Associated Press launches Mobile News Network geared to iPhone, iPod touch
Monday, May 05, 2008 - 12:26 PM EST

The Associated Press today debuted its Mobile News Network, a multimedia news portal targeted at wireless users who want access anytime and anywhere to international, national and local news content from the cooperative and its members. The web application has been optimized for use on iPhone and iPod touch and can be accessed directly at apnews.com or via iPhone web application pages at www.iphone.com/webapps.

"We are excited to offer the first comprehensive mobile news web app and to have been selected by Apple as a Staff Pick. With a new generation of mobile devices on the market, like the iPhone, the time is right for AP to introduce a product that brings together our members' local news brands with AP's unrivaled coverage of international and national events," said Jane Seagrave, AP's senior vice president of global product development, in the press release.

With more than 100 news publishers in the network at launch, covering 16 of the top 20 DMAs, the network provides the widest coverage available of breaking news, sports, entertainment, and business developments for consumers on the go.

"The mobile initiative with AP has the potential to create a single access point for news on smart phone platforms," said Lincoln Millstein, senior vice president and director of digital media for Hearst Newspapers, in th e press release. "That's a big benefit for users, and a great opportunity for providers of local news and advertising." Millstein was a member of an advisory group of new media executives from AP members who assisted in the planning for the cooperative project.

The new service, optimized for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch, offers a full multimedia experience, from photo galleries of sports events to spot video coverage of the presidential campaign. The Mobile News Network provides a single access point for both news and advertising, both national and local. Users can select news from their hometown, business destination or favorite cities, share stories, photos and video with friends and rate the information they receive.

Future versions of the Mobile News Network will include additional content from more newspapers and broadcasters and will be optimized for additional next generation mobile phones.

The Mobile News Network is the first product released by AP's Digital Cooperative, an initiative aimed at finding new digital outlets for the news and information produced by AP members.

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering fast, unbiased news from every corner of the world to all media platforms and formats. Founded in 1846, AP today is the largest and most trusted source of independent news and information. On any given day, more than half the world's population sees news from AP.

The Mobile News Network is a multimedia news portal providing anytime access to international, national and local news content from an unrivalled network of trusted sources. Powered by The Associated Press, wireless users now have breaking news, sports, entertainment, politics, business and wacky content in the palm of their hand. Additional information on the Mobile News Network can be found at www.ap.org/mobilenews, including our growing list of over 100 participating publishers.

Nice, but LOUSY video quality! Have you heard the horrible sound on those videos?
Hmm...this is an iPhone not a video capable Nokia.

Just tried it on my iPod touch. Works well, however local news is all New York. Don't need mid-day lottery results.

Nice but for USA only. :(

@MikeH

Hit the local news icon and type in your zip code, the news will be appropriate to your area.

And one by one, they fall in like to support the greatest mobile internet machine of all time (up until the current time of course and always depending on what new insanely great product Apple develops in the near future.)

Bob, I would have to agree with you. Video quality is pretty lousy. The sound is virtually indecipherable.

Hey AP, pick up the pace with your video quality, other wise people will not use it.

I will say that the over-all site design is encouraging in regards to the future of iPhone compatable apps.

All the more encouragement for apple to never allow flash and for other sites to start getting up to date with standards.

Wacky?

well i like it, i will like it even more if i could save the content to play back while i commute on the subway. When is someone going to let me DL a daily paper onto my iphone so i can stop killing trees just to get the news? New York Times, are you listening? Washington Post maybe? LA Times? Someone, lets save some trees people. Everytime I buy the paper i can here another tree fall:(

iphone.foxnews.com is still my favourite as far as video goes. When I'm on a wi-fi signal, the video looks really crisp and clean. Still, I am happy whenever sites make iPhone/Touch optimised pages, so I'll use the AP one too. Let's hope they improve the video.

Don't forget to make a Home Screen icon. Both Foxnews and AP have nice ones. BTW, does anyone know why AP uses a bowler hat for its icon?

drmacnut: " . . . anyone know why AP uses a bowler hat for its icon?"

I believe it's a fedora (or trilby Brit.). Think Clark Kent, mild mannered reporter. It's a symbol for an old, 40s-50s stereotype for a reporter. Red Hat, the newsreader Forté Agent, etc. also use the fedora as an icon.

Thanks Ampar! You're always full of good knowledge and good humour!
