Apple’s next-gen iPod nano may be housed in aluminum

“The next generation of Apple Computer’s iPod nano digital music player may dip into the iPod mini’s wardrobe,” Prince McLean reports for AppleInsider.

“In an effort to reduce the player’s susceptibility to scratches, Apple has been experimenting with aluminum anodized enclosures similar to those used in the company’s iPod mini digital music players, sources familiar with the company’s music plans have said,” McLean reports.

“According to sources, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company is so far believed to have committed to the transition away from the nano’s polycarbonate-coated shell and towards aluminum enclosures. The new enclosures are expected to debut in color variations similar to those used with the iPod mini, these sources added,” McLean reports.

If Apple makes this move (we hope they do) whatever will the FUD disseminators do? We can see the “Apple iPod nanos cause worldwide beer can shortage” stories already.

  1. the colour options on the mini made it by far the most popular model. Apple would be dunces not to go back down that road.

A coloured 6-8 GB nano (w. colour screen of course) for the same price as the version 2 mini seems like a great move. Remember that one complaint when they discontinued the mini was that the nano was a step back in terms of battery life and capacity.

Now, will this be the only iPod out before Xmas or will we finally see the real video iPod?

  2. Canned Beer? YUCK
Good beer doesn’t come in cans.

The iPod mini is nice. The metal shell feels good and more substantial than those polymer cases. A metal cased nano would be very nice indeed! Bring back a few more colors, too! Green, Purple, Red, Blue.

Scratches or not, it makes sense to spend $20 and get one of those thin rubber iPod skins. Then you can toss an iPod anywhere and not worry about messing it up.

  3. I hope they do this. My ipod mini is still kicking, no scratches and works great even after it has been dropped a bunch of times. I feel its the strongest ipod there is, plus it looks awsome next to my powerbook.

  4. The Guinness I drink is from a keg, but I suppose a bottle or their special cans are better than nothing if I can’t be hunkered down in my favorite pub, the Horse Brass in Portland, OR.

On the new nano: Yes. Please make it in metal. That would be arse kickin’!! Well, that and at least 8 gig, prefereably up to 12 gig.

  5. The scratch problem with the current Nano is VERY REAL.

I am still amazed by those who continue to live in denial over that very obvious flaw in the design.

A move to a Mini-Like enclosure is a very smart move on Apple’s part.

Only reason I didn’t buy a Nano over a Mini last year was because the 2 day old Nano demos at the Apple store looked like they had been skipped across a parking lot face down before being put on display.

  6. >Other sources are reporting that it will be anodized magnesium, not aluminum.

If my boss only knew what I did at work…..>

My motto was–always be worth more than you are making in salary.

  7. “Apple’s next-gen iPod nano may be housed in aluminum”

Make it aluminum foil and you could keep a small snack fresh too. Or a little hat to block out alien broadcasts (and some shortcasts).

  8. “My sources tell me the next-gen nano will have no case at all.”

Plasma? A reflection of a case transmitted by satellite? Gluons? They’ve hired David Blaine to make you think there is a case?

  9. “They’ve hired David Blaine to make you think there is a case?”

David Blaine is under NDA right now and cannot discuss the “case”.

In other news, Shaw Wu has predicted there will be a massive shortage of cases for the new iPods due to the fact that Apple will not be using cases at all. Stock will plummet.
