Analyst Wu: Apple’s next-gen iMacs held up for business reasons, minor technical issue
Monday, January 26, 2009 - 11:12 AM EST

"Apple's next-generation iMacs are being held up for business reasons and a minor technical obstacle, according to one Wall Street analyst," Zach Spear reports for AppleInsider.

"'We wanted to give an update on the Mac business from what we are picking up from our latest supply chain checks,' Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu wrote in a report to clients Monday," Spear reports. "'While new the iMac appears to be almost ready for primetime, what is holding it up appears to be business reasons and a potential small technical hurdle.'

Spear reports, "Specifically, Wu said his sources indicate that external casing changes will likely be modest and that 'Apple is in the midst of figuring out whether to power the new iMac with Intel quad-core processors or more high-powered dual-core processors with larger caches.'"

"Wu said he was surprised Macworld didn't bring new iMacs and believes Apple may be hesitating on quad-core processors for the iMac on fears that the decision could cut into Mac Pro sales," Spear reports "In addition, Wu said he's also picked up on chatter that the iMac's vents and cooling systems may see a redesign to deal with higher heat dissipation... Wu [also] suggested that one final variable delaying the release of new iMacs could be the timing of Snow Leopard."

I think it is due to Snow Leopard. Apple won't want to introduce a new set of iMacs and a few months later tell those same buyers they need to pay $XX.XX to upgrade their new computers.

Jan 26, 09 - 11:34 am Comment from: Viktor

I believe that iMac and Mac Pro are very different markets. I am hoping to get a Quad Core iMac or Dual Core Xeon iMac. But even that there is a Mac Pro that you can have with 4 cores (two dual cores xeons) and get it more cheaper, I prefer the style of the iMac.

Bring my new iMac once for all...!!!!!

Actually, that is exactly what Apple have done with every version of OSX to date.. New hardware introduced followed by an OSX update several months later.

I think he is write about the iMacs cutting into Mac Pro business. I told my wife recently that if they come out with a quad-core iMac, I may go that way instead of a Mac Pro

Jan 26, 09 - 11:43 am Comment from: Zune Tang®

It is held up in order to allow it to connect to the brown Zunes - you know the good looking ones. Just click and play, the way it should be.

Jan 26, 09 - 11:44 am Comment from: jocknerd

The only thing that cuts into sales of the Mac Pro are stagnation in the line and price. Offer me a new one that is not a year old and sell it at a starting price of $1999 and I'll give you my credit card today Apple.

Jan 26, 09 - 11:50 am Comment from: Radius

I have been holding out for a new iMac. The Mac Pros are just a little bit too much moolah for me right now. I do some photography and music and 3D work using Aperture, Logic Express and Maya, and I figure a 24 inch iMac would do well for me.

Jan 26, 09 - 11:57 am Comment from: eMax

THIS JUST IN: "New models of computers are not yet released due to not being released yet"

Apple never said they were releasing new iMacs, so anything that happens prior to the release of a new machine is simply PART OF THE PROCESS.

Jan 26, 09 - 12:17 pm Comment from: John Gee

I think they are tinkering with the chips to make sure they can do Windows too. Windows is really tough to do. Them lasers, y'know.

Jan 26, 09 - 12:19 pm Comment from: @Marco

My year-old iMac has been gorgeous and problem-free since I got it. That was a pretty broad attack you just made.

Analysts = Idiots.

"New Macs didn't release because Apple is just not ready!"

...Morons.

Jan 26, 09 - 12:32 pm Comment from: Mr. Matte

They figured out that they need to offer a matte screen model, and they're waiting for a supply of matte glass.

Jan 26, 09 - 12:41 pm Comment from: peter

Desktop sales were lower then expected, because the "best modells ever" are not very attraktiv at the moment so it simply takes longer to clear inventory.

If Apple is hesitating because of MacPro sales, this would be ridiculous, because it is a very bad idea to make each modell weaker then it could be only because not to cut sales of the high end maschines. They should compare their desktop hardware with actual Windows maschines and then you will know why they lose market share with their desktop mashines. It´s not because of the resession, the desktop maschines - especially the macMini is a bad deal at the moment - combo Drive / 80 GB and 1 GB Ram.
For the same money you get a fully equipped windows multimedia maschine with a bluray drive an TV tuner card, better CPU und GPU, 640 GB disk Space, 3 GB of RAM, bluetooth keyboard and additional remote control. The only bad deal is the casing and the operating system.
Apple should change to desktop CPU, they are much cheaper and they should think about actual hard Disk and RAM prices because the MacMini configuration is just a shame.
Apple have to wake up, a 600 dollar desktop computer should be equipped at least with a 2.5 Ghz Intel E5200, a Nvidia 9400 GPU, Superdrive, 250 GB hard disk and 2 GB of RAM.
And Apple need a iMac modell below 1000 $ and QuadCore Konfiguration for the high End modells. Only better and competive modells will bring more market share - despite MacOS is a very good argument it is not enough to accept outdated hardware.

Google early release of any product, especially PC's, plus Service and Reliability surveys. PC's aren't expected to be perfect, so they don't generate nearly as much press over glitches. Apple always scores at the top of the list. Could be better, could be Perfect- thank God we're not dealing with Dells or HP's!

Jan 26, 09 - 01:08 pm Comment from: hawkeye

Wow!
Is Apple introducing a new line of "mashines" called "flatMacs"?
wink

@Jake
I took care of Marco. He is in love with my brown Zune and it matches his brown eyes - all 3.

@peter
disagree and don't have time for details, but not technically accurate, after you get a Mac get back to us - in meantime, enjoy your Zune

Jan 26, 09 - 01:19 pm Comment from: @ peter

jeez thanks for telling us something we don't know. and you basically obsoleted your whole rant when you said " The only bad deal is the casing and the operating system." uh thats why we buy apple jackass. Just because apple doesn't have a brand new computer every two months with the latest ploy, doesn't mean they are blind to the market. They always put out products that pleasing to the eye and WORKS!!! my brother bought one of those computers you talk about and guess what it jams up all the time and ended up paying more money to protect the damn thing with more software and warranties. and took him way too much time uninstalling crapware. The thing about their hardware is it works as it supposed to and OSX takes advantage of what each piece can perform rather than just having the specs to show and not work. hold your panties up and just wait like everyone else if not go and waste your money on a PC that you'll hate and will not perform the same a year later.

Jan 26, 09 - 01:29 pm Comment from: DJ

Forward-march has been on the iMac and laptop lines recently, and Mac Pro is definitely running behind.

Right now the iM is powerful enough for all but extreme power users, so any new Pro model has to offer something extreme to take marketshare.

And a decent price/performance ratio too.

@ Marco Macro

Be careful or you may end up with a Zune - the brown one to match your 3 brown eyes.

iMac is held up because Snow Leopard is being released with it. Apple seeks to increase its desktop share. They released the 17" ahead of time because it has its own users no matter what OS it has. So, that settles it.

Oh and Marco Macro, that name is just stupid. Have you ever had zunetang? Probably not. When you get older come back and give us some of your insight.

Jan 26, 09 - 01:52 pm Comment from: cb

I agree with some assessments that the quad core would eat into the Mac Pro line...

But I don't think it would eat much. I'm a small Graphic Design shop and have debated this for quite sometime. Trade in my 1st Generation G5 (now almost 5 years old) for a new iMac.

I run CS3 but that is about the most intense computing required other than the occasional 3d modeling job.

I think anyone bigger than myself would stay with Mac Pro.

Attn:

The iMac was delayed because of a business decision. No, wait! It was because Apple can't decide what processor to use. No, wait! They can't figure out how to cool the things properly.

Jan 26, 09 - 02:19 pm Comment from: ken1w

For "business reasons"? What other type of "reasons" would a "business" have for making decisions?

Jan 26, 09 - 02:27 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

JUST CONFIRMED: iMac is held up because Snow Leopard is being released with it. Apple seeks to increase its desktop share. They released the 17" ahead of time because it has its own users no matter what OS it has. So, that settles it.

Jan 26, 09 - 02:29 pm Comment from: Mr. Reeee

Why does the fact the Marco notes real problems with iMac displays make him a troll? The concern is legitimate.

The iMac is NOT a pro-level machine. Period.

Apple STILL needs to make a mid-range MacPro, that has half the slots and is less than half the size of the MacPro, so that pro users who do NOT need the expandability of the MacPro can get an upgradable machine (video card, more RAM slots) and can get a PRO monitor with a matte screen.

Sorry kiddies, regardless of the hype, glossy displays are not appropriate for pro graphics or color work. Unless you prefer to sit in a dark room. Ever try to do 3D modeling on a glossy display? Buy a big bottle of Advil and then give it a try!

"Apple may be hesitating on quad-core processors for the iMac on fears that the decision could cut into Mac Pro sales."

Well, if that's the case (and I doubt it is), there's one really obvious solution.

Update the Mac Pro!

Heck, throw two six-core Xeon 7400s (they've been out for four months now) and I don't think you'll need to worry about the iMac taking sales from the Mac Pro.

(Of course, I'm not sure you can put two of them into an Xserve...)

Jan 26, 09 - 02:40 pm Comment from: Zune Tang®

Not cool to impersonate me by the way! Get your own personality please.

Do you know that I am pro-Apple? That "zune tang" rhymes with the same word starting with a "P" instead of a "Z" - get it? Thats what she said.

Jan 26, 09 - 04:12 pm Comment from: fdndfng

The real reason, internal disputes at Apple regarding product design and release schedules. With Steve Jobs' future at Apple ambiguous at best, the divisions are beginning to develop.

Jan 26, 09 - 05:19 pm Comment from: Gabriel

@ fdndfng

XD

Seriously, you believe that?

No company as large as Apple can possibly be solely dependent upon a single person to keep everybody working together. That's corporate culture, and it comes from within, not above.

MW: reason, as in I think you're missing some. wink

Jan 26, 09 - 05:54 pm Comment from: gjsjxdj

Gabriel:

According to your "reasoning" Jobs decision making at Apple maybe over ridden by a simple majority, his input is no more greater than anyone else in the executive board room, and his vision no more influential than his own opinion. So, what exactly does Steve Jobs do at Apple that perpetuates the myth?

Also, you imply that Apple is essentially leaderless and operates from some spontaneous yet unifying consensus of opinion. That seems to describe a recipe for chaos not order.

Jan 26, 09 - 05:54 pm Comment from: One guy from Finland

Snow Leopard is the major thing.

Jan 26, 09 - 06:41 pm Comment from: peter

"Update the Mac Pro!

The MacPro is not ready for a update now because Apple is waiting for the new Nehalem Xeon Chips for a dual socket configuration. The new Pro will support multithreading up to 16 logic cores so it will really make sense to wait for the release of Snow Leopard to take full advantage of the crunching power.
The Xeon 7400 is a very expensive multi socket processor for large servers and is very unlikly that you will see this CPU ever in an Apple maschine.

@ fake zune tang:

Just saying... the real zune tang actually registered his username... and when he's on he gets the little grey dot...

Nice try, though.

Jan 27, 09 - 12:38 am Comment from: Fred

people who want to want to expand their machines or like to customize them , they will go with the mac Pro. But it if they an all in 1 machine that just goes from the moment you plug it in, they will choose the imac.
