“Apple issued a press release [yesterday] morning, announcing that App Store downloads have now topped the 3 billion mark,” Rick Aristotle Munarriz writes for The Motley Fool.
“It’s certainly an impressive feat, given that Apple launched the applications marketplace only two summers ago,” Munarriz writes. “It took just six months to double up on the 1.5 billion downloads that the company chalked up during the App Store’s rookie year.”
“The timing of the press release is certainly no accident,” Munarriz writes. “This was supposed to be Google’s day. The world’s leading search engine has been prepping for [yesterday’s] Nexus One unveiling — but in steps Apple to hog some of the attention.”
Munarriz writes, “Apple has a funny — or tactically brilliant — way of crashing the party… There is no way that the timing of Apple’s press release is a coincidence. Jobs has plenty of practice in pulling the rug from under his competitors — and he just did it again.”

By default, iPhone’s Safari Web browser searches using Google. You can have Safari search using Yahoo, instead. From your iPhone’s Home screen choose Settings > Safari > Search Engine, then switch from Google to Yahoo. In addition, there are many Web Search apps available for iPhone and iPod touch. See them all via Apple’s iTunes App Store here.
Mac Safari users can easily install a plug-in such as the free Glims, to add multiple search engine choices to Safari.

Eric Schmidt is a snake. Everyone wants to come two years late to the party and ride the success that Apple has EARNED.
The same thing happened with the iPod and iTunes. Apple revolutionized the music industry by delivering a distribution model that worked. Apple called for the end of DRM while everyone tried to make it seem like Apple was responsible for it in the first place.
Seems like all the anti-Apple crowd has fallen head-over-heels for Google lately. What’s so great about Chrome, Google Docs, GMail and Android anyway? I’ve tried but they all seem second-rate to the integration that Apple offers with MobileMe.

Chrome vs Safari
Both use Webkit and Safari is slightly faster. Safari syncs bookmarks between my Macs and looks like a proper Mac app.
Gmail vs MobileMe
Sure Gmail is free and I have an account. But I rarely use it since MobileMe works great at keeping my mailboxes synced between my home Mac, work Mac and iPhone. BTW, it only costs $70 if you buy the boxed version from Amazon and enter the code for renewals (or about $6/mo).
Google Docs vs iWork vs MS Office
I use iWork at home. We use Office at work. But since I do almost all my work in Adobe Creative Suite, I rarely use a spreadsheet or Word document anyway. IMO, Apple needs to really beef up it’s Mail app to be an enterprise alternative to Entourage/Outlook.

I’ll give Google this one although Google might want to consider updating the look of their website and results pages after all these years. Doesn’t hurt that Google is the default search in Safari. Although to be fair, maybe every browser should allow you to specify which search box you wish to use in prefs.

This site really is turning into a ‘hate everything that’s not Apple’ site. I understand the attack on Microsoft, but not attacking Google is a bit much. They are entitled to fight Microsoft, Palm & Blackberry for 2nd place – why not? They are a great innovative company with the best search engine – why change it on your browser? Its good and healthy to have some competition although Apple always seems to transcend whatever area they delve into. It keeps Apple honest. Google docs, email and wave is great too. There’s plenty of room for both companies. I’d rather have the 2 companies going up and Microsoft going down – this would be just better for consumers.

I agree with the other posters. Why attack Google just because they released a phone? I can understand the Microsoft or even Nokia attacks but the Google attacks seem unwarranted. If anything, I welcome Google to the phone party as it shifts Microsoft’s power in this area to be even less than what it is. It’s not like any of Google management has come out like CEOs of other companies such as Microsoft and Creative to publicly bash Apple. As much as I love Apple, would we really want to them to own every market without any competition? Let’s really put this in prospective people.

I’ve met the Google Bear, and I can pretty well tell you that the lack of social graces and style by this group is because they are GEEKS. They, very much like Apple, just want to make the the world a better place. They want to use their talents and creativity and education and labors in that pursuit.
I consider MDN a friend, but perhaps my friend should get a cup of coffee and go sit in a quiet corner, and consider its attitude towards Google. We all like a rapier wit, but we must be careful the blade does not draw blood from another friend.
After reading about how Google profits on building an ongoing database of the searches we do out of our family iMac (logging the IP Address) by selling IP-specific ads/space for our particular set of interests,

hearing about how Trojan-Schmidt appears to have a non-coincidentally parallel strategy w/ Apple,
We switched to Ixquick — w/ Glims help on Safari, and w/ the direct download on Firefox. Ixquick is big in Europe, but I’ll wager it’ll become huge over the next year, especially for Mac-users.
I’ve been using it about a month now, and the quality of results are excellent w/ a few exceptions (map searches and pic searches).
Anyways, as always, just fwiw…

It’s tough choosing sides. But I prefer Apple technology and so I choose Apple innovation over copycats.
As for choosing another default search engine. What’s wrong with competition? What’s good for Apple surely must be good for Google, no?
Ignore the tone. Just let freedom of choice for search engines exist. I’d like to see Apple provide it in Safari without the need to install a plugin.
I for one don’t have a problem with Google trying to compete in the smartphone business. (Key word there is “trying”.) It doesn’t change the fact that they have the best search engine by far, and it’ll be a cold day in hell before I start using Yahoo or MS just to spite Google.

HEY – what kind of pencils do they use at Google?? The video says the phone is 11.5 mm thick, or about the width of a number 2 pencil. My iPhone is about 11 mm thick, but my pencil is only about 6 mm!
According to wikipedia, when I GOOGLED it:

I mentioned yesterday that I thought we wanted Android to replace MS Mobile, Symbian and maybe someday, Windows. It is potentially better, and its free. It is especially free of Microsoft.
I think MS is in a world of trouble with the two-pronged attack on its power, from Apple and Google.
Competition from Google is a good thing because it will only make Apple look better. Let’s face it, Google, although having way better ideas than Microsoft is similar in the fact that they simply have no taste in designing software and online services. The Google/Apple relationship was going so well and Google decides to stab Apple in the back to try and get rich quick. Did this not happen with Bill Gates back in 1984 as well? The difference this time is that Apple has it’s iPhone selling well all over the world for the last few years, 3 billion apps downloaded from the app store and a war chest of over $25 billion in the bank. Do you really think Apple is going to stop innovating at this point?
The “iSlate” is weeks away from announcement and the 4th generation iPhone will be out in a few months. When that happens, the competition is going to look like a 20 year old Japanese car. And I’m not talking a mint Acura Integra GS-R, more like an old Corolla that needs it’s timing belt replaced.

When you hammer Microsoft because it is unimaginative and steals ideas and more, I’m with you. Google is a worthy competitor and has come up with plenty of ideas on their own. The mapping on the iPhone is not an Apple invention. MDN is sounding like a tea-party Republican when it denounces any alternative ways of doing things. In doing so, it is self-demeaning. Look I’m as a big an Apple enthusiast anyone, but all this vitriol for Google and other companies needs to end. Despising these companies and their products doesn’t make any of the Apple products I own any better, so I don’t see the point. Just enjoy your decision in knowing that by buying Apple, you help the company continue to innovate and release ground-breaking, market-defining new products.
Google is not anti-Apple. I find it hard to believe Google set out to try and kill the iPhone. Google has proven time and time again that Microsoft is the target. Google wanted to give handset makers an alternative to Windows Mobile, which has lagged so far behind now, it’s a little ridiculous and embarrassing.
As Google has stated, this is not a Goggle phone. It’s an HTC phone being marketed and sold through Google’s web-store. They will add other phones from other manufacturers for other carriers as they are made available. Google, just wanted a phone out there they could show off all Android’s features and keep up-to-date on a regular basis, as all the carriers have so far failed to do. This is Google’s attempt to take control of the Android platform and have devices with a direct to consumer path, which has been lacking so far and the reason the iPhone has been so successful.
The Nexus has less app memory (190MB according to NY TImes David Pogue) versus the 256MB app memory for the DROID, and currently the minimum app memory of the iPhone is 8GB for the 3G and 16GB for the 3GS, which is priced similarly to the Nexus.
It’s all about the app memory.

As many have pointed out, it’s too bad MDN has a hard time with Google getting into the phone business. There was talk of them doing something like this long before the iPhone ever was even announced. It’s no surprise, and like others, I think they will do the best they can to provide a great alternative.
From the looks of it, I’m certainly not a fan of the UI, but it is innovative, it’s not for me, but some will surely like it, and that is nothing but a good thing.
Again, as others have mentioned, the people that work at Google are geeks, that really do try, at least in their own minds, to make the world a better place. I think that’s great.
For those that don’t like their simplistic web interfaces, I might suggest you just don’t get it perhaps. The simple white, or whatever color you choose, background on the Google homepage is the ‘point’ and doesn’t need updating. And the gmail interface is fine as well.
I don’t think Apples announcement has done anything to minimize this announcement really. ANd this announcement of the Nexus One, while painful to watch I agree, illustrates that the Google guys are going to continue and try and innovate, like they have with search, email, web and many other ventures.
This is good for Apple, and will be good for all of us that love Apple.

I think it is funny how many people are defending Google. The reason MDN is dissing them is because Eric was on the Board of Apple and it appears the they have copied (Stolen), Apples short term road map. Eric has done a Bill Gates. If this is true, Steve intends to eat Googles launch. If it is not it may be a smoke screen attack against Microsoft. Make it look like they are fighting each other when the real intent is to take down Microsofty from two sides and squeeze Softy in the middle. Splat. Not sure yet.
If Google has screwed up we will know in a few years because Steve does not forgive quickly. He will sneak up on Google and compete with them in their own markets more elegantly. I look forwarded to watching this play out.
I also don’t see Google as the enemy. If they push Apple a bit, it is better for us all, and I don’t think the Mac-iPhone-iPod ecosystem has much to fear. I have participated in two Windows to Mac conversions this holiday season and have a third one waiting in the wings.

I’m a longtime Macbook user and have taken a person vow to never own another Microsoft operating system (I really despise those guys). But I don’t drink the kool-aid for all things Mac either. I want Apple to remain strong as company that offers great products. That requires me, the consumer, to keep it honest and objective and hold my favorite’s feet to the fire to keep things moving forward and not getting lazy or stale. No?
So my feedback would be–Less spin, more objectivity, share the pluses and minuses for both in an even presentation of information and let the reader decide…

That presentation was, well, uncomfortable to watch. I hope they put more work in the details of their product than they did into the presentation, although I doubt it.
