As Macs gain share, Apple CEO Steve Jobs sees new Mac OS X version every 12 to 18 months
Monday, October 22, 2007 - 08:50 AM EST

"Two research firms that track the computer market said last week that Apple would move into third place in the United States behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell on Monday, when it reports product shipments in the fiscal fourth quarter as part of its earnings announcement," John Markoff reports for The New York Times. "'The Macintosh has a lot of momentum now,' said Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, in a telephone interview last week. 'It is outpacing the industry.'"

Markoff reports, "Mr. Jobs said that Leopard would anchor a schedule of product upgrades that could continue for as long as a decade. 'I’m quite pleased with the pace of new operating systems every 12 to 18 months for the foreseeable future,' he said. 'We’ve put out major releases on the average of one a year, and it’s given us the ability to polish and polish and improve and improve.'"

Markoff reports, "That pace suggests that Apple will continue to move more quickly than Microsoft, which took almost seven years between the release of its Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems."

MacDailyNews Take: "But, but, but" sputter the Thurrotts and Enderles of the world, "Vista was sooo worth the wait!"

Markoff continues, "Microsoft has also hinted that its next operating system, code-named Windows 7, would not arrive until 2010. At Apple’s current pace, it will have introduced two new versions of its operating system by then."

"Vista, it has clearly not pushed up demand for new PCs as much as computer makers hoped. Last week, the research firm Gartner said PC shipments in the United States grew only 4.7 percent in the third quarter, below its projection of 6.7 percent," Markoff reports. "That contrasted sharply with Apple’s projected results for the quarter. Gartner forecast that Apple would grow more than 37 percent based on expected shipments of 1.3 million computers, for an 8.1 percent share of the domestic market. According to Charles Wolf, who tracks the personal computer market in his industry newsletter Wolf Bytes, Apple’s share of home PC revenue in the United States has jumped in the last four quarters. In the second quarter, for example, the Macintosh captured a 15.8 percent share,"

More in the full article, including Jobs' lament that with multi-touch, "people don’t understand that we’ve invented a new class of interface," here.

"code-named Windows 7"

code named? Isn't a code supposed to EXCLUDE the actual name of the product?

Typical MS

Whoop de freakin' do! Apple is going to patch their 30 year old Unix distribution every year and a half. So what. Maybe they'll sneak a 'games' patch in there—perhaps in 2011—if they're still in business.

I'll remind you MAC lemmings that another version of Windows may not appear until 2010 because the geniuses in Redmond don't have to. The technology in Vista is so groundbreaking it will still be ahead of 'MAC OS X 10.8 Pussy' if and when that debacle shows up. Keep trying, Apple. Maybe your OS will have the functionality of Windows 3.1 in a couple of years.

Your potential. Our passion.™

I found this on line from Gates.

"Mr. Gates said Microsoft's music strategy focuses on selling songs without copy-restriction software -- roughly a third of its overall library will not have the software, known as digital rights management, that limits music copying or sharing."
------- Is it just me, or didn't he say earlier that M$ was for DRM. That DRM is good for us. It protects us. ???????

"But he also suggested that music labels should push harder to sell all-you-can-eat subscriptions that let users download much more music that they keep as long as they continue paying. While Apple has frowned on subscriptions, Microsoft has backed a $15-a-month plan that Mr. Gates said would get a big push as part of Zune's new line. "
------- See Gates still has no taste. "And I mean that in a big way." Subscription is the way to milk the customer and that is what Microsoft is really about. grin

"Apple’s share of home PC revenue in the United States has jumped in the last four quarters. In the second quarter, for example, the Macintosh captured a 15.8 percent share, almost double its share of the number of units sold."

This is the number I have been looking for, what is our market share of those you have a choice what they use!

" expected shipments of 1.3 million computers"

I thought they were expecting around 2.0 million last qtr?

Oct 22, 07 - 09:14 am Comment from: hotinplaya

MS tried to copy OS X with Vista , and failed!

So they are going to try to copy a Mac OS perfectly and grow from there.

"code-named Windows 7" = MS copy of Mac OS 7

Wish to see OS 11

Oct 22, 07 - 10:02 am Comment from: Spock

I'm hoping by the end of the decade Apple would have released OS XI. I wouldn't mind them skipping 10.6-10.9. They almost did that with Panther.

Oct 22, 07 - 10:20 am Comment from: Mungo

This increase in the number of major (and minor) OS releases makes good sense since all of Apple's product lines rely on MAC OS X and since only Apple hardware is authorized ti run OS X, Apple can more easily continue to add new hardware and software features in sync with each other, enticing both current Apple consumers to upgrade and new consumers to switch.

Oct 22, 07 - 12:18 pm Comment from: Big Al

They started out with Windows 1 then 2 and they even had a Windows 286. That must have been something.

Then they brought out Windows 95. Windows 286 must have been a lot better than 95, it just stands to reason.

At least we know Windows 98 must have been better than Windows 95.

Then they hit us with Windows 2000 we knew we had the best system ever. 2000 is way bigger that 98, any fool knows that. Just like the Megahertz wars.

Now they are dropping to Windows 7. It is even smaller than 95 and we all know what a dog Windows 95 was.

In fact, 7 is even smaller than Apple's Mac OS 10.

At least they are not raising expectations like they did with the Vista train wreck. You have to give Microsoft Kudos for that.

$129 a year or just Ten X dot updates? If $129, how about free .Mac for the faithful or free X-Ray glasses or a joy buzzer (he said joy buzzer) or a new bike.

Oct 22, 07 - 05:17 pm Comment from: gow

12 to 18 months per new "major" upgrade? I think not. Why would Apple want to split the base among multiple OSs? Steve is brilliant, but that was a foolish remark by his standards. But having said that I am anxious for Leopard.
