AT&T: $55 per month tethering rumors are untrue
Friday, June 19, 2009 - 03:39 PM EST

iPod touch and Accessories!"There are a lot of reports out there, but wanted you guys to know that rumors of $55 tethering plan on top of an unlimited data plan are false," AT&T flatly states on their AT&T iPhone 3G S Facebook page.

"We’ll have more news to share when the iPhone tethering option is closer to launch," so sayeth AT&T.

I want to know when the upgraded iPod Touch is coming out. Will it have a camera? Will it have Bluetooth? Will it slice and dice?

If AT$T charges more for tethering than they do for their BlackBerry customers then we can complain.

If they charge less, then BlackBerry customers can complain.

It it's the same, then NO ONE should be surprised.

Macdoc you'll know in September. thank you for coming. and it won't be $55, it'll $60. hahahahahahaha. I bet it'll be $10-15 more a month just a couple dollars shy of a of regular data card, because your already paying for voice calls.

Jun 19, 09 - 03:09 pm Comment from: jaundiced

Yeah, the rumors untrue. Either the rate is more, or the rates for Black Berrys come down. To semi-paraphrase what someone else pointed out this morning, isn't tethering about like a single person having two cars? You can only drive them one at a time. So whatever price it turns out to be will still be obscene.

Maybe $90/month for mobile internet ($30+$60), plus some form of non-dialup at home? I'd be paying something like $135-$140/month for internet. If it's a business expense, why not? Personal use? Fagettaboutit!

Fred Mertz are you admitting to us that you're "friends" with AT&T;? hmmm

Jun 19, 09 - 03:26 pm Comment from: Gabriel

The most likely guess is that the rumored $55 includes the $30 already being paid for unlimited data - I'd therefore agree with the earlier speculation that tethering would cost an additional $25.

Jun 19, 09 - 03:34 pm Comment from: jaundiced

@Gabriel:

At that additional cost I would be at least very tempted.

Jun 19, 09 - 03:40 pm Comment from: .99

Yeah actually it was 54.99 right?

Jun 19, 09 - 03:52 pm Comment from: Jason

The article is updated. States that it is misinterpreted, $55 is the total bill now, not on top of as you stated.

Macdoc--

The iPod touch has Bluetooth already…it's kind of had it since the second gen came out. It's only been activated with 3.0, but the hardware's been there (for the purpose of Nike+).

Simpel question. I use at home and we use at the office Airport/Time Capusule, connected to dsl internet. Since I always have fast internet on my iPhone, I wonder the meaning of tethering.

Jun 19, 09 - 04:36 pm Comment from: Spark

@Johan Simons
Tethering is for using a laptop outside of wi-fi range using the cellular system for a modem. Obviously this increases the potential 3G network usage. While an iPhone is apt to use the 3G network in relatively short bursts of activity, a laptop user could keep a connection open for hours doing major cloud computing chores. In all honesty I think all of us that want to use 3G on our phones need to be concerned by oversaturation caused by laptop usage. I am okay with ATT charging more for this service to make sure heavy network users don't usurp the 3G network.

@jaundiced

An "unlimited" plan naturally leads to more usage of the resource as new functions become available. The iPhone is a game changer because of the unlimited data plan in combination with the superior iPhone software and applications that encourage people to explore new ways of integrating the device into their work and personal lives.

It stands to reason that the bandwidth impact of iPhone tethering on the AT&T wireless network could be significant if th service is relatively inexpensive in comparison to other options. So I don't think that it would necessarily be "obscene" to charge a reasonable fee for a tethering service. Businesses would likely save quite a bit of money relative to the current cost of separate EVDO cards. But I agree that a significant tethering fee would greatly discourage the non-business use of tethering.

Jun 19, 09 - 05:33 pm Comment from: KingMel

@Spark
You stated the potential impact of tethering very well. Rather than the shorter duration internet usage that appears to be typical for iPhones, laptop users might work for hours and transfer lots of large files. Tethering could add a lot of network traffic and cause problems for other users. AT&T will have to continue adding network capacity and, therefore, will attempt to extract as much revenue from tethering as possible to finance that effort (and generate a healthy profit).

Jun 19, 09 - 07:45 pm Comment from: alansky

I have no problem paying a reasonable extra monthly charge for tethering as long as there's a reasonable usage cap. No one wants to be on a meter while surfing the internet. No thanks!

Jun 20, 09 - 07:41 am Comment from: Wingsy

If it was $5 per month more I MIGHT be tempted to buy into it. I can probably count the number of times I wanted this over the past month on one hand. When I'm away with my laptop it seems I'm almost always within reach of some wi-fi.... that or I just use my iPhone. Don't understand why this feature seems to be in such demand.

@Wingsy

"If it was $5 per month more I MIGHT be tempted to buy into it."

Are you frigg'n stupid?

At $5 per month EVERYBODY with an iPhone would cancel their internet service at home.
