions while on a call on edge

Nov 23, 09 - 06:23 pm Comment from: Moo

@ neo;

As someone who "switched" from Verizon (after 4 years on their so-called "network"), let me correct your post.

iPhone is the best phone all around no doubt but if you can't get on the network or even stay on the network than no, Verizon can't do that. Verizon needs to upgrade its network. What good is all of these great abilities if Verizon can't service them up?

(please excuse the poor grammar and atrocious spelling- Those belong solely to Neo- I had only the time to correct his factual inaccuracies)

Nov 23, 09 - 06:25 pm Comment from: Jerry T

I don't get it, I'm on Sprint, which is CDMA like VZW, and I can surf the web, text, check email, view apps and check weather etc. while on a call.

Voice cuts out a little/lot while the data is being accessed, once the site loads, voice goes back to normal. I don't have to hang up, look up the address, email or website then call the person back as some seem to suggest.

I think the simultaneous voice and data on AT&T;or GSM in general just means there is no voice degradation as data is accessed.

But it makes a good commercial because many of you think we have to hang up a call to look up an address or website.

@Javier

"... it's lawsuit time! I already called my lawyer. It will be a merry Christmas indeed."

Really? Merry?
Cuz you sound like Scrooge. Seriously dude.
Pull the stick out of your ass.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:26 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

@ Handsome Smitty:

Yes, the 3GS is that much faster than the 3G. The processor is twice as fast, plus other improvements.

Of course, things are sped up for the commercial.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:27 pm Comment from: neo

Moo...AT&T;is just a terrible terrible service. AT&T;can't handle the demand and AT&T;is failing with this success. That is the fact of the matter.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:28 pm Comment from: Bizlaw

I didn't realize how big a deal it was to be able to be on a call and get data at the same time until I needed to have such capabilities with my iPhone 2G. I use this feature constantly with my 3GS, particularly Maps, email and Safari. It drove me absolutely nuts to be talking to a client or to my wife but not be able to get directions at the same time.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:30 pm Comment from: Moo

Beejeebers!

Took a sec to view the ads, and wow!
Unlike Verizon's 5-year-old-in-the-sandbox sniping, Apple NAILED it.

Verizon CAN NOT DO what AT&T;does, and they can't because of the creaky antique US only network they've deployed.

Verizon?

You'd have been better off shutting up about rejecting the iPhone when Apple came a callin', because after talkin' all yer smack, you're about to become the proverbial Red Headed Stepchild.

Thing is, this time, I'm cheering for the beat-down.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:31 pm Comment from: boyweho

Apple's response is so much better than AT&T;'s! I do agree it isn't really obvious the calls are still going on during all this, but overall, so much better.

Nov 23, 09 - 06:31 pm Comment from: x

Up the ass, Verizon. LOL!

"I don't get it, I'm on Sprint, which is CDMA like VZW, and I can surf the web, text, check email, view apps and check weather etc. while on a call."

You don't get it, but in the first 3 words you declare you're NOT the target for this ad? This is attacking the Droid on VZ.

Still confused? Have some warm milk and go back to bed.

Apple Shows Vulnerability By Airing Counter-Attack To Verizon 'Map' Ad

Nov 23, 09 - 06:45 pm Comment from: John E

@ Pianar - you must have bad electromagnetic vibes. been using my iPhones all over SF all these years since the beginning. it works. "completely unusable" is nonsense, you're seriously exaggerating. the first year 2G was more problem than the 3G has ever been. only notable issue is when inside a big concrete building.

will AT&T;'s upgrades now in process really help? we'll see ...

Nov 23, 09 - 06:52 pm Comment from: ClaytonK

I'm not sure that the typical viewer will know that Verizon can't access data and voice at the same time...even after watching the ad.

Nov 23, 09 - 07:05 pm Comment from: Randian

@Quad Core

It's "hinterland," actually; and on Lake Powell, in southern Utah, one is DEFINITELY there. The supposed 3G service that Verizon's map brags about near Navajo Mountain is nothing short of crap (and, in truth, doesn't come close to matching EDGE speeds, even).

NOTE: The reason most of us are so dissatisfied with ATT's service is that we USE that service. We know it all-too-intimately. But take a gander some time at the Verizon boards and what people are saying there. Same complaints, same objections, same threats to leave and never come back.

The truth is that we all hate the carrier we presently have, for the grass is always greener OVER THERE. Me, I'm satisfied with ATT, warts and all . . . and, yes, I am a former Verizon customer here in Colorado (and on Lake Powell, Utah).

Nov 23, 09 - 07:25 pm Comment from: pdxflint

I want an iPhone! The various networks can wave all the "smart" phones in the world at me, offering all kinds of deals - to absolutely no effect. I just don't know if I should wait for the next gen version, or just plunge in now... either way, it'll be so long T-Mobile, although for the most part they've been a decent provider, with somewhat limited range, but good customer service and absolutely consistent billing, which is more that I can say about my Verizon friends' experiences each month.

None of it matters. I want an iPhone.

Nov 23, 09 - 07:25 pm Comment from: Jerry T

@mike,

I am still confused mike. Your answer wasn't helpful in the least. Unless you were trying to convey how big of a prick that you are.

Since the ad didn't mention Droid or VZW I'd like to know how you know who the target audience is, were you at the marketing meeting? If you weren't STFU.

It's just as easy to think the ad is aimed at anyone "NOT" using an iPhone or AT&T;.

Plenty of people on here think that only GSM lets you do what the commercial showed. On several other threads on this forum lots of people seemed to think that ALL CDMA users had to hang up, search then call back.

Nov 23, 09 - 07:41 pm Comment from: iQuack

I agree with you AppleJack. And funny Tag BTW. "Can your music do that?" LMAO

Nov 23, 09 - 08:11 pm Comment from: Alex Bold

...and if you want to know where you can actually do what ATT ad suggest, you can check Verizon ads and make sure you are not in white spot of ATT map.

Now, can't we all agree that 3G coverage is important? Thanks, Verizon. Work harder, not try to be smarter, ATT.
We love you both.

Nov 23, 09 - 08:18 pm Comment from: LordRobin

And yet Verizon's going to get an iPhone any day now! That's what all the analysts say, right?

Can we please remember this thread the next time an "Apple-Verizon deal" story comes up?

You know. It's one thing getting into a battle of the schlongs with Microsoft, because obviously as brazen as MicroCrapt is, it must have big balls, right?!? These recent Mac vs. PC commercials have been great. Mac is simply steppin' up to the screen and pulling it out in front of everybody. Girls are gooing.. PC is extremely embarrassed. This is definitely going to haunt him for the rest of his life. wink

But, these ads.. I don't know.. I kinda picture the conversation Steve had with Randy..

<steve> Don't get your panties all in a wad now, Randy. Those bitches over at VZ are just pissed off because they screwed up... I'll help you out, but you aren't going question me not once, ever again. You may run AT&T;as far as the world is concerned, but we both know who your daddy is, don't we?

<randy> Yes, Dad!

<steve> Good. Now go sell more iPhones.

Personally, I think Steve-o is getting into a schlong-match with a female. They may both get screwed here.. just saying.

Maybe Mike was referring to this particular headline MDN posted for this thread. It sort of points to which audience is being targeted: "Apple’s new Verizon-swatting iPhone ads (with video and schedule)."

Nov 23, 09 - 10:28 pm Comment from: Ting

So is that music available somewhere... ...like iTunes?

Nov 23, 09 - 11:30 pm Comment from: Jerry T

@silverhawk,

Despite what the headline says, the ad does not mention verizon or the droid. I understand that it is implied and these ads are to counter VZW "got a map for that" ads. I was just pointing out how much of a dick that mike was. His response was uncalled for.

But more to the point of my original post, lots of people on here have the view that CDMA can't do the things that AT&T;'s GSM network can. I've never had VZW so I don't know about them, but I am on Sprint and I don't have to hang up, search the web or email then call the person back. Sprint is CDMA like VZW, so is it the network, or is it VZW that won't let you do that? The ad only says the network, not which network. So that "can" be confusing to some people.

That is what I was posting before mike's ridiculous, juvenile reply.

Nov 23, 09 - 11:38 pm Comment from: wyatt

To Apple. Please get on any other network and stop defending ATT

An happy mac and ipot touch owner who likes verizon service.

Nov 23, 09 - 11:59 pm Comment from: G Spank

I don't like it. Makes Apple look like dicks.

Nov 24, 09 - 12:07 am Comment from: Amorstus

Wait, why the hell is there a bing "keyword" ad on the word Apple (the first one in the article)? How did they get in here????

Nov 24, 09 - 12:07 am Comment from: Anim8me2

Funny, here in South Florida I do get the occasional dropped call but it is rare. I get them less than when I had a simple Motorola flip phone on Verizon.

I am actually pretty happy with AT&T;and I love my iPhone.
