Anyone know what the problem was? Sounded like an inverter transformer screaming to me.

I'd say Apple has virtually completed a major transition in short order, and in exemplary fashion.

This explains Apple's new aggressive advertising, pricing and distribution agreements. Apple is taking the gloves off and going after share.

If you haven't bought in, don't complain that you missed the boat.

This observation is true of most products, not limited to Apple or Macs. Early adopters are the first mass testers, so they will find the weaknesses. Moving from prototypes to mass production can often introduce a problem that wasn't seen in the original development.

I just got off the phone w/ AppleCare and they said that this possibly is a firmware update and not a new motherboard. If this is true or false I don't know, and would like to know if they are going to replace all the "whine"-y MacBook Pro's with this new version.

I gave up Apple laptops after my first two losers. I am Apple desktop user - period.
It seemed like a total crapshoot with the laptop whether one got a good one.
My first one went through two logic boards, three keyboards, lots of ram replacment, two processors. Totally turned me off on them.

I've had to replace the display on my iBook .. and now only 2 years later it's got a white line down the right side of it .... Fabulous!

Desktops are a much much better longterm value, best price for performance and expandability options.

What we need is a very small Mac notebook/PDA combination, all Flash based, no hard drive, no cd drive, one cool processor or a very slow and cool dual core. No external monitor support.

Combined optical digital and analog outputs and a firewire 400 port for connecting to mother Mac at home using iSync/ T booting. USB port for flash drives.

This way it can satisfy the needs of most mobile folks and the heavy lifting can be done back at the hefty desktop machine with Quad processors.

So... if I take my MacBook Pro to the Apple Store complaining about the whine, can I expect them to fix it by replacing the logic board?

I dunno, I am not able to go this week and find out, but they did say they would have to hear it to be able to do anything.

Finally... I've been waiting for this news! Now as soon as I can go without my computer for a week (LOL, never) I can loose the high-pitched screeching sound. In the meantime, "QuietMBP" is saving my sanity, at the cost of 20 minutes of battery life.

It's not a "whining sound" at all, but a high-pitched screeching sound.

The only whining I've heard is coming from the fan boys who complain whenever folks speak up about valid defects in Apple hardware.

This reminds me of the "white spots" issue in PowerBook G4 screens a year or two ago. Tons of people, including me, watched in dismay as their display developed 4 big ugly white spots. Folks in these forums were like "I'll bet these complains were planted by Microsoft!" or "quit whining!". Apple acknowledged the problem and developed a fix after a few months, and I got my PowerBook fixed under warranty.

The discoloration of the MacBooks is yet another valid defect that Apple is addressing.

There is no need to attack people who get problematic Apple hardware; they are frustrated enough already. It would be cool if the Mac fans in here would be more supportive of their own kind.

Can someone point me to a way I can know when the version 2 (or Revision B) of the MacBooks and MacBook Pro are shipping (after they start shipping, not some estimate of when they will). I'm concerned about the heat (and other) issues and want to wait for the second batch hoping there will be less issues.

What about Macbook? Any logic board change?

Over the weekend my rev 1 MacBook Pro started turning itself off when running on the battery power. It keeps doing it ever since. Doesn't seem to matter what the battery life left is. Is this happening to anyone else? I called Apple, but they were more interested in trying to get me to buy Apple Care than in fixing the problem. I guess I'm heading to the store.

AppleCare support told me this morning that they haven't heard of a new MLB. This could be because it's brand spanking new, but the representative proposed another idea.

The rep said that the logic board that was replaced on an older MBP could be the same logic board in the newer MBP's (like mine). There was a new logic board for the MBP in Feb '06.

Since this guy had OSX 10.4.5, he had an older MBP and therefore might have gotten the logic board replaced for a separate issue.

My MacBook Pro has the whine and I bought it around May 23rd. My MacBook Pro also came with OSX 10.4.6

I got my replacement Macbook Pro produced last week (W26) a 2.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM with 128 MB VRAM. It has the new logic board and unfortunally the whine is definatly not gone.

This is a *known* issue, and Apple will replace your battery for free. It's related to the swelling/buckling battery issue that was reported not to long ago. If you can, I would discontinue use of the battery so no physical damage to your MBP begins to rear up.

I bought a macbookpro this past sunday from the apple store and although I didn't have much time to play around with it, I did notice the 'hum/whine' noise coming from the right speaker. I took it back today (Thursday) and the "genius" at first couldn't hear it and I suggested that he perhaps take it to some place quieter as there was alot of activity in the store. He went to the back room and he heard it and swapped it for a new one. I told him that I had read that serial numbers that had 25 or higher were to have no problems and he said that there was no truth to that. Anyway, he mentioned that If I had a problem with this one, that he wouldn't be able to replace it and that I would probably just have to do a refund. So if you recently bought your computer, maybe look into going to the apple store rather than dealing with the phone tech support. I'm off to try the new one. I hope it works. This is my first mac purchase...windows user since 1994.
